Bread is supposed to be the staff of life—not a murder weapon.
Every baker has their weak spot. For Poppy it’s bread. So, when The Great British Baking Contest hits bread week, she’s as fragile as an overbaked croissant. Just when she needs to keep all her focus on flour, water, yeast and salt, another ingredient enters the mix. Death.
Someone is not who they appear to be, and secrets from the past are bringing deadly consequences to the present. Poppy isn’t only a contestant in the long-running TV show, she’s also a witch and reluctant amateur sleuth. With the rest of her coven, assorted animal helpers and her ghostly sidekick Gerry, Poppy needs to solve the murder before someone else dies.
Set in the beautiful Somerset countryside, the Great Witches Baking Contest stories are all linked, but they can be read as stand alone cozy mysteries. There is no swearing, gore or sex. Just an entertaining cozy mystery with witches, ghosts, a little romance–and recipes!

I'm having a hard time writing this review as I don't want to give away any spoilers for those reading this series, but it's definitely the best book in the series so far and I am soooooo excited as it appears the author is working on a way to have the series continue past the competition in the book. The narrator does such a superior job of making you feel like the characters are living breathing people and that you are right there with them. I absolutely can not wait to listen to the next book in the series!!! I absolutely love Poppy, the main character, and can not wait to see what happens next for her!!!!! (I think I have exceeded my yearly quota of exclamation points, but seriously if you like a good paranormal cozy mystery then you need to start listening to the series just so you can get to this book!)
Crumbs and Misdemeanors is Book 6 in The Great Witches Baking Show by Nancy Warren.
Oh how I LOVE this series. This book was spectacular. Its bread week and Poppy is a ball of nerves because that is her weak spot.
Competition is getting fierce as they get closer to the end of the Baking Show. When an employee at the Inn that all the contestants are staying at turns up murdered, Poppy is investigating.
This book had me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I have grown to love the characters that are complex and well defined.
There are several different story lines that are perfectly weaved together for a wonderful and exciting reading experience.
The author's talent always blows me away. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
Well we're getting closer...! Soon (hopefully) Poppy will uncover the secret behind her parents. I'm a big fan of how Nancy Warren gets Poppy to stay on (not saying any more because of spoilers lol).
The audio version of Crumbs and Misdemeanors is nicely performed by Hollis McCarthy.
3.75 rounded up This was delightful. I loved the ghostly presence as well as the bread baking challenge. This is a slow build of a series for me but I quite enjoyed this installment.
"What use was being a witch if you couldn’t use magic to help a friend in danger?"
In the 6th of the series, with only a handful of bakers left, Poppy's task for the week is bread; not her forte by her own admission. Add to that the search for her birth parents records, her dwindling bank account and her dabbling in sleuthing and what's a nascent witch to do?
Her friend Eve has connected her with Eloise, the new baker at the Inn. That baker is a whiz at everything Poppy needs to know and a crash course in grains and yeast makes her head spin. Later on that evening Poppy discovers another body in the pantry and besides freaking her out, it gives her another clueless situation. Who was it and who did it? Another recipe for disaster.
And now one of her contestant family may be in danger as well! Can Poppy figure out who the perp is before others are in danger?
Nancy Warren can both make you laugh and make you think in almost the same breath. Each of these books, almost every one of her books no matter what the series or topic is both informative and entertaining and leaves you hungry for more. Highly Recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book as a gift from the author and voluntarily read and reviewed it]
This is the sixth book in the Great Witches Baking Show by Nancy Warren.
This is the week Poppy has been dreading. Bread week. Everyone has something baking-wise that is their kryptonite. Bread is Poppy’s. She is getting help from Eloise in the kitchen to boost her bread baking confidence. Then Poppy wants to come back after dinner to get more help and finds poor Eloise dead in the pantry. Does she have the worst luck or what?
I enjoy this series so much that i wonder if it can continue even after the baking show is over. I would totally love that so much!
There are a couple of contestants on the show that I don’t want to see leave and am dreading when that particular cooking week comes around. The Scottish Detective, Hamish, is one of my favs and want him to continue with the series if it ever morphs into something else after the backing sho ends.
I am hooked on this series! Already looking into Warren’s other two series, Vampire Knitting Club and Vampire Book Club.
Definitely pick this up if you are a magical cozy mystery lover.
This was another fun entry in the author's Great Witches Baking Show series. With this entry it's now down to just five contestants in the Baking Show, and it's bread week, Poppy's true weakness as a baker. Of course, along with the baking we get a mysterious death. And of course Poppy once more investigates. I enjoyed the mystery and the cooking parts of the book, and the ending definitely surprised me. I did not see it coming!
