TEMPERED TIN

FOREWARD One might wonder about my purpose for concocting Gothic short stories about 19th century tin photographs, long ago so popular worldwide. I was enticed by the challenge of imagining the events in the depicted subjects’ lives which wrought changes or drove them to startling, sometimes horrifying acts. This challenge provided the stimulus for my creating these new tales and those in my previous book TIN TALES (2013). In the following stories, I present my interpretations of these photographs employing various literary styles (first person/second person, prose/poetry), varying locales (the U.S., Europe, even Africa), different ethnic and gender types. An undercurrent of magic and evil flows through these pages like the ripples of Styx. A harlequin, a faun, a velocipede, a sculptor, a paralyzed boy, a hunted buffalo, and a snake charmer are my subjects. Animals, including horses, dogs, pythons, buffaloes, and assorted African veld creatures, participate in the plots. Success is a nebulous and subjective concept; but my hopes (i.e. “purpose”) are to enthrall, thrill, frighten, and mystify the reader and to stimulate an awareness of these long-deceased ancestors, who may have dwelled in their own “Twilight Zone.”

### Goodreads Review: *TEMPERED TIN* by Bill Moorefield

*TEMPERED TIN* is an intriguing collection of Gothic short stories inspired by nineteenth-century tin photographs, transforming historical images into imaginative tales filled with mystery, darkness, and supernatural possibilities.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this collection is its central concept. Each photograph captures a moment from the past, but the lives, experiences, and secrets of the people portrayed remain open to interpretation. Bill Moorefield takes that uncertainty as an invitation to imagine the events that might have shaped these individuals, creating stories that explore the hidden histories behind seemingly ordinary images.

The collection features an unusual variety of subjects, including a harlequin, a faun, a sculptor, a paralyzed boy, a hunted buffalo, and a snake charmer. Animals also play important roles in the narratives, adding further opportunities for unexpected encounters and unsettling developments. The stories move across the United States, Europe, and Africa, giving the collection a broad geographical scope and a variety of cultural settings.

Another interesting feature is the author's use of different literary styles. By incorporating first-person and second-person narration, prose, and poetry, Moorefield explores different ways of presenting his imagined histories. This variety suits a collection built around distinct photographs and characters, allowing each story to develop its own atmosphere and perspective.

The Gothic elements give the book much of its appeal. An undercurrent of magic and evil runs through the stories, creating an atmosphere in which ordinary circumstances can give way to strange, disturbing, or frightening events. The combination of historical inspiration and supernatural imagination makes the collection particularly interesting for readers who enjoy fiction that blurs the boundaries between the familiar and the uncanny.

Beyond its darker elements, *TEMPERED TIN* also encourages reflection on the people who lived before us. The photographs serve as reminders that every preserved image represents a life with its own experiences, relationships, hopes, and struggles. Imagining those forgotten stories offers a fascinating way to consider how much of the past remains unknown.

Readers who enjoy Gothic fiction, supernatural short stories, historical settings, and imaginative explorations of human nature may find this collection appealing. Its unusual premise and varied subjects offer an alternative to more conventional collections, drawing inspiration from artifacts that might otherwise be viewed only as historical curiosities.

Overall, *TEMPERED TIN* presents a creative approach to Gothic storytelling, combining vintage photography, historical imagination, and supernatural intrigue. It invites readers to look beyond the faces captured in old photographs and consider the strange, unsettling, and sometimes extraordinary stories that might lie behind them.
