Another action packed book by S.K. Gregory. Having already been introduced to demons in the first book, Daemon Madness was easy to get into and Mackenzie lived up to my expectations as a truly kick-ass female lead. I also love Taryn and I liked that we got his perspective in this book, I think it added another dimension to the story which made it more interesting. Also, I'm intrigued by Micah and the type of demon he is - I definitely want to know more on that front!

This book ties up all the loose ends left at the end of the first book, Daemon Persuasion, and the ending, I hope, implies there might be a third book...? And talking about the end... I loved/hated it. Seriously, I want to know what's going to happen between Taryn and Mackenzie! Being a die hard romantic, I enjoyed the fact that there was always a hint of chemistry between the two characters, though so far it hasn't really gone anywhere, and I look forward to reading about them in the next book, if there is indeed going to be another instalment.

This was the 1st time ever that I’ve read the 2nd book in a series without reading the 1st one, not recommended. Yet, Daemon Madness was able to fill in enough of the details from the first adventure while progressing through the story that I still ended up enjoying the journey. And I feel like, even though I now know how it turns out, I want to go back and read book 1. It sounds like some crazy bananas went down.

So, my review is based entirely on this one book out of context rather than the series.

Daemon Madness is an enjoyable story-connector

What I mean by story-connector is that it feels like the build up to book 3. There are some interesting twists and turns in this book though.

The story flexes between demon hunting and possessions, to being hunted by demons, to dangerous situations brought on by drug dealers and shady humans. Which makes for a very engaging read.

Hello Angel:

As I was reading this I felt like I’d slipped into the world of Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) mixed with Supernatural. Both of which I love, for the record. There were demons, hellhounds, and critters I’ve never hear of before scuttling around a world where magic darkened the deepest shadows.

Reading this book felt a bit like watching a tv show in how the pacing played out. The story would jump to a new time or place and pop right along, sometimes even playfully bouncing past a dramatic moment and then back again.

The style took a little while to get used to, but it really kept things moving. Although I do wish some of the more dramatic moments were given a little more room to breathe before continuing on to the next scene.

The Characters

The main reason I want to go back to book 1 is because of these characters. Taryn, demon on the run/friend, and Mackenzie both have very interesting personalities and histories that get explored during this story.

The past seems to be the driving motivation of this story (Even though there are big scary things in the present happening as well.) But the main development comes from Taryn and Mackenzie confronting the deepest darkest moments of their past.

It is in these moments of weakness, doubt and pain that the characters really shine though. You get to see what they have overcome and how their humanity fights with the darkness within them.

Also, I love the awkward romance between these two. They’re so darn cute and don’t even know it.

It is a fun, fast paced read, with some interesting characters that fans of Joss Whedon and Supernatural will really enjoy.

***** WHEN DEMONS BEHAVE LIKE THE MAFIA

We’ve all seen Mafia shows/movies where members of the younger generation are dragged kicking and screaming into the family’s business, only to develop into their clan’s most powerful envoys. But what if it’s a family laden with demons? What if those children are privy to a different set of lessons? Instead of machine guns, Italian “neckties,” and the art of threatening politicians, these children are taught all about teleporting, ancient curses and cures, mind control, and body transformations?

Opening with an extremely powerful, atmospheric scene in the woods, we are introduced to Mackenzie––half demon, half human––along with her ‘tutor,’ Taryn, of the same ilk. Just as in the ‘racially pure’ Nazi Germany, these two are considered misfits yet they continue on, as Taryn continues to teach her how to use her powers and in the process, gets more involved than he would like.

To me, Mackenzie’s relationship with Taryn was wonderful. Her tough, smart aleck approach to his sometimes overbearing, albeit protective, manner, was particularly appealing. Besides being touching, I thought it was a great foil for the highly visual and action-packed chaos constantly surrounding them. HIGHLY recommended!

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review
Mackenzie escaped her mothers hometown and is trying to get on with things. It doesn't help that Taryn is still in her life. When he starts acting oddly, she worries that he will turn on her, but he is keeping a secret from her.
This was an excellent sequel. It picks up a few weeks after the first book. Mackenzie is still learning about being a half demon and Taryn is teaching her how to fight. A familiar face returns to haunt them (I won't say who). Action packed with some great dialogue, I really loved this book. Can't wait for the next one.
