**

Years ago, Silas left the spotlight of Nashville. He abandoned headlining sold-out shows and the drugs that fueled his rock star lifestyle. He’s still an addict, still scarred by the death that almost caused his descent into madness, but he’s pushing the pain into a life of helping others.

And it’s keeping him sane. Lonely, but sober. He doesn’t want to love. He can’t open the door to that kind of hurt again… Then he meets Anna.

#

Anna’s run away from all the pain—the dead father, the mother who didn't love her enough, and the stepfather who stole every ounce of innocence from her. She has a plan for a better life. A plan to forget.

Yet, there’s a constant reminder of the past that’s always with Anna and her heart keeps telling her that there’s more than just her future at stake now. She can’t falter. She has to stay focused, study hard, and keep her guard up against danger.

Then she meets a handsome EMT by chance and her walls start breaking down.

Silas and Anna can find a sanctuary together or keep their hearts closed. Safe, yet never whole. But there are dangers that threaten and memories that burn.

Heart Notes is a bittersweet, coming-of-freedom romance between a broken rock star and a runaway.

Trigger warning- this story contains material that some readers might find disturbing. Expect references to sexual assault, language, and instances of violence.

Heart Notes is a book that touches upon several topics that are hard hitting and this element is what drew me to the story. A broken Hero crossing paths with a broken heroine and their journey begins to heal them both.

Silas is an EMT after giving up his career as a successful musician, after a heart breaking loss to addiction helped him make the decision to seek sobriety for himself. Silas is a man constantly battling his demons especially in the moments of calm when he feels most alone. Anna the heroine has her own demons and is running from them the only way she knows how. Moving across the country to put herself through college while trying to come to terms with everything that has been taken from her and how life is changing she is a lost soul trying to make the best of what she has.

What I loved about this book was the confidence in which the Author tackled the issues featured in the book. She didn't shy away from them she embraced them as a part of who these characters are and how they form both strengths and weaknesses. There were some great secondary characters in the story - Tanner, Laurie and Nat who added a great support network and depth to the story. Towards the end of the book an element of suspense was brought in and kept me guessing about how things were going to play out.

Now I found my interest waning as I read the book, I didn't feel that innate connection between the characters that I wanted. I would have liked to spend a little more time on Silas and Anna separately at the start of the novel to really understand them before switching between character perspectives. The bones are all there for an amazing novel in Heart Notes. The pacing seemed slow, like not much was happening but I think that was because I didn't feel that pull to the characters. For me the book was missing a little depth, the emotional turmoil each character felt was there it just needed exploring more individually. As a couple it felt very one sided with Silas helping Anna, I would have loved to see how she was helping him. Yes this was expressed with her discussion with Tanner but it would be nice to see this side of the relationship between Anna and Silas themselves.

I wanted to love this book so much because it has all the parts there for an angsty, emotional rollercoaster of a book but unfortunately it just missed the mark for me. I did enjoy Ellie's writing style however and look forward to reading more of her work.