Loved this! I have to limit comments to being a fantastic tale of murder mixed with, just a pinch, of witchcraft wrapped up in well rounded narrative to. It’s a must and I can’t say more for fear of spoiling this for the rest of you
An intriguing story as always. All Poppy wants is to win the baking contest. Unfortunately a murder gets in the way. How will this all turn out. Suspenseful to the end.
This book took me by surprise. It has twists and turns I clearly was not expecting, but it did disappoint me in some ways. I fear there might be some mysteries in this series that might not be solved by the end of the series. This is honestly a series that grows. While I do remember the beginning being slow and tedious, as the story progresses they become more and more addicting. And the contest is becoming more stressful as well. It's bread week and honestly, making bread scares me as well. While I do like making cakes and cupcakes, the thought of making bread stresses me out, which is why I can definitely relate to Poppy in this one. At the same time, the search for her parents continues. I am hoping it will take center stage in the next books. This chapter in her life is the one I am most curious about, honestly. Nancy Warren's writing is so clear and fluid, you cannot believe how the chapters just turn and turn. Even though I was hesitant about the narrator, Hollis McCarthy, she does grow and you and soon you cannot picture anyone else for Poppy's voice. I am so happy I found out about Nancy Warren and her cozy paranormal mystery novels. The stories are addicting and you find yourself rooting for her characters in each book.
It's bread week and Poppy is anything but happy about it. She's very nervous, as bread has always given her trouble. The baker at the inn offers to help her, but then tragedy strikes. Poppy once again helps solve a murder and the ending of this book just may surprise readers. I'm very excited to read the next book!
CRUMBS AND MISDEMEANORS is a standalone read within a series with a happy ending. There are no sexy scenes or inappropriate language so any age can read and enjoy. Young teens to grannies will enjoy the read. It is within a series but you do not have to read the other books as this is an episode that stands alone. It is a cozy mystery so there is of course a murder. However it is not one that will cause nightmares and there is the mystery of WHO DONE IT? So it is a fun read to enjoy.
Poppy a water witch and baker is preparing for the 6th filming of The Great British Baking Contest. Only the best bakers remain so the competition is getting stiff. Poppy is nervous. This week it is bread and bread is not her friend. She has been practicing like crazy and yet she cannot come up with the perfect loaf that is tasty as well as pretty. Poppy is still under the threats that her life is in danger and she needs to leave forever. She has no intentions of leaving so she wears the protection spell from her sister witches. Still, she is in danger.
Needing help Poppy asks her friend in charge of the Inn's kitchen if she has any ideas. Her friend says she will have their award winning baker, Eloise, come in early to help out. Eloise gives her some good tips and offers to help her after the first day of filming. So, it is off to the tent for the first day of filming. Everyone is ready, the cameras are up and running and suddenly Poppy feels a huge push of energy knocking her backwards, at that moment a big light from the ceiling falls and hits right where Poppy was standing. She would have surly been killed had she not been pushed out of the way. But there is no one standing there. How did she get pushed back?
Filming proceeds. After the first half of the show they break for lunch. So far Poppy is holding her own but who knows with bread? Poppy's main goal in coming to Broomwode is to find information about her birth parents. Left in a box in front of a bakery, Poppy's only clue was a knitted scarf left in the box that perfectly matches the shawl on a lady in a painting in Broomwode Manor. Set with a list of clues Poppy is still determined to find out who her parents are and if they are still alive. And what is the connection to the big hawk that flies in the area and seems to be following her? Later that evening Poppy runs down to the kitchens to check with Eloise on the ingredients she needs for the next day. However, the kitchens are dark and there is no one around. Poppy along with Gerry, the resident ghost, decides to check out the kitchen herself. She sees feet sticking out of the doorway and knows she has discovered another murder.
This is a fun read for any age. There is mystery, suspense, a bit of mild flirting, witchcraft-of a good nature, a friendly ghost and just lots of fun. I definitely recommend it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 3/9/2021
CRUMBS AND MISDEMEANORS by Nancy Warren The Sixth Great Witches Baking Show Mystery
It's bread week and amateur baker Poppy Wilkinson is nervous. While humans have been baking bread for eons and it should be a fairly simple task, Poppy just can't seem to make a decent loaf. Eloise, the new baker at the pub has offered to give Poppy some tips, but when Poppy ventures into the kitchen one night, she finds the young baker dead. Although she knows she needs to keep her mind on bread, Poppy finds herself looking into Eloise's life. Will Poppy discover the truth about the young woman? Will she be able to bake a loaf of bread good enough to keep her in the competition? Or will bread week be the end of Poppy?
I love bread, from crisp sourdough to a simple baguette with butter. Watching Paul Hollywood and the Great British Bake off, however, I realize how much of a challenge making it is-even though baking bread used to be a common household chore. It's not surprising that this is the week that Poppy struggles. I wondered how she would remain in the competition if she didn't improve. I mean, how could she get booted off when she had so much more to learn about her family?
