Before I met Caroline, I had never dreamt of achieving anything beyond a bicycle and probably a tin-roofed slum. Now I was thinking of cars, bungalows, servants and whatever else Caroline missed by changing sides.
But for a poor house-boy who has fallen in love with the beautiful daughter of his civil-servant master, the path to riches is not easy. In desperation Chuma moves from petty crime to a world of gangsters. It is only after much heartache on both sides that the two lovers are united.
Across The Bridge is such an awesome novel. I posted it on my what's App status and everybody in my contact list was asking me if I had the PDF version of the book. Apparently they read it once and want to read it again. I have read it so many times, but I didn't have a copy so i disappointed them. M. Gicheru, please write something like this again, it helped us escape homesickness back in high school.
The thriller voyages through a sea of love verses class. Chuma, a hopeless house boy falls in love with his harsh master's daughter Caroline. Things go out of, secret love, hand when the school girl becomes pregnant and Chuma runs away. She follows him. How will he cross the social class bridge to her's? How will he handle the wrath of Kihuthu, the master?
After a second reading, this is what I come up with:- it is a great love story. Apart from the obvious tautology that is mapped everywhere in the book, the story flows like a stream, is unpredictable, suspenseful, and intriguing.
Sexily taunting, romantic and raunchy. I enjoyed every bit of it; also got some ideas to put into practice. The book is an embodiment of how pop literature was in Kenya in the 70's and 80's, too bad it was banned and today we fill the lacuna it left in the history of our country. Contemporary writers would be better off had they found a solid ground in pop literature.
Although the plot is quite simple, the fast pacing especially towards the end made for a thrilling read. It had to be read in one sitting and the feeling afterwards is pleasant. I miss the characters already. The MC was particularly well fleshed out.
I read this book at a very young age as a gift from my dad. Caroline and Kisinga if those were the names, had a great deal of a love story given that Caroline was from a rich family...
They say to read is to live vicarious and as an ardent reader I really loved Mwangi Gicheru's writing style where his word danced effortlessly and left an indelible mark on me perhaps how society/the milleu we thrive in tends to perceive certain individuals more superior as opposed to others. And perhaps how many Readers are willing to drop down and walk over this iron walls of society and maybe perhaps be free to mingle with others regardless of social, cultural and religious status even if it's in a remote way. A masterpiece.
Class is a determinant in the long-term relationship goals. A story of love cultivated outside one's social and economic class sails through. The pressure that comes with it allows crime in order to meet financial needs. Being through the worst, love is rekindled after tasting thorns that come with it.
Write a review (optional) I had never thought of leaving Kahuthu's compound but there was no way I could stand before that brute to explain why his daughter Caroline was pregnant... I just loooove this book... I felt like swallowing my brother alive when he told me the book had been stolen.
Mwangi Gicheru brings out how hard it is for one to cross the social bridge. There is a wide gap between the rich and the poor that not even love can close. This captivating novel takes us through the journey of unforbidden love that almost leads to death.
