Finally, the second book is out there and i was so exciting to see how this story will play out after all...
Unfortunately, now that i finished the book, I'm not very satisfied and not because it wasn't a good story, but because everything turned upside down for once again and now, I'm dying for the next book!!!
May seems so far away.... So, so far away... And after that ending, i don't have patient at all to wait!!!!
But i will suck it up and i will wait. What else can i do???



Well, the previous book left us in a very compromised place...
Everything changed in Germania's kingdom and in Emilia's life for once again...
At the present, a month later, Emilia is more sheltered than ever and the nightmares are not fading away...
Emilia is in a bad place mentally and she feels so alone... No family, no best friend, no Carter...
She has to take the matters in her hands, but for some freedom, she had to pay some price...

Well, in gthis book, we were in the middle of this wonderful story and i wouldn't want to say much and make some major spoilers...
In here, Emilia is being forced to face her duties and her people.... And here, she can prove to herself that she could be a wonderful leader in the future...
At the same time, her love life is in a bad place... Her feelings for Carter, her stepbrother, are always present and even though by each day are getting stronger, she has to stay purposely away from him... Even though she is hurting herself and him...
Except the above, an assassin are behind her...
As you can understand, Emilia has lots of things in her plate and how she will manage to balance them all???

For once again, i loved Emilia... She was a wonderful person!!!!
In this book, she had changed so much from the girl that she used to be!!!
Even though her new role wasn't something that she wanted, she had adjusted very well...
And believe me that when she will become a queen, she will be people's favorite!!!
But because i has a romantic heart, her love life trouble me very much!!!
And i think that her reaction to the end was a little bit unfair and irrational!!!!

I loved Carter Thorne from the very first moment with his assholeness and fuck you attitude, but here, we saw a different man... We saw a man in love... A man that he was willing to fight for this love...
Unfortunately, his love interest is with a forbidden woman and there are many things that are standing between them... Duty... Family... A whole kingdom!!!
My heart was aching for him so much more than for Emilia!!!!
And damn, i will repeat myself, but i needed some pages with his POV!!!!

Also in here, i missed seeing Owen and i needed something more from Linus... A sort of connection with his daughter...
And what had amaze me is that Carter and Chloe, the stepsiblings, seems to have pure feelings about the new addition in the family... Usually, it's not that simple!!!
I'm always enjoying Chloe's appearance and you already know how i feel about Carter...
That evil witch, Octavia, didn't have a big part in here too, but i'm sure that she had a big role in all this mess!!!
I can't wait for the last part!!!! I NEED it sooner!!!!

Emilia is proving to be one badass heroine and I am loving it. I felt like we really got to see her step into her new roll in this book and also discover how tough she could really be. Page after page I became more intrigued with her and also with trying to figure out who is after the crown. I still have so many questions so I'm dying to get more.

I also loved the connection that we got to see between Emilia and Carter even though it wasn't featured too too much. Which just meant that I was ten times more curious and screaming even louder for them to get together. I need to see those two get a happy ending, dangit! Also Chloe, that girl is definitely the character that has me smiling the hardest every time she shows up so I definitely need more of her too.

Overall, this was a fantastic addition to this series and showed so much character development. I'll be waiting for the conclusion on the edge of my seat.

SPOILERWARNUNG, da es sich um den zweiten Teil einer Reihe handelt.

Inhalt: „Golden Throne“ ist der zweite Teil der „Forbidden Royals“- Trilogie von Julie Johnson. Er ist am 27.11.2020 bei LYX erschienen.
Seitdem Emilia nicht mehr nur eine Studentin sondern die Kronprinzessin von Caerleon ist, hat sich ihr Leben komplett geändert. Sie ist nun eine Person des öffentlichen Lebens und muss neue Aufgaben übernehmen. Auch im Palast gibt es weiterhin Intrigen und Machtdemonstrationen. Zu allem Überfluss soll Emilia sich jetzt auch noch mit einer Menge Verehrern rumschlagen. Allerdings bringen ihr Stiefbruder und die Gefühle für ihn, sie immer noch durcheinander..


