Absolutely love this book. I enjoyed that it guided you through the spiritual side of yoga along side learning the poses. The week by week guides are so useful and I know I’ll go back to it again and again. I was already journaling, but this took my writing to the next level and really helped me to reflect. Thanks so much!
“And to many people, a spiritual life is nothing otherworldly but living with a sense of purpose, belonging and wholeness”
Blending the ancient wisdom of yoga, meditation and mindfulness, this book encourages a holistic and individualised approach to self-care. Designed for any level of ability this guide safely teaches you how to enter and exit poses both within a sequence and as an isolated pose.
Yogi’s are guided through an approachable 10-week plan of yoga routines, simple meditations, breathing techniques and affirmations. With over 50 yoga poses and 20 sequences, each week introduces a new collection of poses including hip openers, forward folds and yin poses to empower you to build the yoga practice that works for you.
The author is clearly a wealth of knowledge. This book packs so much information into an easy-to-follow way that is somehow still a pleasure to read. I found myself relating to a lot of the content as well as to the authors personal accounts.
Reading this book feels like discovering the secret to enjoying exercise. Since beginning this book I have genuinely gotten back into yoga (we will see how long it sticks) and it does make me feel stronger, calmer and more peaceful. I’m beginning to recall yoga sequences, enabling me to take my practice anywhere. For me this is not a read and forget. I plan to keep it on my bedside table so I can refer to it regularly.
Not really one for the spiritual stuff in the text but if you are, it is pretty entry level and accessible. Illustrations are great and helpful that there are variations for the poses for inflexible people such as I
A great book for the beginners to yoga and the more experienced. The Illustrations are well done and easy to follow. Has lots of extras and the ten week yoga plan is excellent. A must for your bookshelf.
A wonderful book, both regarding content and design. Hobbs sets the perfect tone to give beginners as well as seasoned Yogis an understanding of what Yoga is beyond the Asanas (yoga poses) most of us know. Being not only a yoga teacher but also a psychologist, Hobbs looks at the spiritual yoga elements of Yama and Niyama—yoga’s lesser-known ethical fundament—through a very modern, research-based lens that’s always surprisingly tangible (as well as completely incense- and doctrine-free, which can be quite decisive for those among us who struggle with the more esoteric interpretations of yoga philosophy).
I love Hobbs’s gentle voice throughout the book, her way of asking simple yet meaningful questions, and of guiding her readers through the 10 week mindfulness journey with a distinct focus on encouraging self-awareness and self-care. She manages to explain yoga poses with an easy-to-understand precision I have found nowhere else, via succinct texts and beautiful illustrations. For me, the combination of yoga practice, breathing exercises and journaling was both new and exciting as well as incredibly satisfying and soothing.
Knowing very well you’re not supposed to count your chickens before they hatch, I still have a hunch that this gem of a book is going to be my find of the year.
