Definitely Not Dating

Rate this book
It’s a chance to start over for both of them…

Everleigh Girard always dates the wrong men at the worst times. The last debacle cost her a job and an apartment. But thanks to a crazy lottery win, she and her friends have a fresh start restoring a historic inn. Determined to make it a success, Everleigh swears off the dangers of dating entirely. Except…the town’s police chief is distractingly hot. So how much trouble could friends with benefits really cause?

Police chief Matt Halliday always puts protecting his town first. He’s blindsided when his house mysteriously burns down, and grateful his friends rent him a room at their inn while they finish renovations. It’s a great deal. Mostly. It’s hard to resist the very beautiful Everleigh. Love is permanently off the table for him—but lust is definitely on.

After their first red-hot kiss, keeping it casual is impossible. Can Everleigh teach Matt to trust again—especially when he’s keeping a secret that may put him and his new friends at risk?

I am having so much fun reading this new series from Christi Barth. I love these four long-time friends who have bonded together to form a family of the heart, uprooted their lives, and moved to Maryland to restore the dilapidated inn they unexpectedly won in a Christmas Eve lottery. With an enormous amount of work ahead of them, and a limited amount of time, they make a pact to not date until the inn is open and making money. We saw how well that worked (not) in book one, The Accidental Fiancé and it's not looking too promising for Ever and Matt in this one either. Which, of course, makes this romance fan giddy with delight.

Barth has assembled such an intriguing cast of characters for this series. I really enjoy the dynamic not only among the four friends but also with members of the community as business ties and friendships form and begin to deepen. There are some great secondary characters in the series and I'm appreciating the fact that Barth continues to develop them from book to book. The fact that Matt is keeping secrets from two of those characters - friends (and inn owners) Teague and Alex - and the fact that those secrets are tied to the woman they view as a little sister adds another layer of complexity to his story. And the scene where they confront him? Perfection!

Ever and Matt have a wonderful chemistry that sparks whenever they're in the same vicinity and they're finding it increasingly difficult to ignore it, especially after his house burns and he moves into the not-quite-ready-to-open inn. But they also both have emotional baggage that has them convincing themselves that they're not really "dating" (they so are).

They both have great character arcs that exhibit a significant amount of growth on each of their parts. Ever, especially, has deep-seated self-worth issues that are the result of years of emotional abuse from her parents. My heart ached for her but also I cheered for the progress she makes. She comes so far from the beginning of book one and the pace Barth sets for her is just right. I loved Matt's support of her. Of course, he also has some lessons to learn and they aren't exactly easy. In the end, though, he comes through with flying colors and proves to me - and Ever - that he's worthy of her love. ::SIGH::

There's also a suspense thread that runs through this book that helps to develop Matt's character and adds a touch of mystery to the romance. I enjoyed the added depth it brought to the story and the fact that it kept me guessing as to the who, how, and why.

The third book in the series, Wrong for Him (9/27/21), features a best friend's little sister trope, one of my favorites. I can't wait to discover what Barth has planned for Amelia Kirkland and former Special Forces soldier (and her brother's best friend), Teague Sullivan.

Everleigh and Matt’s story in Definitely Not Dating by Christi Barth, book two in her Love Lottery series, is a wonderful, heartwarming, and enjoyable tale. Everleigh Girard dates the wrong men, some of them even costing her jobs and apartments. Winning that crazy lottery gave her and her friends a fresh start restoring a historic inn. New location, new jobs, and they are all determined to make it a success. Everleigh has sworn off dating, no distractions, at least until the inn is opened and running smoothly. Police chief Matt Halliday has always put protecting his town before anything else. Matt is shocked when his house mysteriously burns down and grateful when his friends rent him a room at their inn, even while they are finishing renovations. It’s a great deal and convenient, except he is struggling to resist the beautiful Everleigh. Matt has decided to never love again, but he could do attraction and lust. Everleigh has tried so hard to resist Matt and keep to her promise of no men, but friends with benefits with Matt is quite tempting. When their first kiss is steamy, as is the second, and third, having a causal relationship is going to be impossible. After all Matt has been through, Everleigh wonders if Matt will ever trust another woman, and if she could be the one. When Everleigh discovers that Matt is keeping a secret that would not only put him at risk but also her, her friends and the inn, she wonders if she can trust him.

