Loveda Brown has decided to stay in Idyllwild. She's searching for a place to call home and this tiny mountain hamlet is just what she needs. Of course she'll hang on to the hotel for Elizabeth's sake but also her own. So she has hired a fancy city lawyer to liquidate the property in El Paso so she can afford to keep the hotel. Mr. Conrad arrives with a mountain of paperwork. Loveda asks Mr. Lindley to look it over for her while she helps entertain Mr. Conrad and the resort guests, a pair of newlyweds and dodging a troop of Boy Scouts. Before Mr. Lindley has a chance to look at the contract, Mr. Conrad is discovered on the veranda with his throat slashed. The sheriff has a new deputy, an admirer of Sherlock Holmes who comes with brand new fingerprinting technology. If they can find the murder weapon, they'll be able to fingerprint everyone and find the killer. The newlyweds move into Loveda's hotel. As she wonders how she's going to feed them, a cook shows up to answer Loveda's ad. Between them they should be able to entertain the fussy couple but there's trouble in paradise already and the groom returns from the saloon with a black eye. Everyone is relieved when the Boy Scouts stop running around causing trouble and head up the mountain with their leader. While they're gone, an anxious mother arrives searching for her son and she has a tale to tell that may point to the killer. Mr. Lindley has been keeping secrets too and not all is what it seems. Can Loveda stop getting into scrapes for once and protect herself and the hotel guests?
This story is Loveda's best adventure yet. It's a nice mix of comedy and mystery with a light touch of romance. Loveda's scrapes and the ADHD ten-year-old Boy Scouts make for entertaining reading. While I suspected the killer, I wasn't 100% certain I was right. I had the motive wrong. I stayed up very, very late to finish this story. The conclusion to the mystery isn't quite satisfactory. The detailed descriptions of this town make me feel like I am there with Loveda. I can see it in my mind's eye. The period details feel organic as well and not shoehorned in. I know it's 1912 from the fashions and the mention of Titanic.
I really like and admire Loveda. She is plucky, brave and her heart is in the right place but that is sometimes her problem. She should be a better judge of character by now but she's still learning. She tends to trust the wrong people and mistrust the people she should be trusting. She'll learn not to be so naive after this adventure! Her mishaps are laugh our loud funny but it's hard watching her struggle. I was surprised she got back in touch with Mr. Gross in Boston. He didn't seem to wish her well and his wife certainly didn't. I was worried her reputation from Boston would follow her but it doesn't seem to have carried over. Only her governess skills have come with her and come in handy.
The locals are quirky. Carlos Peyote, the blacksmith, is mistrustful of everyone. He is proud to help the sheriff on occasion and a bit prickly. Loveda likes and trusts him. He seems to have her back. Carlos is not good with children and is out of his element dealing with ten ADHD 10-year-old boys. The sheriff still doesn't truly trust Loveda. He thinks she brings trouble to town. I think it's Mr. Lindley and his resort that bring trouble to town. And to be fair... trouble was already there when Loveda arrived. Mr. Hannahs certainly blames Mr. Lindley for everything. There is no love lost there. We meet Mrs. Hannahs, a practical farm woman who seems less cranky than her husband. Mr. Hannahs does seem to care for Loveda in a fatherly way and worries about her, being a woman alone. He keeps out of most of the investigation, only revealing important information a little late in the story.
Mr. Lindley isn't such a bad guy. He's a businessman first and foremost and wants his resort to succeed. He's a master of PR to get his resort to succeed! He seems to be a ladies' man but doesn't take advantage. He loves flirting and flirts with Loveda but she knows he isn't serious. They're business partners nothing more. Mr. Lindley is surprisingly progressive when it comes to the treatment of his staff. I like him quite a lot. John, however, does not seem to like Mr. Lindley. I am sensing he's jealous of Loveda's growing closeness with the wealthy gentleman and I can't stand a jealous man. State your feelings clearly. Loveda values plain speaking and says what she means. He may be confused and not ready to confront his feelings. They have an easy relationship normally and tease each other a lot. I like him but he's cynical about women and marriage and I am not sure he's right for Loveda in the long run.
Loveda meets a whole lot of new people in this story, from a city lawyer, to maids to lovebirds to rambunctious Boy Scouts. Charlotte is a maid at the resort. She is practical, level headed and intelligent. Charlotte has been promoted to receptionist because she's so capable. I think she is a good new friend for Loveda. Molly, the remaining maid, is more in the background busy doing her job but she's hiding secrets that could help the case. The two women are fiercely protective of a new maid, Hattie, as they bring the youngest woman to Loveda's hotel. Hattie is very young and the resort is a little too much and dangerous for her right now. She's hardworking and tries to do everything she's asked. Karine Halvorsdatter Torkleson is Loveda's new cook. She takes a chance and arrives from San Francisco to work in Idyllwild for little money. She's tough, strong and an amazing cook. She seems to take to Loveda right away and is protective of her new employer, being older and more worldly wise than Loveda.
Mr. and Mrs. Fontaine are honeymooners. They arrived on Mr. Lindley's white coach with plenty of luggage expecting a quiet honeymoon stay. The bride is massively snobby. She is rude, dismissive and horrid. She makes demands and expects everyone to follow them. This lady is an absolute shrew even to her own husband. After a week of marriage she's already accusing him of things. Did he do what she said? It was dark and there were several people on the veranda going in and out of the hotel. What if she made up the accusation? Perhaps she married him for his money and she wants to divorce him and get a settlement? I think she's up to something the way she carries on. Then they moved to Loveda's hotel and the situation gets worse before it gets better. They do seem very much in love and I don't think an annulment would be easily granted even if she can prove fraud.
Mr. Craven is a slick city lawyer. He's said to never leave Tucson and has nothing nice to say about Idyllwild. He comes recommended by Loveda's former employer, which makes me suspect he's not all he seems. He's mooching off Loveda who can't pay until Billy's estate is settled. He went out to smoke a cigar and ended up with his throat slashed. That is such a gruesome crime and whoever did it had to be a practiced killer, which makes his murder even more chilling.
The Boy Scouts are a riot. Now I know why my nephew enjoys Scouts camp so much. This pack has ten 10-year old boys and they all seem to have ADHD. They're eager to earn badges and become Eagle Scouts but no one seems to know what any of that entails. There didn't seem to be a process and progress yet in 1912. You can't do it willy nilly the way these boys do or overnight. The kids cause so much chaos. They're kind of cute though in their enthusiasm. Their troop leader (it seems to be a very informal troop right now.) can't handle them. He has no more knowledge of the great outdoors than the kids do. The boys are constantly escaping and running off causing trouble for everyone in Idyllwild. Only at the end does someone figure out how to handle them. Mr. Peabody takes the kids on a hike up the mountain overnight without taking a local guide. That sounds like trouble to me. The Scouts of today learn orienteering and their leaders instruct, guide and lead. Is Mr. Peabody new at this or is he not what he seems? His alibi isn't exactly air tight.
Deputy MacDougall is newly hired and eager to show off. He greatly admires the stories about Sherlock Holmes and wants to apply the forensic techniques of Sherlock's stories now they actually have the technology to do so. Loveda loves the stories too and is fascinated by fingerprinting technology. MacDougall enjoys mansplaining and patronizing. He doesn't take direction very well and thinks he should be involved in everything. He's jealous when the sheriff takes Carlos, who is very much needed in this situation. MacDougal doesn't seem to be an effective guard either. I don't quite trust him.
I like what Mary Keen stands for. She's a women's suffrage activist and probably what will be known as a socialist. She's very progressive and believes women are fully capable of doing anything a man can do. When she sees the Boy Scouts, she wants to start Girl Scouts. However, her personality is abrasive. She tries to bully Loveda into buying groceries at her husband's new store and won't take a breath long enough to say she already has an arrangement and probably wouldn't listen anyway. Loveda doesn't seem to like Mrs. Keen or have thoughts on suffrage. I didn't like that. Mrs. Keen bonds with Loveda's newest guest, Rose Alden, the mom of one of the Scouts. She is actually Toby's aunt but his mother's dying wish was to have her sister care for her son. Rose certainly loves Toby and cares for him. She worries a lot and seems to be the only overprotective parent, or the only one who heard about the murder. She's a modern woman who votes, smokes and rides in a motorcar. I wanted to like her but I am not a mother and I can't sympathize with her. I began to wonder if she was telling the truth because she seems a little unhinged towards the end of the story.
This was a great story and I am very eager to see what happens next!

