About the author

Prague-born writer Franz Kafka wrote in German, and his stories, such as " The Metamorphosis " (1916), and posthumously published novels, including The Trial (1925), concern troubled individuals in a nightmarishly impersonal world.

Jewish middle-class family of this major fiction writer of the 20th century spoke German. People consider his unique body of much incomplete writing, mainly published posthumously, among the most influential in European literature.

His stories include "The Metamorphosis" (1912) and " In the Penal Colony " (1914), whereas his posthumous novels include The Trial (1925), The Castle (1926) and Amerika (1927).

Despite first language, Kafka also spoke fluent Czech. Later, Kafka acquired some knowledge of the French language and culture from Flaubert, one of his favorite authors.

Kafka first studied chemistry at the Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague but after two weeks switched to law. This study offered a range of career possibilities, which pleased his father, and required a longer course of study that gave Kafka time to take classes in German studies and art history. At the university, he joined a student club, named Lese- und Redehalle der Deutschen Studenten, which organized literary events, readings, and other activities. In the end of his first year of studies, he met Max Brod, a close friend of his throughout his life, together with the journalist Felix Weltsch, who also studied law. Kafka obtained the degree of doctor of law on 18 June 1906 and performed an obligatory year of unpaid service as law clerk for the civil and criminal courts.

Writing of Kafka attracted little attention before his death. During his lifetime, he published only a few short stories and never finished any of his novels except the very short "The Metamorphosis." Kafka wrote to Max Brod, his friend and literary executor: "Dearest Max, my last request: Everything I leave behind me ... in the way of diaries, manuscripts, letters (my own and others'), sketches, and so on, [is] to be burned unread." Brod told Kafka that he intended not to honor these wishes, but Kafka, so knowing, nevertheless consequently gave these directions specifically to Brod, who, so reasoning, overrode these wishes. Brod in fact oversaw the publication of most of work of Kafka in his possession; these works quickly began to attract attention and high critical regard.

Max Brod encountered significant difficulty in compiling notebooks of Kafka into any chronological order as Kafka started writing in the middle of notebooks, from the last towards the first, et cetera.

Kafka wrote all his published works in German except several letters in Czech to Milena Jesenská.

