As I have an avid interest in language, I tend to pick up just about any book I see at my favorite book review site that has to do with it, including learning foreign languages. Growing up in California, Spanish was certainly in the air! While I don't speak it aside from a few words and phrases, I have enough knowledge to be able to parse what somebody is saying... or at least get the gist. This book is broadly divided into a large section on fundamentals—like basic words and phrases, a little on pronunciation and grammar, and numbers—and a second section divided into words and phrases on a particular theme, like travel, work, food/restaurants, and even dating! The author claims this book is all you needed to get started speaking Spanish. The author overstated that, as he certainly needed to give more clues about pronunciation here and there (like how to pronounce the all-important vowels or strange-looking combinations of letters). The grammar section needed a bit more work as well, as it seemed to mostly be about verb tenses, including irregular verbs. I would have liked to have seen more about how to structure basic sentences; you mostly have to pick that up yourself. The chapters on the individual themes were a lot of fun, and the author certainly included an interesting mix of phrases! Although the title of this book states that you will learn how to speak Spanish in 30 days, the author doesn't give you a roadmap about how to do so. Rather, it is split up as I stated above, with no sort of 30-day guideline. All in all, while this certainly is not the only book you will need to learn Spanish, it is one that could give you some helpful hints and phrases.
I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
