The Secret Coin

Rate this book
Save the fae. Do the impossible. And don’t freak out in the city.

With all odds stacked against her, Jessica Northwood only has one choice. To protect the Gateway, she has to protect herself. And it comes with a terrible cost.

Now that Leandras the fae can fulfill his end of their agreement, what he tells Jessica about the Gateway and the world on the other side only causes more problems. She has to protect this portal dark magicals would kill to get their hands on—and have tried—but trusting Leandras is easier said than done. Especially when the fae leads her down dark alleys and into secret meetings and won’t explain a thing.

When the rest of her wiped memories come crashing back to her, everything changes. Because now Jessica knows exactly who’s coming after her, and it has nothing to do with the bank. Only unlikely alliances and deadly promises can help her now—hopefully not as deadly as the powerful forces chasing her down on both sides of the Gateway.

Jess is on to her next adventure. I really enjoyed the variety of characters in this story. I felt intrigued by the bank and all the Jess goes through. I can’t go into more details with out a spoiler so I’m just going to say hurry up Ms. Hutson and get the next one out. Super star read!!

This is book three of the Accessory to Magic series and the main character Jessica Northwood has only been in her new job for a month or so, but it has changed her life completely! She has a dying fae, Leandras, in her bank and she has to do something extremely dangerous to save his life, after doing a binding with him, under which he has promised to tell her everything she needs to know about the Gateway she is meant to protect inside the bank. She doesn’t have her full magical power as a vestrohim unless she undoes the Shattering she placed on herself years ago, to lock away the darkness and bad memories that haunted her. Now she will need to break the spell which comes with a high price, if she is to save the world from what is on the other side of the Gateway. She has been faced with a large number of dark magicals who want their hands on what is beyond the Gateway and the gold coin that Leandras withdrew from his box within the bank’s vault all that time ago. He set off the Reckoning and now the second stage must be done if this world and others are to survive what is on the other side of the locked door.

Many have come to attack her in the bank and try to take her place as the Guardian, as she finds out is her role, but she has managed to survive all the attacks, with the help of Leandras on this last one! But she still isn’t too sure she can fully trust him, as fae are very tricky with any agreements they come up with or seem to agree with. Doing what she has to trying to save the fae, leaves her on death’s door until the strange lizard in the bank does something weird, which also brings back memories she shouldn’t be able to remember at all! Leandras finally shares with her much of what happened on the other world and what danger will be coming to her world, unless they take control and do something about it, as agreed from their binding. He says they need certain items to do the powerful spell required and he ends up whisking her about down dark alleys and secret magical meeting places, but doesn’t tell her why. Never mind his method of teleporting them everywhere with his fae magic which her stomach doesn’t like one bit!

Her memories bring back the awareness of a deadly foe who had chased her since her childhood and the being on the other side of the Gateway is gaining power and set this creature back on her path, no matter how much she has been trying to hide from it. Whatever choices she makes, they could end in her death and pretty soon at that. She has dangers facing her from both sides of the Gateway and must trust Leandras and his group of allies, to perform the second stage of the spell and stop the Gateway from opening, but that isn’t all she must do. To be able to take in all the magic the spell will need channelled, first she must face off against Mickey, her former boss and tormentor, who pushed her under the bus and left her to be caught for one of his crime jobs and gang she was part of. The bank regained some memories when she did and has figured out how she can pass on the price of her spell to regain her magic, but first she will need the target to come to her and the two incidents to succeed, one straight after the other. Lots of others are involved in helping Leandras, but many more want to stop them, at any cost necessary. First rights to get through the Gateway have been offered and it is up to Jessica to decide who will or won’t get that chance. Shame she doesn’t quite know the trickery behind the actions she is being forced towards. It looks like there are some more adventures for Jessica and the fae to go on and I can’t wait to see what happens between them. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

*** NO SPOILERS ***

I'll preface this review with a disclaimer, which affected my review. I thought it was a good read. I didn't follow my own advice about not starting a series from anywhere other than Book One. There are some series where characters may show up in later books but the plot line and details in each book are standalone. This book is part of the other type where each book is connected to all that came before it. So although this was a good, interesting, and occasionally confusing (my bad for not starting with Book One) read there were numerous spots where it seemed that things that previously occurred and were referred to were missing for me.

For those already wiser and having started with Book One, or not taking the above advice and starting with Book Three, you are in for a really good read.

Like another reviewer stated, it's difficult to do the review with no spoilers.
But there are some details I can provide just the same. There are several unique characters from before with all of their blessings and faults. There is one of the most unique characters I've come across - a snarky, sentient bank building. There is at least one character who you can't decide what side they are really on, and what they may not be telling the others. Add in some capable opposition, a few threads of the plot and the different characters and stir well. Get a good cup of coffee, a comfy chair and dig in for the latest part of this adventure. Not a book that kept me up all night to finish in one sitting, but more than interesting enough to get it read quickly.

