I read this every Lent and have started to notice that I definitely appreciate the insights from some of the contributors more than others. And that makes sense since it's written for so many people. My only wish would be that the Church started including the actual verses at the beginning of each day's reflection so that we had a chance to read it first, then reflect. Even if they only included the citation first, that would work because I could look it up before reading the reflection. It feels quite backward. You typically get the scripture before the homily ...
During the time of lent I always start my morning with the readings of the daily mass. I generally purchase 2 additional companion books with daily reflections. Some are very short with reflections of various authors. This companion provides a little more meat into the daily readings adding a prayer and suggested penance of the day. These vary from reaching out to someone in need to thanking someone who strengthen your faith.
MAGNIFICAT publications provides a complete devotional and meditation guide for Lent including Stations of the Cross, prayers for all occasions and various litanies. The biographies of the many contributors is included in the post index. It has been a valuable component of my Lenten journey for years.
We're all used to Lenten reflections, let's be real. You wouldn't be here reading this review if you weren't seeking something new. Well! Good for you, bc you've found it. One of the things I really like is each day there's a suggested penance.
