Che The Eleven (e qualsiasi altra sua incarnazione, The Eight compresa) sia uno dei villain che preferisco di casa Big Finish non è una sorpresa.
Un box set a lui dedicato e con il sesto Dottore di Colin Baker a fargli da contraltare merita 5 stelle anche solo per il pensiero.
Mark Bonnar riprende il ruolo del Time Lord psicopatico e conduce un gioco perverso nel tentativo di diventare signore assoluto di un pianeta dove tutti gli abitanti hanno due menti, separate e distinte.
Affiancato dalla moglie Miskavel (interpretata da Lucy Gaskell, moglie di Bonnar nella vita reale), the Eleven ha deciso di rendere il pianeta il suo paradiso.

Una volta arrivato a Molaruss, pianeta abitato da esseri dalla mente doppia, The Eleven sfrutta gli studi di uno scienziato locale per liberarsi di alcune sue incarnazioni e iniziare una scalata al potere.

Ovviamente, per rendere tutto più divertente, servono ospiti speciali che possano fare da testimoni.al suo trionfo.
I tre episodi sono un trionfo per The Eleven e Mark Bonnar è spettacolare nel rendere le varie incarnazioni e a differenziarle.
L'interazione tra i protagonisti è ottima, considerando anche le varie parentele, e Colin Baker riesce a tenere bene il ritmo dei colleghi più giovani.
Ci sono vari riferimenti alle precedenti avventure di The Eleven, ancora nel futuro per il Dottore, e qualche dettaglio in più sul passato delle prime incarnazioni di The Eleven.
Come sempre c'è un discreto gioco temporale tra le varie vicende raccontate, ma è sempre abbastanza facile seguire la storia.

Il Dottore e Constance possono fermarlo o rimarranno intrappolati nella sua ragnatela?
La gente di Molaruss ha due menti - letteralmente! Un mondo di menti doppie all'interno di corpi singoli offre un'opportunità unica per l'Undici e la sua nuova moglie, l'aliena mutante Miskavel. Nel frattempo, il Dottore e Constance trovano un TARDIS abbandonato, ma staranno forse incappando in una trappola?

Prima che si scontrasse con l'Ottavo Dottore in Doom Coalition e prima ancora che venisse catturato dal Settimo, l'Undici si era ritrovato faccia a faccia con il Sesto e la sua compagna, Mrs. Constance Clarke, su un pianeta dove ogni persona ha due menti ben distinte.
Il Dottore e Constance trovano il TARDIS dell'Undici abbandonato nel Vortice, e ne seguono le tracce fino a Molaruss, dove trovano la sua neo moglie, Miskavel, sola e disperata. Nel tentativo di capire cosa sia successo all'Undici, devono prima scoprire cosa stavano cercando di ottenere in un laboratorio per il trattamento delle personalità multiple...
Il primo episodio di questa trilogia fa un ottimo lavoro nell'introdurre l'Undici anche nel caso non lo si conoscesse, senza tuttavia appesantire la trama con troppe spiegazioni in caso contrario. La sua pazzia è davvero terrificante in questo episodio, che vede le sue personalità ancora più irrefrenabili del solito.
L'idea brillante è stata quella di porlo in un mondo in cui tutta la popolazione ha qualcosa in comune con lui, ovvero ospitare più di una sola personalità nello stesso corpo.
Ancora più azzeccato è stato affiancarlo ad una compagna, interpretata dalla vera moglie di Mark Bonnar, Lucy Gaskell: Miska fa davvero un bel paio con l'Undici, e come lui prospera nel caos e nella distruzione.
Ogni audio che sento del Sesto Dottore mi fa apprezzare questa incarnazione sempre di più, e trovo che Constance con la sua posatezza sia una companion ideale per lui.
In ogni caso, tutto il cast fa un lavoro talmente eccelso che non vale neanche la pena specificarlo.
Anche se alcune scene finali diventano un po' caotiche da seguire, questo è davvero un ottimo inizio per il boxset, che con il suo dinamismo dimostra tutto il potenziale dell'Undici nel creare storie uniche e intriganti.
Ma le avventure dell'Undici e Miska su Molaruss sono appena iniziate...