Loveda Brown has inherited a tiny hotel in 1912 Idyllwild, California... well, sort of, as the owner lives in the woods and Loveda is a ‘squatter’ who takes care of the place for the mysterious lady. As a cosy, fun, historical Western reminiscent of reading the dime-store novels of the early 1950s set in the Wild West, you know you are off to a rollicking ride when the book starts off with the main character dangling from a rooftop with her knickers showing as the stagecoach shows up with guests. As to why Loveda is dangling from the rooftop and what ensues after her lawyer comes to the hotel, well, let’s just say there is a lot of page-turning excitement filled with a whole gaggle of Boy Scouts (whose mischievous encounters and spying eyes actually help Loveda in the end – from rooftop to rooftop), a pair of pompous newlyweds (a husband with a secret, and a wife with an even bigger secret), intolerable suffragettes, and a love interest – all colliding together in this little hotel. Sounds harmless, right? Not so fast... there is a murder and a kidnapping, and Loveda is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery and find the culprits, along with the secrets behind the crimes. And to think, all she wanted to do was to run a small hotel in this town she calls home.
Loveda is a spunky, corset-wearing, gun-toting main character, very likeable, whose gritty wit, courage, and detecting skills grab you right from the start and keeps you intrigued right to the end; and this story is such a refreshing and delightful diversion from the meaty historical fiction which is more common in the genre – a quick, fun mystery that you can zip through in an evening. For anyone who likes the old B-Western shows and movies of the 1950s such as Gunsmoke and The Lone Ranger (except with a woman lead), this is could easily fit right into that category, and if there was ever a comeback of those type of shows, this book and the others in the Loveda Brown series might make a very enjoyable and entertaining TV show.
Here are some of my favorite excerpts to give you a taste of this snug Western:
Legend asserted that Chief Tahquitz resided beneath the peak with a rattlesnake and a condor for company and shook things up once in a while when he got bored. Thankfully, I had never experienced a California earthquake, but the Cahuilla tribes in this area had long known that, after Tahquitz killed his sweetheart, he succumbed to an evil spirit that locked him deep in the mountaintop as penance. The Cahuilla left years ago, but the fire spirit lived on.
Resorts rarely had murder on the activity list. - (this made me laugh out loud - ‘rarely’?)
And in a serious moment, a moment when Loveda is reprimanding the naughty Boy Scouts for thinking life is like a penny novel - “Real life isn’t glamorous. It’s dangerous. You should be ashamed of yourselves for taking it so lightly.”
The fall should have hurt so much more than it did. Between my terror and the fact that I couldn’t breathe in properly for a good scream went a long way toward my becoming a hero of epic proportions in the eyes of the Boy Scouts.
Electricity had its place in the world, but it was no substitute for a moonlit night.
And last - “I don’t know what it is, but I am destined never to wear a clean, pretty frock.”

