Summary (from Goodreads):

Lucien Marvaine never thought he was good enough for Katherine. As the younger son of an earl, he didn't have a title or prospects. Then fate steps in and gives him a second chance, and this new Earl of Roxbury is determined to make the beautiful Kate his own . . . one touch . . . one kiss at a time.

Katherine never thought of herself as a temptress, certainly not with Lucien. Why, she's known him almost all her life! Yet as she waltzes in Lucien's arms at the Kingsborough Ball, she can't help but be drawn to him. Has he always been this hard and masculine? And where did those dimples come from? Kate is not looking for a husband . . . but how can she not surrender to Lucien's charms when love is at stake?

What I Liked:

Well. This one was not to my liking, very much. This series started brilliantly, in my opinion. The Trouble with Being a Duke was SO GOOD, a gorgeous Cinderella retelling, and I gave it four stars. The second book was The Scandal in Kissing an Heir, and that one was an okay novel, a Rapunzel retelling, garnering three stars from me. I'm not sure which tale this book is retelling, but it got two stars from me. So it would seem that the series is declining in quality, I'm afraid.

For what it's worth, I liked Lucien a lot. Lucian and Kate were friends when they were younger - they grew up together, along with Crossby, who ended up wooing Kate and marrying her, NOT Lucien. This story is not typical, because instead of Kate being in love with Lucien from the beginning, it's Lucien who has always been in love with Kate, and Kate never had a clue.

I must say, I rather hate this type of romance. See more below. So that kind of ruined the romance for me. And that's a really big part of the HISTORICAL ROMANCE novel. Also, the secondary plot was stupid.

Also, I hate widower-type books as well. When the woman's husband died, leaving her with children, or even without children, just the title. I don't know why this bothers me so much. The same goes with a widower male. Not a fan of that story, though you don't see it too often in historical romance novels. I think the only widower historical romance novel I've liked is Elizabeth Hoyt's Thief of Shadows. I loveeee Hoyt's books.

But as I mentioned before, I really, really liked Lucien. He is the reason why this book gets two stars, as a opposed to one star. I loved how much he loved Kate, how hard he worked to get her to notice him and his feelings, all of the selfish things that didn't seem selfish at all, in the name of love.

Now. Let's get to what I didn't like.

What I Did Not Like:

The romance. The secondary plot. Kate. Ugh ugh ugh. There were too many little AND big things that really weren't all that great. I really enjoyed the first book of this series. This series had a lot of promise, especially with the unique way that the author set up this series, but this book, and the previous one, to be honest, weren't that good.

I really did not like the romance. Lucien is in love with Kate. They were childhood friends. I'm not sure why I don't like it when the male is in love with the female from childhood. Personally, I'm not sure I like it when the female is in love with the male from childhood. A few years, maybe, but childhood? Ehhh, not necessarily the story I like to read. At any rate, I dislike this romance setup. Lucien is so smitten, his love for Kate never wavering, even when she married his rival (their childhood peer).

For that matter, I seriously do not like Kate. She married Crossby, who never loved her, but married her to spite Lucien. What?! Are you serious?! Did Kate herself ever love Crossby? Because it didn't seem like it. Kate had her pick of many men, including Lucien, but she chose horrible Crosby, who ended up treating her pretty terribly. I would have chosen Lucien any day.

So when you hate the romance in a ROMANCE novel, that's kind of the whole book right there. This book really had no chance, as soon as I realized how the romance was set up. Also? It was a bunch of crap, in my opinion. So much back-and-forth, indecision, stupid wavering from Kate. Lucien flirts with her, proclaims his feelings for her, drops everything for her, and that's still not good enough?! Spoiled b****. She acts so entitled and snobby, especially since she has her precious daughter (with her late husband, of course). He proposes marriage to her over and over, and she refuses. But of course, when she finally deems that she is ready, and he doesn't ask her, suddenly he doesn't love her, right?! Are you f***ing kidding me?! The man asked you to marry him HOW MANY TIMES?! Of course he's not asking at the moment, how many times can a man have his pride wounded like that!? Ugh.