The combination of baking mixed with character development proves a heady mix. I love how not only the bakers interact, but coven members too. They're both family! And the concept of family is such an integral component of this series. There's more, too. People are not always who they seem and secrets abound. These themes are at the core of the sixth Great Witches Baking Show mystery.
A touch of the paranormal and an intriguing mystery encased in a delightful nod to a well loved baking show make CRUMBS AND MISDEMEANORS fantastic read.
.. to keep up with the competition and this week is Poppy's biggest worry but Eve arranges a lesson for her with Eloise the inn's baker and pastry chef. Poppy does her best but still has so much to learn and her woes are not aided by Eve's tarot reading when she draws death and then the inverted wheel of fortune.
It all feels too much when a lighting rig almost crushes her within minutes of the first challenge starting and she's all a jitter trying to figure out if it was accidental or intentional. Having scraped herself together and got through day one she nods off while waiting to meet Eloise, to collect some yeast, after the dinner rush. Hoping that it's been left out for her to collect she heads through the silent inn only to find a body in the pantry.
Can she save herself with her showstopper bake or is it curtains for Poppy this week? And can she work out just who Eloise really is when it appears that she's been using a fake name? Better still can she work out who the killer is and prevent anyone else from facing death? Once again she's had little time to research into her birth family but will Eve find a solution to help her?
Oh boy! This one is another good one guys! I must say this series has become one of my top favorite series!
It’s not just the characters or the theme that I enjoy so much but also de story within the story and how with each book you see it grow into this wel orchestrated in-depth story!
I can say in all honesty that this series is highly addictive!!! Because you’ll just want to know and find out as much as Poppy does, the answers to her personal mystery and most of all which destiny lays ahead of Poppy, because I am getting a strong feeling that there is even more to Poppy we still have to find out yet!
And so with this I also have to confess that in the same time you will not want to find out everything, because then comes the realization that finding everything out about the lovely Poppy will mean that it will probably be all over and that the series I came to enjoy so much will eventually come to an end! But hey, don’t worry we can still read it all over again or who knows with what new fabulous books and series Nancy Warren will come up again!
Crumbs and Misdemeanors (Great Witches Baking Show #6) by Nancy Warren Publisher: Ambleside Publishing Genre: Cozy Culinary Mystery, Witch & Wizard Mysteries, Paranormal Cozy Mystery Release Date: March 17, 2021
Crumbs and Misdemeanors is the sixth book in the Great Witches Baking Show series by Nancy Warren and is my favorite (so far!). This can be read as a standalone book, but the series is so good you should read them all!
This book has it all! A great storyline, relatable characters, a fun baking show, witches, ghosts, and a whodunit murder mystery!
The mystery in this book was great and kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who the killer was! This is such a fun book filled with suspense and humor. I found myself racing through this book and had to slow down so I wouldn't miss out on any of the goodness! This is one of those books you won't want to put down once you start reading!
This is a great cozy mystery and would recommend it to all cozy readers!
I received this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Crumbs and Misdemeanors by Nancy Warren The Great Witches Baking Show Series Book Six Poppy Wilkinson is in the sixth week of The Great British Baking Contest. And it’s not looking good. It’s bread week, and even after practicing all week…it’s been hit and miss. Bread and Poppy do not get along well, even to the point that Poppy’s avoiding eating any of the sandwiches! Thankfully, Eve has set it up for Poppy to come early on Friday and learn a few tricks from the new pastry chef at Broomewode Inn, Eloise. Hopefully, one day can give her enough tips to get through this weekend. Although, with only five contestants left, all of who Poppy feels close to, it’s tough to think of anyone being voted off. Just when Poppy really needs her head in the game, a few things happen that have her very distracted. Another excellent addition to this series as Poppy bakes her heart out in the contest, searches for her information on her birth parents, and is learning about being a water witch. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Still such a cute series. Who knew that baking shows were so dangerous, baking up murder as well as bread? That is exactly what happens in Crumbs and Misdemeanors (Great Witches Baking Show #6) by Nancy Warren. This was an excellent story of Poppy and her friends. There is baking, mystery and murder all rolled in a tightly woven plot.
I am going to admit about half-way through or a little more I feared that Crumbs and Misdemeanors may be the last of the series. Happily, since all questions concerning Poppy’s family has not been answered, it all worked out in the end. This is great since this is a series that grows better with each book. Or perhaps it because I am feeling more and more grandmotherly towards Poppy just like Maggie seems to be doing. Still the conclusion was a surprised, wonderfully unexpected.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another weekend at the Great British Baking contest that’s gearing up with all the contestants ready to keep us on our toes. Poppy is insecure about her breadmaking skills and guess what this is bread week. Bread is unforgiving when you mess up and was Poppy ever messed up. She enlists the help of the Inn’s baker Eloise to give her a crash course . But Poppy soon realizes that flour , yeast and murder do not mix.
