Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture

Ewangelia według św. Łukasza. Katolicki Komentarz do Pisma Świętego

Rate this book
Zainspirowany Święty Franciszek z Asyżu zapoczątkował tradycję stajenki bożonarodzeniowej, a niektóre z najwspanialszych dzieł Rembrandta i Caravaggia to sceny przedstawiające wydarzenia właśnie z tej Ewangelii.

I like the whole series but this entry is one of the more stiffly written ones. It is chock full of information but in such a way that I found it hard to follow sometimes, unlike most of the other volumes. Definitely worth reading as long as those qualities don't bother you.

Pablo T. Gadenz writes a superbly researched and fittingly orthodox commentary on Luke’s Gospel that may provide insights to the erudite or those who are much less so. How good and pleasant it is to find a gospel commentary that instructs the intellect, motivates the will, and encourages the heart while remaining true to the Church’s perennial teachings! I wholeheartedly recommend this commentary for Catholics and for all people of good will, who desire to understand more about the story of the savior as told from a great historian with access to the original sources and persons as well as Jesus’s own mother.

This commentary is comprehensive: it quotes each passage, or grouping of verses, and then discusses them. The discussion is wide-ranging and may describe how the passage fits the themes of Luke’s gospel, the historical setting, and customs of the day, and other parts of the Bible. The commentary is aimed at Roman Catholics and discusses how the passages relate to Catholic doctrine. It notes where they are included in the lectionary and how they relate to the catechism. That the New American Bible is used for the passage-by-passage scripture quotations means that Catholic readers will see the same words they hear in mass. This is also a weakness, in that that translation does not have the word-for-word literality than may prefer for serious study of the Bible. Nevertheless, this is the best commentary on Luke which I have seen. It would be useful for both Catholic and non-Catholic readers.

A straightforward and really useful walk through the beautiful gospel of Saint Luke. The author approaches each passage with a clear and brisk analysis. He supplements this with short digressions (“sidebars”) on themes as they arise. While he uses for his base text the unfamiliar NABRE, he frequently dips into the sure standard of the RSV. He does not shy from using the underlying Greek, but only where it is really useful, especially to illustrate parallels elsewhere in the NT or in the LXX. Likewise he dips occasionally into Patristic commentary, but only rarely and briefly.
The overall effect is a clear description of the meaning and value of Luke for the C21 church.

Great way to read the Gospel

This book breaks the Gospel of Mark into small chunks for easy reading and reflection. The commentary after the reading is very insightful and understandable. Highly recommend.

Gadenz provides an illuminating biblical commentary on the Gospel according to Luke. The format is easy to follow, and the call-outs every few pages help to break up what could be monotonous reading. Gadenz works to carefully commentary each section of this beautiful Gospel, providing incredible insight, excellent footnotes, and beautiful images to supplement the Scriptures that are quoted at the beginning of each section. I look forward to reading the entirety of the Gospel biblical commentary series by this publisher!

One of the few commentaries I go to regularly. The entire series is fantastic, and Gadenz's Luke is no exception. Particularly suited for the engaged lay Catholic, these books never disappoint. Occasional sidebars and illustrations only enhance the text. The only thing missing is discussion questions as these books are ideal for Bible study.
