I started climbing at 13, survived being lost in Snowdonia at 14, nearly drowned at 15, and then joined the Army at 16. Risk and adventure was built into my DNA and I feel very fortunate to have served the majority of my working career as an intelligence officer within Defence Intelligence, and as an explosive ordnance disposal officer and military surveyor within the Corps of Royal Engineers.

I was privileged to serve for twenty-eight years in the British Army as a soldier and officer, rising through the ranks to complete my service as a major. I served across the globe on numerous military operations as well as extensive travel and adventure on many major mountaineering and exploration expeditions that I led or was involved in.

I was awarded the Geographic Medal by the Royal Geographical Society for mountain exploration in 2003 and served on the screening committee of the Mount Everest Foundation charity for many years. It was humbling after so many years of service when I was awarded the MBE for services to counter-terrorism in 2007.

The Failsafe Query is my debut novel, with the second being The Kompromat Kill. My third is called The Moscow Whisper which will be published in the early summer of 2020.

I was fortunate enough to receive an early release copy of The Third Avenue.

I have read all of the Sean Richardson books, and I reckon this is the best one. I couldn't put it down. Great story, great action, great locations. Literally reading it when I should have been working. It's a real six out of five effort! The Chinese make a great antagonist, they are easy to believe as an enemy that will never forget the humiliation the west, and particularly Britain, gave them during the 19th century.

I have said before that I suspect that Michael has tapped the Foreign Secretary's phone with the scarily accurate plots that he creates, and I hope that all of this one is made up!

I find Sean a really likeable character, and there is humour and vulnerability there, and he suffers for his job. The character of Laura Creswell really gets to shine in this story as well, and I really enjoy it whenever she is taking a leading role.

This is just a great spy thriller that you will devour quickly.

This was a rollicking journey of spies and imminent warfare in current times. It sees information about aggression and misinformation on China's wish to dominate the South China Sea region being targeted at Britain and the USA. This engages the CIA and MI5 who collude to prevent a break away faction in China, The Red Spear, from advancing in leaps and bounds to gain territorial advantage of countries in the region.
A number of imminent scientists have been kidnapped to assist The Red Spear and it is up to a man on the ground, Sean Richardson to prevent the baddies from succeeding. He is assisted along the way by various operatives both from China and the USA.
I enjoyed up to the minute information being included in this book such as drones, advanced hacking, algorithms, and ammonium nitrate for explosions.
My favourite character was Sir Justin, a debonnaire and astute man aware of secret operatives keeping the world safe. He knows just what to say, to get the Powers That Be to buy in to the plans to prevent the next world war breaking out.

While Laura Cresswell(CIA) who has a vested personal interest in the mission, and her UK counterpart, Jack, are dealing with the interminable red tape of their respective countries, Sean and his small team are thrown into frightening situations reminiscent of James Bond. Fast paced!

Laura Creswell works at the US Embassy and is the most powerful woman in the CIA. She is Feisty, driven, smart and engaging she also runs a covert Special Activities Division (SAD). Laura and her British counterpart Jack H who works for M15 is the Director of G Branch and also commander of THE COURT he is a master of espionage. They are working together to divert the possibility, if their intelligence is correct, of World War Three.

Three eminent scientists have gone missing and Sean Richardson is tasked with finding out what happened to them. Working under the orders of Laura Creswell he flies to New Zealand with a new identity as a business man Stuart Cockburn to rendezvous with CIA agent Sue-Ellen Birch. She ostensibly is on a sabbatical but is actually a CIA Agent with an important female informant, whose code name is CYCLONE, embedded in the upper echelons of Chinese society.

Sean uncovers a covert secret society called Red Spear which is made up of ‘Chinese princelings’ the descendants of prominent and influential senior communist officials in the People's Republic of China and military men and women. The Red Spear is headed by General Bo Xin and the Red Spear Three their HQ is a Bunker in the Taklamakan Desert and their game plan is to take over the South China Seas.

What follows is a roller coaster of a ride set deep in the dangerous sociopolitical world of China and Sean and his fellow undercover agent Samantha must somehow stop the Red Spear from destroying world peace.

