A brand new Western adventure from C. Wayne Winkle!
Gideon Parnell and his half-brother, Joshua, survive the Civil War and return home to find their home burned. Gideon also discovers his intended didn’t wait for him as she said she would, but decided to marry a Yankee officer. With no desire to stay around her, he decides to go West. Joshua joins him and the two decide to gather up some wild Texas cattle and make a drive to market in Kansas. Along the way, an incident occurs that sets them on a totally different career path: bounty hunting.
A great story of battling different elements. I felt like I was right there in the saddle, eating the dust, and firing my six-shooter. The characters have depth and the plot flows nicely.
I have read other books by this author but this one was nowhere near as good, despite the fact that they were far from outstanding. The plot is facile with poorly drawn characters and based on inadequate research. The dialogue is stilted and the descriptive passages inadequate. I also found it racist in the vilification of the Choctaw people, a nation of farmers and one of the most peaceable native American tribes who, historically, never raised arms against the immigrant whites and were an active part of the Confederacy. As a long time teacher of English, I can honestly say that I have read better work by teenage students,
Gideon and Joshua leads us on an exceptionally well written series of realistic old western folklore adventures, as they stay busy picking u bad guys, staying a step ahead of Northern Army themselves! A little different but definitely another outstanding descriptive rendition of how our old American West was finally tamed!
Definitely another five star entertaining revelation of old western frontier folklore justice, as Gideon and Joshua attempted to find themselves after their tour of duty representing the South in the Civil War! They attempt to find themselves catching wanted men, especially former Confederate Soldiers whom the Yankees had placed a bounty on! Really an exceptionally well written series of outstanding storylines throughout this compelling western masterpiece as Mr. Winkle is so adept in his successful descriptiveness of each and every exciting episode! Too, his outstanding selection of characters are unsurpassed in their commanding assignments throughout this polarizing series of unending exciting heartwarming episodes from beginning to the very end! These two compelling characters, with Joshua being anything but compatible with Gideon, managed to blaze their own trail across the West, first as cowboys, and secondly as hunters of Southern miscreants, who had bounties on their heads! Outstanding events from beginning to end! Certainly recommend this compassionately motivated story to all readers, but you western addicted fanatics will definitely be appeased within the first few pages of this compelling western masterpiece, as these two half-brothers, as Joshua proclaimed every time Gideon introduced themselves! Joshua proves to be an obnoxious sort, but Gideon goes above and beyond when he attempts to rescue him from a group of hostile Indians! Anyhow, even you non-western enthusiasts will be appeased following these two, as they create their own destiny, when these two begin their post-war adventures in the old West after the Civil War ended!!!😃
I like the Parnell brothers. Gideon is surely the most level headed one. Joshua needs to get over his hot headedness and insecurities. I didn’t like his reasonings—just kill someone (even if they are wanted dead or alive) and then lie about it or makeup a story. Life doesn’t seem to mean much to him. Surprised how fast the author married Gideon off in this series. Hope we don’t have another dead Indian wife and terminated pregnancies like in another series! Onto book two!
This book has a lot of non-stop action and adventure. Two brothers from the civil war come together to run a cattle drive and then become bounty hunters. They make a lot of money and then have to leave it behind to go for more adventures in the next book.
This book.is the funniest story I have read in a long time! These two brothers, oops HALF-BROTHERS, have some of the worse times I have encountered in a Western novel since Hoss Cartwright, and Little Joe of bonanza fame. Enjoy, I did. It is really a page.turner.
The ending was to abrupt, but hopefully will be p picked up in the next book. C h aracters are likeable, so it was a page turner. Gideon and Joshua are tough men with soft hearts.
Two brothers survive the civil war, gather a herd of long horns, and try bounty hunting. Along the way, one brother finds a wife. The brothers continue west.
This was a good read that keeps you interested and doesn't let you relax in the entire story. There is always something happening, good bad,or indifferent action abounds.
