The daughter of Loyalists, Kira Neville has been dreading the day she will be forced to marry the boy the Commonwealth chooses for her. Arranged marriage is just a part of life in the walled city of Lincoln and even though she knows life beyond the walls is dangerous, Kira is desperate to find another way of life. Because she already knows she could never be what her parents or society want her to be.
But the world of the pleasure-seeking Loyalists is a seductive one and Kira finds diversion in the underground nightclubs where the elite of the Commonwealth mingle with the Shamed, citizens disgraced by their Separatist heritage. The thrill of meeting the beautiful and enigmatic Vi, one of the Shamed, keeps her coming back for more.
Kira can’t help but wonder if staying in the city would be such a bad thing. Staying, however, means giving up any hope of freedom. And worse than that is the danger her heart is in when her admiration for Vi blossoms into forbidden love.
Will Kira heed the call to duty or resistance?
This is a young adult dystopian lesbian romance with themes that might be darker and a little too true-to-life at times.
Lucy True writes quirky urban fantasy and paranormal romance. She also writes lesbian romance as Jea Hawkins. She is a gamer, lover of history, as well as strange and whimsical things. There should probably be an “I Brake for Cemeteries” bumper sticker on her car. A passionate genealogist, long-time cross-stitcher, and kitchen witch, she lives in a one-horse town in rural eastern Nebraska with her sometimes-better half, two witchlings, two cats, and a very loquacious caique.
One of the under 99c deals I got at some point. Not a bad dystopian young adult story. Almost similar to Divergent, with a closed off Commonwealth that caters to a classist society who controls everything from clothing to relationship matches, in a very hetero-patriarchal world. With threats of reconditioning and being outcast to dangers beyond the wall if you do not conform.
Kira knows her feelings for her female best friend are to be pushed down. She always followed the rules and is considered a "goody two shoes". One night her friend convinces her to let loose at an illegal underground nightclub, and there she meets the enigmatic Vi, and learns far more about the society in which she was raised and it's unfairness.
It was fast paced and a quick story, About two hours. So because of the length, not a huge amount of depth or detail. But it was still an entertaining story. Unfortunately it did feel a bit anticlimactic at the end.
4 stars. This was like a mix of the Delirium trilogy and Divergent and it was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed this and wish it were longer because I didn’t want it to end. Kira was a naive but very likable character and I loved her growth and development. Her romance with Vi was adorable and I thought Vi was a complete and total bad ass and really compelling. They worked well together and I liked their chemistry. The writing was really good and I liked the world the author created. Such a good read and I will no doubt be checking out more from this author.