Meinung: Dieses Cover ist einfach nur schön. Auch dieser Teil glänzt wieder durch ein dezentes Äußeres. Der Titel wird durch den Thron gut wiedergespiegelt. Sowohl der Titel als auch das Cover passen perfekt zu dem ersten Teil und der ganzen Geschichte. Übersetzt wurde die Geschichte von Anika Kluever. Auch in diesem Band wird die Geschichte wieder aus Emilias Sicht geschrieben. Der Schreibstil und die Storyline lassen einen nur so durch die Geschichte fliegen. Die Geschichte wird nicht irgendwie künstlich in die Länge gezogen, sondern folgt einem roten Faden. Trotzdem gibt es noch einige interessante Wendungen und Überraschungen. Das Einzige was ich auch weiterhin leicht kritisieren muss ist, dass Carter in meinen Augen etwas zu wenig vorkommt. Im ersten Band konnte man ihre Gefühle und Gedanken füreinander sogar noch ein bisschen mehr erleben als hier. Er ist leider mehr eine Randfigur, obwohl er der Loveinterest ist. Insgesamt finde ich das auch gar nicht so schlimm, da in Emilias Leben auch so genug passiert und es ist interessant zu sehen, wie sie ihren neuen Alltag meistert. In Band zwei entwickelt sie noch mehr Persönlichkeit. Sie hat ihren eigenen Willen und ist nicht bereit sich einfach anzupassen. Sie wird richtig zur Kämpferin und man kann ihr dabei zusehen, wie sie in die Rolle der Kronprinzessin wächst. Die Familienverhältnisse bleiben auch weiterhin interessant. Diesmal lernt man auch das Personal noch ein bisschen mehr kennen. Ich weiß noch nicht worauf das Ganze hinausläuft, aber kann es kaum erwarten das im dritten Band zu erfahren. Wie schon bei dem ersten Band, gibt es auch hier am Ende einen Cliffhanger. Ich bin mir sicher, dass der Einstieg in den letzten Band genauso wie hier einfach und spannend sein wird!


Fazit: Ich liebe es! Die Fortsetzung setzt genau dort an, wo der Vorgänger geendet hat. Man erlebt alle möglichen Emotionen und fragt sich immer noch wer hinter den Anschlägen auf die königlichen Familienmitgliedern steckt und warum. Die Auflösung wird es dann wohl im letzten Band „Diamond Empire“ geben. Der dritte Band erscheint am 26.02.2021 bei LYX.

Ungefähr vor einem Jahr habe ich den ersten Teil der Forbidden-Royals-Trilogie gelesen, welcher für mich sogar zum Jahreshighlight wurde. Auch der zweite Teil, "Golden Throne" von Julie Johnson, hat mir ausgesprochen gut gefallen.

Das Cover trifft nicht wirklich meinen Geschmack. Aber trotzdem muss ich zugeben, dass es etwas eigenes und besonderes an sich hat. Es passt zudem optisch zu "Silver Crown" und "Diamond Empire". Der Schreibstil von Julie Johnson hat mich mit diesem Buch wieder überraschen können. Ich mag den Stil der Autorin und möchte unbedingt noch weitere Bücher von ihr lesen. Sie schreibt mitreißend und humorvoll.

Die Charaktere haben sich in diesem Buch erkennbar weiterentwickelt. Ein wenig kritisieren würde ich allerdings, dass Carter kaum eine Rolle in "Golden Throne" spielt. Ich hätte mir definitiv mehr Szenen mit ihm gewünscht. Ich finde es jedoch absolut okay, dass in diesem Buch der Fokus eher auf der Charakterentwicklung von Emilia liegt. Diese war mir sehr sympathisch. Ich konnte ihr Handeln gut nachvollziehen. Manchmal hätte ich mir mehr innere Monologe von ihr gewünscht. Carter spielte leider kaum eine Rolle. Er hat in diesem Buch gezeigt, dass ihm Emilia wichtig ist und er sich von ihr angezogen fühlt. Aus diesem Grund hat sich die Beziehung der beiden Charaktere nur in kleinen Schritten weiterentwickelt. Ein bisschen enttäuscht hat mich leider, dass einige Nebencharaktere weiterhin keinerlei Bedeutung hatten. Vor allem hätte ich mir mehr Szenen mit Owen, Henry, Arden oder König Linus gewünscht.

Die Handlung ist für mich durchweg spannend und ergreifend gewesen. Bemängeln würde ich bloß, dass das Buch viel zu schnell vorbei war. Ich hätte die Geschichte am liebsten sofort weitergelesen und finde es schade, dass man aus der Geschichte eine Trilogie gemacht hat. Ich werde die Reihe auf jeden Fall weiterlesen, aber besonders dieser Teil war irgendwie unnötig. Ich bin der Meinung, dass viele Szenen nur als eine Art Lückenfüller dienen und würde zusammenfassend sagen, dass "Golden Throne" ein fesselndes Buch für Zwischendurch ist. Es war mir schlichtweg zu kurzweilig. Manchmal hatte ich das Gefühl, dass die Autorin nur an der Oberfläche gekratzt hat und man noch viel mehr Potential hätte ausschöpfen können.

Ich habe dieses Buch sehr gerne gelesen und kann es teilweise weiterempfehlen. Es beinhaltet einige Intrigen, wichtige Themen und interessante Plottwists. Das Ende hat mich nicht vom Hocker gerissen, aber vorhersehbar war es für mich allerdings auch nicht. Ich bin nun sehr gespannt auf das Finale der Trilogie und hoffe, dass ich nicht enttäuscht werde.

3.5 SECRET CROWNS

While there are moments I loved, Torrid Throne, ultimately, didn’t have enough development with the plot or the characters for me to fall in love with it like I did Dirty Halo. 

