Sloane is trapped in a life he wishes he could leave. He has been made to hate the side of him that makes him different. He is a dragon, and as much relief and strength he feels in his dragon form, he has to hide it, even from the one person who should be supportive of him. His relationship with his mother is a contentious one, she abhors the dragon in Sloane, but he soon learns that the way his mother treats him has much deeper roots.
When his grandfather shows up, Sloane finally has a chance to learn about his heritage, about the dragon that lives within him. He is able to leave his mother behind and begin to embrace who he is. The time he has with his grandparents gives him a glimpse of a future he never thought he could have.
Sloane leaves to discover the world and find his place in it. His journey brings him to a farm in the Fifth Realm, where he meets the feisty, independent Eislyn, who tends the sheep on her family’s farm. She knocks him off his feet and he finds the desire to explore is squashed by his desire to know this woman more. Eislyn is everything his mother wasn’t, but can she accept his dragon?
From the world of the Dragon King Series, meet Egan’s parents, and see how his father learned to break the chains of the past.

so sweet and short.. and i loved it.. it was wonderfully written.. sexy.. funny.. interesting.. kept me curious and happy. i enjoyed it a lot and cant wait for more.
I loved reading about Egan's parents, Sloane and Eislyn. Their story was good too. Normally I am not a huge fan of novellas because they are too short and usually leave me feeling unfulfilled; however this story was different even though it's a novella it left me feeling completely fulfilled. Also baby Egan was just so very adorable.
“Strength isn’t only found in the physical. It comes from within, it comes from the heart.”
“Strength isn’t only found in the physical. It comes from within, it comes from the heart.”
I loved this novella so so much! This book is about Egan’s father Sloane. We meet Sloane when he is 19 and still living with his mother. That woman makes me want to scream because of how much she makes Sloane ashamed of who and what he is. He hides all aspects of his dragon from her and that just breaks my heart for him. When his grandfather, his mom’s dad, shows up he finally realizes that he’s not alone and where he inherited his dragon nature from. Deciding that he needs to leave and go with his grandfather to meet his dying grandmother and to find out more about himself is, I believe, the only decision that he could make. After spending some time with his grandfather he leaves to travel and find somewhere to settle. His plans were to pass through the Fifth realm and continue on to the Sixth realm. That is until he meets and ultimately falls in love with Eislyn. She helps him heal in ways that no one else could. She loves him for who he is and loves his dragon just as much. I was happy to read this story and to get to know Egan’s dad since he is no longer alive in the other books. It’s easy to see why Eislyn fell in love with Sloane and why Egan became the man, and dragon, that he is.
I finished this adorable little novella last night and while the Hubster was snoring next to me, I kicked him in the shin because he doesn't love me as fiercely as Sloane does! This morning he woke up and told me his leg hurt!
Don't let the fact that this novella only have 92 pages fool you! This just mean that all the feels are crammed in there and when you open up this book all those feelings pop up and smack you in the face... I don't know why someone was cutting onions the entire time while I was reading.
If you've read Debbie McQueen 's othet books in The Dragon King series you would know that this novella is about our favorite dragon's parents and how they met. You would also know that *spoiler* isn't in the other books because of obvious sad reasons.
This is the backstory I didn't know I needed. I am so glad that we got to see how Daddy Sloan and his Eislyn met and fell in love. Since the moment their eyes locked on each other for the first time, I just knew this was going to be one epic love story. Their banter is legendary and their wedding had me weeping!
Getting to know Sloane also gave me insight into Egan's personality because of how he was brought up! Sloane was no stranger to pain and suffering but he was determined not to make the same mistakes as his parents and tried his best to be the best version of the father no one ever taught him to be.
In the other books Eislyn is so quiet and timid and I really didn’t expect this badass firecracker who looked a dragon in the eyes and actually commanded him! But since I knew what happened, it was kind of obvious why her personality changed so dramatically and that just trampled my heart into the ground one final time! Pain and grief can change who you are and Eislyn's pain echoed in my soul.
My favorite part of the book was where Sloane explained to Egan that he was special and that he was exactly who he was made to be and THAT ladies and gentlemen is what we should teach ALL of our children!
What a sweet, emotional little novella about Egan's father, Sloane, and how he came to love and understand his dragon and his soulmate, Eislyn, Egan's mother. We are taken on a brief trip through his world, his experiences, and the joy he felt beside his wife and son.
I loved the messages this book evoked. I loved how honesty and communication played a big part in this story.
It just breaks my heart knowing what lies ahead in the future for them. But this is a perfect interlude in the Dragon King Series as we eagerly await book 3.
