From the Fire Within

What would you do if the most powerful person in the world were trying to kill the person you needed most? They say that every Watcher will face the night when they meet someone on the road who they can’t bring themselves to leave behind. Finn never believed that it could happen to him, until the day he meets Lara – a young woman who is hunted, framed for murder, and burdened with the task of saving a kingdom that hates her from its murderous ruler.

We stood there in silence for a moment. She lifted her hand, and just before she cursed me, the image of the people I loved the most flashed before my eyes. This was it. I knew the end was coming.

About the author

L.K. Rydén

1 book1 follower
L.K. Rydén is a librarian, an advocate for people with mental health issues, and a bookworm of the tallest order. Spending most of her childhood and teenage years with her head stuck in a book, her obsession with stories eventually resulted in the 2021 release of her debut YA novel From the Fire Within, a story of war, love, magic, and the struggle of having to protect everyone else from one of the people you love the most – no matter the consequences.

Having bipolar disorder and ADHD, L.K. became an advocate for people with mental health issues at the young age of fifteen, going on to speak publically about the needs of herself and her community, as well as supporting people with mental health issues in their daily struggle. Today, she is working on her latest projects within her advocacy, writing too many books at the same time, and thinking about taking up weaving – in addition to music, photography, gardening, horseback riding, interior design, and every random creative project that pops into her head – making sure she stays true to her inability to only do one thing at a time.

As much of the time as possible, you’ll find L.K. with friends and family, preferably chasing her 1.5 year old nephew to his heart’s content. If you can’t find her, it probably means she took a walk in the forest without having her morning dose of caffeine first. But don’t worry – the last few times, she found her way out after an hour or two.

The cover spoke to me first as I saw the small icon on Amazon, and paired with the title it made me wonder what it could be about. I bought the book and I wasn't disappointed.

Lara and Finn take on a journey that will either save or kill them and everyone they love.
As readers, we embark on this journey along with them. We are reading not only the perspective of the main characters but some times the antagonist as well. This insight provides us with a deeper understanding of the minds behind the actions, and it has us wondering and wanting more of the puzzle pieces.

The author makes the characters relatable as they are driven and plagued by the understandable human rises and falls. Rydén also gives us a pretty true to life taste of what it can be like to live with illness, of both body and mind. The burden that can break your back in your attempt to spare everyone else from bearing it with you, even if that means you have to hurt them to keep them safe. It's a double-edged sword that is well-portrayed here. They are all relatable on some level or other, and at times you're not sure who you're rooting for more. It definitely makes you invested in their stories.
The pages may run dark with sorrow, terror and (at times tangibly frustrating) mystery many times in the book - but it's a sobering thing to not invariably have sunshine and rainbows when it's more realistic to have thunderstorms and blizzards.

Not to say there isn't sunshine and rainbows, laughter and beauty in this story - the book is full of funny bits and sweetness, placed just right for the dynamic waves of the story. It creates a balance, yet you're on the edge of your seat wanting to turn the page to find out if something will take a turn for the worse. A quality which I appreciated, as it kept me alert while reading and pondering when not.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and can't wait to find out where their journey takes them next.

Having taken a small part in the making of this book (as illustrator), I might be biased. Yet I still have to say that I loved reading it! I hope you (whoever is reading this) will too.

I really felt that the characters had depth and were well planned; the journey they took gave me a hard time putting down the book to go get more coffee.

It was a joy to work with L.K. Rydén behind the scenes and it was a thrill to get to read it as a published book! I'm proud to have my name in this fantastical literary work, and I hope to collaborate again!

All the best and happy reading,
S.Schelin