There are moments within this story I would give 5 crowns to. Any moment with Carter and Emilia is one million percent electric. You can feel the want and angst permeate the air whenever they are near each other. Their desires licks the air. It is palpable, and I loved every single moment.

The pacing and plot development of this story is too slow for me. There are too many avenues presented: danger from the anti-monarchy group, the betrayal of Owen, the issue with potential suitors, the current threat to the throne, Carter’s past relationship, the forbidden romance between the two. All of these areas are talked about but few are really developed, which left the plot feeling very underdeveloped and very much like filler for book 3. It also leaves me feeling, as a reader, that I have no idea where the story is going or even how all of these plot details that have been introduced will be resolved in the final book. Because now that they have been introduced to the story, I need all parts resolved in Sordid Empire.

The last chunk of the book, though, would get 5 CROWNS. I loved it. Couldn’t get enough. There was plot progression, emotional and sexy moments with Emilia and Carter. It was everything I hoped the whole book would have been. 

While Torrid Throne missed the mark for me, I still enjoyed Julie Johnson’s writing, and I’m still largely invested in Carter and Emilia’s romance. I’ll be excited to see how this all ends.

I loved this book but not as much as the first one. I almost feel like this was a filler book. I wanted more of Carter and Emilia. I wanted more of everything. Don’t get me wrong I still ate this one up but I found myself skimming some of Emilia’s thoughts a little here and there. I really wanted a chapter or two of Carter’s POV too.
I shed a few tears and then my heart is pounding at that ending! That ending though OMG!! Damn!!
I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Emilia entwickelt sich weiter, zwar fühlt sie sich als Prinzessin noch nicht wirklich wohl und kommt auch mit ihrer Stiefmutter überhaupt nicht zurecht, aber sie gewöhnt sich langsam daran, wird etwas selbstbewusster und trifft eigene Entscheidungen. Sie kämpft nicht mehr dagegen an und auch wenn sie sich noch nicht besonders königlich fühlt, fühlt sie mehr und mehr das Gewicht und die Verantwortung der Krone.

Auch bei diesem Buch hatte ich das Gefühl, dass es zu kurz war. Manche Szenen sind relativ lang und man kann die Handlung wirklich schnell zusammenfassen, weil einfach nicht besonders viel passiert. Es gibt sowohl spannende als auch romantische Momente, aber gerade die Liebesgeschichte fand ich hier sehr enttäuschend. Man merkt schon, dass das der zweite Band einer Trilogie ist, die vor allem einen Übergang zwischen Start und Finale darstellt. Man knüpft schon an die losen Fäden vom Vorgänger an, hat aber überhaupt nicht vor, irgendetwas abzuschließen, man soll nur gespannt auf den Abschluss der Reihe warten. Darunter leidet dann aber die Handlung in diesem Buch, weil man immer in der Luft hängt und nichts Halbes und nichts Ganzes hat.

Trotzdem kann ich sagen, dass man wirklich schnell durch das Buch kommt, weil es eben sehr kurz ist und nie Langeweile aufkommt. Ich war gespannt, wie sich Kronprinzessin Emilia entwickelt und in der Hinsicht war ich ganz zufrieden. Ich hätte gern noch mehr Antworten gehabt und dafür vielleicht weniger von der Stiefschwester Chloe.

Fazit
"Golden Throne" war an einigen Stellen schon sehr spannend und die Entwicklung der Protagonistin hat mir auch gefallen. Aber leider war das Buch ein typischer zweiter Band einer Trilogie und konzentriert sich mehr darauf, vieles in das Finale zu schieben und daher hängt man etwas in der Luft. Schade!

4 “SoMany Secrets” Stars


The continuation of Forbidden Royals......Princess Emilia and her overwhelming, all consuming new life as a royal is filled with angst, sadness, and a feeling of being suffocated. But it’s also a new beginnings of sorts if she embraces what has been cast down to her.

There are many hands in the pot, stirring up trouble for Princess Emilia. Octavia is ever present but I found her rather silent in this book. She’s definitely up to no good. As for Chloe, Emilia’s step sister, she turns out to be a breathe of fresh air. I love Chloe and her feisty, sarcastic caring self. An ally for Emilia. And then there is Carter🔥, Carter🔥, Carter🔥.........that brooding, angsty man that Emilia can’t ever have for her forever.

As Emilia becomes more comfortable in her role as a Princess, evil forces are still lurking wanting to end the monarchy. I think I know who the evil puppet master will be in the end but I also feel like it could be someone else. The ending was dramatic and created a thrilling sense to the story.

There are still so many questions yet to be answered that I can’t wait for book 3. But most importantly will Emilia and Carter find their HEA? After all, this is a Royal series with a King and Queen, a Princess and of course, a dashing Prince Charming.

Insgesamt war „Golden Throne“ ein gutes Buch mit interessanten Facetten, neuen Entwicklungen und einem Ende, das einem Knall gleichkommt.