In questa storia né il Dottore né Constance compaiono affatto, lasciando all'Undici e sua moglie il ruolo da protagonisti.
Si tratta di un giallo molto particolare perché, anche se non ci sono dubbi su chi sia il colpevole, dobbiamo capire quale delle personalità dell'Undici ha compiuto il delitto.
La storia è raccontata in una serie di scene a due voci, molto semplice rispetto all'intricatezza del primo episodio e con un approccio decisamente più incentrato sui personaggi. In particolare per la maggior parte del tempo abbiamo un dialogo diretto tra l'Undici e Oliver Akkron, le loro voci messe in primo piano grazie a un ristrettissimo uso di effetti sonori e musicali.
I temi trattati vanno ad assumere un aspetto politico e coadiuvano l'approfondimento di Molaruss e dei suoi abitanti, aggiungendo elementi che vanno a legare assieme le tre storie. In alcuni punti, abbiamo addirittura alcuni sprazzi del passato dell'Undici.
In un setting per la maggior parte del tempo tranquillo e pacato, Mark Bonnar ha modo di interpretare un ruolo molto più contenuto rispetto al solito, e la sua voce profonda assume quasi un tono ipnotico.
Ma nonostante la semplicità dell'esecuzione non mancano i colpi di scena finali, e le macchinazioni di Miskavel, il cui coinvolgimento diventerà esplicito soltanto alla fine, ancora una volta si rivelano essere all'altezza di quelle del marito.
È una storia molto diversa dal solito, e funziona bene come ponte tra gli altri due, molto più carichi di azione.

Ma l'Undici ha un piano per elevare il suo popolo ad un nuovo livello di coscienza. E non può resistere ad invitare il Dottore e Constance ad assistere al suo trionfo finale...

Nell'ultimo capitolo della trilogia, il Dottore e Constance ritornano su Molaruss, trovandolo profondamente diverso. Da diversi anni ormai, l'Undici governa il pianeta in perfetta armonia con tutte le sue personalità, e la popolazione lo adora. Ma il Dottore sa che il suo nemico con cambia così facilmente, e si chiede dove sta la fregatura.
È una novità sia per noi sia per il Dottore vedere l'Undici così equilibrato, nella prima metà dell'episodio, e per un attimo sembra quasi di poterlo vedere davvero come un buon governante, ma la sua vera natura torna presto a galla e il suo senso di insoddisfazione lo porta a voler creare un mondo a sua immagine e somiglianza.
Il Dottore, prima scettico, poi cautamente ottimista, finisce per vedere i suoi sospetti riconfermati, e nel suo confronto con l'Undici esterna tutta la sua dirittura morale, mostrandosi nel contempo estremamente empatico nei confronti degli innocenti.
Constance ha un ruolo molto più importante in questo audio, fornendo una grande prova di recitazione per Miranda Raison, che ha la possibilità di mostrare lati nascosti e repressi della sua personalità.
Per Miska abbiamo invece un percorso di redenzione, apparendo molto cambiata e arrivando ad essere la vittima degli abusi del marito. Un po' mi dispiace non aver visto di più del suo lato psicotico, dato che i primi due episodi avevano fatto in gran lavoro nel renderla pericolosa e imprevedibile quanto l'Undici, ma è comunque un interessante sviluppo per il suo personaggio, e mi chiedo se la rivedremo di nuovo in futuro.
L'episodio “eleva” la posta in gioco rispetto alle prime due storie, esprimendo con pochi tocchi il senso di una catastrofe globale. Vengono tirate le somme e chiuso l'arco narrativo di questo boxset, che ha visto lo sviluppo di un worldbuilding molto originale. È senza ombra di dubbio un ascolto dovuto a tutti i fan dell'Undici, ma anche un buon punto di partenza se non lo si conoscesse, e come sempre mi auguro che lo rivedremo presto in futuro (magari anche in altre incarnazioni).

