Back in early 80s dad brought a big pile of books from Raduga Publications. All Russian and Soviet literature. Children’s books, biographies, fictions even educational ones. Even if I wasn’t even 10 years, I read most of them with lot of enthusiasm. This is one of them among others.

This carries 14 short stories from pre USSR and USSR era, going back as far as 1800s. When I first read them, I wasn’t grown enough to understand the depth of them but stories like One Man's Destiny (මිනිසෙකුගේ ඉරණම) and The forty First (හතලිස් එක් වැන්නා) Old Izergil (ඉසෙර්ගීල් මැහැල්ල) really caught my heart. "සුනිල්වන් ඇස් ඇති මගේ යක් පැටියෝ, නැගිටින්න", Those words got carved into my brain the very first time itself. As I grew up, this book, among the others became family treasures. The literally value, the rare nature and the memories attached to it, undoubtedly gave an immeasurable value to them.

Dadigama V Rodrigo was and still is my favorite Russian translator. His language is so beautiful, flawless and so easy going, once read, at least one sentence will stay with you. Anyone could read and understand his writing. The language truly speaks to one's heart and stays there. I’m not sure whether there’s another one like him, I haven’t seen any in my lifetime. I don’t know how he chose the stories he translated but they all were brilliant ones. Most of the stories in his discography were never translated from Russian to any other language but thanks to him, we had the chance to read them.

With this round, I've read this book nine times. Still the taste of the first reading hasn't gone sour, still the beauty hasn't faded. Feels like I'm reading it for the first time again. I'm sure this book will keep me company for many more times to come.