History and Mystery.
There really is an Idyllwild and some of the characters are fictionalized versions of real people But most of the story is pure imagination. Tunnel weaves historic events into her fun cozies. I am loving this series. I grabbed the first two books in a book club kindle promotion but I will definitely be reading the rest. The kindles have a link at the end for a free prequel exclusive from the author's website.

Great read!
Wonderful story! I really enjoy how easy it is to slip into the setting and enjoy the telling of this tail. It has so many twists, many times I asked if I truly was seeing the foreshadowing. I also want to say great job on grammar and spelling. Out of two books I've only seen one misspelled word. Fantastic!

This is a fun read with a mystery, a plucky heroine, numerous potential suitors, a troop of boy scouts, and a struggling hotel in 1912 California. Loveda just wants to find somewhere to settle down, and she thinks she has discovered just the place. Soon pandemonium ensues, however, and she has to rely on her wits, her courage, and her luck to make it through. The story kept me turning the pages, wondering what new challenge Loveda would have to overcome next. A highly enjoyable novel!

Smashing great story! Hits a home run! Loveda Brown is a woman for all seasons, all mysteries, and all sorts of shenanigans! I gotta meet this woman! (Though I can't imagine courting her without a six-shooter.)

Her lawyer has come to have her sign papers so that she can acquire the money from the sale of her ranch back in El Paso. However before things can get rolling, the lawyer ends up dead.
Meanwhile, a newlywed couple and a group of boyscouts ends up at her hotel due to the hotel they had been staying in is under investigation.
And chaos erupts. A LOT of it!
I found this to be a really good and fun....yes, fun....mystery and I think the scouts have got to be my favorite characters in this one. They are funny and serious in turns and I really appreciated the comedic moments. Especially up on the roof 😂

Chegou a certa altura que o enredo virou uma confusão tremenda e um pouco exagerada, mas deu para dar uma boas gargalhadas. Recomendo esta série e vou continuar.

Witty and intriguing story with lots of twists and turns. Keeps you hooked until the end. Interesting and entertaining characters. Good read.

1912 at the hotel owned by Walt Lindley a murder occurs but who would want to kill him. Idyllwild has also been invaded a scout group and a couple of newly weds. Will the mystery such as it is be solved.

I absolutely loved this book. I laughed out loud, I got teary eyed and I cheered Loveda on throughout the book. I could hardly wait to read it after reading the first Loveda. Kudoes to you, Ms Tunnell. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Brown is up to in your next novel!

Another crazy fun book from Jolie! The boyscouts and their antics add much to the story. So many side stories to follow , who is stealing things, who is in love with who, what's up with the new man in town, what's the cooks story...

The author has a strong female character in Loveda. She’s not a simpering woman and seemingly effortlessly solves the murder mystery.

This was interesting, and little hard to follow at some points but I’m glad I stuck with it because it all becomes clear in the end (obviously). And the end is kinda funny. I was definitely giggling. Mimi Bilinski does a great narration for this series. And the background audio quality is better in this book.