“Preparativos de una boda en el campo”, consta de tres fragmentos diferenciados y vio la luz en el año de 1908. De todas maneras comparte con el anterior el hecho de que también está inacabado.
La historia que se nos cuenta trata de un hombre llamado Eduardo Raban quien estando a punto de casarse en el campo con Betty, su novia “un tanto entrada en años pero con hermosos ojos” decide salir a caminar por el campo.
La narración gira en torno a lo que Raban ve a su alrededor, su interacción con el paisaje y con los distintos personajes que se va encontrando siendo el segundo más importante el de la lluvia, ya que constantemente está lloviendo desde el principio hasta el final del texto.
La lluvia acompaña a Raban a donde quiera que se dirija. Todo lo que se describa aquí son los animales, la gente que pasa caminando, los vehículos y los niños que forman parte del paisaje local.
Raban comienza a mezclarse con la gente mientras va caminando paraguas en mano al mismo tiempo que reflexiona acerca de todo lo que ve.
Lo llamativo aquí son los soliloquios de Raban, que por momentos pasan a transformando en pequeños extractos de monólogo interior tal como lo conocimos en Ulises de james Joyce.
Las constantes reflexiones, pensamientos y sentimientos de Raban chocan con lo externo que ve en su camino: «Pero si yo mismo diferencio entre uno y yo, ¿cómo puedo entonces quejarme de los otros? Quizás no sean injustos pero yo estoy demasiado cansado como para ponerme en claro de todo eso. ¿Por qué entonces no paso estas breves vacaciones en la ciudad para reponerme?»
Sus pensamientos, que no condicen con lo que sucede mientras camina tienden a una extraña regresión mental. Unas líneas más adelante y nuevamente nos topamos con más monólogos joyceanos. En un párrafo encontramos un indicio narrativo de lo que será La metamorfosis que recién comenzará a escribir en 1912 y se publicará tres años después: «Tal como estoy acostado en la cama, tengo el aspecto de un insecto grande, un escarabajo, un lucano, creo yo».
Comienza a hacerse tarde y se da cuenta de que tiene que volver donde su novia, así que enfila para tomar el tranvía, pero se cruza con Lement, un viejo amigo que lo demora.
Comenzamos a asistir por primera vez así en el especial manejo del tiempo que Kafka le imprime a sus; a esa la imposibilidad de avanzar, de acceder a lo que ellos quieren.
La charla se extiende; Lement se va no sin antes decirle algo con ironía que perturba a Raban. Sigue lloviendo, nunca para. Por momentos con intensidad y en otros casos con lloviznas intermitentes. Comienza a preocuparse. Se está haciendo realmente tarde y debe volver.
Luego de esperar con su paraguas bajo la lluvia encuentra un coche e interpela al chofer quien le responde con un desprecio inusitado, pero que le permite subir. Allí, sentado en el vagón junto a tres personas, escucha lo que hablan.
Los dos señores son viajantes de comercio (como Gregor Samsa de La metamorfosis), la mujer parece estar con uno de ellos. Los diálogos intrascendentes se suceden pero Raban no interviene. Parece ser un voyeur, un espectador de primera fila. Solo quiere bajar y ver a su novia.
La segunda parte del relato narra la vuelta de Raban bajando del coche y apurando el paso para llegar mientras sigue lloviendo intensamente. Ahora necesita tomar un ómnibus. Las demoras se suceden, y los obstáculos de sus futuras novelas aparecen para complicar el panorama de este personaje. Vuelven los pensamientos y las preguntas internas.
Lamentablemente, al texto original le faltan hojas intermedias en distintos puntos del relato, lo que dificulta el entendimiento. El lector pasa de seguir una historia moderadamente coherente a chocar con un diálogo incongruente que nada tiene que ver con lo que venía leyendo.
El autor sigue describiendo el entorno, el paisaje, las cosas, todo; casi en un exasperante estilo flaubertiano (al fin y al cabo es uno de los escritores preferidos de Kafka). La sucesión de escenas generan un auténtico recorrido cinematográfico por la ciudad antes de la invención del cine.
Raban entabla una conversación con otro pasajero. Hablan sobre libros, y las bondades de la literatura.
La historia comienza a virar hacia la intrascendencia y al igual que sus otros textos, se interrumpe como en La madriguera, como en El castillo. Se produce un corte abrupto y el lector se queda en ascuas. Una característica que se transformará en habitual en la obra de Kafka.

What did I think of Wedding Preparation in the Country? I think I'll read it again tomorrow. The language is beautiful, of course, but for me it was with a sense of Deja Vu. Been there, done that. You know the feeling. In the last three weeks I have been to the Ophthalmologist three times. Each time it is packed with people, mostly old women, older than me even, and the first thing I am aware of, or imagine, are the stares. I clutched my book to my chest and find the seat furthest away, just as Raban does in the train. Like Raban, and Kafka himself, I am out of my element. I sit for hours in long, dark hallways, listening to the chatter of the other patients, trying to ignore two TVs spouting the news over and over. Reading Wedding Preparations in the Country made me feel not so alone. There are other people with terrors like mine, and the language, oh such gorgeous language.

Even though this was an unfinished and unpublished story by Kafka in his lifetime one can still appreciate the haunting quality of his description of people and places. Like the story, I feel that Raban had no intention of completing his commitment of marrying Betty just in the way the author allows us to hear his inner thoughts, trepidations and turmoils.

even tho “incomplete” is part of the whole kafka thing, this one felt too disjointed and slow for my liking. But, the interesting Kafkaesque theme of non-arrival is here, and there’s good prose in here too (and tbf he wasn’t proud of this one)

A funny little collection, it has the long letter to his father, which is why I picked it up. There are also some fragments, and longer stories like "A Country Doctor" and "A Hunger Artist" (translated as "fasting showman"!). If I'm not mistaken, these are grouped together as they were published in Kafka's lifetime or shortly thereafter, which makes a lot more sense than grouping them by length as was done in the Schocken Complete Stories.