Ms. Barth wrote a wonderful story filled with sizzling chemistry, magnetism, wonderful dialogue, and endearing characters giving Everleigh and Matt a chance for love. I recommend Definitely Not Dating to other readers.

Definitely Not Dating by Christi Barth
Publisher: Tule Publishing, American Heart
Genre: Romance
Publication Date: May 4, 2021

Definitely Not Dating by Christi Barth is the second book in the Love Lottery series. I had not read the previous book, but found that the author provided enough backstory so I could read this as standalone romance novel.

This was a wonderful story of forgiveness, self-discovery, second chance, friendship, and most of all, learning to love oneself. I loved seeing Everleigh's growth throughout the book. Her growth throughout the book was evident and allowed other character to work on their issues too. I really enjoyed the depth of this story. I also thought it was neat how crime solving was also included since I am a cozy mystery junkie! The romance was well done and steamy! I loved their chemistry and I was rooting for Everleigh and Matt the whole time!

This was a great read and I couldn't put it down! I really enjoyed reading this and look forward to reading the other books in the series!

I'm so grateful to Christi Barth, Tule Publishing, American Heart, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

Definitely not dating tells the story of Everleigh and Matt. They've both been burnt badly in the past and as a result, are avoiding relationships. As far as Matt is concerned, this is a permanent thing. After his wife cheated on him, he never wants to put himself into a position where he is as vulnerable and able to be hurt again. For Everleigh, it's a temporary state. She wants to prove to herself and her friends that she doesn't need to be in a relationship and that she can put time and attention into her work. Unfortunately, for them at least, they can't seem to resist one another.
I enjoyed this story, it has a bit of a friends to lovers element to it, as Everleigh and Matt are clearly as much friends are they are lovers. They haven't known each other very long, but Matt sees things in her that other people seem to miss.
Matt is very sweet, as much as he tries to avoid his feelings for Everleigh, he's really hopeless to resist. Aside from something that he gets completely wrong he does everything he can to help her see her value. Everleigh is quite a fun character, she's a real flirt, which I love, especially as it's not shown as being a bad thing (which it's not). The two of them work really well as a couple and I enjoyed reading their story.
This is the second book in the series. I usually prefer to start at the beginning, but it doesn't really matter that I haven't read the first book. I am quite tempted to go back and read it though.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Definitely Not Dating is the second story in Christi Barth’s Love Lottery series. The premise of this story intrigued me: Everleigh and Matt each had compelling reasons not to get involved with anybody let alone each other yet they simply couldn’t keep their hands off each other. I loved watching them trying not to get involved and definitely trying to keep their relationship secret. Throw in a dash of intrigue in the form of an arsonist on the loose as well as the continual pressure Everleigh and her friends face to make a success of the historic Three Oaks Inn, which they won in a lottery and you have a thoroughly entertaining story. This has been a lovely continuation of the series and I’m now looking forward to book three.

Winning the Inn couldn’t have come at a better time for Everleigh as it allowed her to put some time and distance between her and her most recent romantic debacle. She is focused on ensuring that they make the business viable however having a sexy Sheriff as their first guest was the one thing she hadn’t prepared for.

Matt is determined to keep his relationships with woman casual as he has learnt the hard way what happens if you don’t. When a house emergency finds himself staying at the Inn he never expected that the biggest challenge would be denying the chemistry between him and Everleigh.

This is a heartwarming story about two people who help each other heal from the past so that they can have a future together.

Any book from Christi Barth is worth a read!! She's one of those authors who a has an immense knack for wit and humor, and perfectly inter-wines with her stories. Her first series, "Naked Men Novel", to this day is one of my top favorites that I reach out to read when I need some soul food ;)

Her new series Love Lottery is no exception, and she just has the right mix of characters in Matt Halliday and Everleigh Girard, as unusual as the names and the circle of characters she's got for this series. A tinge of suspense and a heavy dose of wonderful characters gives this new series a definite win from me as I enjoy each book.