You can read this as a stand alone but it is best to read the whole series to get a feel for the characters and the countryside. In no time it will seem that you are right there in the thick of things and can actually smell the grass and awesome smells coming from the ovens! It was an entertaining fun read and I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what was next! And as an added bonus there is a recipe at the back of the book from the baking competition!
Another entertaining book in the series. Things are definitely heating up in the tent as the pressure increases and temperatures are rising. Who will go home this week? Bread is not something Poppy is good at making so she is sure this will be her last week in the competition. A baker who was giving Poppy tips on bread baking ends up dead. Turns out she had a lot of secrets but who would want her dead? There are several suspects. Once again, the bakers help Poppy determine whodunit. I didn't have this murder figured out as quickly as I have the others but I did figure it out before it was revealed. Poppy is not having much luck figuring out who her birth parents are but she may have a lead that can help her. I really wish she would find some clues as to their identities. It's getting stale at this point in the series. Does Poppy have an admirer? It certainly looks that way. I hope she does because she could use something nice happening in her life.
Poppy Wilkinson is still a competitor on the Great British Baking Show, but she's not sure that she will survive Bread Week. No matter how hard she tries, she just can't seem to consistently bake a decent bread.
As if that wasn't enough, she is nearly killed when a large light falls above her baking station on the first day. If it wasn't for her ghostly guardian, Gerry, she might be flatter than a pancake! When she stumbles upon yet another dead body, Poppy isn't sure if she should focus on Baking Poppy or Detective Poppy!
This is another entertaining addition to this series and the author has created a great group of characters. I enjoy the baking aspect to these books and the magical atmosphere that seems to surround Broomwode Hall. I look forward to continuing this series and hope that Poppy will soon prevail in her quest to find information about her birth parents.
Because of the availability at Libby, I am reading this series out of order. After the fun of GingerDead, I found book 6. I dislike reading things out of order, but I figured Nancy Warren does such a nice job of filling in the needed details from the previous books. I didn't feel I'd get lost. And I don't think I did.
This book went nearly as fast as the Gingerdead novella. It was a fun ride.
Hollis McCarthy narrated this one, also. She could voice all the characters so well that I often forgot it was just one woman reading aloud.
Nancy Warren's series are all so light and cozy, yet engaging. I don't like that mysteries are always about murder. But everything else is fun. It's always an adventure.
It was one of those sleepless nights, so I not only finished this one, but I went on to the other one Libby had available. Again, way out of order. On to number 5!
Okay, maybe I’m being a little hard on the author, I AM still reading, after all. I felt like this was a little more interesting and it was more like 2.5-stars.
I find it very hard to believe that Poppy was able to figure out who Eloise was in 15-min but she can’t find Valerie? Don’t most churches and local estates keep really good records of their births, deaths, and all of that? Why hasn’t she gone there?
Florence was painted a lot more harshly here than in previous books, and she seems to be a little catty and jealous of Poppy? The weird internal ramblings need to stop and some of them are becoming repetitive. I realize the author wrote these to be standalone, but I’m not sure how really.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is my new favorite in the Great Witches Baking Show series. CRUMBS AND MISDEMEANORS turns Bread Week, Poppy's biggest challenge yet, into a delightful mystery! I thoroughly enjoyed how much this book in the series emphasized the difficulties of baking perfect bread and really felt for Poppy as she struggled to get it right. And the murder fit in perfectly with the challenges of Bread Week on the show. It was also a treat to spend time with all of our favorite bakers, witches, community members and resident ghost. Learning more about all of these characters in each book is half the fun of this series.
3.5-3.7 stars. Poppy is having a really bad day. Bread is just not her forte and it shows as she struggles through Bread week on competition. A baker who was helping Poppy learn everything there is to know about bread is found dead, by, you guessed it- Poppy!! Now it’s time to solve that mystery. As with the other books in the series, this book was quick, clean, and pretty surface level. Not much is done in the search for Poppy’s parents though I guess the search may ramp up as the series progress. Benedict is hanging around more, the remaining contestants are pretty involved in helping solve the mysteries, so the big change this book brings will be interesting.
💕 Positives: * Cozy setting with lovable characters.
* The mystery was tricky and I didn't solve it. Still fun to read about.
🚫 Negatives: * No major progress on the birth parent mystery. It's starting to feel like the reader is getting strung along.
⚡Trigger Warning: None
🌟 Overall, this book was much better than the previous one. Poppy seemed back to normal self, the mystery was fun to solve and watching the baking competition was fun. I'm looking forward to the next book in Poppy's saga.