Wedding Preparations in the Country isn’t an inherently bad story, it’s just unfinished and lacking. There are many pages or several full sections of his manuscript missing which can make it hard to follow and there’s not a lot of plot to begin with. The unfinished story is at least well written, in true Kafka fashion, which earns it a star despite it being so empty of much else.

Throughly atmospheric in its cultivation of prose. Unlike "Description of a Struggle"... this story is something that I often seek out, in the structure of a concise, anecdotal tale. Not as much prolix-laden language, something that can be easily interpreted as literal or metaphysical (in some respects), and that also has a nice, grounded ending.

The anxiety, and feelings of loss, being washed away in puddles of rain was immensely cathartic. The final scene, where Raban at last, met up with the other gentleman, felt like an earned conclusion. The final quote even, "He's insanely ecstatic about anything beautiful," brings full-circle Raban's proclivity towards observing the townspeople. It provides a foundation for the reasoning behind the start of the story!

I would be lying if I said that I know exactly what Mr. Kafka had sought to convey, with all of the symbols in the story, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless! The first story of Kafka's that I had read (the aforementioned "Description of a Struggle") had too much going on, I preferred something sweet and simple. And, I would say, "Wedding Preparations in the Country" is more along those lines.

Yani genel olarak fena değil diyebilirim. Berbat değildi kesinlikle ama çok ilgi çekici yanı da yoktu benim için. İçerisinde iki öykü bulunuyor ve kitabın çoğunu kitaba ismini veren "Taşrada Düğün Hazırlıkları" kaplıyor. Evleneceği kadın Betty'nin yanına giderken Radan adlı adamın yolculuğundan bahsediyor ilk öykü. Üzerine zaten konuşulacak şey yok bir de öykü yazmalar şeklinde eksik eksik çıktığı için iyice karışık olmuş. Kafka'nın bunu da paylaşayım da boşa gitmesin dediği bir öykümsü bir şey olmuş. İkinci öykü "Avcı Gracchus" çok kısa olmasına rağmen benim daha çok hoşuma gitti. Uzun süre önce ölen Avcı Gracchus'un Riva kentinin belediye başkanı ile konuşması üzerinden gidiyor. Gotik bir havası vardı ve bana Asgardsreien yani Odin'in Vahşi Av'ını hatırlattı nedense. Kısaca, çok bir şey beklemeden seriyi tamamlayayım diyorsanız alıp okuyabilirsiniz.

kitabın adı taşrada düğün hazırlıkları fakat düğün hazırlığı ile ilgili bir anlatım yok. Raban'in nişanlısını görmeye giderken başından geçenleri anlatıyor. Roman kahramanı düğününe gider gibi değil. Nişanlısından da çok bahsetmiyor. Kitap taslaklardan toplandığı için eksik sayfalar da var. Kitabın adına göre bir hikaye beklentisi içinde okuyunca, sanki hikaye havada ya da boşlukta asılı kalıyor. Gibi geldi bana.
Kısa bir hikaye. Başladığım gün kitabı bitirdim. Sade ve akıcı bir dili var.

I’ve read the Arabic version, so this is not a review for the actual edition. It was the closest one to my version.

بالمجمل لا بأس به، كتاب كافكوي طبيعي ومعتاد. لكن لغة الكتاب كانت معقدة وصعبة بشكل مقرف، وعلامات الترقيم منثورة في الصفحات بلا حسيب ولا رقيب.

جدير بالذكر أن بعض القصص كانت ممتازة، ولكن عيب اللغة بالإضافة لتشتت القصص وضبابيتها صعّب عملية القراءة. أعتقد أن كل القصص هي فقط قناع لأمور أعقّد قصدها كافكا، وأن المجازيات المستخدمة تحتاج دراسة متأنية لتُفهم.

An incomplete work of Kafka which depicts in great detail the journey of the groom, Raban, travelling to the country to meet his future wife. Can't give a clear opinion on it as the story is missing quite a bit of its dialogue.