Ich fand es komisch, dass Carter am Anfang gar nicht aufgetaucht ist (bis auf die Ausnahme im ersten Kapitel).
Ab Seite 130 wurde seine und Emilias Beziehung dann endlich auch thematisiert, was ich gut gemacht fand. Jedoch konnte ich Emilia da manchmal nicht ganz verstehen ...
Von den beiden hätte ich mir im Ganzen aber mehr gewünscht.

Es geht im zweiten Teil sehr viel um das neue Leben, in dem Emilia sich zurechtfinden muss, und das, was damit letzten Endes auch einhergeht.
Ich bin sehr auf den Abschluss gespannt!!!

I've been reading Julie Johnson stories for a long time and she's blown me away with her next level, darkly delicious angst. Holy smokes is this book a rabbit hole of foreboding danger mixed with so much seductive, taboo, slow-burn tension. The second book of The Forbidden Royals Trilogy leaves you no less on the edge of your seat as when you started (and yes, it must be read in order this is NOT a stand alone).

At the cusp of peril, the new Princess Emilia starts finding her voice and her backbone within the Lancaster monarchy. However shadows are still lurking around corner making efforts to bring not only the monarchy down but to destroy the new Princess as well. I felt that the plot arc of Torrid Throne really ramped up perfectly. We see Emilia growing and dawning understanding in a lot of ways from book one. I'm excited to see where Julie Johnson takes us to wrap this series up. For me, some of the chemistry between the two mains was lost in this as the anti-hero was noticeably absent through the middle. Johnson balanced this out nicely by showcasing Emilia's strengths and growth but I had wished there was a little acknowledgement of that growth from the anti-hero especially with the maelstrom of emotions swirling between the two.

None the less, I'm excited about this trilogy. Julie Johnson has taken contemporary issues from our current global stage and highlighted the hypocrisy while staging both sides of the coin in her beloved Germania. Through Princess Emilia we're seeing a comforting side of human nature when in power and how that power effects her and her kingdom. I'll be on the edge of my seat waiting for book three, Sordid Empire.

You guys!! There hasn't been a series that I have been as excited about like I've been with Julie Johnson's Forbidden Royals trilogy. Torrid Throne begins where Dirty Halo left off where Emilia must now deal with the fallout after that shocking cliffhanger in book one and the consequences her one night with Carter still has on her heart and memories.

Gah!! This story brings me right back into Emilia's feelings as she struggles with becoming a Lancaster. But while I loved her inner snark and sass, I found that book two lacked the special something that book one had. Don't get me wrong: Carter and Emilia were FIRE! There is something about him that is just so delicious as we watched both Carter and Emilia curse the legacy and the crown that may ultimately cost them a true chance at happiness. I just felt storywise there was a lack of progression on quite a few storylines and characters from Dirty Halo.

All in all, this book was a great tease to what I hope will be Emilia's rise to true greatness in Sordid Empire! Bravo! 4 stars! ~Ratula

Torrid Throne, the second installment in the Forbidden Royals Trilogy, is another winner! Emilia’s journey navigating through her new princess duties is mesmerizing and intriguing. There's a lot of unanswered questions about the threats on the royal family that just keeps getting closer to be unveiled. Julie Johnson succeeded in creating a sequel that had me invested all read long with her stunning prose and surprising revelations.

"He’s looking at me like I’m half-poison, half-cure. Equal parts salvation and devastation."

I didn’t think I could enjoy Emilia more than I already did, but I was wrong. More than ever a public figure, she doesn’t shy away from being authentic and ardent, but still enforces her influence over the population of Germania! Her audaciousness is inspiring and she had me in awe. While she acts without the consent of her advisors more than ever, she’s also crumbling under the weight of her new responsibilities. For someone so real, it’s difficult to live this life of obligation!

Her relationship with Carter is still shaky and challenging. They can’t deny this irresistible draw to each other, but it’s so forbidden that it makes all their meetings that much heartbreaking, yet powerful and angsty. There’s a limited amount of romantic moments between this amazing couple and I just wanted a little more of these insanely intense scenes between them. I treasured them even more when they happened.

Once again, Julie Johnson penned a very pleasant tale full of mystery with Torrid Throne. I was seized by this world of trickery and illicit passion! With that ending, I’m more than anxious for the final tome, Sordid Empire!

Golden Throne von Julie Johnson

Der Schreibstil hat mich wie in band eins wieder mitgerissen. Julie Johnson schreibt gefühlvoll und tiefgründig aber zugleich auch locker und leicht, sodass die Seiten beim Lesen nur so dahin fliegen.

Emilia hat in diesem Buch eine beachtliche Charakterentwicklung gemacht. Sie lernte aus ihren Fehlern und wuchs an den Herausforderungen. Sie war mir sehr sympathisch, sodass ich mich gut in sie hineinversetzen konnte. Sie wurde ihrer Rolle als Prinzessin wirklich gerecht, denn sie hatte ein unfassbar großes Herz. Sie blieb sich selber treu und ließ sich nicht verbiegen, was wirklich bewundernswert war. Carter hatte mein Herz bereits in band eins gestohlen, doch in diesem Teil wuchs er mir immer mehr ans Herz. Er war loyal, liebevoll und ehrlich, besonders zu Emilia. Jedoch hätte ich mir da mehr Szenen mit ihm gewünscht, da er mein absoluter Liebling war und mir in diesem Band leider etwas zu kurz kam. Auch die anderen Charaktere wirkten sehr authentisch, auch wenn mir nicht alle unbedingt sympathisch waren.

