The protagonist is a doormat who just lets her ex girlfriend walk all over her, falling over herself to help a woman who treats her like trash. The bisexual ex is also a doormat, but only with men; she's lonely, so she settles for a relationship with an awful one and puts up with all his sexism because she is desperate for a hubby and kids. She keeps leading the protagonist on while being incredibly condescending to her ("aw, remember when I held your hand and kissed you like this? But I guess I grew up, got wiser and now want REAL love") and also rubbing in that she's got a flat with her bf and will soon have a wedding + baby with him. All while knowing that the protagonist loves her; since she's not happy with her man, she uses her ex from high school as an emotional crutch while also showing off that she's got a "normal" life. The husband is one-dimensional and evil, he's only there to be an antagonist.
We're supposed to like the ex girlfriend because she is afraid of loneliness and her beloved is abusive to her. The fact that she doesn't deserve abuse doesn't change that she is pretty shitty to the protagonist. I don't see her actions as romantic, but as selfish. It's the typical "lesbian relationships as healing, use your lesbian ex for comfort when your hetero romance fails" cliché in manga form.
It's tiring that so many romance stories between adult women focus so much on the bloke that the bi women of the pair is inevitably dating/marrying (and she also ends up cheating on him more often than not). Literally why. You can make a story about two adult women without recurring to this trite trope so often.
The only saving graces are that the protagonist is an actual lesbian, and that her friendship with another ssa woman + phone calls talking about homophobia are actually interesting. Plus, the bisexual ex-girlfriend and her husband do have some scenes that are pretty good at highlighting sexism (that one where he's like "you will get hairier during pregnancy, right? Idk if I'm into that" followed by that panel showing his hairy legs by the side of her shaved ones is pretty good).

Viele ernste Themen dabei, so viele glückliche und unglückliche Momente perfekt eingefangen.
Könnte etwas weniger mit Klischees um sich werfen, aber insgesamt sehr süß. :))

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the story thus far. The unrequited love but still doing everything for her trope is a bit too strong for me. But I will read on and see what Volume 2 holds.

I adore the unconventional character art in this manga! The art was certainly a highlight, and makes it worth a read. In terms of the story, it’s a deeply toxic situation all around — I haven’t yet decided if that’s a feature or a bug. We’ll see how I feel by the end but I’m hoping for the best.

So far so good! Drawings are amazing and story is moving slowly which I like, we learn to know the characters, and I love them (expect the husband of course he’s a dick, sorry for the spoiler). Actually surprised at how adult this is, in a very good way. First time I see real bodies drawn in a manga and not being sexualised either. It’s just bodies. Can’t wait to read the next volume!

Not the cute GL that reviews hyped it up to be.
I had no reason to root for the couple as most of the story consisted of midori leading on maki only to return to her husband, who only exists as a caricature of an abusive man that makes a woman "turn to lesbianism". A tired, annoying trope.
Despite clearly not being happy in this relationship, midori still rubs it into her ex girlfriend's face, telling her on their first meeting - after years of separation - that she's pregnant, because "that's what happens when he cums inside" (ew). At no part in this did I feel like midori would be a good girlfriend to maki, deserving of her repeated sacrifices.
After getting details of her ex's sex life and even helping her choose a dress to marry him in, maki continues being a doormat and accepting being midori's relationship therapist that she can turn to when her ideal hetero marriage goes sour. Where's the romance in this? At some points I just wanted to scream at maki to grow a backbone.
To top it off, they decide to be together as midori is pregnant; which would be fine on its own, I'm all for lesbian moms, but now they're linked to midori's abusive ex husband forever. Oh, and the kid hates being raised by two women, as we see it in the epilogue.
I appreciate stories that touch on the realistic topics of heteronormativity and how the expectation to be with a man drives women away from our true desires. But I'm tired of the same recycled, arguably lesbophobic tropes that this manga is ripe with - especially considering how often it gets recommended as a cute, sweet love story. There are countless movies, shows, books etc that have already been made featuring a woman using another woman as a rebound for her failed hetero relationship, for example. Or leading the other woman on while continuing to see a man.
At least make it seem like the two love interests are actually *in love* with each other, not just using your ex / being used by your ex because you're lonely.