The Fourth book in the Sean Richardson series is filled with high octane drama, suspense and courageous determined individuals not least of which is our hero Sean.

Thank you Pigeonhole and to Michael Jenkins for reading along with us on this breathtaking ride. Five stars from me!

So at last the much anticipated Series two of The Failsafe Thrillers has arrived. The Third Avenue by Michael Jenkins is like going down an ice skeleton toboggan track at 80mph for the first time, and then doing it all over again. When reading this book, you need to set your watch to remind you to breathe as it’s a heart-thumping ride that never lets up.

An astonishing plot that is so current that you are certain the events actually happened. Reading The Third Avenue keeps you guessing from one second to the next, the plot and characters are so well-developed you feel you are watching a film play before you and that you are a drone hovering above all the action.

The CIAs London Chief of Station Laura, discovers intelligence which could start WW3 all from a keyboard in China. Her superiors in Langley didn’t take it seriously so she turns to her old flame ‘Jack’ Director of MI5s G Branch, but more importantly commander of MI5s most secret internal unit ‘The Court’ for help.

The principle character Sean is pulled back off recuperation from his last ordeal to lead a team of special operatives on a joint operation from both ‘The Court’ and the CIAs Special Activities Division onto what looks like a suicide mission. Time is running out for Sean and the team to uncover who is behind this recent threat and what is the truth linking the Chinese defector.

Readers are taken around the World with current geo-politics being threaded into the storyline with such ease that you feel you have just watch this on the news that week.

The series of Failsafe Thrillers will not disappoint and The Third Avenue is a must read if you enjoy Spy novels! You will NOT PUT it down until the end!!

That was an exciting read which has left me waiting impatiently for the 5th book in the series! Matching the geo-politics of our modern world, Michael wove again a spy thriller with a tense , fast-paced and credible plot. In this book, China represents a threat to the Western world. With ultra modern cyber technology and other devices , the reader is taken on a bumpy, explosive and exciting journey through three continents! The author himself served in the military as well as intelligence, and that makes the story even more credible (and frightening!). Great read!
Thank you, Michael for letting me read this book on Pigeonhole!

‘The Third Avenue’ by Michael Jenkins is yet another tremendous story. I have read the previous three books with Sean and his team. I read this on the Pigeonhole app with others readers and, the author Michael reading along with us and commenting.
It is extremely up to date geo-politically, great characters, great places to visit, well written, fast paced and fully charged throughout, beautifully descriptive, I loved the adrenaline fuelled read, where all the action feels real, in my opinion this is the best yet of the books he’s written, yet. The geo-political aspects of this story lend such a reality of events mostly out of one’s reach and knowledge. What I also enjoy about Michael’s books; is the time and he takes to extract images and places and transcribe such beauty of the landscape. An incredibly amazing read.

The latest book in the Failsafe series is a thrilling read, a geopolitical thriller set in China. Our favourite agent, Sean is off trying to infiltrate a top secret military installation in a desert, aided by Samantha. They also need to liberate Trinity, a possible spy.
A really fast-paced read, reminiscent of a James Bond Thriller. Very enjoyable.

I finally finished this book. I started it over a month ago with the Pigeonhole online book club but I got behind on my reading and this one was put aside. But I was determined to watch this book. And yes, I said watch. The storytelling is like watching a Bond film.

This is my first novel by Jenkins so I was unaware of his talent for making a spy story feel real.

A spy story is incomplete without kidnapping, murder and a conspiracy. The Third Avenue does not disappoint. In fact, it exceeded my expectations. Sean is commanded to meet with a spy in hiding to find out what they know. Unfortunately, the whistleblowing spy is murdered. Sean was unable to prevent it, but what he can do is solve the mystery, thwart the conspiracy and hopefully not die in the process.

This story was intriguing and I was engrossed in it while I was reading. Because I was behind while reading with The Pigeonhole, I was able to read the story at my own pace rather than one stave a day. For this type of book, I thought it was perfect. I devoured it in the time I had to read.

The Third Avenue is an exciting and realistic story. However, I am not an avid reader of spy thrillers so I may not be the best judge. The reason that I don’t read them is because they seem far fetched, outlandish. But I did not feel that with this saga. Jenkins adds just the right amount of real world news to leave you wondering, how accurate are these events? This is a bit worrying to me when I considered what was happening in this story. He can sure make it realistic!