Die Handlung knüpft direkt an Band 1 an, weshalb man sich wieder direkt im Geschehen befand. Man wollte immer weiterlesen, da die Handlung unglaublich spannend und mitreißend war. Es war unvorhersehbar und die Wendungen waren schockierend. Trotz der Dünne des Buches, hatte es viel Inhalt, es geschah immer wieder etwas neues, womit man nicht gerechnet hatte. Auch die Beziehung zwischen Carter und Emilia hat sich weiterentwickelt, die Spannung war durchgehend präsent. Das Verbotene an der Liebesgeschichte machte es noch aufregender und prickelnder. Es war eine turbulente Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle, voller Höhen und Tiefen, die einen mitfiebern ließen. Zudem gewann die Geschichte an Tiefe und Emotionen, was sie noch vielschichtiger machte.Das Buch ist alles andere als ein rosaroter Prinzessinnenroman, man wird mit der brutalen Realität konfrontiert und man erkennt die Schattenseiten des Prinzessinnen Daseins. Die letzten Kapitel waren ergreifend, emotional und dramatisch. Das Ende war überwältigend und erschütternd, es kamen Dinge ans Licht, mit denen ich nicht gerechnet hatte und die mich kalt erwischt haben, weshalb ich umso geschockter war.

Nach der gelungenen und spannenden Fortsetzung und dem fiesen Ende, kann ich es kaum erwarten das Finale der Reihe zu lesen. Das Buch konnte mich begeistern, denn es war bis zur letzten Seite fesselnd, gefühlvoll und authentisch. Ich kann jedem (besonders denen, die gerne royale Liebesgeschichten lesen) die Reihe nur empfehlen! 4.5/5 [Werbung|Rezensionsexemplar]

Holy Torrid Throne! Actually, Holy Carter Thorne! Can we get some more of him?! And oh Emilia! She's turning into such a badass but the things that she has to go through in this book! I laughed with her and Chloe and I cried with her too. I want to hug Emilia and shake her at the same time. And then hug her again. I loved her personal guards and I really hope we get more of them in the next book. I need to know what is going on with Owen too. Ugh, the worst part is waiting for the next book but it is so worth it for this story! I seriously cannot wait to see what comes next.

Worum geht’s?

Emilias Leben wurde gänzlich auf den Kopf gestellt. Vor 2 Monaten war sie noch eine Bürgerliche und jetzt plötzlich ist sie die Kronprinzessin. Nach den dramatischen Ereignissen am Ende von Band 1 muss Emilia mehr denn je den Weg in ihre neue Aufgabe finden. Eine Aufgabe, die sie nicht haben wollte, von der sie aber bald merkt, dass sie als Kronprinzessin mehr als nur eine hübsche Statue ist. Als ihr dann noch von zahlreichen Verehrern der Hof gemacht mir und ihre Gefühle für Carter ihr zunehmend den Atem rauben, geschieht eine unfassbare Katastrophe, die ihr Leben ein für alle Mal aus den Kopf stellen wird…

Golden Throne ist Band 2 der Forbidden Royals-Reihe. Es werden Vorkenntnisse aus Band 1 benötigt und das Buch ist nicht in sich geschlossen. Die Bücher können nicht unabhängig gelesen werden.


Schreibstil / Gestaltung

Auch das Cover von Golden Throne kann wieder überzeugen. Passend zum Titel ziert das Cover ein goldener Thron und wie bei Band 1 bereits die herumfliegenden Partikel. Es ist ein stimmungsvolles und ansprechendes Cover, was zum Setting und zur Geschichte passt. Das Buch wird wieder linear durch Emilia als Ich-Erzählerin berichtet. Dem erneut zynischen Prolog ist zudem ein Stammbaum zur besseren Übersicht der Charaktere vorgeschaltet. Der Schreibstil ist sehr angenehm, das Buch lässt sich flüssig und leicht lesen.

Meine Meinung

Es war einmal eine Leserin, die sich bereits in den Seiten von Silver Crown verlor und so begeistert war, dass sie Golden Throne nicht abwarten konnte. Als das Buch endlich kam, verzog sie sich in ihr stilles Kämmerlein und las es – ein einem Rutsch. Was wie ein Märchen klingt, ist bittere Realität. Denn Golden Throne war eines dieser Bücher, was man nicht weglegen konnte.