Moving on to the secondary plot. Oh my gosh. It revolves around Kate, and it's so stupid. It really pops out of nowhere, and I rather dislike it a lot. It just proves to me that Lucien is an honorable, decent, love-struck gentleman, and Kate deserves to be run over by a wagon. NOT that the conflict is necessarily directly her fault, but gosh she is so dumb. There is one thing that she did that is SO DUMB - I can't say the specifics but ugh, who is that stupid?! WHO?!

I've probably said enough, right? Steer clear of this one, unfortunately. The first book in the series was amazing! Magical! Captivating! This one... not so much.

Would I Recommend It:

No, not at all, unfortunately. I'm so happy that I stuck through this series (so far), but I think I've reached my limit with the series. We'll see when the premise of the next book is released (if there is another book in the works). I would TOTALLY recommend the first book, The Trouble with Being a Duke, but not the second book or this one.

Rating:

2 stars. Lucien gets those two stars - I really like him. I had hoped for more from this book, given my immense love for the first book, but this book was even worse than the second book (not that the second book was horrible, but it wasn't great). Try the first book in this series, or Sophie Jordan's A Good Debutante's Guide To Ruin!

I had trouble connecting to this book. I didn’t find it engaging at all. Neither the romance nor the larger plot worked for me.

The hero, Lucian, has been in love with Kate since childhood. Despite the facts that he is the ostensibly attractive and charming older brother of a dear friend –and that they were inseparable in youth– she never even considered that they could one day be a match. I had trouble right here at the very beginning.

It seems everyone who has ever met these two knew about Lucien’s feelings and everyone expected them to end up together. Everyone but Kate. I didn’t buy it. Anyway… Kate married another guy while Lucien was off to war and now that she is a widow, he finally sees his chance to come home and win her heart.

Kate had a very unhappy marriage and never wants to repeat the experience. Even faced with Lucien’s clear feelings for her, she was too afraid to accept him. There was so much build-up here, I expected that she had been the object of serious abuse. But after all of the building, her backstory was terribly weak. What happened to her in her first marriage –even what prompted her to marry the guy in the first place– was so anticlimactic that I was annoyed and frustrated. It all made her character difficult to like and respect.

Lucien was a different story. What kept him from Kate made sense and I could see how bad timing and circumstance brought him to where he is. But it has been years and he jumped back in the saddle in love with a woman he’s been separated from all of this time. It strains credibility.

Meanwhile, someone is trying to kill Kate. Who and why is just stupid. I can’t think of a kinder way to say it. The motivation for all the hate behind it didn’t have enough in the story to support it. I didn’t believe it and I didn’t care anyway.

Lucien and his sassy grandmother were about the only things this book had going for it. And they are not quite enough to make it a winner in my opinion.

Returning to this series after the first book, a lovely Cinderella retelling, this story carries the feel of Emma (by Austen) and is even referenced in the story itself. Barnes weaves a familiar-feeling story with her own twists to mix things up a bit, and comes out with an enjoyable story, despite a rather troublesome heroine.

Lucien has been on the continent for a few years only to return to assume the title of Earl of Roxbury, and take up residence in England once again. His life-long friend Katherine has been the object of his desire and love for years, but she has firmly planted him in the ‘friend zone’, so leaving England was his best alternative to pining after her marriage to someone else. When he returns to find her widowed, his hopes are restored, and he sets his sights on winning her.

Katherine was a bit uptight, with an apparent remove from her own emotional responses. While she longs to regain the once-comfortable friendship with Lucien, her bad marriage experience has decided her on remaining the widow, and she isn’t sure that she can cope with the emotions Lucien fuels. She’s a bit of a pain in the arse actually, blowing hot and cold and FAR too interested in what others think about her. Fortunately for her, she has a group of friends that add levity and brightness to her, and her moments with her daughter and her desire to provide for her all give her heart that is sorely missing.

Lucien decides that wooing and seduction are in order, and he sets forth to do just that: but a thread of a threat to her life, and a shooting and shooter uncovered at the Kingsborough ball all conspire to make his job a bit more difficult, if not adding a great deal of intrigue or tension to the plot (for me). Frankly, when the threat to Katherine was unmasked, I wouldn’t have missed her if it weren’t for Lucien’s determination and insistence that she is worth his adoration.

