CHAINS OF FATE

After finding success together in their second trials, Coco and her friends return to the warmth of the atelier. Before long, they are approached by Tartah from Kalhn, and he needs their help setting up shop at the thrilling witches' festival, Silver Eve! But to design a contraption to sell there, the young students must consider the power of magic -- at once delightful, beneficial, and potentially harmful. As Coco makes preparations alongside Tartah, she's reunited with Custas, a boy who was saved by Coco once before, but is convinced that luck will never shine on him again...

“Magic and medicine come from the same place.”

A magic positivity series, and this particular volume especially highlights the role of magic in changing the world, using it for good, for healing. Coco and her friends are back at the atelier, visited by Tartah, who needs their help setting up shop at the witches’ festival, Silver Eve. Coco and Tartah meet Custas, who is physically disabled, and they devise spells to help accommodate his needs.

Olruggio devises a cool thing, a Phantasmal Fireball, but he and Qifrey agree magic isn’t just about inventing cool stuff, but about helping (and doing no harm, which this fireball could do in various ways). Magic as medicine. A great volume.

I like the magic system the author uses here, and this volume in particular got me thinking about some interesting possibilities. When trying to solve a particular problem, two apprentices find that there isn't a one size fits all solution. One spell fixes one scenario, while another fixes others, but the two are incompatible while functioning simultaneously. What they ultimately do is side-step the original problem entirely with a different kind of spell, but another branch they could've explored is the possibility of self-writing spells and conditional programming.

In this world, magic is produced by drawing circular seals with certain symbols arranged inside to produce different effects (imagine the transmutation circles in Fullmetal Alchemist, but they actually tell you what the squiggles mean so you can follow what the spell is doing), and a spell becomes functional once the outer ring of a seal is completed (ie, the circle is fully drawn, with no gaps). So, in a scenario where you need each of two different spells for different scenarios, you could have:

If x then complete the seal on the left
Or if y then break seal on the left and complete seal on the right.

etc etc.

Maybe there's some nuance I've missed that would prevent it, but it would be interesting to see fully automated spells and possibly even magical AI, as unlikely as that probably is.

This continues to be an ongoing fave manga series of mine. The artwork is superb and the storyline makes me believe in the wonder and beauty of magic <3

This volume pays homage to the positivity and blessings magic can bring as Coco and one of her friends from a previous volume (Tartah) requests her help in setting up his market stall at Silver Eve, the witches' festival.

We are also reunited with Custas, a travelling minstrel who was saved by Coco in an earlier volume after he fell in a river, and together, Coco and Tartah join forces to create a wingcloak to enable Custas (who is physically disabled) to fly and feel free from the sealchair where he spends his waking hours.

Honestly this volume was a pleasure to read and I felt my heart being lifted with it - I love the enthusiasm and happiness surrounding magic and creating spells in this series and cannot wait for the next installment. Long may it continue!

one of my most favorite volumes so far! i really love how this series highlights the importance of using magic for good and creating accessibility tools for those in need. volume 8 packs a lot of punch with its hopeful storyline regarding coustas and its subsequent shift to a darker part of the story at the last chapter. so stoked to read more.

At first this volume seems like a major digression as Coco and Tartah get involved with solving mobility issues for Custas, a traveling minstrel who was a minor character way back in volume 2. But little things have a way of snowballing, and it seems like there are some moments here that are pivotal ones for the larger story after all.

As always, this series is pleasing for its art and character moments.

review for volumes 5-8

the series just gets better. the art is as always incredible and the plot is shaping up to be the kind where i have started to question whether the things the antagonists want are actually terrible. i love the characters and the various themes that were discussed in here.

the world is magical, its so beautiful and whimsical and wondrous and i love how the mangaka includes mundane details and everyday things they do with their magic. *MILD spoilers*making the great hall underneath the sea then the girls making it rain there to pass their test fills me with so much such joy. *END of spoilers* we always forget about the tiny beautiful things while chasing greater achievements and the thought of all these children who live underwater, who have never seen the rainbow and bringing it to them is incredibly heartwarming.

ever since i started reading this manga i have been anticipating a cat drawn by the mangaka and boy did she deliver we got a crinkly long cat who looks like it could be a little evil, i love it! as always also adore the trivia at the end every volume. so far i have a list of all the things they can conjure magically that i am jealous of. i think it mostly because it feels so doable, the magic in this world doesn’t come out of nowhere its like chemistry and the possibilities of what these characters can do are endless. i keep thinking i could do it too if i tried lol.

the author finally revealed the name of the person that has been following coco and i was happy coustas was back in the story. words cant comprehend how psyched i am too read more about coustas especially with the way things ended with him. the conflicting emotions these little children have to go through grappling with the secret they must safeguard whilst trying to help their friend is something truly devastating. the moral dilemma coco and tartah were in and seeing coustas happy with the fate he was given truly broke my heart.

these past volumes introduced a ton of new characters and i have to say i love all the characters designs, they are all so beautifully drawn. i am excited to learn more about the knight moralis, they seemed to be an interesting bunch.

the next few chapters are going to be the “festival arc” except knowing the mangaka’s penchant for lore dumping the wondrous things that magic can make in this world i know we are just going to get so many different magical contraptions, trinkets and creatures. cannot wait. i love seeing this world unravel through coco’s eyes. i literally share her same sentiments whenever she sees something out of the ordinary.

and to end this. i have nothing to say about qifrey, at first i was giggling at the panels of olly( okay the girls and qifrey call him olly, adorable!) sleeping beside his bed while he recovered and then i got smacked in the face with chapter 40. i wanted to scream. i can feel the heartbreak coming from pluto, its not looking good for these two in the future.

For some reason these "there's going to be a fair!" type episodes always bore me.
Weren't the Bad Hats supposed to be an imminent threat that the adults were worrying about?

(Also, I think "we can't have magical non-burning fire for people to use because then kids might forget real fire is dangerous and touch it" is a ridiculous position vis a vis technology/magic.)

!!!!!! Gosh!!! I really love this volume. I love how it talks about disabilities and changing the world around to accommodate them. To look at things from another angle and from someone else's eyes in order to notice that the things you find easy are not easy for others. Specifically for a magic based world to talk about such important topics in a serious way.
BUT THAT END THAT END !!!!! I'm scared yall !!

I continue to enjoy this beautifully illustrated series, but at this point it has introduced so many characters I am starting to have trouble remembering them all. A character from a previous book showed back up, who I was supposed to have an emotional attachment too, but I had no memory of him... if I was reading them more closely back to back that would be less of a problem but at some point here I'm going to need a dramatis personae list.

The purpose of magic is to help those less fortunate.

Character focus is Tartah a non-witch.

4.5⭐️ started off slowly taking time with side characters, and rounding up for the reveal with Ininia at the end.

This volume focuses on medicine and magic, and the ethics of forbidden magic used to heal, or even bring someone back from the dead, perhaps?

5 ⭐️ once again, so adorable! i loved to see tartah and coco growing closer. all these characters are such kind souls. also i love to see the representation of disabilities in this series. tartah who is colourblind and custas who can’t use his legs. some quotes have such strong messages as well. i’m so excited for the next volume! i love this series so so much. there’s a thunderstorm going on as i’m writing this and this is the perfect weather to read such a cosy series!

I like the ideas of changing the status quo and progress, but I think this series might not be for me anymore. It's a bit too slow in some aspects, even with the introduction of a new character.

Something about this story is very eerie to me, was not expecting that from a series about a little girl becoming a witch through a magical apprenticeship, but I’m here for it.