Finally got around to listening to this (and also felt in a mood where I thought I would appreciate it and not be overly critical).
This was good.
It was by no means perfect, and there are certainly a few better Sixie stories out there (and also a couple of better Eleven stories).
But this was one of the best BF releases I had been listening to in a while.
The writing felt fresh and original and they really tried to breathe some fresh air into the character of the Eleven.
It plays wonderfully to his strengths.
The performances were top notch and pretty stunning, with the actors able to flex their muscles with all the different voices and characters.
It certainly is one of the best performances by Mark Bonnar as the Eleven yet!
But I also enjoyed Constance and of course Colin Baker. Colin Baker does bring his usual energy to this, but he does sound a bit older than usual. But of course I know he is not getting younger and I am glad he still is able to do these audio plays and still is able to bring so much energy and enthusiasm to it. So I am not complaining, far from it!
So yes, this is a very good and enjoyable release.
Not only for Sixie (and Eleven) fans.

This three-episode story features the Sixth Doctor going up against the title character, a renegade Time Lord original to the audios. I know that I just criticised 4th Doctor story The God of Phantoms for feeling too long when it's only marginally longer than this, but here, the fact that the story is broken up into three means that it just doesn't feel the same, especially as the middle episode has a different style to the other two. Nonetheless, it does fit together as a single story, rather than three isolated ones.
All For One - This episode introduces us to a planet where the inhabitants all have a split personality, being able to switch between their two selves at will. Inevitably, they regard anyone who cannot do this as, in effect, disabled and there is some low-level discrimination against such people. That gets directed at Constance and a guest character, but the main focus is on The Eleven, taking advantage of some of the local medical technology to do something it wasn't intended for. Although much of it is a runaround with the main characters being hounded by The Eleven, it does have the advantage of making use of the exact nature of his insanity rather than just have him being nuts. And, while it would work well enough as a standalone, it's a good intro to what follows.
The Murder of Oliver Akkron - The second story is the most unconventional for Doctor Who and serves solely as a bridge between the other two, such that it wouldn't work at all in isolation. It consists almost entirely of a conversation between a sane-seeming Eleven and its titular character, whose identity and importance are slowly fleshed out as the story progresses. This, obviously, is the sort of thing that audio is well suited to, although the fact that it consists almost entirely of two people sitting down and having a polite dinner conversation is far from what one would expect. On its own, this would be dreary, but it fleshes out the world in which it is set and does employ some clever misdirection as well as providing what will prove key backstory for the third episode. An oddity, perhaps, but it fits where it is.
Elevation - We're back on more familiar ground in the final instalment as the Sixth Doctor returns to see the fallout of the previous episode and The Eleven coming up with an even more audacious scheme. It takes a while before that becomes apparent but when it does, as in the first episode, it ties in directly with the nature of his affliction. It manages to explore a little of what it would be like to be him, and gives Miranda Raison (as Constance) some entertaining opportunities to ham it up. It's bonkers and grandiose but very fitting for the character and once again showing Mark Bonnar's strengths as an actor. (If there's a weakness with the character concept, though, it's that eleven is too many - this far in and I've still not got a real feel for Two, Four, Five, or Seven and, while I'm sure they're all in this, I couldn't tell you which ones they are. But heck, that still leaves seven of them...)

An interesting premise that goes on way too long.
The setting is a bit intriguing -- a world where everyone is given a split personality through some kind of mind technology. Drop The Eleven into this -- a Time Lord with multiple personalities -- and you've got a good set-up. Practically speaking, multiple characters with multiple personalities -- and then add in multiple clones -- and trying to sort it all out makes for kind of a mess. And that's just Part 1.
Part 2 calms things down a bit, a sort of murder-mystery -- but it's written by Nigel Fairs, who rarely delivers a straightforward narrative. I had to listen to the behind the scenes portion at the end to understand exactly what was happening, because it really isn't made clear. And then, you're dealing with multiple personalities and clones again, and . . . well no.
Part 3 could have stood on its own as a story, and the first two parts jettisoned. In fact, I do wonder if this wasn't originally one of the two-hour episodes that was padded out.
Final points:
1) The Eleven is being overused.
2) Colin Baker apparently had dentures or dental work before recording this, leaving his voice work a bit . . . rough. I hope he gets it worked out for future episodes.
3) Miranda Raison really gets a chance to shine in the final episode.