Irgendwie ist die Geschichte anders, als ich dachte. Nicht schlecht, einfach anders als meine Erwartungen. Maki ist echt süß, aber es ist schwer zu glauben, dass sie 10 Jahre nicht über eine Person hinweggekommen ist. Midori … ach Midori … das ist ein schwieriger Fall. Ich kann sie verstehen, nachvollziehen das sie bei Tonoide bleibt kann ich aber Null. Und sorry dude, aber du bist ja sowas von eine Red Flag. Auch ihre Arbeitskollegin ist sus, v. a. wo sie die beiden jetzt gesehen hat. Ich freue mich für Maki, dass sie mit Midori zusammen sein kann, aber es ist alles ganz schön verzwickt. Definitely keine fluffy Geschichte, da ganz schön viele hartw und tiefgründige Themen angesprochen werden (ungewollte Schwangerschaft, das Gefühl glücklich sein zu müssen, toxische Beziehungen, patriarchale Strukturen, nicht anerkennen von nicht-heterosexuellen Beziehungen, Neid, etc.). Werde die Reihe auf jeden Fall beenden, da ich intrigued bin, aber ich glaube, da kommt noch ein Sturm auf.

Habe lange einen Bogen um diesen Manga gemacht, da mich das Titelbild nicht wirklich angesprochen hat. Aber nun bin ich froh, doch hinein gesehen zu haben, da mir der Zeichenstil eigentlich sehr zusagt und eine nette Abwechslung zu sonstigen GirlsLove Mangas bietet. Inhaltlich hadere ich noch etwas mit der Geschichte...ja, eine Hauptfigur wird von ihrem Verlobten sehr schlecht behandelt, ja, er ist ein sehr misogyner, verwerflicher Charakter. Setzt sie sich in irgendeiner Form zur Wehr? Nein. Denkt sie etwa an Trennung? Nein. Sollte somit die Lösung für die Misere darin liegen, dass ihre Ex-Freundin sie aus diesem Dilemma rettet? Definitiv auch Nein. Ich fürchte aber die Handlung wird diesen Verlauf nehmen, bin mal auf den Folgeband gespannt.

A girls love josei about two ladies in their late twenties who dated in high school accidentally meeting back up and kind of rekindling old feelings.
This is so good. I know nothing is gonna work out well for these two but I am glued to my seat, desperately hoping that it will. At the very least I hope the blonde lady's husband is shot out a cannon.
The art and panel layouts are great. There's a particularly lovely moment where a character is squatting beside an inside out sock left by her husband. Kind of feels inspired by Aki Irie, Takako Shimura, and Yuhki Kamatani, or like a modern interpretation of Moto Hagio and Ryoko Ikeda.

Run away with me, girl focuses on 30 year old women who reconnect after having a relationship ship in high-school that was broken off due to societal pressures. Volume 1 is quite heartbreaking as these pressures to live a "normal" life as a Japanese citizen affects these women in their current lives. The art is beautiful and so unique. I flew through vol 1. Looking forward to 2 and 3.