Wow I say I’m not much for mystery but the part ot this one that is mystery not just passion got me hooked, not that the sizzle between Everleigh and the chief of police wasn’t just hot it was not the only thing flaming, and trying to figure out who and why of the arson made a mystery nut out of me. Sure glad that teaching each other to trust again worked for Matt and Everleigh so the glow as the story wrapped up was from the warming of my heart for this couple who quickly became one of my favorite couples.

Second in the series but can be read as a stand alone. I did not read the first book and it was not an issue. Everleigh is one of the owners rehabbing the historic inn. When the chief of Police's house burns down in the middle of the night he ends up staying at the not yet open inn. Matt, the chief, and Everleigh have an instant connection that neither of them wants to act on. She has a bad track record of making bad decisions when she is with a man. Matt has been burned but love and is not interested in a repeat. When they are unable to control themselves they have a secret fling. Ever promised not to get into a relationship until after the Inn was in the red. Now Matt has to solve the mystery of his house burning down and he needs to convince Ever that they definitely are dating. Good read.

Great addition to this new series. Matt & Everleigh were a great pairing, both had issues with trust when it came to love & relationships. They had strong chemistry that everyone noticed but them. I enjoyed the mystery around who caused the fire that burned down Matt’s home. I also continued enjoying the friendship & partnership between Alex, Amelia, Teague & Everleigh. Definitely recommend. Thank you Tule for the pleasure of reading an arc of book two in this series.
Like the first book it is a romance with a long story. It involves four people so it gives you back history and then launches into the story between the main characters.
It is a really good book and I look forward to book three in the series.

This is an entertaining book that I just loved. I fell in love with the characters - especially Ever, who I'm sure most women can relate to, as she tries to overcome her history of picking out losers to date. We've all done it, but Ever has done it in a way that effectively blew up her life. When they win a hotel lottery, she, along with her friends, sees it as a way to get a fresh start.

Matt is the local police chief, and a friend of Ever and her friends. When his house burns down, he takes a room in the inn. While Ever and Matt have been attracted to each other, being under the same room proves to be too much temptation. They are committed to not dating and their non-dating relationship begins.

I loved the way Matt and Ever were together, but mostly, I loved how Ever found a way to overcome her past and recreate a better version of herself. Along the way, Matt helped her, while also overcoming his own past. Their relationship was sexy and sweet. and made me fall in love with them.

If you enjoy the genre, you will love this book. The author is on my must read authors' list.

I have read several books by Christi Barth and have enjoyed them all! The same is true of Definitely Not Dating. Her characters are well written showcasing both their strengths and weaknesses. DNF’d after reading a third of the book. I also read the last chapter to see how it ended.

I really wanted to enjoy this book but sadly I didn’t. First of all, from the synopsis of the book, you already know a lot that will happen and when I stopped reading at a third of the book, most of the synopsis hadn’t even started. The main thing that I didn’t like was the fact that this read a lot like one of those cheesy tv romance movies where everything that happens is predictable and cringey. I didn’t like the relationship development between the 2 main characters because it was already obvious what would happen but the « oh should I, no I shouldn’t » was annoying to me. Special mention to that part :

-What are you doing here Sheriff ?
-I’m a Chief.
-Chief of what ? Hotness ?

The flirting was terrible to me and there was no build up to it. I guess that may be a preference of mine.

If everything mentioned is not something that could ruin your enjoyment of a book, then you should probably give it a try but sadly this one wasn’t for me !

I easily feel back into the Love Lottery world with Matt and Everleigh in Definitely Not Dating. And they aren’t, are they? Well, once again this author has combined a sizzling couple with a touch of mystery and an eventual happy ending for them, but it’s going to take some time and some secrets to be revealed before that can happen.

