This book is part erotica, part historical mystery/romance maybe? In my opinion, it would be better to be just one or the other. From an erotica point of view, it's deliciously depraved. Hot and steamy and dirty but considering what kind of erotica I usually read, it was almost mild in comparison. I definitely wouldn't mind for the next part to go dirtier. As from a historical sth point of view, it has a very interesting storyline - a courtesan blackmailing her wealthy clients to gather money for freeing plantation slaves. I mean, highly intriguing. However, I think that characters were not formed all that well. I don't necessarily need likable characters for reading erotica (especially when reading it purely for filthy sex scenes) but if I want to get invested in the story, then I need characters to care for and this didn't happen here. Maybe because this is only (rather short) part one of the series (?) and there will be some more development in the next installments.

Currently free on Kindle CA store. Went browsing online last night and stumbled across this work. Group stuff isn't something that I've seen too often in historical erotica romances, even in the more explicit ones, which tend to focus on threesomes, BDSM, or voyeurism, if they are more adventurous (Golden Angel, Annabel Joseph, Kate Pearce). This has been on my kindle for AGES. Glad I finally got to it. Very interesting choice of time period and situation.
This is a Captor Captive romance. And is dark and involves dubcon and some non con. And cohesive situations, so be warned!
I will be continuing very soon as I need to know how this can work out. Haha!

This story was set at the time when some people realised how wrong slavery was and decided to do something to stop it. Georgette Bailey was a courtesan but she was also working to raise funds for the abolitionists. She has what could be a damaging journal, if it was made known, to some wealthy members of society. Interestingly, the men all blamed the woman for their indiscretions. Snippets of Georgette’s background are told which explains her feelings on the subject. Georgette is no shrinking violet and will do whatever is necessary to aid her cause. Colonel Bartholomew Hensley is in Liverpool, where this story is set, and has been asked to help an old family friend. This brings him into contact with Georgette and although there is an attraction, not all their interactions are pleasant. Bartholomew has some past regrets that he finds difficult to forget. This is part 1 of the story and I look forward to reading how it all pans out. This was an engaging read, set at a possible beginning of change of outlook. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Problematic but has some good scenes
As other reviews have noted, there is rape and coercion from the start with this book. It also uses the campaign to abolish slavery as a framing device which causes several scenes to come across as "white saviour", not to mention that it's possible to draw parallels between the submissive character's treatment and that of enslaved people (though that is not done explicitly)
There are some interesting sex scenes and descriptions. I do find the main female character - Miss Bailey, the courtesan, to be interesting but the officer seems quite two dimensional and his choice to go straight to sexual violence to reach his goals makes him difficult to connect with.

Georgette and Bartholomew are as wicked and wonton as two people could be in this sensually charged erotic story. I liked that the writer provided information on an issues of abolition that impacted the precious souls that were forced into a hateful world of evil and cruelty. I was very impressed that the writer chose two people, Georgette and Bartholomew to champion for these souls. I found the terminology of some words very impactful to these times back then, I think that the story did great by providing the reader with entertainment. I found the story has as much realistic events that had me drawn to the story.
As far as the steam level, this books ranks very high on that scale. I liked the so called flirting that Georgette and Bartholomew gave into at every opportunity that they had. I enjoyed the fast pace of the book and how easy that it was to read.

Wow!
I enjoy reading EM Brown’s work and this was no different. The promise of a dark, erotic story with dominant characters was delivered. Georgette, a courtesan, blackmails rich, powerful slave owners to aid the abolition cause. Her weapon against the men is her use of a journal, which could ruin these men. An army Colonel, Hensley, is charged with retrieving the journal no matter how. Georgette and the Colonel begin a battle of wills pushing against each other amidst passion and desire. I liked the use of flashbacks showing how Georgette ended up in her predicament. The action never slowed, the plot moved right along. Definitely dark and erotic. The cliffhanger will leave you panting for more!