Yes, it took several years and plenty of missteps for both characters, but Barnes manages to bring them together in a pleasant and pleasing way, and show the friends to lovers story can be all the sweeter for the time apart.

I received an eBook copy of the title from the publisher for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This was almost a DNF for me and I just skimmed the last half to the end. Lucien and Katherine were childhood friends. He apparently has been in love with her forever, and everyone but Katherine knows it. He has a fight with his parents and leaves England and she marries Lord Crossby, another neighbor. He dies shortly thereafter and Lucien comes home hoping to rekindle the relationship.

When I say everyone knows he loves her, it's made clear early in the story that the entire ton believes it yet no one bothered to tell her. Her marriage wasn't happy and she's wants to spend more time with Lucien now that he's back as friends.

Lucien seems nice in the beginning but turns into an utter ass. This is a man in his 30s, who's been to war, who was devastated when Katherine married another but has never given her a hint that he's interested in her that way. Instead of sharing his feelings with her and spending time so she can get to know him again, he immediately begins a flirtation with another woman to make her jealous. Yes, are we in middle school? Causing your love interest pain is certainly the best way to show your affection. Meantime he takes her to task every time she so much as looks at another man. Four days later he finally shows his feelings and can't believe why she won't immediately fall on her knees in gratitude. He's been gone for four years, the woman has standards. Besides, all he ever things about is getting her in bed. It got old fast.

I liked Katerine in the beginning. Her arguments with Lucien make sense. She wants to get to know him again and can't understand why he's pushing her so hard and so fast for a marriage that he knows she doesn't want. There were problems in her marriage and I waited for the big reveal, for the abuse, for the big secret and when it came I was so underwhelmed I had to walk away from the book for a bit. Yes Crossby was a jerk but outside of some initial problems and hints, there is nothing there that tells us why she came out of that marriage so timid. Despite her objections she falls into bed with him far to fast and I never understood why she fell for him at all.

Then there is this second half plot of someone trying to kill her that was simply ridiculous. Not going to waste any time on it.

The love story felt flat. I really hoped they'd give up and go their separate ways. I've read much, much better stories from this author.

This is the third book in the series from Sophie Barnes.
Lucien and Katherine grew up together, they were best friends. Lucien goes to war and when he comes home it is to his older brother dying. He is devasted and his father wants him to marry and produce an heir, but Lucien does not want anything to do with taking his beloved brothers place so he leaves immediately again for the continent and does not come back for two years, by this time he is the Earl. Katherine doesn't know why he left so suddenly and while he is away she gets married to one of their neighbors. What she doesn't know is that her husband is an opium addict. He degrades her and makes her life miserable. The only good thing that has come out of her marriage is her daughter. When her husband dies she decides to take over his management of his estate and she finds out that she is very good at it and enjoys it. She implements safer practices in her businesses that benefit her employees and their families. Little does she know that she has made an enemy who wants her dead because of the way she handles her business dealings. Lucien returns from the continent to take over the Earldom and goes to see Katherine as soon as he can. He has been in love with her since she was sixteen and he twenty three. She has changed since her marriage. She used to be confident, fearless and sure of herself. Now she seems unsure of herself and afraid. Lucien decides that he will court her and seduce her at the same time. He is going to marry her and spend his life loving her the way she deserves. He has no idea how her husband treated her, but he knows something is wrong and wants to help her overcome it so they can be happy. He also has to keep her safe and find out why she is being targeted by a underworld criminal. Sophie knows how to write a great love story. You can just feel the emotions of the two main protagonists. Her dialogue is very good and the way the story develops is truly satisfying. I loved all three of these books and cannot wait for her next one. She is now one of my Keeper authors. Received ARC for review from Adelweiss.

I was never a fan of the plot, I mean, how do you NOT realize your childhood friend is hot and a catch on the marriage mart?

This was a did-not-finish book.