When Matt’s home burns down in the middle of the night he’s offered a room at the not quite ready for business and under renovations inn (at a reduced rate, gotta pay those bills) until things settle for him. There was already an awareness between Ever and Matt, now they’re in much closer contact with Ever wondering how in the world she’s going to avoid the attraction building between them. Neither wants a relationship, each has their reasons but friends with benefits… in secret? That could work just fine until those pesky emotions get in the way and Matt’s secrets begin to unravel. Matt will never marry again, not after how his ex treated him. Ever always picks the losers and cannot trust herself when in love. Quite the couple, except maybe all they needed, was to find the right person to have love last for a lifetime.

With a sizzling attraction, house fires, secrets, and perhaps an unknown danger facing them Matt and Everleigh have a lot on their plates right now. Add falling in love to that mix and you’ll find an enjoyable, believable romance to devour. I had fun with this couple, there is humor, odd clothing choices, and some fumbling flirting that doesn’t always hit just right, but the intent is clearly there to take this secret relationship to the next level… and public. Now all they need to do is trust each other enough to take the risk and figure out what’s going on with Matt and his secrets.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Definitely Not Dating is book two in the Love Lottery series by Christi Barth. I read book one and each can be read as a standalone. However, I’m going to do you a favor and map out the characters. There are four friends who win a lottery. There is Alex who has a sister named Amelia. Amelia and Everleigh are best friends. Alex and Teague are best friends. Therefore, Teague and Alex are like brothers to Everleigh. Book one, The Accidental Fiancé, was the love story between Alex and a local town’s folk, Sydney. The second book, Definitely Not Dating is a love story between Everleigh and another local citizen, Matt. I actually want to write this review fast so that I can start the third book in the series. Ha, ha. The next one, Wrong for Him, is going to be a love story between Amelia and Teague and I’m seriously excited to start reading it. I have one main concern; I’m not seeing book four listed or announced yet! I am really looking forward to a love story between Nora, the inn’s cook, and James, the high school shop teacher. I’ve fallen in love with all these characters.

If the synopsis sounds interesting, then definitely pick it up and start reading. The secret that Matt is keeping is a good one. I was riveted to my seat worrying about what was going to happen next.

The romance between Everleigh and Matt is definitely sensual. They each have personal issues to resolve before they can learn to trust again. I enjoyed being part of their blossoming relationship.

I enjoyed everything about this book from style of writing, cast of characters to original plot development.

I wasn’t exaggerating when I said that I am in a hurry to start book three. So, I’m going to conclude with this: Definitely Not Dating is definitely a must read!

Christi Barth’s second book, Definitely Not Dating, in the Love Lottery series has the quintessential humor, quick wit and banter, and rapid dialogue and repartee that I’ve come to love from this author. From the opening prologue…which very nicely recaps the start to the series with the four friends/family’s lottery win…I was once again immersed in the trials, tribulations, and sheer joy that this series have brought me.

With Matt’s stark and near tragic emergence on the scene, I was immediately drawn to his larger than life persona and sense of fairness. He and Everleigh captivated my heart with their yin/yang personalities and chemistry. With the added suspense and tension that was woven into the story’s premise, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough just to get to the “who done it”…which came as a total surprise.

As the the initial four, Alex, Amelia, Everleigh, and Teague settle into small town life, and their group of friends, and chosen family continues to grow, so does my emotional attachment to the entire group, and their stories. I’m looking forward to see what Ms Barth has in store for Teague and Amelia.

Unfortunately, this book was definitely not as good as I had hoped. Sure, it had some familiar elements I always go for, hence, being intrigued enough by the synopsis and having read the first book to give it a try. However, this budding relationship feel flat with me from the get go. I never really thought they had a well established emotional connection. They were just two very pretty people who found one another attractive. I guess you could throw in Matt felt pity for her, as well, which I'll get right to, folks.

Everleigh was forever pitying herself. She played the role of a self apologetic woman who was very insecure regarding her past, present, and assumed predestined, future, dismal decision making skills regarding life and especially love. She certainly didn't need enemies pointing out her flaws, because she had that covered herself. Her shining light was her determination to prove herself wrong. It didn't help her so called loyal, caring, now inn owning posse of friends labeled and often treated her with the same mindset. That got old and annoyed me to no end. For supposedly being her besties and having her back, I felt they were always looking down their superior noses at her to a certain extent.