This story goes back and forth in time which I would have liked a direct timeline. I really liked Georgette in that she was not just a courtesan but was also a person who cared about people and not just a talker but a doer. I also liked Bartholomew who was not goaded into his actions but carefully studied them. The backdrop was an interesting one. It is right after the American Revolution and about slavery and abolition. I think Em is a good storyteller and not just a writer of erotica. Yes, there is that in the story but I think it could have been toned down to focus more on the story. Not that I am poo-pooing it, I just liked the story so much more.

One thing that I enjoy about these books from Ms. Brown is that she enables readers to get swept up in the decadence of times past. Georgette is a stunning woman who is determined to get what she wants and is not above using her female wiles to get it. However, when she crosses paths with Colonel Bartholomew, she realizes that she may have bitten off more than she can chew as it seems as if he is her match. The two have what can only be termed a complicated relationship. Although it ends in a cliffhanger, it is one engaging storyline and I cannot wait to see what happens. I volunteered to read a copy of this book.

He’s been asked to procure a journal from Georgette, by any means! Read about Georgette & Bartholomew and the fancy foot work they use to get under each other’s skin! This is a story that will grab your attention from page one till the last page! Lots of emotions and plenty of toe curling situations!! There is a second part that needs to be read, to find out if Bartholomew gets the journal!! It’s a definite read!!

This is not for the faint of heart. I thought the writing was excellent but had difficulty jumping right into the deep end so quickly, at first anyway. After reading more I understood the backstory more and really got into the book. The level of history and attention to detail here is astounding. I couldn’t stop reading and was captured by the lessons and wit in here. An abrupt ending will have me back for seconds.

What a great start to a new series! I really enjoyed the historical aspect with relevant issues of the times driving the plot. When the first few chapters alternated between present and a month in the future, I was a bit confused. It definitely grabbed my attention and pressed me to read on. As the story continued unfold and we learn more about Georgette and Bart it all made more sense. The erotic aspects presented fit so well with the characters and overall situation, I can’t wait to see what happens next!

An enjoyable erotic tale of love,lust, and Submission. Geogette is a Courtesan who has several admission of high profile men. She blackmail them by using her beautiful looks. Colonel Bartholomew is task to get those admission. He will have a fun time getting her to yield. Can't wait to read more from this series.

First I must say this is not a full novel. CLIFFHANGER! I loved the premise of the book connecting. Not just focusing on sex but connecting it to a cause. I'm not a fan of the forced sex scenes. Beware. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

If you like degrading, submissively descriptions. Then you will enjoy this novel.
The author has a lot of content, detailed, & descriptive.
I cannot enjoy this much degrading of a woman. I will not be reading part two. To have a HEA for being caged, shamed. I don't believe in blackmail from the stem of where this story started.

Very Sensual
This is an interesting read. The storyline is engaging and the characters are very well written. It has a great deal of sexually explicit material so I wouldn't recommend it if you find that type of thing offensive. Also, be aware that this is only the first part of two volumes.

Miss Bailey is using money blackmailed from slave holders to give to abolitionists. Her journal describes intimate details that many would not want to come to light. Colonel Hensley is charged with eliminating this problem by a friend of his father's. Will he succumb to the courtesan's treachery ?

Georgette is tough woman who's down for a good cause and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals. She meets Bart and their relationship is complicated to say the least. This was good read and I really enjoyed it. Can't wait for part 2.

This book is not for everyone. I loved it. The topic of the story is very relevant. The sex scenes are sizzling hot. Very unexpected for an Heroine but Miss Bailey is no ordinary Courtesan. Let's bring part 2.

First book to be read by the author Em Brown. Not too sure what to make of this. I like Miss Bailey and her motive throughout the book. I do like the little moments between Miss Bailey and Colonel Hensley. However I'm not feeling the story as a whole.

All the potential in the world, the developing storyline was interesting and had the makes of a wonderful novel; however, I never could become engaged with my attention fully invested. I will definitely have to give this story another try later on.

Historical is usually not my go to for reading but Em Brown's books are fantastic. I absolutely love reading her words and it grabs my attention.