I recommend it and like some other series, I'm going back to Book One for the backstories and background I've missed.

*** NO SPOILERS ***.

This third book in this series was utterly fantastic - the best so far! It was so much more thrilling, yet still had that same sense of humour and snark that the previous two books had. Lots of questions were answered in this one that I had left over from the last book - we got to know more about Jessica's history and what she had done to her own magic, yet there's still other questions to be answered now.

The thing behind the Gateway was revealed and that somewhat answered why all the other magical beings want her to open it. But there's still lots more to find out about this Gateway and this being too!

In this one, Leandras and Jessica have to work together a lot more and I feel like there may something brewing between them, but she doesn't fully trust him, even though she is told she should by someone from her past. I'm not sure I fully trust him yet either as he is never quite completely honest or straight up about things. I do think their relationship will continue to develop, but in which direction, I'm not so sure.

I love the way Jessica dealt with the people from her past, both friends and not friends and it was great seeing how her old gang worked jobs together. I am hoping they will all get the opportunity to do something like that again. The way they all knew how each other worked and their separate roles all came together created the perfect team! And now Jessica is back in full form, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with!

The ending was a slight cliffhanger, with a huge decision being placed on Jessica - I can't wait to see what her decision will be now though! Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book through BookSprout but this review is all my own!

☄️☄️ONE TUMULTUOUS ADVENTURE☄️☄️
Jumping jellybeans jill! Kathrin dropped the bomb and lowered the boom, unleashing one incredibly tumultuous, sinfully kickass rock-my-world tsunami with this tumultuous delight, laying out one action packed, heart pounding, pulse racing, adrenaline pumping, block busting dynamo, raising the stakes and keeping it real, skyrocketing this bad boy to staggering heights. Observing the dangerous struggles and formidable triumphs while attentive to the perilous twists and wicked turns unfolding, broken barriers and sketchy lines solidify as limitations are pushed and tested, reaching deep for every ounce of strength in a fierce surge of determination, launching forward with such intensity and vigor, bursting this baby to life sensationally. Doubt and mistrust run rampant brimming with riveting drama, gripping intrigue, underlying currents, brutal tactics, spiraling danger, electrifying suspense and intense situations ensue, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never imagined, melding this bad boy together flawlessly. The characters interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits add depth and diversity, transforming into amazing personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Fantastic job Kathrin, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.

“The Secret Coin” by Kathrin Hutson is the third volume on her Urban Fantasy series “Accessory to Magic”, which captivates with a wonderful brand-new verse, a no-nonsense heroine, a sentient bank (yeap!) and a very well-constructed story-arc. Only this time the bank is almost innocuous, who will have guessed that 😊

Jessica Northwood (FMC) thought her biggest problems was to hold Leandras to his word, it turns out the bigger problems is that he does and now Jessica learns about the real nature of the Gateway, the world beyond it and the utterly need to protect it at all cost from falling into the wrong hands. Trusting Leandras comes at its all cost, the fae is as conniving and secretive as always, and Jessica finds herself part of covert meetings held in secluded back alleys without any real safety for her well-being. Until her memories came back to the surface and she realizes that the Gateway is only as safe as she herself can be. Now that Jessica knows her enemy there will be some very dangerous alliances at play.

This is fast-paced, extraordinary original story, set in a very well-crafted fantasy world, full of twists and very unexpected turns, with a very healthy dose of humor, and a wonderful snarky and independent heroine, credible and instantly relatable. The story is so much fun, keeping the reader avidly jumping from chaos to chaos until the almost! fully satisfactory end… and I say ‘almost’ because it is impossible to get enough of this 😉

Complex and thrilling journey around fantastic plot twists and personal demons!

I love this book! The layers upon layers of cool worldbuilding with the various witches, warlocks, creatures, and fae are awesome. The world is as straightforward as so many non-human players can allow, but that does not mean the plot is predictable or boring! I couldn't put this down and I'm going to read the whole series more than once, I can tell already. The lore of the fae that's traditional built upon the author's additions and creations, so it felt like an extension of traditional myths and a deeper world than I think would've been possible without using the fae lore as a starting point. I didn't have trouble getting into it at all, and the plot picks up with a great scene that sets the tone for the entire book.

Leandras was a great foil for Jessica's struggle with her own morality and the necessities of her new role. It's hard to tell whether the fae can be trusted right up to the very end. She wants to believe him, she doesn't, but she stays strong and holds her own against a guy with a lot of power. I liked the interplay between Jess and the bank, it made for a lot of laughs and provided some good comedy relief in tense moments. I loved that the author even used the usual conversations' absence to develop their bond.