Even though I do not normally read this genre, I will definitely make an exception for this author. I really enjoyed the writing and the intriguing story. And, I also want the backstory on Sean and Samantha. So I will add Jenkin’s previous books to my never ending tbr!

I highly recommend this book and I am grateful to the author for the eARC copy. I am happy to share how I felt about this book and suggest that you read it, especially if you enjoy a thriller with spies and guns and conspiracies.

In this "fantastic fourth" instalment of the Failsafe Thrillers series, China's elite are planning war by proxy with the West, and there is only one man who can stop them: our intrepid hero, Sean Richardson.

In his latest book, Michael Jenkins treats us to more of the usual high-stakes international skulduggery that he is famous for, and this time we get to see more of the impressive CIA Chief of Station, Laura Cresswell. For her, there is a very personal element to this latest threat, and we are kept guessing as to its implications right up until the final moments.

Sean Richardson's erstwhile love interest and colleague, Samantha Braund, also gets dragged deep into field service for the first time and becomes as exposed as Sean to the perils inherent with international espionage. Her steely character is vital to the success of the operation, and she has to draw on the mental reserves we suspected she possessed from our earlier encounters with her.

While Laura and her UK counterpart, Jack H, are dealing with the interminable machinations of Whitehall and the obfuscations of Laura's superiors Stateside, Sean and his small team are thrown into impossible situations with the slimmest chances of success they have had to deal with so far.

What makes this book so compelling - and the earlier titles in the series - is that you are never quite sure how much of the plot mirrors the political realities of the day. Michael clearly knows what he's writing about and only he knows what is fact and what is fiction ... and I sincerely hope there's more of the latter than the former.

However, as long as there is a real Sean Richardson out there putting his life on the line and defending our interests, we can perhaps sleep a little more soundly ... for now!

My thoughts about this brilliant follow up to the outstanding The Failsafe Query trilogy, fourth book in the series The Third Avenue,it totally blow me away, what a page turner. Former bomb disposal expert, turned author Michael Jenkins has done it again with its unique story and suspense that is breathtaking. The story of The Third Avenue begins when three eminent scientists are kidnapped by a shadowy global organisation, disgraced agent Sean Richardson is called in to conduct a simple mission – to track down and rescue a whistle-blower who holds the secrets to their startling conspiracy, while he's tracking down the whistle-blower he witnesses her assassination then Sean is propelled into a game of audacious espionage, determined to infiltrate a secret society and disrupt a plot that would lead to terrifying acts of war.As Sean investigates deeper, he uncovers a powerful cabal shrouded in absolute secrecy. Far from home and surrounded by the enemy,Far from home and surrounded by the enemy, only sabotage can stop the global carnage. But can Sean survive long enough to prevent new attacks on an unimaginable scale was fantastic. Talented Author Michael Jenkins's not only writes a powerful conspiracy spy thriller, which is mindblowing, it is well written fast paced thriller, that blows you away with its unique suspense, and how the story unfolds in the end it is remarkable. I would like to say thank you to Author Michael Jenkins, for kindly sending me a gifted E book copy for me to read and review this outstanding explosive thriller, that is one of the best thrillers this year and highly recommended.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥💥💥

I received an electronic advanced reader copy (ARC) of the The Third Avenue directly from the author Michael Jenkins; the review is 100% my honest opinion of the story as a beta reader.

I have read the previous three books in the series which first introduced me to the main characters in The Third Avenue. This is the best of the four books so far, The storyline is very contemporary and reflects the situation the world is in in 2021. What I enjoyed most was the book's pace. The plot moves at breakneck speed, helped by short chapters and plenty of location changes!

The main characters have good depth and have developed significantly through the series. It is very apparent that the author is very experienced within the shadowy world of counter espionage, something which is easy to validate when you look at his official bio.

In summary, if you enjoy this genre of book, I am confident that you will enjoy The Third Avenue immensely and perhaps be tempted to buy the three previous books in the series, although reading them is not essential to enjoying this one!

