It is in fact a collection of two novellas.

1. பாசத்தீ - The longest of the two novellas. 4 stars. It is a straight forward story about how possessive love can wreck havoc in one's life. There are three main characters. Ragavan, his wife Parvathi and Parvathi's mother Maarithaai. Maarithaai had become a young widow when Parvathi was just a 4 month baby. So it was for Parvathi that Maarithaai spent her entire life. Parvathy was her only reason to hold onto life. Now that Parvathi is twenty years old and that she is married to a person from a nearby town, Maarithaai can not bear the absence of her only child. She wants her daughter to be with her. She does not even realize what havoc it would do for the marital life of Ragavan and Parvathi.
Simple theme. But it is emotionally presented in this novella. There are no villains. Love, excessive love is the villain. Thus the title - பாசத்தீ (Fiery Love).

2. செய்தது - 5 stars. Once again a simple theme. But the presentation is superb. A street with many houses. Except three Muslim houses all the other houses are occupied by Hindus. They all live amicably until the gory event of demolition of Babri Masjid happens. There is tension. The Hindus feel bad and they feel awkward to face the Muslim brothers. But then, they realize that it was not them that destroyed the Masjid. They were not proper Hindus. Later there are lots of bomb blasts in the wake of an election. The Muslims are targeted. Once again the situation becomes embarrassing for both Muslims and Hindus to meet. But then once again they all realize that it was not the doing of proper Muslims. Why should the relationship suffer because of an unruly person's action?

A wonderful story for the present times. Melanmai had already written it in 1999. Salute to him.