Ayın ve yılın son kitabını Franz Kafka'dan seçerek 2023'ü uğurluyoruz. Genel anlamda okuma olarak hedeflediğim şeylere ulaştığım bir yıl olmasa da bir şekilde bitmiş oldu. Yılın son günlerini Lacivert Klasikler'i okuyarak geçirdim ve bu şekilde de tamamladım. Daha önce sadece Dönüşüm novellasını okuduğum Kafka'dan okuduğum ikinci kitap ise Lacivert Klasikler'de de baskısı olan Taşrada Düğün Hazırlıkları kitabı oldu. Genelde bu seride çıkan kitaplara göre biraz daha popüler olan bu öyküyü de yıl bitmeden okuyup değerlendirmek istedim.

Kitapta iki adet öykü bizi karşılıyor. İlki ve uzun olanı, kitaba da ismini veren Taşrada Düğün Hazırlıkları isimli öykü. Öykünün tam bir metni yok anladığım kadarıyla, kendisini okurken çevirmen notu olarak 2 sayfa eksik, 3 sayfa eksik gibi cümleler gördüm ve bu da doğal olarak anlatım bütünlüğünü bozan detaylar oldu. Ayrıca aynı metnin bir de ikinci yazımı var ki orada olaylar daha farklı yöne gitse de ilki kadar uzun değil. İş hayatından yorulmuş bir karakterimiz var ve iki haftalık bir izin alıyor iş yerinden. Bu izni de gidip bir köyde geçirmeyi planlıyor. Daha trene biner binmez planından pişman oluyor çünkü daha önce hiç yolculuk yapmamış gezme amacıyla ve şehir hayatına da alıştığı için köyde ne yapacağını, nasıl zaman geçireceğini sorguluyor. "Oradaki diğer insanlar şunu şunu yapar, ben de onlara takılırım. Köy yeri sonuçta bunlar bunlar olur herhalde." diye kafasından geçirerek kendi kendini rahatlatmaya çalışan karakterimizin tren yolculuğunu ve akabinde köye inişini okuyoruz ama orada bitiyor öykü. En azından bizim okuduğumuz kadar, öykünün adına kadar gelmiyoruz bile. Sadece bir bahsi geçiyor o kadar. Bunun dışında ikinci yazımında da aynı cümlelerle başlayan öykümüz, karakterimizin yaşlı bir adamla konuşması ile başka yönlere kaysa da onun da sonunu okuyamıyoruz. Bu böyle bir öyküydü, ikinci öykü olan Avcı Gracchus ise yıllar önce ölmüş olan ünlü bir avcının hayaletini gören belediye başkanı ile avcı arasında geçen konuşmayı ele alan küçük bir hikayeydi. Hayalet falan diyince fantastik bir öyküymüş gibi görünebilir ama bence fantastikten ziyade büyülü gerçeklik olabilir çünkü çok da olağanüstü gelmedi okurken, sanki her zaman olan bir şeymiş gibi anlatılmış bu durum. Dönüşüm gibi. İki öykü de benim için ortalamaydı açıkçası.

Franz Kafka'dan şu ana kadar okuduğum tek eser Dönüşüm'dü ve bu iki öyküyü de yazardan okuduklarıma eklemiş oldum. Genelde Kafka'nın yazılarını ortalama bulsam da anlatım tarzını sevmişimdir. İnsanın kafasından geçen düşünceleri çok güzel yansıtıyor bence ve okurken empati yapıyorsunuz karakterle. "Ben olsam ben de böyle şeyler düşünürdüm." hissi yaratıyor okurken bende ve bu gerçekten çok güzel hisler veriyor bir okur olarak. Anlatımı bu derece güzel olsa da şu ana kadar beni konu olarak etkileyen bir öyküsünü pek okumamış olduğumdan dolayı Kafka konusunda hala istediğimi elde edebilmiş değilim. Çünkü mesela bu öykülerde de, özellikle kitaba adını veren Taşrada Düğün Hazırlıkları öyküsünden gerçekten beni etkileyecek bir şeyler okuyabilirim diye umut ediyordum. Özellikle öykünün başından insanı içine çeken bir durum olduğu için sonunu getirmeyi de merakla bekliyorsunuz okurken ama gerek öykünün derlenmesinde olan problemler nedeniyle, gerek hikaye akışıyla ilgili tuhaf durumlar vardı ve okurken güzel bir okuma serüveni pek yaşatmadı bana. İkinci öykü de her ne kadar bu durumun tersi bir şekilde devam etse de onda da hiçbir şeyi tam oturtmadan öykü sonlandı. Bu durumlar umarım diğer eserlerinde de olmuyordur yazarın. Çünkü kendisinden okumak istediğim bir kaç eser daha var. Bunun dışında iki öyküyü de ortalama buldum, yazardan daha iyilerini okumak istiyorum.