Tense, excitement, of course bad guys and good ones, not to mention all those unknowns popping up. Jessica is back in action trying to figure out what to do about the portal door, second n third guessing her helping Leandras out, and still trying to figure out how to fix herself and yes the bank is still talking in her head. She's got a huge job to do to help Leandras and after that life changing job that will help her heal and protect the bank, hopefully. Still got the bad guys trying to get to her and people trying to get dibs on the door whenever she decides to open it. A few hellacious fights, Jessica is one bad ass chica! It seems the slow burn between her and Leandras is still going but so far it's not going anywhere. The lizard (iguana) heals Jessica and surprises the heck out of everyone and hey who knew the Fae are scared of the darn thing! The guardian (Jessica) and the Laenmur get together to perform the ritual for the 2nd phase of opening the doorway.... tons of surprises in this story and makes you drool for the next installment!!! Love it can't wait for the next book!!

Ok so this is a REALLY hard one to review without spoilers, but I’ll try. READ THIS FREAKING BOOK. Of course if you’re like me after the ending of book 2 you won’t need me to tell you what to do, you’ll dive in headfirst and let the family know it is takeout for dinner tonight. I never thought it would be possible for an author to make me love a building, but there you go Kathrin Hutson, I love this bank. The snark, the caring advice and concern, kind of like an irritating older sibling you know is only looking out for you. Other authors have made me wary so I have to say that my verdict on Leandras is still out, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, I’ll let myself hope that he does not screw Jess over in the end. Confucius got way more interesting there too with his (?) magical abilities, I did not see that one coming. Also Mel, there in the end and Cedric? Well done Ms. Hutson well done. I’ve been done for about ten minutes and I’m hoping book 4 is in the near future because this world is absolutely fascinating, I can’t see what Jessica, and the bank, are going to do next!

This book belongs to a series of three (so far) that you will want in print so you can read and re-read at any time. Jessica and the bank are getting along better but she still works too hard at being independent. Until Jessica realizes, without her full power she can only succeed with the help of others. She finally asks for help from friends to retrieve something from Leandras' home in exchange for information. Leandras is still mysterious, attractive and fae. His recovery time at the bank has not made Jessica trust him any more. The mysterious lizard is the only one who gives her help regardless of how she feels about it. Even then he surprises everyone. There is so much going on in #3 it's hard not to have any spoilers. I sincerely hope this series keeps going. If it were possible, I'd live across the street just so I could be a nosy neighbor watching the bank.

The third book in this series follows Jess on her next adventure, which she already had aplenty ever since securing a new job at the bank. Saving Leandras is a very dangerous task, yet the information he has is vital for protecting the Gateway. Now she also has to undo the spell she placed herself under to access her full magical abilities. The onslaught of attackers that want to access the Gateway does not cease, but one event that returns Jess' memories reveals another foe to be wary about..
This was a fast and enticing read, with interesting cast of characters that develop not only in this book but also the previous ones. There is also lots of mystery and suspense, drama, and plot twists that keep the reader on the edge. Very enjoyable series.

Full of weird and wonderful characters, my favourite has to be the bank itself, this is a fast paced magical adventure. Jessica has quite a lot on her plate starting with having to steal back a friends magic reserves for him, and she isn't actually sure if he is a friend. With a sentient bank to run, a portal to another world to protect and missing half of her own power she has quite a battle on her hands. In fact more than one battle and lots of blood and guts.
Its a good job the bank doesn't get too many customers!

This…is…incredible!!!

Jessica Northwood and the Bank are in a battle for survival and the action is amazing. She has some tough decisions to make and if she chooses wrong there is no going back and the Bank may not survive. Can she sacrifice old friends, can she trust anyone, and how did that lizard do that?

I already knew that this series was amazing but this is paranormal unhinged! The sun was coming up and I still could not put the book down and go to bed. I received an advance copy but my review is voluntary and honest. It ends with another cliff-hanger so all I can say is Kathrin Hutson better write faster – I NEED the next book!

Jessica has so much to learn, and with all she is up against, can she learn what she needs to know in time? Luckily Leandras knows some of what she needs to do, but how much can she trust a Fae? Strap in for some magical action, and learning some of the secrets that you have been waiting to know. I love Jessica, she is very determine and tries to do what's right, and I loved all the twists and turns of this tale, and the characters and the bank (got to love the bank). I loved this installment of this intriguing series, and I look forward to the next one.

Ohhh man, Leandras. There was that point where the % on your book is almost to 100 and you get to the last 2 sentences of the chapter and freak out that it can't end this way, and then there's one more chapter left. Don't worry, you are still left hanging, somewhat, but not as much as if it had ended just a little bit earlier. There would have been tears if it had. This installment and continuation of Jessica, Leandras and the Bank's adventure was a really fun ride. There is a lot of action, some set backs and some big wins for the team.