Story:
Zehn Jahre sind vergangen, seit Midori ihre Mitschülerin Maki abserviert hat – obwohl die beiden während der Highschool ein unzertrennliches Paar waren. Den Verlust hat Maki noch immer nicht überwunden und als die beiden zufällig wieder aufeinandertreffen, sind die Gefühle für Midori sofort wieder da. Dass die schwangere Midori kurz vor der Heirat mit einem teils sehr ruppigen und nicht immer fairen Mann steht, verhindert nicht, dass die beiden Frauen sich wieder näher kommen. Doch hat Maki überhaupt eine Chance wenn Midoris großer Traum die Hochzeit mit einem Mann und eine Familie ist?
Eigene Meinung:
„Run Away With me, Girl“ der Mangaka battan erschien im Original nur in digitaler Form. Der Verlag Kodansha veröffentlichte die bewegende, realitätsnahe Geschichte um Midori und Maki in vier digitalen Bänden – diese sind in Deutschland beim Carlsen Imprint Hayabusa ebenfalls als eBook zu 4,99€ zu haben. Zusätzlich erschienen die 16 Kapitel in gedruckter Form in zwei großformatigen Bänden zu je 12,-€. Der Erstauflage des Mangas liegt eine Bonuspostkarte bei.
Die Geschichte um Mai und Midori zieht sich über mehrere Zeitebenen, denn die Highschool-Beziehung, die sie miteinander geführt haben, ist gerade für Maki Dreh- und Angelpunkt. Mit fast 30 wohnt sie noch zu Hause, studiert und hat keinerlei Beziehungen. Das liegt vorwiegend daran, dass sie an Frauen interessiert ist, es jedoch nicht wagt, sich gegenüber ihrer Familie zu outen. Für Midori scheint es besser gelaufen zu sein – sie hat einen Job, einen Mann und erwartet ihr erstes Kind. Doch Glück kann man nicht erzwingen, was Midori schmerzlich erfahren muss, auch wenn sie an dem festhält, was sie sich aufgebaut hat. Als dann Maki wieder in ihrem Leben auftaucht, wird es für Midori nicht einfacher, denn es zeigt ihr deutlich, wie gefangen sie ist.
Die Mangaka battan erzählt die Liebesgeschichte zweier Frauen, die beide in ihren Leben gefangen sind und nur schwer einen Weg hinaus finden. Es geht um die Suche nach Glück und einem Platz im Leben, um Liebe, Freundschaft und Einsamkeit. Die Geschichte ist hierbei sehr realistisch und emotional in Szene gesetzt – und beleuchtet alle Figuren gleichermaßen. So sind einige Kapitel aus Makis Sicht erzählt, andere aus Midoris, auch Midoris Verlobter bekommt ein wenig Tiefe, denn battan gibt auch ihm in einigen Szenen eine eigene Stimme. Dadurch verliert man zwar ein wenig den Fokus, der deutlich auf den beiden Frauen liegt, dafür begreift man seine Gedanken und Gefühle etwas besser, den auch er ist nicht einfach nur unsympathisch, weil er dramaturgisch den beiden Frauen im Weg steht. Insgesamt hat battan eine sehr realistische, lebensnahe Geschichte zu Papier gebracht, die weder kitschig nach unrealistisch ist, sondern sehr greifbar wirkt und viele Probleme anspricht, die Homosexuelle noch heute in Japan haben.
Die Zeichnungen sind zu Beginn ein wenig gewöhnungsbedürftig, denn weder Maki noch Midori sind die klassischen Mangaschönheiten, haben ihre Ecken, Kanten und kleinen Makel. Das fällt jedoch nicht negativ ins Gewicht, da es sie greifbarere und authentischer macht. So ist Midori trotz ihres frechen Aussehens und der Wildheit, die sie optisch verströmt, mitunter sehr unsicher und weiß nicht, wohin sie im Leben will, Maki wirkt zumeist sehr unsicher und schüchtern, kann aber durchaus auch etwas mehr aus sicher herausgehen, wenn sie die Gelegenheit bekommt. battan hat einen sehr weichen Zeichenstil, der durch schöne Hintergründe und liebevoll ausgearbeitete Details besticht. Er passt gut zur ernsten und emotionalen Geschichte.
Fazit:
„Run Away With me, Girl“ ist ein gelungener, emotionaler und tiefgründiger Manga über die Liebe zweier Frauen, die auf der Suche nach Glück sind. battan erschafft eine sehr realistische und authentische Geschichte, die durch gut nachvollziehbare Charaktere und schöne Zeichnungen besticht. Wem die klassischen Lesbian Mangas zu kitschig und rosarot sind und eher auf der Suche nach erwachsenen Geschichten und Figuren ist, ist bei „Run Away With me, Girl“ genau richtig. An interesting beginning to the story, and a poignant examination of how lesbian relationships are viewed as lesser than. I thought the characters were nuanced, even the abuser, and I want to see where this is going.

I was expecting a somewhat wholesome wlw story and instead I got... This 😭
The main character needs a spine. Her ex-gf, who left her to find "real love" (because lesbians aren't real, obviously) uses her as a doormat and she just lets her. No apology, no understanding, she just rubs it in her face that she's in a real relationship with a man and has her happy ending of husband and kids waiting for her, but then uses her when things aren't going well.
I get that ex-gf has her own shit going on with her shitty fiancee (who I would like to punch in the face so much it's unreal, not even his backstory to explain it makes his behavior okay), but she just accepts the misogyny, sexism and abuse? Without doing anything about it or even saying anything???? Her just laughing everything off is her character I guess but it just pisses me off.
I'm not even going to get into the side characters and their terrible personalities. I'll read the rest of the series cause I'm curious to see if there is any character development (and I hope to see fiancee guy get slapped at least once), but it's not off to a great start.

I don't understand why every lesbian I know, in both real life and fiction, always seems to be held in the past with their ex/ their greatest love/ their worst heartbreak/ their very first same-sex crush/ the one they never dated once/ the one that got away, etc. It's been 10 years, and the FL still "can't run away from the memory of her". Luckily, they got a happy ending, but in real life, I'm afraid not. Is that WLW culture?