Ben bu kitapla 28. Lacivert Klasik eserimi tamamladım ve yeni yılda da bu kitaplardan elimde kalanları okumayı hedefliyorum. Belki bu serideki kitapları okumak isteyen biri için başlanacak bir kitap olabilir ama Kafka diye de okumak isteyenler olursa belki bir şans verebilirler. Ayı ve yılı bu şekilde kapatırken, ulaşamadığım okuma hedefim için hayıflanmayı bırakıp 2024 için okuma listelerimi oluşturmaya başladım bile. 2024 herkes için iyi geçer umarım.

"The woman with a bag could not sleep any longer, she sat up and looked through the window, after which she stared at the yellow flame of a petroleum lamp which glowed against the ceiling of the train wagon. Raban closed his eyes for a moment. Once he opened them again, woman with a bag was biting into a piece of cake covered in brown jam. The bundle next to her was unfolded. Merchant passenger smoked his cigar in silence and constantly made motions as if he was shaking off the ash from the tip. The other one had been using the tip of his knife to audibly tamper with the mechanism of a pocket watch."

Prvi put čitam nezavršene rukopise. Sviđa mi se da vidim kako pisac pravi različite verzije i šta misli da treba da izmeni. Tako može da se primeti u kom pravcu misli da je bolje ići, šta treba da izbaci, na čemu da se koncetriše. Ova priča ipak nije posebna, previše je u skicama i ne vodi nigde, iako ima lepa zapažanja. Još jedan nedostatak razumevanju je što bar deset stranica fali, tako da se priča stalno prekida. To može da se posmatra i kao modernistički postupak, pa čitalac može da se stavi u ulogu detektiva, ali Kafkine priče je dovoljno teško tumačiti i kad su potpune. Ono što mi je zapalo za oko je da se već ovde pominje motiv bube iz ''Preobražaja''. Glavni lik ne želi da ide u selo i organizuje svoju svadbu, već bi biše voleo da može da ostane u gradu, a da svoje ''obučeno telo'' pošalje na selo. Zamišlja da ima telo velike bube (gundelja ili slično) i ne želi da izlazi iz stana, već koprca nogama u krevetu.

It's actually pretty controversial, though kinda boring, just my opinion.

It's way less surreal and easier to read than others Kafka's early works, though. you won't find any classic wedding prep here; the hero's mainly prepping himself morally. Lots of his thoughts on what's happening and might happen when he gets to the village and see his bride. that's basically the main theme in a book (wow soo surprising isn't it). he think about how he gonna reject or not reject going on walks in the country, did his bride already said something about him, how it's gonna affect his reputation etc etc. so yeah, mostly it's just self reflection of the character. the hero is a classic Kafka's hero, kinda anxious, not confident and introvert (such a surprise I know right)

Overall, it's not bad, but (again, just me) it's not essential reading and there's not much to ponder.

Hated the Wedding preparations story (still have no idea what message he was trying to get over) and thought I’d have to abandon this book I completed. Persevered and discovered “letter to my Father” and loved it. Any of us who have had a difficult relationship with a parent will appreciate Kafka’s exploration of such a dynamic.

Not my favorite Kafka-
Good portrayal of the bustling business that accompanies cityscapes, but an unsatisfying end and a story that isn’t particularly interesting to begin with, just a man determined to see his bride despite obstacles and not knowing if he truly wants to marry her

First time to read Kafka writings, do not know how to describe it! the way he dig deep in one simple idea that might come to our minds and made a deep story out of it, really loved it, I guess will not be the last time to read his creations