Literally unputdownable. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy directly from Michael Jenkins, and the opportunity to read with the Pigeonhole. Sorry, Pigeonhole, I couldn't wait, and finished the book without you! Like the previous Failsafe books starring Sean Richardson, this is topical, up-to-date and absolutely thrilling. This book features less of Jack (who is one of my favourite characters), and more of Laura Cresswell, as Sean works off the Americans' books rather than the Brits'. It's no problem, because I like Laura, and the action is the same as always: gripping and tense. Also present, to varying degrees, are most of the old gang, all of whom contribute to another wonderful story. Thanks to Michael (and the Pigeonhole).

A really enjoyable read. I liked the way the characters were written - particularly Sean, and that the women were strong and capable. What stood out for me were the descriptions of the various settings. I imagine many readers will plan future holidays based on this novel's locations. They really brought the book to life and were a boon in these times of limited travel opportunities! The fast-paced action and sense of jeopardy were thrilling. The plot encourages a lot of suspicion and springs some surprises. This story can be read as a stand alone, but I'm guessing that the references to characters' past adventures and relationships will inspire most readers to seek out the others in the series.

I haven’t read the previous three books in this series but it was not necessary in order to enjoy The Third Avenue and I may well have to read the previous books based on how good this one is.
This book is a real page turner full of action, intrigue and different locations around the world. Intricately plotted, seemingly throw away comments later prove to be pivotal to the plot. The author clearly knows the world of espionage and political intrigue.
If you like a fast paced contemporary spy thriller then this is the read for you.

The continuation of a series but can be read as a standalone.
Sean and his ‘team’ of operatives from all the major agencies, CIA, MI5, MI6 and more, are tasked with helping a rogue Chinese warlord’s wife to defect whilst also stopping him from taking over the world one country at a time.
Good descriptive fights and scenery, some of the technical and briefing passages are a bit long winded but overall a thriller to get your teeth into.

Another great rollercoaster of a read by Michael Jenkins featuring our friend Sean. This time we are right up to date with mentions of COVID and we are taken to places that I was visiting just months before Sean so I could really visualise the action. This really is edge of your seat reading which leaves you breathless. This is the fourth in the series and I really hope there will be more.
Thank you once again Pigeonhole and Michael for another great read.

The start of the book seemed to get a bit bogged down in technicalities, but, boy, once it got going, it was a veritable rollercoaster! It's my first Michael Jenkins book, but likely not my last. Although it can be read as a standalone, I wish that I had read the previous books first.

Many thanks to Pigeonhole and Michael Jenkins for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Third Avenue takes us on another breakneck-speed adventure with spy, Sean Richardson. This time however, the danger comes from China - or rather a breakaway faction called Red Spear. Sean’s job is to infiltrate the organisation, find out what they want to achieve and how, and destroy them. Of course, not everything goes to plan. But there’s no need to worry, because Sean and his team have everything under control!

I love these books. Sean Richardson is reminiscent of James Bond, and always seems to be getting himself out of serious trouble - that’s after he’s got himself into it in the first place!
I hope there’s more to come from Sean Richardson, because I’ll be reading the books!
Many thanks to The Pigeonhole and Michael Jenkins for joining in the conversation.

Very tense but enjoyable read. It's always great to meet up with previous characters and delve into more information from their past, although it can be read as a stand alone novel. I also liked the fact that it's up to date with events in the world. You are in for a bumpy ride with this one, so hold on to your seats and enjoy.

Fast-paced, action-packed story about international espionage, covert operatives and deniable assets.
A joint task force between MI5 and CIA tried to prevent a subterfuge-plot by a rogue militarised Chinese faction from World Domination.
It is rather uncanny how timely the book is in discussing the plight of Uighurs muslims.
What is going on in Xinjiang is a very topical discussion right now in world politics.

Another Sean Richardson adventure. This is the fourth in the series and the second of Michael's books I have read. This was another action packed adventure, this time based within the Chinese sphere. It was about a secret organisation within China known as "Red Spear" that hoped to overthrow the government in Beijing and replace with their own fanatical regime whilst simultaneously starting world war three. Sean and the team lead a plot to prevent this.
This is espionage at it's best and Michael appears to be a master at writing them.
Read and enjoyed on the Pigeonhole.
