Danger lurks everywhere for Central Oregon’s fire crews, but the biggest risk of all might be losing their hearts…

Burn Zone

Smokejumper Lincoln Reid is speechless to see Jacob Hartman among his squad’s new recruits. Linc had promised his late best friend he’d stay away from his little brother. And yet here Jacob is…and almost instantly, the same temptation Linc has always felt around him is causing way too many problems.

Jacob gets everyone’s concerns, but he’s waited years for his shot at joining the elite smokejumping team, hoping to honor his brother’s memory. He’s ready to tackle any challenge Linc throws his way, and senses the chemistry between them—chemistry Linc insists on ignoring —is still alive and kicking. This time, Jacob’s determined to get what he wants.

But the closer they get, the more Linc’s plan to leave at the end of the season risks him breaking another promise: the one his heart wants to make to Jacob.

High Heat

Smoke jumping is Garrick Nelson’s life. Nothing, not severe injuries nor the brutal physical therapy that follows, is going to stop him from getting back with his crew. But when a lost dog shows up on his front porch, he can’t turn her away, and he can’t take care of her on his own. Thankfully, help comes in the form of his new sexy, dog-loving neighbor. As they work together, trying to re-home their little princess, Garrick can’t resist his growing attraction for the other man, even though he knows this guy isn’t the staying type.

Rain Fisher doesn’t take anything too seriously. He dances through life, one adventure at a time, never settling in one place for too long. When his hot, conveniently buff, neighbor shows up on his doorstep, dog in tow, Rain’s determined to not just save the adorable puppy, but her reluctant owner as well. He never expects their flirtation might tempt him into stay put once and for all...

Feel the Fire

Fire behavior specialist Luis Riviera goes where his job takes him. But when he’s assigned to an arson investigation in Central Oregon—the place he left his broken heart twenty years ago—he’s afraid of being burned all over again.

Tucker Ryland had planned to join his first love, Luis, in LA after high school graduation, but life got in the way. Now a fire management expert and a divorced father of teen twins, Tucker’s thrown for a loop when he finds himself working side by side with his Luis, now all grown up and more intriguing than ever.

Though consumed by a grueling fire season and family responsibilities, the two men discover their bond has never truly broken. Tentative kisses turn to passionate nights. But smoking sheets aside, old hurts and new truths stand in the way of this time being the start of forever.

Smoke jumpers

The Hotshots Collection binds three novels by Albert, focused on a fire fighting camp near Bend Oregon. While each focuses on developing a relationship between a specific pairing, the stage is broadly cast and populated with team members, families and an interesting small town.

The first novel in the collection is Burn Zone, set in central Oregon. The protagonists are Lincoln, experienced smoke jumper, and Jacob, a rookie and youngest brother to Wyatt, a team member with Linc who had died recently in a jump. The plot is full of angst, as Jacob revisits his puppy love and Linc deals with a promise.toWyatt. Albert plays the family dynamics expertly, as well as the fire fighter crews. The sex scenes are well done, without scorching details. I particularly enjoyed the frisson of control in foreplay. Hunky men details are a bit too glossed over for me. 4.5 stars

In High Heat, the story continues with a focus on Garrick, team member to Linc and Jacob from the first book. He has partially recovered from his injuries sustained smoke jumping, self isolating in his home while striving during PT to resume his career. A stray dog brings him in contact with his neighbor's grandson Rain, the product of a Portland commune. Bonding over Cookie, the relationship grows despite the chance that it is temporary. Angst triggers communication, revelation yields compromise, dreams are modified. Albert writes a very thought provoking story with some poignant scenes, mixing in (and educating about) passion with a person with physical limitations. No smoke jumping in this episode, but more education on fighting fires in the forests of Central Oregon. 5 stars

Feel the Fire takes a different tack in this collection. Rather than smoke jumpers teaming up, Albert presents two management level fire fighting experts as the focus of the story, albeit one with a twenty year backstory. Analyst Luis is lent to the team in Oregon by his Angeles base. Initially dreading reacquainting with Tucker, he soon begins blending into his family of twin boys, ex-wife and her husband and their young daughter. The leads from both of the previous books get cameos. The use of graduating seniors Wade and Walker's post high school planning plays well into their father's analysis of possible career change. While a slower moving plot, the use arson investigation keeps it interesting. Tucker's demisexual status introduced a slower and more mature level of passion, no monkey sex. 4.5 stars

My only general suggestion would be to clean up the physical content to eliminate the duplicating promotional and marketing filler at the end of each novel.

3.5 read on average. For me, the 1st was 3 stars, the 2nd was 4 stars, and the 3rd was 3.5 stars. I absolutely love bundles. I don't understand why more authors don't do it a year or 2 after completing a series. I think my largest issue was the marketing was somewhat misleading. If you tell me it's going to be like Chicago Fire, well then, I expect a lot more action and certainly more fighting fires. The first one was predominantly about training. It was all relationship with one major action fire. The 2nd,which was actually my favorite, still had no action and Zero fighting fires or action scenes. But, it was written beautifully about going on even after severe permanent injuries and finding a new dream. The 3rd, again, had very little action. It was mostly about the relationship. The closest we got to fires was the investigative side and not a lot about that. It did have a great message about "Thinking out of the box" and finding the middle ground wherever possible.

Now, do I mind relationship centered stories? Absolutely not. But, I would have enjoyed these more if I hadn't expected "Chicago Fire's" ton of action with danger along with the relationship drama.

The stories were well researched. Described as such that I could picture it all. The writing was engaging, and I loved all 3 m/c's. They were very different stories with very different main characters and life challenges. I thought the sex scenes were particularly hot in the 2nd book. They're plenty of them in all 3 books. It may be a little heavy in arc scenes for some, but that just depends on mood or preference.

This trio of stories all utilize the same premise of fire-fighting for the Forest Service - Sky Jumpers, Hot Shot ground crews, fire specialists - all working together to battle forest fires in the fictional area of Painter's Ridge, Oregon. The books center around a group of men from one specific locale and their interactions with each other. The stories were well-researched for the technicality of the occupations and the geographical references and written clearly without flowery language and unnecessary verbosity. I noticed very few grammatical errors but the author does like to write in incomplete sentences and utilize sentence fragments as opposed to writing out a completed sentence. While the reader may understand the intent of the author, it's sometimes jarring for the reader and the technical aspects of good writing fall by the wayside. Still, the stories are engaging with likable characters. I did feel that the development of the storylines often took a backseat to sex scenes much of the time. (Gotta get those sex scenes in there or the book won't sell!) There's a lot of hand-wringing and passive-aggressiveness displayed by the main characters in each of the stories, but all come to a satisfying HEA conclusion.

This is a beautiful collection of books about how life is about making choices that make you happy and taking chances on love even when that choice might not be option others want you to make.