Nachdem mich ja Silver Crown wirklich überraschte (ich bin auf den Klappentext reingefallen und habe eine nette, heiße Lovestory erwartet und stattdessen ein mitreißendes Drama mit ein bisschen Liebe bekommen), war ich sehr gespannt, ob die Autorin den hohen Erwartungen standhalten kann. Silver Crown war ein Knall. Ein vielseitiger, interessanter, leicht zynischer, intriganter und zugleich mitreißender Knall. Kronprinzessin Emilia, die in die royale Welt eintritt und alles boykottiert, was geht. Und sich dann doch irgendwie geschlagen gibt, bis am Ende eine Katastrophe passiert, dies alles umwirft. So denkt man. Denn Golden Throne startet direkt mit der ersten fetten Überraschung. Nicht, dass dies eine sehr große Rolle spielt – denn in diesem Buch geht es viel mehr um die Entwicklung von Emilia. Etwa die erste Hälfte des Buches beleuchtet facettenreich, wie es Emilia zwischenzeitlich ergeht. Mal ganz abgesehen von den Alpträumen, die sie seit der Katastrophe plagen, der stets in ihren Adern kriechenden Angst vor den Monarchiegegnern und dem auf sie lastenden Druck, die Rolle als Kronprinzessin auszufüllen, macht auch die Schachmatt-Situation mit Carter ihr das Lebe nicht gerade einfacher. Als dann Lady Octavia noch anfängt, weiter Druck aufzubauen, muss Emilia sich fügen. Denn wenn man bereits eins gelernt hat: Mit Erpressungen, Drohungen und Deals kommt man im royalen Leben weiter.

Und so fängt Emilia an, offizielle Aufgaben zu übernehmen, etwa Eröffnungen oder Empfänge. Mit ihrer gewohnt zynischen Art kommentiert sie den verrückten Zirkus – aber macht zugleich auch langsam eine Wandlung durch. Denn durch die Tätigkeit merkt sie, wie viel sie dem Volk geben kann und wie viel Liebe das Volk für seine Royals übrig hat. Anders als in Band 1 geht es bei Golden Throne weniger um das innerhöfische Gezanke (wobei Emilia hier und da auch gut aneckt, etwa als sie sich ihre eigenen Beschützer zusammensuchen möchte, denen sie vertrauen möchte) und auch Intrigen sind eher rar gesät – bei all dem, was aus dem Programm steht, ist das aber sogar ganz angenehm, da das Buch sonst schnell überladen hätte sein können. Viel mehr steht Emilias innerer Kampf im Vordergrund, ihre persönliche Entwicklung. Sie ist zwar immer noch nicht in diesem neuen Leben angekommen, aber sie versucht mittlerweile, das Beste daraus zu machen. Und hier muss ich sagen, dass mich die Autorin wirklich abholen konnte. Es ist keine von 0 auf 100 Entwicklung, aber eben auch kein „Emilia ist ein Sturkopf“-Gedöns. Die Autorin schafft es, eine starke und zugleich greifbare Geschichte zu entwickeln, die Emilia nicht ihre zynischen Kommentare nimmt, aber sie zugleich reflektieren lässt, welche Erkenntnisse sie zunehmend gewinnt. Absolut mitreißend, beeindruckend und dennoch wird so nicht die Fahrt aus dem Buch genommen.

Doch auch die Spannung kommt nicht zu kurz. Vor allem in der zweiten Hälfte des Buches überschlagen sich die Ereignisse auf eine unglaubliche Art. Aus Band 1 schwillt ja immer noch der Konflikt um die Monarchiegegner, die Frage nach dem Palastbrand und weitere Problemfelder sind zwischenzeitlich dazugekommen. Dem muss sich auch Emilia in Golden Throne stellen. Und sie geht einen Weg, der wieder beeindruckt: Sie will Aufklärung, sie will Insights und sie will vor allem nicht in Watte gepackt werden. Dennoch gehen auch an ihr die Ereignisse nicht spurlos vorbei und man merkt, wie das alles sie belastet. Es ist ein Spagat, der ihr vieles abverlangt und der gleichzeitig für den Leser enorm interessant ist. Und dann, in einem Moment tiefster Zufriedenheit, trifft der endgültige Wahnsinn ein. Diese Schlüsselszene des Buches, so fernab von der Liebesgeschichte und der Frage, ob ein Rollkragenpulloverkleid angemessene Kleidung für ein Date ist, ist so erschütternd und bedrückend, dass ich beim Lesen Gänsehaut bekam und fassungslos war. Und so gipfelt das Buch erneut in einem fiesen, schrecklichen Cliffhanger, der noch viel heftiger und einschneidender ist als der von Band 1. Und mit ihm bleiben viele Fragen, deren Antwort Band 3 hoffentlich bereithält. Fragen, die weit über das „was nun“ hinausgehen. Und eine Grundkonstellation, die Raum für enorme Möglichkeit mitbringt. Ich bin mehr als gespannt, welchen Weg die Autorin gehen wird.

