On the island resort of Hilton Head in the South Carolina Lowcountry, siblings Dante and Grace face unimaginable horror. A highly contagious virus is rapidly spreading throughout the area, turning the recently deceased into fast moving zombies. Faced with threats from both the living and the undead, they are forced to join forces with others in a desperate bid for survival.
Dead America - Lowcountry is an ongoing standalone series set within the massive Dead America universe.
So as per usual the books in this series are filled with gore and zombie action. The gore is creative and the situations are engaging. There really wasn't a lot of character development so I didn't really vibe with any of them on a noticeable level also I listened to this one and the narrator has a great voice but the story takes place in South Carolina and he has a British sort of accent and when he voices the locals they come out sounding Australian so that was weird. Also the author really has a thing in all of his stories for football tackling the zombies and pitching them off or onto things
Dead America: Lowcountry (#1), Dead Texas / Dead America Universe (#48)
As the zombie apocalypse begins this book tells of the events in South Carolina. Dante and Grace are brother and sister who are visiting S.C., from Seattle, for the 'non-zombie' death of their grandmother. They go to a supercenter store for supplies where they are greeted by a major commotion. It seem a homeless person has attacked a customer. As the two go about their shopping they meet up with Bailey. Bailey is an employee who ends up having a run in with an obnoxious customer, Troy. Next thing you know all hell breaks out. It is the beginning. As the foursome run for cover the find two other people and bring them along. As they attempt to escape the supercenter they lose one of the group.
At Troy suggestion they head for Hilton Head Island. Theo Atkinson, head of the QXR Group, will be there and have the Island secure. Troy was right. Grace and Dante realize that the group manning the Island really not really the welcoming type. June, who was one they saved at the supercenter has a cough and type A+ blood. She gets shot on sight. Grace kills the guy. Dante and Bailey escapes the group leaving behind Grace and Troy. Dante runs into a group of hotel employees, Lily, Philip and Cam, who escaped HHI with some of the guests. They five of them join up together leaving behind the guests who don't want to be told what to do. They end up at Lilys' cousins Ace house. There they plot the rescue of Baileys' family, someone trapped at a news station, and Grace. Will they be able to save anyone?
Can you say hillybilly town: Lilys' description talking about the town Ace lives in "the gas station, slash restaurant, slash emergency clinic....a toothless, 60-year-oldman named Gator, who gives you a shot of whiskey and a Band-Aid, If you're pretty, he'll even give your boo-boo a kiss."
Ace meeting Dante exchange is priceless. That alone makes the story worth the read.
As usual Derek Slaton's Dead America series does not disappoint. There is always lots of action and zombies to keep things interesting. I wish they were longer because I can't get enough of them and can't wait for the next one, but as fast as he keeps writing and getting them out ... I'm good with waiting At least a little while. Don't stop and keep up the good work.
So far as zombie action goes, this book is probably 4 or 5 stars. But I found myself disliking most of the main characters. Maybe this will improve in future books, but at this point I'm not sure if I will reading further.
