Secrets and broken promises. Questions that need answers. Drive can overcome Destiny.

Gus is thrown back in action, still reeling from the sacrifices needed to protect the manor. He’s been thrust into a leadership position he feels ill-equipped to handle, and finds himself in a race to find answers. The fraying threads of his past are unraveling, and one mistake can mean they’ll be lost forever.

He teams up with ‘The Crew’, a singular group of supers assisting Gus’ father – Tempest – as he seeks to right a wrong from the past… but it may be too late. The Crew is tasked with finding the hybrid’s secret headquarters, hacking impregnable A.I.‘s, and making deals with criminals all while in enemy territory.Powerful forces are watching Gus and want him as a pawn in their global game of conspiracies against all supers. Against his will, he has become the tipping point everything is balanced upon.

It’s all in a day’s work for the average super, but Gus isn’t sure if he can rise to the occasion, or if the pressure will crush him.

Too much side-story

I really enjoyed the first two books especially with the self progress and growth that came with Gus, however this felt like it was half Yuki character arc and a lot of self pity angst Mc who I thought gotten pst most of that at the end of book two. We went from having Gus working hard to train and understand powers to being a mostly highlighted side-character. It really feels like the author just wanted to write about this badass tech wizard who actually fights anime stole instead of just hacking.... cool concept but did it have to be displayed so much in a story of another character.
Also did Gus’s Nick completely revert to a generic version of the second iteration by the end of the book, gone was wise old guru to a general talking ai assistant, and where was Daphne during all this the conversation between the Nick and Daphne was such a prominent thing back in book two.

I still believe that this is one of the most unique super hero stories ARC I've ever read. This time Gus' father arrives with his loyal trustworthy companions calling themselves the crew they're on a quest to not only find, but if possible save his mother. A woman that Gus believed to be long dead. It also seems that Gus has more demons then he ever knew he had to work out. And as frustrating as Gus can be at times making some purdy dumb decisions I still come back for more... So even though I wanna just walk away, I don't. I come back wanting/hungering for the ending and wanting the the next book.
And again Carl Stubblefield has added plenty of pop-cultural references... see if you get this one "Paul and Storm", I about busted my gut!
And Travis Baldree was there narrating Gus' story through thick and thin.

Here's a quote I found, that amused me.

"Dark and brooding it looked like Gotham and Bladerunner version of Los Angeles had an ugly baby."

Inside != Outside

It’s well understood that I judge myself by what’s on the inside, but I can only judge others by what’s on the outside. And the main character of this book doesn’t like what he sees on the inside. It was a fun ride, but also frustrating in all the ways he got in his own way.

This double-length book took Gus on quite a journey. And the story obviously isn’t done yet.

Small quibbles on several story jumps that didn’t make sense.

Very excited by the twist

I am so excited by how the author had expanded this story and the overall reality it exists in. I was starting to think that the series would end up puttering out with an over powered hero, but I'm glad I stuck with this author and I'm very excited to see what challenges are brought in the rest of the series!

Book three

Mistakes: I didn't find anything wrong. A well written book.

Plot: Rescuing his mother and fighting bad guys. More of the sinister plot behind the scenes is revealed.

Characters: The MC keeps backsliding and feeling sorry for himself. It's getting old. Was happy to see side characters getting fleshed out.

Love the story , love there characters. MC I feel like needs to be talked to with a cup of coffee and have him relise he could have just leeched the bad guy since he was obviously a super and K.Oed him.
Keep making them I am excited to see the growth

good

It’s an interesting series with some good characters and action but I don’t know why it’s called henchman. Sure he was one at the start but quickly turned into a superhero. Still good stuff.

Man, this was at times a frustrating read (listen). The Bojack rift especially, but there was some fine action and decent growth by all who mattered. What a quality antagonist as well. 👍🏾👍🏾

I was actually disappointed with this one. The previous two books established some necessary character growth and introspection, capped off with some key insights and decisions. This book resets that all to square one so the MC can go through the same growth and self-actualization. It was frustrating to undo all of the growth and personal changes just to insert some more drama. There were also some plot holes and the main plot did not make a lot of sense. The plot advancement felt disjointed and unfocused. If there is a fourth book, I hope it comes through cleaner and with more clarity in the writing.