Für die Liebesroman-Fans wird auch Golden Throne wieder eine kleine Enttäuschung sein. Carter und Emilia haben zwar vereinzelte Momente miteinander, aber die Liebesgeschichte bleibt stark untergeordnet. Vielleicht leidet sie hierunter auch ein wenig, denn je mehr sie in den Hintergrund gerät, desto schwieriger waren für mich einige Themen und Entscheidungen nachzuvollziehen. Durch das Werben zahlreicher Verehrer, die Emilia allesamt abblockt, kommt natürlich noch ein wenig Würze in die Geschichte. Aber es ist mehr als offensichtlich, dass Emilia und Carter das große Finale sein sollen. Die Frage ist nur, wie der Weg dahin führt. Und da die Autorin so viel mehr Augenmerk auf das Drumherum und Emilias Werdegang legt, denke ich nicht, dass da noch sehr viel kommen wird. Aber ich bin ehrlich: Stören tut es mich überhaupt nicht. Denn die Forbidden Royals Reihe ist für mich jetzt schon viel mehr als eine Cinderella-Story. Und Emilia? Die braucht für mich keinen Kerl an ihrer Seite.

Mein Fazit

Golden Throne ist eine wahnsinnig gelungene, intensive und mitreißende Fortsetzung. Die Geschichte um Emilia fasziniert mit Einblicken in das Leben am Hof, einer starken Protagonistin, hochspannende Twists und zugleich viel Gefühl. Die Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die zu etwas gemacht wurde, was sie nie sein wollte, aber bereit ist, die Rolle auf ihre Art zu übernehmen. Eine entwicklungsstarker Folgeband, der Band 1 in nichts nachsteht und mit einem großen Knall das Finale einleitet. Ein wahrer Lesegenuss und ganz sicher nicht die Cinderella-Story, die man erwartet.

Tja was soll ich sagen - wenn mir Band I schon super gefallen hat, dann war Band II einfach nur genial und fantastisch. Julie Johnson hat sich selber einfach nochmal gesteigert.

Ich kenne viele Reihen, wo entweder keine Steigerung drin ist oder nur ein Teil der Reihe wirklich stark ist oder der erste nur genial und der Rest nicht überzeugend. Doch selten hat man es, dass bei einer aufeinander aufbauende Reihe die Bücher von Anfang an genial sind. Nun könnte man meinen, ich solle den Tag nicht vor dem Abend loben, der dritte Band ist schließlich noch nicht gelesen - dennoch.

Ich finde die Art und Weise wie Johnson an die Geschichte und die Entwicklung der Charaktere ran geht einfach nur genial. Ihr Schreibstil ist etwas weniger "poetisch" gegenüber Band I aber immer noch wirklich toll und einzigartig.

Es lässt sich sehr leicht lesen und dennoch ist es alles andere als anspruchslos! Besonders spannend finde ich die Entwicklung, die Emilia durchmacht. Sie hatte sich immer mit Händen und Füßen gegen die Pflichten einer Prinzessin gewehrt und auch wenn die Worte von Carter vielleicht nicht die sensibelsten waren haben sie dennoch bewirkt, dass Emilia nicht nur über das nachgedacht, was von ihr erwartet wird sondern auch über das, was sie bewirken kann. Sie ist erwachsener und reifer, gefestigter im allgemeinen geworden. Dennoch hat sie ihren grundlegenden Charakter nicht verloren - das war zumindest mein Gefühl.

Spannend finde ich auch die Dynamik zwischen Emilia und Cartert - dieses knisternde, nicht greifbare und dennoch unübersehbare finde ich einfach absolut genial eingefangen von Julie Johnson.

Mein geheimer Favoriten-Charakter ist jedoch Chloe! Ich finde sie einfach nur liebenswürdig und sensibel. Sie ist für Emilia da und steht an ihrer Seite. Ihre Probleme mit Drogen und Alkohol sind natürlich präsent dennoch nicht so extrem, wie Owen es in Band I dargestellt hat.

Tja und das Ende? Puh...

Es war nicht ganz so schlimm wie bei Band I aber dennoch - ich zähle die Stunden bis Band III endlich in meinen Händen ist und ich die Geschichte weiter lesen kann!!!

I absolutely devoured Torrid Throne and I am hardcore struggling to find the words to describe how awesome it is right now.

I laughed, I cried, I swooned. Yes, this is a romance, and ohgoshyes do I love Carter Thorne, but I love Emilia Lancaster starting to really grasp her own identity, too.

We saw in Dirty Halo that Emilia is a badass bitch. She handles being thrust into the the life of a royal with somehow the perfect balance of snark and grace, and I loved watching her become an even better version of herself in Torrid Throne. She's so human and flawed... but also just a downright good person that you want to see succeed.

Torrid Throne IS book 2 of a trilogy and it does end with a cliffhanger. It's a logical, dramatic, something's settled for now cliffhanger with a kickass closing line, but boy do I wish I could pick up Sordid Empire right the frick now. You definitely want to read Dirty Halo first, too.

Man, is Sordid Empire likely to be a doozy, given all the dangling story threads we're left with at the end of Torrid Throne...