(Sep) I am not sure where I came across this book - it's #3 in a series (and you know I hate to jump in in the middle!), but I figured I had it, why not. Lucien has returned home after time away, hoping to reconnect with Katherine, the girl he has always loved. Katherine is a young widow with a baby daughter. Katherine has always looked at Lucian as a friend, her dear friend's older brother. Sure, they spent a lot of time running around together when they were young, but she never saw him in "that" way. How she missed that he was desperately in love with her when everyone else either could see it or suspected it is beyond me (and I mean everyone in the Ton, from the sound of it!). Lucian decides to woo her slowly, make her aware of him as an eligible man. He succeeds, and Katherine cant' figure out why she is all of a sudden seeing him differently, but he's making her heart pitter patter. They hang out with Mr. Goodard and Lady Julie (who both have feelings for one another but keep them secret - so Mr. G is sort of using hanging out w/Kate as a way to make Lady J jealous, and Lady J and Lucian are doing the same thing). There is a part where the 4 of them are together and they decide to go for a ride - reasonable - and then go to the old ruins to play a game of hide-and-seek, which struck me as a) stupid (hide-n-seek with 4 people?!; and b) they are grown people - I mean Lucian is 30 - comes across as a bizarrely childish thing to want to do! Then...well then a bunch of stuff happens - and then more stuff - and then it ends.

This was not a well written book. The beginning was incredibly boring - a lot of smoldering looks from Lucian and confusion about her feelings (internal and mental) from Katherine. The way people spoke was odd too. Katherine's bff Louise comes to see Kate and she actually says "my brother, the duke" - now, they are close friends. Kate knows her bro is a duke. If Louise has more than one brother (not mentioned but she could) then she'd say my brother Charles (or whatever his name is)...my brother the duke sounds stuffy and formal and weird. This happens more than once, where characters speak of others as Lord or Lady whoever - when they are speaking to friends or that person is right there and would be totally fine to use their first name in that particular situation with those people. Also, once Lucian gets Kate feeling frisky and the sexing commences, he stops - because he decides he needs her to agree to marry him, something she has no interest in doing. And then when they do get down-n-dirty, he freaks out afterwards and pulls away from her and she's confused and he's confused and neither seem to know what they want or how to communicate and it just gets repetitive and weird - yes I love her but I must stay away; yes I love him but I don't know what he wants...ugh!

Now, if SB had left out the mystery, which was incredibly poorly done, and made more of the story about Kate letting go of her fears of marriage or more of Lucian's pursuit, it might have been ok, even if a little stilted in parts. But no, SB had to throw in a mystery. Someone is trying to kill Kate! Who? Well, a woman shows up and shoots her in the middle of the night. Kate knocks her out and she and her servants tie the lady up and Lucian comes over and the lady says some bad guy from London is holding her son hostage until she kills Kate. Why? No one knows. Because this lady is a Lady, they keep her tied up and go to London to investigate this bad guy, Donovan. Kate leaves her daughter (another thing I found weird - Kate goes into the nursery to see 8 month old Daughter, who is playing on the floor with her nanny - and she actually asks Nanny if she can join them - um, no, you're the mom, your baby, you pay Nanny's salary - you don't ask!). Kate insists on going to "help" - however, once they get to London they must keep her completely hidden at Lucian's home - I mean she must stay in her room - except when they decide she does not have to. And Lady escapes and kidnaps Kate (Kate gets a message that Lucian's sister is having her baby and there is trouble with the delivery and even though Lucian is out, she decides she must go - and she runs outside to get a hack - and escaped Lady Trapleigh just happens to be waiting in the hack. Now, I thought the baby situation was a ruse to get Kate out of the house. But it wasn't - and it was also a completely pointless part of the story. How did LT even know Kate would leave the house. She could have feasibly been inside for days, or only left with Lucian or whatever. Made no sense. And then the reason LT was after Kate? So contrived and stupid! The story lagged and then picked up and then lagged and then picked up - it did not leave me with the desire to read the other two books in the series. Well, maybe the Duke's story, since I am a sucker for a good Cinderella retelling, but the other one - nope, not feeling it based on the descriptions of the book and my feelings about the writing and plotting of this book. We'll see.

