Taming the Waves by Inksteady is the second book in the College Series, and I’d argue it’s an improvement over the first one, Chasing the Sun in both storyline and structure. The story is all about Elora Chin Valencia, a Psychology student navigating a toxic family environment and intense emotional struggles, including suicidal ideation. Moreover, the story also features her relationship with Troy Jefferson Dela Paz, which will ultimately leads to heartbreak and a confrontation with her past traumas.
Upon reading her books, I noticed the author has a habit of rushing the conflict, like when the story reaches its peak the transition feels abrupt. One moment I am at the climax, and the next thing I knew, the problem is already solved. I have saw the same issue in the first book, and for me, it reduces the emotional impact of the climax, which is unfortunate because that’s one of the most important parts for judging a story’s effectiveness.
I noticed some inconsistencies with the characters that confused me at times, and parts of the plot that feel predictable, especially the interactions between Irina, Luke, Troy, and Chin. One question kept bothering me tho: how did Troy find out what happened to Chin? Who told him? I was hoping this would be explained in his POV, but all I remember is that Vina pushed him to find out, yet, it wasn’t clear who actually told him the details.
With that being said, I must commend the author for handling mental health issues so thoughtfully. This is very timely and relevant in present time, so, this book might help the readers on what and how to handle every situation and also understand more the importance of mental health to every individual. The book educated its readers about mental health disorders, and honestly, it moved me in ways I found myself tearing up for Chin and for others who face the same struggles as her. I hope everyone who needs one will have their own Troy—a person who becomes their light in their darkest days and helps lead them toward healing.
Lastly, the early scenes between Chin, her friends, and Troy were a delight. They’ll make you laugh and swoon at the same time. Taming the Waves is definitely worth reading; it is a fun ride, it will even let you experience every emotions you have never felt before.
