How Does a 1 Hit Point Dark Lord Save the Real World?
Kit and her friends are gamers, but not the ordinary kind. It seems that Track Jick was right, and that people who play roleplaying games really are wizards and witches. Kit's game master uses a magical die to transport them to an alternate world where they can really become their characters, and forget all about the real world.
Unfortunately, during a power scuffle the d20 gets knocked into the game world. If they can't get it out then the game world will explode, and everything in it will die. Worse, to Kit's mind, their parents will be disbarred, and they'll never be able to play again.
Enter one tiny goblin with just a single hit point, but a heart large enough to save a fake world...if he can reach the d20 before the Dark Lord White 2.0. Along the way Bert will meet his fellow dark lords, and finally learn magic. Plus Boberton gets very large indeed.
By day I am an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. By night I am Batman. Ok maybe not. One can dream though, right?
I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.
Wait you’re still reading?
Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 38 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the beautiful town of Mill Valley. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.
I live in a tiny studio that I can cross in (literally) five steps and don’t own an oven. But you know what? It’s worth it. I love developing iPhone apps and if you want to work in San Francisco you accept that rent for a tiny place costs more than most people’s mortgage.
If you and about 2 million other people start buying my books I promise to move out of Marin to a house in the redwoods up in Guerneville. No pressure. Wait that’s a lie. Pressure.
It's clever, the author dragging in references to all sorts of other genres and well known storylines. I think star wars even gets a mention The problem is that it tries to be funny yet isn't. Ironic yes, but not funny Once you get past this, it's an enjoyable read. Bert is lawful/good and everyone else isn't. He tries to look after everyone else and does a pretty good job. White from book 1, is back in book 2, but even more powerful and Kit does her best to help Bert. The ending is no real surprise and leaves a pretty obvious continuation for book 3 I'm surprised book 3 isn't out already and would have looked forward to reading it, so will keep an eye out for it.
I slowed down and read this one slowly although I wanted to read it in one sitting. The pop references are one of the best parts of the first book and the second goes so much further! I couldn't stop laughing and had a huge smile on my face the entire time.
Lastly, if you haven't yet read it, check out The Magitech Chronicles and Magitech Legacy. There is a tie in to Bert, briefly, in the Legacy series which makes a section near the end so much better.
I LOVE Bert, so glad this book ended the way it did. Bert deserves adventure.
With this installment we get a bigger peak into the 'real world', which leave so many questions on the table as it's not your average group of kids playing a role playing game.
Plus we get to check back in with Bert and the gang, exploring more of the game world and meeting a many new friends. It's very apparent that Chris Fox has a love for games, and media. His personal love for nerdy things, shines through every page.
There are so many Easter eggs in this book, I can't even imagine how many I missed since I am not a gamer. Hilarious read, you'll love it if you play DnD or WoW with a group of friends.
Fun story for anyone who loves RPGs. Bert is awesome. Many times in games over the years I have wished the NPCs and critters could think more independently. Bert can and does. Funny stories, interesting and irreverent references to popular games and movies and a 1 hitpoint ruler of them all! What more could you ask for? Made for a very enjoyable afternoon read. Looking forward to book three.
Hullo~ If you haven't read the first book you're missing out in life
Comedy and cuteness abound in this much awaited sequel. I am a grown man who finds himself Ahhh'ing over an adorable goblin. Literally blushing from cuteness and rooting for the the half hit point underdog. I enjoy low fantasy and dark tales, and yet I've fallen in love with Bert the goblin. And I believe you will too.
Found this to be a fun and breezy sequel, with the same sort of jokes and humour. I liked getting to know the D&D players in the real world, it added a nice bit of texture to the game world (though not as much as I'd have liked). Bert and Boberton are just as likeable as before. The story seemed to tail off at the end, and like the first book in the series I found some of the jokes a little eye-rolling. Overall a fun, short read to be taken as it is.
Ngl but this one was really meh. I loved the first book because of its pop culture reference and satire to the whole gamelit genre. Its cheesy geeky fun.
The second book on the other hand tries to be more serious, adding stuff like actual magic and real life universe-ending threats. The whole theme of the book being just a fun make-believe is gone. Now, the lore has been expanded and in its universe, magic is now actually real.
The characters are mostly the same except Boberton who is now the size of a pony. White it still here, which sucks. The book also reused the same villain from the previous one. The new book could have used a new villain than White.
Bert is such a nice enjoyable character. The premise of being inside a role playing game is fun to read about. The other characters, even the villain are like the way people would play the game. This has been an most enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the first book but was uncertain about whether it was good enough to make me want to bother with the next. After finishing book two I have no doubt and am excited for the next volume.
I'm pretty sure I didn't catch all of the easter eggs and references to toys and games I played with when I was a kid, but the fun Chris seemed be be having while writing this made it so much fun to read. I'm looking forward to Bert 3.
I’m really glad that there was a second book. I love Bert he is awesome. I’m also glad that it looks like another one is coming. Hopefully quicker than book 2.
Quick read and entertaining, but it tries too hard to be funny. A bit like Ready Player One there and doesn't quite do it as well (but at least it's not 80s references)
Bert is an absolutely adorkable NPC and hands down my favourite MC in a story riddled with tongue in cheek, cheesy as F names that are plays on words from recognisable works. I spent the hours reading this smiling, giggling, rolling my eyes, and unwilling to put it down. I grabbed this book to be entertained, and I was, very much :) Looking forward to what's in store for Dark Lord Bert and Boberton next.