I am one of those readers that likes to give authors that at first read disappoint, a second or even a third chance. As of right now, it looks like I'll be giving this author closer to four or even five chances because once more I had a hard time liking this story and especially the heroine. Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face!

Everything from plot to characterization defied logic and if I can't connect to something or someone in a story, the author will loose me. And that's what happened here.

I am sorry to say that I just can't recommend this story, however, like I said, I will not give up on this author and will probably give her a couple of more chances.

Interesting second chance romance with the typical assumptions, confused emotions and reconnection complications alongside a typical mystery threat to the heroine, which the hero has to uncover. A bit predictable, but fun story and characters. While technically the third in the series I read it standalone and it all made sense. Widowed heroine is more independent than other books, with investments and able to save herself, and continues to be a very modern woman while also overcoming her insecurities and allowing herself to enjoy the long-desired relationship she's always wanted.
Mild to moderate steaminess

3rd and best, all mysteries solved, all characters explained, although I hope there are books for 2 more characters. This book is actually a little sad, all based on revenge. Lucien comes home from the war to find the woman he loves is a widow and he can finally pursue her. Katherine was his childhood friend, but he never told her he loved her, and she had lost all confidence in herself. It took him a while to figure out why, but all problems were solved in the end and they all lived happily ever after.

This friends-to-lovers book had lots of wonderful historical detail which I love. It did have a snippet of suspense and mystery about it which I don't wish to spoil, except to say that this part of the story didn't quite work for me. That said, I enjoyed the characters very much, especially the hero. I do feel he was written the best. I didn't quite buy the heroine's willingness to put herself in harm's way, given she is a fairly new mother. That said, the love scenes were sigh-worthy and Lucien, as I said, is totally swoony.

This is the third and last book in this trio. I was underwhelmed by how the story unfolded. The heroine had one really TSTL moment. The surprise was who shot and missed the intended victim in the first book. That reasoning did not carry the day for me as motive for three books' worth of reading, sadly.

Lucien Marvaine, as the second son, never though he would ever have the chance to win Katherine. He always knew that she deserved more, a heir and a man that could give her a title. Lucien has always loved Katherine, ever since they were children playing together, to close friends, and even more. So he decides to join the army and leave Katherine, but when he returns, he meets up with Katherine once more, who is widowed with a six month old daughter. Katherine has no desire for another marriage, the one she had was horrible and disastrous, and the only good that came from it was her precious girl. When Lucien starts courting her once more, Katherine is afraid that once he sees the real her he will be shamed by her. She doesn't want to risk his scorn. But Lucien is persistent and unwavering in his desire for her and will stop at nothing to have her, but Lucien will have a battle to win and like in any war, he will use any weapon at his disposal to seduce her and show her the true heart...

The Danger In Tempting An Earl was a charming and poignant story that won me over. I have read the second book in the series and loved it. The Danger in Tempting An Earl was endearing from beginning to end. It had quite a emotional tune to the story that balanced it out and I loved the way that Sophie Barnes used a unique set of characters and the setting to write a romance to warm your heart.

The story begins with Katherine and Lucien sharing a carriage together on their way to the Kingsborough ball. We see a friendly interaction between them if a bit strained from their time apart. Then the romance starts to slowly blossoms at the ball where Lucien comes up with a plan to make Katherine fall in love with him. A cunning plan that puts a new spin on the story, one that is quite entertaining, seeing these two circle each other without getting very close to each other yet. Their story is a dance of sorts, and the romance doesn't exactly begin with fireworks, but slow wooing and I loved how patient Lucien is with Katherine. He doesn't know the full extent of her reasons for not wanting marriage, but he is determined to win her no matter what. There is such determination and fierceness in his passion for her and I loved how he isn't willing to back down. Katherine is way stubborn, and after you read all of the story, you start to understand her reasons and the why of it, but you tend to get a bit impatient with her character especially when her stubbornness is worse than a mule. I loved the way these two end up together, and the way it had such a satisfying ring at the end. Charming and delightful!!! Excited to read more from this author.!!!!

Originally published at Rookie Romance.