Opening with too much time rehashing, practically verbatim the same conversations & event that was presented in the first book, I was immediately questioning the pacing of the story. Even a completely destructive house fire didn't heat up the plot overly much. At least from the time I stopped reading. Yep, I found myself overly bored so moved on, folks.

The next book, Wrong for Him, will feature two of these best friends in a likely cliche, forbidden romance set up. Forbidden, of course, because they are more worried about what their friends think than following their own minds and hearts, at least for awhile. Honestly, I'm surprised Teague is being paired with Amelia, because I was dang sure Norah, the chef, had caught his eye. Go figure, huh.

Anyway, here's to hoping others enjoy this romantic tale. I wish the author continued writing success with this series.

Title: Definitely Not Dating, Series: Love Lottery (Book 2), Author: Christi Barth, Pages: 284, pub date: 5/4/21, stand-alone romance but part of a series, constant self apologetic heroine, didn't feel their chemistry or connection, wasn't as good as I hoped, lost interest.

Book 1 - The Accidental Fiance - Alex & Sydney (2/23/21)
Book 2 - Definitely Not Dating - Everleigh & Matt (5/4/21)
Book 3 - Wrong for Him - Amelia & Teague (9/24/21)

Definitely Not Dating by Christi Barth is the second book in her Love Lottery series. Everleigh (Ever) and Matt are the wonderful heroes in this book. Ever has always been very susceptible to the men in her life, with disastrous results. When she lost her job, she was thrilled to be part of a winning lottery ticket to an old historic inn; she and her best friends, Alex, Amelia and Teague move to Maryland shore to renovate the inn. Ever’s job at the inn during the renovation is public relations, as well as helping with the decorating and clean up. Because of her bad luck with men, Ever has sworn of dating and only concentrate on the inn and the town. But best laid plans do not always work out, especially when she finds herself being distracted by the town Police Chief, Matt.

Matt Halliday, finds himself homeless when a fire burns down his house; which he feels was not an accident. Teague offers Matt a place to stay at the inn temporarily, even though the inn is still closed. Early the following morning, Ever goes to check out sounds coming from one of the rooms, and to her shock she comes across Matt (shirtless and a hunk). He explains why he is there, and though she was not happy that Teague didn’t tell her, she finds herself fighting off her attraction to him. In a short time, a friendship will begin between them, that will lead to a steamy relationship. Both have their own disastrous relationships in the past, that holds them back from anything permanent.

Both Ever and Matt were wonderful characters that I couldn’t help loving them together. Matt had been burned in a previous marriage, and he finds Ever’s bubbly personality very addictive, making it hard not to resist her charm. Ever was a wonderful heroine, a lot of fun, quite a flirt, and over time builds her confidence in helping the Inn succeed. I loved the parts with renovating the Inn, as we get to see the team and Nora (chef) work hard to finish and open the Inn. There was another element of the background story, with Matt investigating who was behind the fire at his house, and was anyone else in danger. This was very well done.

Definitely Not Dating was a sweet, heartwarming, romance that was very well written by Christi Barth. Ever and Matt were a super couple the made this a heartwarming and enjoy story. I wholly suggest you read this fun romantic story, which had a great couple, wonderful characters, and sexy. If you have not started this series, then you should read the first book, even if this reads well as a standalone.

Definitely Not Dating by Christi Barth
This is Everleigh Girard and Matt Halliday's story.
“Everleigh?” Alex asked. His ice-blue eyes sparkled, like he knew she’d say yes and they could start celebrating again.
Rats. She’d been worrying about this moment all night, barely sleeping after their celebration. “I’m really happy for you, Alex.”
“For all of us, you mean?”
Matt Halliday wasn’t overly modest. After his years in the Coast Guard, he didn’t care about who saw his body in a uniform, or in trunks… or even his boxer briefs.
It didn’t matter. Bodies were bodies. Or so he’d thought.Turned out that standing in just a bathrobe in front of his neighbors and the volunteer fire brigade?
brigade? Under the harsh red and white emergency vehicle lights? It made him more than a little self-conscious.

