Daughters of Eville #6

Of Gold and Greed

Rate this book
High in goblin-infested mountains lies the ruins of Ter Dell, the lost stronghold of the dwarves. Evil lurks beneath layers of ice and broken stone, buried in a vault of gold, hungering for the day that man’s greed would see it unearthed.

That day has come.

For I am Rheanon, one of the adoptive daughters of Lady Eville—and I’m trapped in a web of deceit with the King’s deadly blades-enchanted beings that guard the king and hunt those with magic.

Beset by enemies, I must use my gift of alchemy to forge a sentient blade with ancient knowledge and a sharp edge. I needed a powerful weapon. I got a giant pain in the axe.

6th book in the series! Such a lovely retelling! Loved this earnest & smart FMC! All the sisters are so different yet all wonderful. I enjoyed their interwoven stories. One of my favorite in the series.

A Rumplestiltskin retelling. Filled with magic, curses, and romance.

After Rhea's mother sends her to her old home. She meets a mysterious man named Kash. He disappears during the day and returns at night. But the king's blade is looking for her and her magic. She finds herself soon posing as a servant in the castle and realizes that the king's greed is a huge source of the kingdom's problems. The kingdom and eventually the world is in danger, and Rhea might be the only one that can save it.

Oh, I really loved this book. The romantic chemistry was great. The plot was fun and full of twists. Lots of mystery to the story as well. In general, I've really enjoyed this series so far and this one hasn't left me disappointed. I know there will be at least one more in the series. Although, I am hoping there will be one for the mother as well.

Some violence and cruelty. That's about it for content warnings.

Nooooooot what I expected. This one honestly did not feel like a retelling. It took me a little longer to get through this one because I was really trying to take it all in. Rhea’s magic is very cool and I like her character a lot. I love Kash and Rhea’s love, it’s making me a hopeless romantic even more than I already am.

Rumplestiltskin’s character was soo funny and wasn’t what I thought it would be. Such a cute story with lovable characters.

I’m just gonna say it…. This is THE best one yet! I know I say that about ever single book in this series but I can’t help it. Hahn has woven her magic and gifted us with a book filled with curses, gold, love, and greed. The is not your typical tale of Rumple Stiltskin. It. Is. SO. Much. Better!

Rhea is by far the most relatable of the seven sisters. I completely identified with her social awkwardness. Her quirkiness was on par for an introvert. Especially around dashing mysterious men that show up out of nowhere in the middle of the night that could render her speechless.

Speaking of dashing mysterious men, Kash checked all the tall, dark, and handsome boxes and then some! He really gave Rhea a run for her money. His teasing banter made for some good humored fun. Especially when he left Rhea all flabbergasted.

But the gem of it all is the great Rumple Stiltskin himself! He gave me such Flynn Rider vibes and I am here for it! I absolutely adored him! I can’t forget Smol the fire salamander. If ever I had a familiar I’d definitely want a fire salamander.

to be honest i probably would have never read this book based on the description alone. it’s not my cup of tea and i know i would’ve never picked it up had it not been apart of a series. but this one was so good, id say it placed 2nd right after of mist and murder. i will say though the romance definitely felt a little bit rushed, like…they fell in love only after meeting each other for a few hours, the way their relationship develops makes up for it but it was just kinda ridiculous tbh, i probably could’ve found another point further in the book to start their romance. i loved every single character and the world building on this one was insane. the author doesn’t drag it on but just enough to paint the picture and make it interesting. AND MY GOD the plot twists i just have to point it out every single time because at this point im going to read every single book she ever came out with just for the plot twists. even though some of them can be predictable is absolutely does not take away any excitement from the story

I really liked the spin on Rumpelstiltskin that played out here. I've read all of the Daughters of Eville and was honestly starting to get a little bit bored. To me, this book went in a new direction after the *hopeful* final defeat of the villain that dominated most of the books, this was a nice departure with a unique villain.

Rhea was a strong protagonist, albeit the "innocence" was played on a little too hard. The romance was a bit stilted in my opinion.

Overall, a good read! Back to looking forward to the final book. Curious to know how Lady Eville managed to collect 7 daughters that would have such an impact on 7 different kingdoms, so I hope that is revealed as part of Honor's story!

This was the best  version of Rumpelstiltskin I've read.  This is book 6 of the Daughters of Eville series.  It had me laughing and crying throughout the whole book.  Jesse Vilinsky did an awesome job bringing this Chandra Hahn book to life, giving each character their own unique voice.  The ending to this love story had me both laughing and crying too.