Lucien has been in love with Katherine since they were children, but he never felt that he could give her what she deserved as the second son. When Lucien leaves for the Continent, Kate marries another man and the two have little contact over the years. When Lucien returns, he is now the Earl of Roxbury and Kate is a widow, giving him the perfect chance to woo her and finally marry the woman he's loved for years. Unfortunately, various circumstances get rather in the way of said wooing- not to mention the fact that Kate has very little intention of ever marrying again.

I liked both Kate and Lucien. Kate had an unhappy marriage which tore down her self-confidence, but she's happier now with her daughter and intends for it to remain just the two of them. Whilst I sympathised with Kate, she could be very stubborn. I'd have melted in the face of Lucien's seduction much earlier.
Lucien is very sweet and I loved that his heart had been so steadfast in its devotion to Kate. His attempts at courtship don't exactly go to plan but eventually his determination pays off!

Kate and Lucien had great chemistry, which proves rather troublesome for Kate since she is determined to recover her comfortable friendship with Lucien. I also enjoyed watching Lucien and Kate rebuild that previous friendship and seeing Lucien gain Kate's trust.

I loved the twists and turns in the story and the resolution to the mystery that runs throughout about the shooting at the Kingsborough Ball. This is a very sweet and emotional second-chance romance. Yet another reason why Sophie Barnes is one of my go-to authors!

Lucien has loved Katherine for a long time. Thinking he wasn't good enough for her he never told her and has been away from her for years. When he becomes an Earl he knows the time is right to make his move. Katherine is a widow and she plans on staying single. She is glad to see Lucien again as they have always been great friends. When he lets her know he has to marry soon and has a woman in mind she begins to look at him differently. Then she hears rumors he is in love with her. While she finds it hard to believe it all makes her look inside her own heart and what she wants. When Katherine finds herself in danger Lucien vows he will keep her safe, He also plans to show her what they could have with kisses and more. Katherine has o decide if she wants to let him go or give marriage another shot.

Katherine is a smart lady and a wonderful mom. She was treated by her husband and is afraid to let another man have the shot at hurting her. Lucien loves Katherine and she really is the only one he wants. He is very charming, protective and can be sneaky at times if it means he gets what he wants. I liked both of them and I loved Lucien's grandmother.

If you enjoy historical romance you will love this one. Katherine isn't the normal heroine in trouble waiting on a man. Nope she has learned to take care of her self and her daughter. She does rush in sometimes but she is doing it to protect those she cares about. It is a nice change seeing a character like her. Someone is after Katherine and it give Lucien the chance to show her how things could be between them. There is action in this book so it isn't all falling in love and such. It has a great plot and was a delight to read. I didn't see he why or who that was after Katherine and that was great. I enjoyed the chase not only to find the bad guy but the chase to see if these two would take a chance.

Lucian Marvaine, Earl of Roxbury, has loved Lady Kate Crossby, nearly all their lives, but Kate has always seen him as a friend. Back in England after years of being away on the Continent with nary a word, recently-widowed Kate is hurt by his seeming desertion. Lucian is determined to make amends and declare his love at long last. His first effort: escorting Kate to the Kingsborough Ball. Then, when Kate’s life is threatened, his first goal becomes keeping her safe from harm and discovering who harbors such ill will toward them both.

At last, the lingering questions about all that happened at the Kingsborough Ball are answered. First, I want to say how much I loved the way this series was structured, with each story loosely tied to the other, but all basically happening simultaneously. Each book involved a bit more intrigue than the last, culminating in this final installment, filled with kidnapping, blackmail, and attempted murder, all born of life-long grudges and loyalty. While I’ll admit to being a bit frustrated with Kate at times, it was a joy to see her regain the confidence she lost in her first marriage—an uphill battle many of us never manage to win completely—and finally trust herself and Lucian by embracing the growing love they share. With a few spoilers from the earlier books peppered throughout, I’d recommend starting from the beginning (The Trouble With Being a Duke); however, the self-contained plot can certainly stand on its own.