Side note: Julie Johnson is one of very few authors for whom I'll intentionally sign on for a cliffhanger like this and read as novels release-her stories are worth the temporary heartbreak between installments when she goes for a duet or a trilogy. The novels within the trilogy are on the shorter side, but we get a complete piece of the story in each one, and I appreciate that she writes standalone novels, too. Sometimes you have to shake things up!

It is not often that the second book in a trilogy is better than the first, but this is the case with Julie Johnson’s Torrid Throne. We start off a month after the end of Dirty Halo (which for the record was amazing!) and find Emilia struggling in her new life and dealing with nightmares of the disastrous coronation. As Carter astutely points out “it’s the hardest thing in the world —figuring out who you are and refusing to apologize for it. Being yourself in the face of great opposition.”
I find this is the main theme of this book. Although there is a lot of angst and drama with Carter (who is yummy as ever!), the main focus of this book is Emilia finding and accepting herself and her new world. I found this very refreshing and loved how even though she rose to the occasion time and time again she was still human and we got to see her frailty and vulnerability. There is heat, anger, and a ton of passion with Carter and the sparks between them make you yearn for the final book where we can only hope that they can find their HEA. Sometimes second books can be fillers and setups for the final book in a series, this book however, not only expanded on the first great story, but really flourished into an intense, riveting look at a girl becoming a woman before becoming a queen.

HOLY SHIT. Das war ja mal so eine Achterbahnfahrt 🫠 obwohl ich das erste Buch dieser Trilogie nicht gelesen habe, hatte ich keine Probleme in die Story reinzukommen. Die Tension zwischen Carter und Emilia war heftig gut beschrieben und ich hab’s GELIEBT.
Das Ende ist heartbreaking omfg. Wie sie einfach Carter aus ihrem Leben verbannt und alle aus dem Schloss entfernt ist etwas extrem meiner Meinung nach… ihre Reaktion auf das Schweigen Carters konnte ich jetzt nicht so nachvollziehen was mich etwas sauer macht 😤
Der letzte Satz: „Ich bin die gottverdammte Königin“ ist aber POWERFUL und ich muss unbedingt das nächste Buch haben 😩

Ich muss sagen, mir hat Band 2 jetzt sogar ein wenig besser gefallen als Band 1 🙊🙈 die Charakterentwicklung und auch Handlung fand ich gut und besser als in Band 1

Auch die Szenen zwischen Emilia&Carter haben mir sehr gefallen und waren super gefühlvoll...das Einzige was bisschen doof war, es waren 1. zu wenig Intime Szenen.. so 1-2 mehr hätten dem Bich gut getan 😅 und 2. manchmal wollte man sie schütteln, denn wie immer ist in solchen Büchern ein Haufen Drama, ansonsten hat es mir echt gefallen....hätte ich echt nicht gedacht🙊

Es wird auch gleich mit Band 3 weiter gemacht 🥰

some of y’all bout to be real mad at me but it must be said; this has been a weak read. Nothing majorly happened until the very end, which was predictable. I dunno but Emilia and Carter annoyed me, even though I loved them in the first book.
I hate to write this review, since I love every other book I’ve read by Julie but I guess my expectations were just too high for the second installment.
I am sure Sordid Empire will be much much better.
This one just felt like an in-between book🤷🏻‍♀️

- for Henry to wake up and take back the throne
- for Octavia to get what's coming to her
- for Emilia to find a little happiness, seriouslyyyyyy this girl has been through some t r a u m a and she needs an HEA.

Zu Anfang hatte ich kleine Schwierigkeiten reinzukommen, da ich mich nicht mehr richtig an Band 1 erinnern konnte, aber danach ging es dann richtig ab! Ich bin nur so durch die Seiten geflogen und hab mit Emilia das ganze Drama miterlebt. Für mich persönlich war es genau die perfekte Emilia - Carter - Balance, sodass jetzt ganz viel Potenzial für Band 3 herrscht!

No matter how many Julie Johnson books I’ve read, they never fail to surprise me. The plot is always well thought out, and the characters have depth in a way that isn’t just superficial if that makes sense. I find that very often when an author tries to add dimension to a character’s personality, it’s just there and doesn’t make an impact on their personality.

“My voice breaks. “Two months ago, I was a regular girl. Just… Emilia. No titles, no expectations. Just a college student with purple hair and straightforward plan for the future. But now…” I tilt my head up at the stars to keep from crying. “I don’t know who I am anymore. I don’t even recognize the girl looking out through my eyes in the mirror. I’m holding myself together with staples and glue, but every day those rips get a little wider and another piece of the person I used to be tears off and blows away. Soon, there wont be anything left except shiny new pieces that Simms and Lady Morrell seem determined to cobble together into the shape of a proper princess.”

Carter is just....everything. For once it isn’t the hero walking away, it’s the heroine and I really appreciate that. As for Emilia, she’s everything I ever want in a heroine. She may have started out unsure, but she grew into a strong woman who is powerful and a badass in her own way.