Greed

This is book 6 of a series (of 7, #7 to release June 2021) and is best if read in order, but I believe it can be read on its own without a problem.

Before reading this book, my favorite of the series was between Of Glass and Glamour and Of Thorn And Thread. But now this has completely overtaken that struggle for the top spot! I was a little confused at first with how quickly we (we being both Rhea and myself) met and fell for Kash, but as we continued, I was enthralled by the story. If he had been introduced later it just wouldn’t have worked as well!

I loved how Rhea was small but mighty (both in magic -at first- and in stature) and loved books 📚😍. And when she set her mind to something, she made sure to try her hardest to complete the task the best she could. Like the quest her mother sent her on…

Like most of her sisters before her, Rhea is sent by her adoptive mother, Lady Eville, to another kingdom to stop evil from taking over the kingdom and it’s people. Each daughter was trained since they were young in magic in order to do their mother’s bidding. But Rhea had difficulty mustering her magic at home, and preferred working in the forge with alchemy and the bit of magic she could grasp.

Now she is on her way to the kingdom of Kiln to discover and defeat whatever has taken up residence there, causing a darkness to overtake it. And her mother assures her that her magic will be stronger in Kiln. (Needless to say Rhea does not believe that little tidbit of information, she’s always had only a smidge of magic).

When she arrives, Rhea discovers people acting oddly (and are they holding items of gold?) and a dwarf her mother knows tells Rhea of what is happening. Gold appears to be corrupting the minds of the people of Kiln, causing them to act out irrationally. He suspects that it comes from a vault deep in the mountains but has yet to discover how the cursed gold has left it’s resting place when no one should be able to survive entering.

Though she is told to stay out of sight to avoid being captured by the king of Kiln (who is after people with magic for some reason), she leaves her mother’s childhood home in order to learn more about a mysterious visitor who intruded on her. Then she finds herself exactly where she shouldn’t be, in front of the king. How can she discover how to remove the curse from the people before it’s too late if she is stuck in the castle? And why does the king have so much of the cursed gold? Why does he want even more gold?

This was a fun twist on Rumplestiltskin with Rhea playing the part of Rumplestiltskin (though someone else carries the name) and prisoner to the king!

4 SHIMMERING STARS - I thought this was an interesting spin on the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale. Sometimes retellings can be quite dull, but this was fresh and unexpected. I wouldn’t mind reading some of the other books in this series.

What a wonderful woven tale full of so many fantastical elements: dwarves, goblins, curses, princes, fallen kingdoms, mysteries, secrets, evil kings, spells, and talking weapons. I loved it all. Especially getting to see some past characters who were just delightful make another appearance. I won't say who but I'll give a clue, "Do you have any butt?"

It was a fantastic adventure. The sparks between Rhea and Kash from the get-go kept me turning the page. I never get tired of fairytale retellings.

I have followed this series since the beginning and for some reason, this one took me longer to read. It started off slow for me, but once I got into it, I was hooked.

Rhea hasn't been very prominent in the past books, only really showing up in the end of the previous book to help out her sister. She is the bookworm of the bunch and that I could immediately relate to. I loved that she was book smart and loved working with her hands. She wasn't afraid to get dirty.

Kash was incredible. I have been partial to Dorian (the hero in the second book) with the only one that I liked enough next to him was Liam (from the fourth book). But I have to say that Kash could be in close running to Dorian for me. Rhea's breath catches every time she Kash looks at her and he finds great amusement in this and frequently comments on it. But he doesn't come across as a player or a heartbreaker. His past is mentioned where he is a hunter and he preferred to spend his time doing that instead of caring about other things. I had the big reveal figured out long before it happened, but the predictability didn't take away from the story for me.

I still feel like the death of Allemar in the previous book was too easy and I kept waiting for him to come back in this book. It just seems too easy that he's gone.

As with all the other books in this series, the sister that will be in the next book comes to help the heroine so Honor came towards the end of this book. It was nice to get to know Honor a little more who has been the most elusive sister so far. She's barely mentioned or seen, but there are some things we find out about her in this book which makes me really excited for the next and final book in this series.

Overall, this book was exactly what I needed. I've been on a romance kick and haven't devoted any time to fantasy books. While this one isn't an epic fantasy like HP or LotR, it was a nice little escape from reality. If you love fairytales, fairytale retellings, cute and clean fantasy reads then I definitely recommend this book.