For Lady Katherine Langdon, widowed Viscountess Crosby, danger comes in two forms- Lucien Marvaine, Earl of Roxberry, who was the spare, and attempts on her life. The first is understandable; he’s handsome, has known her since her christening, they are friends and she finds herself attracted to him. The attraction is a bit disconcerting as she does not want to lose their friendship. A relationship that has become strained for reasons she is not sure of. The second form of danger has both her and Lucien at a loss.

When they meet again, Lucien is the Earl and Katherine is widowed. He sets about making her his as he should have done four years ago. He discovers the bright, confident woman he loves has been replaced with one that is timid, lacking self-confidence and wishes to blend into the background.

The pace of the story fast and the conversations are lively and the characters are brilliant. The twists and turns are beautifully orchestrated to keep you on your toes. Watching Katherine re-emerge and become the “bold and brazen” woman she once was is fabulous. The delightful characters of Lucien’s sister and grandmother and Katherine’s friend, Louise are elegantly written and help to keep Lucien on his toes. The villain is artfully hidden until the climax of the book- brilliant. I always enjoy Ms. Barnes’ work and this is no exception, well done.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is a friends-to-lovers story where the gentleman, Lucien Marvaine, was a younger son and never felt like he could court the object of his affection, Katherine. And then she married someone else so he went away to war. But now, her husband is dead, as is Lucien's older brother and father. Could they have a second shot?
I don't mind this kind of story although I sometimes get creeped out if (even though only friends) there is a brother-sister relationship early on. But this didn't feel that way, so that was nice. However, the book felt a little scatter-shot. There was so much going on with the story (Kate's baby! There's danger! But there's other danger! But is that really danger? And matchmaking! And other matchmaking! And we're falling in love! But are we? Yes!) It took me a long time to decide to read this book (i.e. it was almost due back at the library) and I ended up reading as fast as I could so I could get it back on time.
I definitely won't give up on Barnes as an author but I'm hoping the next book is a little less plot with a little more character (did Kate have a character? I couldn't tell.) Still gave it three stars because it was only a little frustrating and there were no HUGE issues that I had with it.

I liked this book, even though about one-third of it frustrated the hell out of me.

Lucien and Katherine are both terrific characters in their own right, each surviving their own personal hells while apart before being reunited years later. But their doubt and lack of admission for their feelings toward one another drove me crazy. Lucien’s asked another woman’s help in gaining Katherine’s attention, which I didn’t understand as he is the very picture of confidence. And Katherine, who lacks confidence thanks to her late husband, doubts the truth spoken by good friends who knew her better than her peers.

There’s an interesting mix of mystery, suspense, and romance in the pages of this book. Still, I guess it’s one of those better late than never sort of circumstances for these two. It took an act of violence for Lucien to jump into action and protect the woman he loved. And it took close quarters with Lucien for Katherine to see herself through his eyes and to truly hear what her heart had been telling her all along.

3.5*

2.7 Stars. Public Library 4/5/15. I liked the story idea and characters but it lacked that spark that takes it from good to great. There wasn't enough tension or suspense... we would be given a situation and just when we sink into it the situation would be resolved (what a waist of an opportunity). The description and the beginning of the book raised my expectations but the farther I got into the book the more disappointed I became. Plenty of things happen with the characters offering witty commentary but as things got exciting the author would go from showing us to telling us what happened. The problem only got worse the closer we got to the end of the book. The reasoning behind some of the actions was weak and stupid. This was my first book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone I'd recommend reading the other books first. I haven't decided if I'm going to read more of the series or not...

This was my first time reading this author and I have to say I was a little disappointed by this book. The story between Lucian and Kate was full of too many silly misunderstandings and missed chances, which work sometimes, but with these I just couldn't buy it and honestly they got a little annoying. There just wasn't enough excitement and parts of the book felt lacking and I wanted a little more explanation or detail in some areas. I also have to admit that I found myself wondering more about other couples in the book more than the couple I was actually reading about. On a positive note I will say that I did like that Kate saved herself a couple of times and wasn't completely the damsel in distress and I thought Lucian's grandmother was pretty funny.
I've heard the first book in this series is better so I'm going to try to read that - perhaps I just picked the wrong book to start with.