Definitely Not Dating is the second book in the wonderful Love Lottery series by Christi Barth. This series is quickly becoming my favorite series by this author. The whole idea of winning a run down hotel, then renovating it by four friends is a marvelous idea. This is Everleigh Girard chance to have her happily -ever-after. She is a friend of the two siblings who are part of the group. I enjoyed seeing the interaction between them all. Police chief Matt Halliday is a hometown boy so he brings a different perspective to the group.

This story is just as great as the first but has a mystery concerning the night house fire at Matt’s. This is what throws Everleigh and Matt today as he needs a place to stay after the fire. The hotel is not open but an exception is made for him.

These are two people who have not had good luck in the area of love. Needless to say both have issues now. Everleigh and Matt have a strong chemistry that really works for them, along with an admiration and friendship. Flirting is like a superpower for these two, making this a fun read. Everleigh has low self-confidence in abilities other than her looks. In some ways she seems much younger than the others of the lottery group. Growth is needed. I enjoyed watching that happen for these two likable characters.

An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Everleigh and her 3 best friends won a Inn in a Christmas time lottery and they all embark on this new career together. I believe each book in the series will focus on one of the friends. Each friend brings a different skill set to the table and Everleigh believes she has little to offer and vows that this time she won't let her weakness get in the way of success. Everleigh's biggest weakness seems to be men and the lengths that she will go to make them happy, so she swears off men until this Inn is a success. This new independence from men gets tested when Police Chief Matt moves into the Inn after his house mysteriously burns down.

This is the second book in the series and though I didn't read the first in the series I had no trouble following this one. There were a few instances where they referenced events that happened in the first but nothing that required the first book be read. This was a fun, bubbly story that was a real quick read. Everleigh and Matt were great and had chemistry from their first interaction.

Everleigh's insecurities about herself and self worth were something that I believe most people can relate to so it was wonderful to see her build herself up and start believing in herself and her worth. That was a great unexpected side plot that I really enjoyed. I would have like for the mystery that Matt was investigating around his house and the fire be a bit more dramatic and a bigger part of the plot but this book was all about the romance and the mystery was only there to further that plot.

Overall it was a fun, quick read that I could easily see myself reading on the beach or on some downtime as you can always pick the plot back up quick!

This is the second book in this standalone series by Christie Barth. I had read and enjoyed the first book, but believe each is its own story with not a lot of referencing back. Matt is the sheriff of a small town in Maryland where 4 friends won an Inn which was in terrible shape. They have all worked hard to bring the Inn back, and Everleigh who thinks she is the one who will always screw things up is very worried about doing her part. The others trust her completely and make her their PR person. The story starts with Matt’s house burning down, and even though the Inn is not quite ready to open, one of the crew, Teague, offers him a room. This starts the beginnings of a romance, between Matt and Everleigh, but because they have both been burned by romance before, they try to deny their attraction. This made for a totally fun, heartwarming read. The setting, the four friends and their relationships, as well as Matt and Everleigh made for an enjoyable read. Can’t wait for the next book!

Good Story!

'Definitely Not Dating' is about Matt and Everleigh; when Everleigh and her friends win the lottery they gain an inn, to avoid any trouble the group make a celibacy pact. So they move, to renovate it and eventually get it running. Matt's house has recently burned down and since he is friends with one of the group members - Teagan, he can seek shelter at the inn before its opening. When Everleigh hears a noise that night, she goes down to check what's going on, that's when she finds Matt! Teagan didn't let her know what happened and that Matt was staying there. They start to get close and vow to remain friends but we all know how that goes... But Matt has a secret that he has kept from her and her friends, a secret that will put them all at risk!

I enjoyed reading this book, however, it took me a while to get into the story, it might just be me. I like that Matt supported Everleigh and that he didn't judge her for her past mistakes, and that she did the same for him!

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