Rhea Eville was the Alchemist, not the most talented sorceress but a good one in earth magic. She always thought she would stay in her little town house tower in her studies where she can experiment anything and everything. Until it was time for her turn to go fix a kingdom just like her other sisters did. She faced many challenges along the way trying to find out who the mysterious man was, what curse lay on the kingdom, and how to find herself throughout the whole story.

This book was literally golden, I loved this book so much probably my second favorite in this whole series. I loved the plot and the lessons this one had about how you shouldn't be so selfish and greedy. I loved Rhea she's just a funny bookworm who is also a badass in earth magic and alchemy like who wouldn't want to be her right? And oh my gosh don't even forget about Kash🥰 my new favorite book husband in this whole series. He's everything to me, also his brothers are my new favorite trio, Kash with his charm, Spencer with his comedic moments, and oh my gosh Damon🥵. Anyways this book had so much humor I couldn't stop listening to it.

3 Stars~

I really really liked Rhea as a character. She was super interesting and did a lot of thinking not just about herself but how she could use her skills to get herself out of trouble and other issues that arose throughout the book.

Her meeting Kash for the first time was a little strange and very weird, especially with him shrouded in mystery the way he was from his first introduction until they meet again later. Rhea has a lot of funny quick thinking moments throughout, thinking that a book would be the way to disable the intruder along with how she interreacts with the other characters.

The love story between Rhea and Kash was a little awkward, it just seemed like she was so awe struck with the fact of who he was that she was interested, fully a love at first sight between the two. Which actually worked in her favor as she constantly wanted to make sure Kash was ok and that things worked out between them and his other brothers.

The story was a little hard to follow as there were many characters and a lot of the major ones only showed up here and there for split seconds of the story, making it hard to follow who was good, who was bad and who was actually on the side of doing the right thing.

I enjoyed this book as a candy bar book. Meaning that you know exactly what’s going to happen but you still enjoy the read. I didn’t love that Kash and Rhea fell in love after spending a few hours together. It felt rushed but I can’t be too upset because I wanted them together just wish it had been more of a challenge. I feel like the middle parts of Chanda’s book are always the best because she can tell her story. The beginnings and ending always struggle though. All in all a good book. I do recommend it and am definitely planning to read the next. I’m excited for this one because I feel like it’s going to be way different than the rest.

3.5 I love this series and it DID get some audible chuckles from me, so I am disappointed I can't bring myself to rate this one higher. I would round up, but IDK. Was it better than The Cruel Prince, which I rated 3 stars...?

I think this one is a bit of a miss for me, unfortunately. Like, I LIKE it because I like this author a lot, but something needs to be refined a bit more. Ironic coming from the one all about ores 😉

I think the knights/blades are a little confusing and inconsistent and seem to only switch between the brothers and the blades when it's convenient for the story, rather than the story having to work around the rules. I know it was supposed to be a day/night thing, but either I am really bad at keeping track of the time of day in this book, or that was more of a "suggestion."

I am a bit confused by the side characters and who is good/who is corrupted. There were a lot of new side characters that we meet. The gold corrupts everyone, but characters that I thought were trustworthy turned out to be held for trial in the end? I must've missed something. Which- normally I would totally concede to, but I actually REALLY tried paying good attention in this book.

I really like Velora but why is she here...? Like, I really really like her- one of my favorite characters. But I couldn't really understand why the mermaid got sent up to the far north to help? I thought there should've been a bit of a better justification on that one.

I really like Kash a lot, very Flynn Rider vibes. But I do NOT understand their relationship... it has like NO foundation other than "he's hot." The Daughters of Eville have a tendency to fall hard and fast, but this one took the cake. She does at one point acknowledge that it is really a school girl crush and that her mother would be disappointed or something, but then still proceeds to marry him in the end after confessing their true love for one another? Mmmmm I needed more. He spent half the book under possession.

I was disappointed to not get more from Lady Eville herself. This is her homeland. We see her house and get a bit of lore for her, but I thought there should've been a little more inclusion of her here. Did Rhea even fix the broken mirrors, or was that just a direct result of Greed? They didn't really address it.

I really liked this snowy bitter cold north full of hearty people and dwarves and goblins. I thought the difference between being freezing in the snow in the beginning and boiling in the lava in the end was really fun contrast.

I LOVED Rumple the axe. He was so fun.

Also, missed opportunity to have a really magnificent dragon. Was this a *conceptual dragon? I was confused by the state of Greed in the end.

Retelling- I thought this was a fun take on a Ruplestiltskin retelling. It had many of the steory elements, but they were all jumbled up and spread across different plot points and characters. I kinda wanted it to align a *little bit more. This was less of a retelling and more of a "rearranged telling".