The Eleven has certainly been one of the most successful creations from Big Finish, helped of course by the spectacular performances from Mark Bonnar.
To me this boxset is clearly a test run to see if The Eleven having his own boxsets would be successful or not. Eventhough this is a 6th Doctor Adventure, The Eleven is the main character of the story (hence the title), and The Doctor doesn't even appear in Episode 2 at all.
Brilliant performances all around by everyone in the cast, supported by strong stories. One can only hope that we keep seeing The Eleven appear in the future.

finally got round to listening this!
i really enjoyed it. constance is really growing on me as a companion. and of course colin baker is a star.
the second story had no tardis team. i was expecting them, but no! thought this was very interesting. and it bridged into the next story really nicely. it felt like a podcast almost as it was just two people chatting.
such a good box-set. the eleven is a great character. mark bonnar is a treat. i hope we see more of him…

An interesting new foe (eta: new to me, I haven't gotten to the 8th Doctor's Doom Coalition) with some potential, though when I get a set of Doctor Who audio stories I expect him to actually be in them all (he's not in the 2nd). The first one was a good introduction, but the second and third should have been condensed into one or expanded into its own set.

Marketed as a Sixth Doctor boxset, this is really an Eleven story featuring the Sixth Doctor. It's a bit complicated and I've heard better Eleven stories. Still, it wasn't terrible, and the third episode was rather good. Colin Baker does a good job as the Doctor (but then, has he ever given a bad performance for Big Finish?) and while Miranda Raison does fine as the Doctor's companion Constance Clarke. Mark Bonnar does quite well as the Eleven and his wife (both narratively and in real life) Lucy Gaskell does okay as Miskavel. The Eleven, so called because all his regenerations are still actively stuck in his mind, is an enjoyable character, usually. The arguments between incarnations (all played by Bonnar) are often enjoyable. While not outstanding, this was still a decent audio and if you enjoy the Eleven, it's worth a listen.

When this set was announced I was a little apprehensive because whilst I love The Eleven as a character and find him fascinating I do feel like in Ravenous he didn't really contribute overall to the series despite it being a fairly solid storyline overall. So fingers crossed Mark Bonnar gets what he deserves with this release!
One For All:
The Doctor and Constance find a ship in the vortex that belongs to The Eleven and it seems he's dead but the most shocking reveal of them all is that he's married. They go to his recent destination to find out what's happened and find themselves in a mess designed by The Eleven himself for death doesn't mean he hasn't set up one last trap for The Doctor.
This was a really great way of starting this set and was actually really interesting with how it dealt with the idea of duo minds and mind surgery which was a neat concept that really fits with a character like The Eleven perfectly and it's used to its full effect. Having The Sixth Doctor and The Eleven together is a treat but also doing new stuff with The Eleven such as the idea of him having a wife.
Overall this was a really great way of opening the set and has me absolutely ecstatic to see how it may continue! 8.5/10
The Murder of Oliver Akkron:
About to be executed for the murder of The President. The Eleven remembers back to when he killed him and the events that ensued before his death.
This was a fantastic story that was quite experimental in nature considering for the majority of it was just The Eleven and Oliver Akkron having a conversation based upon The Eleven's memory whilst his wife is undercover trying to help him the best she can on the outside. It was surprisingly quite haunting in places with quite a grim and gruesome scene towards the end.
It was interesting to see a different side to The Eleven as well, if you've listened to it you'll know what I mean because I found myself agreeing with his motive but not necessarily the means.
Overall I'm not entirely sure how the set will top this one because this was a really fantastic story that highlights just how good The Eleven can be when you have something worth telling with his character! 10/10
Elevation:
The Eleven has finally achieved exactly what he wants from the Molaruss Empire and things are going well that is until he invites The Doctor and Constance back because Eleven has a devastating plan of epic proportions.
This was a really good way of closing off the set and wrapping everything up in a satisfying way whilst showing more to the characters we've been following throughout this set at the same time and not only that but the stakes are very high in this last installment!
Overall Not my favorite of the set but still an absolute cracker and I can't see how it could have closed off any better! 8/10