Jessica is fighting to keep her bank home and her realm safe. Past friends, foes and colleagues come together with her and a fae, Leandres, and they seek to keep yhings from falling apart - and as he seems to be acting with his own hidden agenda

Which friends and which instincts should Jessica trust? As more aspects to her being and skills are revealed, and more pieces of the puzzle fall into place, only to shift sideways again, little seems really completely make sense, except her frustration

Realm realigning and adventure enhancing challenges and frustrations

This is the third book in the series, and while I enjoyed the heck out of it, it was probably the least favorite of the three. Don’t get me wrong, this one was well-written, I really liked the action, and the plot was pushed along. I just am on the fence where Leandras is concerned. I want to say more, but I really can’t as I don’t want to spoil this book. He needs to be fleshed out a little more, and I’d like to learn more about him. Other than that, this latest was filled with revelations, secrets, and a great plot. Now, I’m just waiting to see what happens next now that Jessica has…well, read it and see. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Jessica is back and fighting way too many things at the same time. Secrets are revealed, secrets are exposed, answers given, danger lurks, and new and old characters come in and out of the story. Jessica gets closer to the bank and that pesky fae and they all set up a plan...... I loved the story and was hooked form the beginning. I loved the surprises and how convoluted things ended up being when Jessica was hoping it would turn out straight forward. Just a fun entertaining story with magic and fun characters and scenes.

Jessica is tired of flying blind and striking a deal with Leandras will give her the answers she needs to have in order to protect the Gateway. Now it’s easy: just get the gang together for an impossible heist to save an impossible fae and get some information to save the world. No problem. It’s fun watching the give and take between Jessica and Leandras and heartwarming to see her reunited with friends. Best though is her relationship with the bank, which turns snarkier and more real every day. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.

This entry in the Accessory to Magic series pretty much starts where the second entry ended. Jessica is still striving to save Leandras. Leandras is great as a foil for Jessica's issue but I'm still iffy about his character and I'm not sure where Kathrin Hutson will take his character. The real question for me is how a building became one of my favourite characters in the series? The banter between Jessica and the bank has me looking forward to more in the next book.

I enjoyed this book much more than the last one. The plot kept the book moving with tons of action and the reappearance of Jessica's old crew. Leandras was an interesting addition to the story, the mystery that surrounds him is intriguing and whether or not Jessica could trust him continued through to the end. Where some questions are answered and issues resolved, more are added and of course there is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end.

Jessica Northwood is still the Guardian of the Gate and is still only at half strength. When she asks her old team, except for Mel, to do one last job, things do not go as planned and she is stabbed in the back and almost dies. It is a wake-up call and Jessica realizes she truly needs her full power even though she is afraid she will lose control of her magic. This story has plenty of action and the use of magic. Highly recommended.

Unexpectedly good!

I’ll be honest when I bought this book it was because I was waiting on my other favorite series to catch up and release their next book and just need something to read. Wow, I glad I did! This series has quickly become one of my favorites! I love a good series with a plot and action. Sometimes paranormal series end up being just erotica wrapped in a poorly developed story line. This is not the case here great story with the possibility of a romance. You will not regret picking up this series!

Another cliffhanger, it seems every time Jessica figures she has it figured out something else comes up. Leandras has a lot of secrets and I am still not sure if he is good or bad. Jessica gets the old gang back together for one last heist, what could go wrong? So much! Now what’s next? I would recommend this book and series to all.

The story and character development is moving along excitingly. Jessica is a strong, engaging and a complex no nonsense woman that can kick tail with the best of them. She has more action, great friends and even more enemies. But, she manages to handle all these adventures with intensity and just with great thrilling awesomeness.

The third installment of the Accessory to Magic series picks up essentially where book 2 left off. Jessica races to save Leandras before he expires. The bank has much snark. Things go from bad to worse. A good time was had by all - more or less.

This is my favourite installment in the series to date. In addition to expanding the universe just a little, more of Jessica's backstory is revealed which adds depth to her, and helps explain some of her reactions. The action is pretty much non-stop, with the stakes continually getting higher, so the pacing is break-neck. The character development was excellent.

Everything I look for in a novel was present in this one - and the banter between Jessica and the bank never fails to entertain me. I particularly like Confucius and am very curious to see how his role will develop as the series continues.

I received an ARC via the author.

I enjoy these books, with the snarky banter, the strange magical people, and the mystery/horror behind the door. Jessica is trying to do the right thing, but is not quite sure what that is. Leandras is being the typical sneaky fae and the bank is just a smart alec, but funny. Along the way, secrets and lizards will be revealed. Together they make an entertaining read.

Book 3.

Yay the mysteries are unraveling! I’m still not sure why she had to be kept in the dark about her role as guardian. I’m still annoyed by the never ending interruptions and distractions to draw out the story. But overall this is much improved from book 2 and I’m pretty curious to see how it ends. I really like Jessica and her bank.
