really liked chi ta wei's sci-fi short stories from this collection, some familiar tropes but they always had capacity to surprise me (replicant wives... space station KTV... doing dishes at parties on mars...). standouts were 《战争终了》、《火星的月亮比较圆》、《去年在马伦巴》、《数位时代》and of course the novella 《膜》 "the membranes," which was so good in its original language too! i don't know if i experienced the original any differently from the english translation, maybe would have felt differently if i had read the original first. one thing i did notice was the lack of pronouns in some of the short stories (something you can do in chinese) which did some interesting and ambiguous things w gender
some of the other stories, which are abt various forms of queer life in taipei, were more obscure to me, maybe less satisfying overall. but i also read them earlier in the book and understood less, i would like to revisit at some point!
this was the first chinese book i've finished since high school lol!
