A good read! “Speech-Act” is obviously Ward’s passion project, and I was impressed by how he managed to helpfully integrate it into a Doctrine of Scripture without making it sound like it was the key that all past theologians missed. Ward’s application sections on preaching and our basic attitude to scripture in personal reading were refreshing and helpful too.
It would have been great if the bits on the clarity of scripture and tradition were less restrained - they felt almost apologetic, focussing on what sola scriptura etc. isn’t rather than saying how great it is that scripture is clear!
I have just finished this book in a small pastoral reading group. Discussing each section has been greatly beneficial, because it's very densely written and (in my view) quite academic in the main. The chapters are long and not always easy to follow.
The content seems very thorough, but it's not a book I would recommend to the average pastor or lay preacher.