Another absolutely beautiful story from the Dragon King series by Debbie McQueen, beautifully narrated by Talia Carver! This is the story of Sloane and Eislyn, Egan’s parents, and how he came to be. Sloane’s life is all about survival. His mother looks at him with animosity and seems to hate what he is. He can’t help that there’s a dragon inside him, and she never ceases to remind him that this should be kept hidden. Sloane is lonely and has little hope for a better life. Then a mysterious man shows up at his home, and turns his world upside down. After deciding to find the sixth realm, with its tales of the good young King Rodick, Sloane starts traveling there. Along the way, in need of lodging, he’s pointed to a house in the fifth. And there he meets the fiercest and most beautiful woman he’s ever seen: Eislyn. These two are beautiful together, and very reminiscent of Egan and Raiden with their unconditional love and support. Eislyn not only doesn’t reject Sloane’s dragon, she absolutely embraces it. And we get to meet a teeny tiny dragonette Egan!! An absolutely lovely addition to this series 💜💜
“She was the sun in a dark world. She was the hope I never dared to have. She was the reason my heart beat.” I’m so happy we got this insight into Egan’s parents, especially Sloane. My heart hurt for the cycles of pain and anger he went through before finding, the acceptance, love and family he always deserved. But out of that sorrow came something beautiful and wondrous. Watching him discover everything amazing about himself and what he’s capable of was incredible. I only wish I could see Sloane and baby Egan in dragon form in real life so I can nuzzle their noses.
Having already read the two previous dragon legacy books by Debbie, I was thrilled to be given a glimpse in to how Egan’s parents met and fell in love. Eislyn is already one of my favourite characters, she emulates everything a parent should be, and is a beautiful example of a proud mama bear to her darling dragon. Seeing a father being as unconditionally accepting and embracing his gender diverse child was so incredibly heart warming. I loved this book and cannot wait for talons of love to be released! 5 shiny dragon scaled stars from me
I am a huge fan of the first two books in this series and was overjoyed to see that this one would tell us about Egan's parents, particularly Sloane. I am a big fan of stories where a character learns to accept and then love parts of themselves that they have been taught to reject. Watching Sloane find Eislyn, get to know her and then reveal his true self and be accepted and loved was a delight.
A sweet peek into the life of Egan's parents. I have to thank the author for not chewing my heart with this novella, because this beautiful story had all the opportunities to become a tear-jerker, and instead, it filled my heart. I love the beautiful story between Eislyn and Sloan, and knowing how happy they were together, makes me admire Eislyn even more. So yes, I believe my heart did break a little.

I received an ARC of this book for my honest review. This was a great story about Egan’s father Sloane. It was nice to see a glimpse of his father and how his mother and father loved each other. Sloane came to love his dragon and taught Egan to love his dragon side also. I love this series and looking forward to reading the next one.
I loved this book as much as I love the Dragon King series. I love how Debbie is able to create a short novella and give you all the details you want and need!!!!! I wish all these books went on forever. Such easy reads that get my heart super involved.
This was a great short story about Egan's father Sloane. It was great to get a glimpse of who his father was and how much his parents loved each other. I loved seeing how he came to love his dragon and how he taught his son to love his dragon side.
There's so much pain in life especially when you're different. Both father and son learn to navigate their own way. The story leaves the reader wanting more and enjoying the heartfelt love that drives them to be better that they are treated.
Breaking the chains is a sweet story about finding love when you least expect it. It follows Sloane as he adventures out, not truly knowing where he's going but finds in his travels the woman who would accept and love him for who he truly is.
This is just amazing, it’s makes you cry and laugh... this novella brings so many different emotions. Is like a roller coaster... You guys just enjoy this amazing book...
A novella addition to a great series, how Egan's parents met and who they were.
Sloane is brought up by his mother, who has no Dragon within her, but his father has never been around. His mother always told him to hide his dragon side and made him hate that hidden side of his being.
Things change significantly for Sloane, and then he leaves his realm searching for a happy ending, heading for the Sixth Realm. But, he only gets as far as the fifth, where he meets Eislyn.
A beautiful story of trust and love, but also a sadness that shapes the way Egan is.
Although this is a short novella, Debbie has captured everything we needed to see the hidden strength and love behind both of Egan's parents and beautifully written.
I wish my journey into A Dragon King Legacy hadn't come to an end, but that is a sign of a great series of books. It will be reread again and again.
Breaking the Chains: A Dragon King Legacy (Dragon King Series) Kindle Edition
This novella in the Dragon King series by Debbie McQueen is short and sweet. The novella takes place before the Dragon King series that features Egan and Raidon. Breaking the Chains focuses on giving readers a glimpse into Egan’s parent’s life before the main series. Sloane, Egan’s father, is the main protagonist and we see the world through his POV.
Sloane is 19 in this novella and lives with his mother, having no idea who his father is and no other family he knows about. Sloane hides his dragon because of the feelings of shame his mother has expressed towards him. He hides all aspects of his dragon from her and everyone else. When his grandfather shows up and wants to reconnect with the family, Sloane is shown that he’s not alone. Sloane decides that he needs to leave his mother’s home and goes with his grandfather to meet his dying grandmother and to find out more about himself and his dragon.
After spending some time with his grandfather he leaves to travel and find somewhere to settle. He plans to pass through the Fifth Realm and continue on to the Sixth Realm, where there is a new King that promises to rule differently and fairly. That is until he meets Eislyn on the road while looking for a place to spend a night. Eislyn and Sloane have instant love and he is literally left dumbstruck and chasing sheep for her.
Sorry Debs but the dialog sometimes makes me recoil in my seat. It, at times, feels unnatural.
Other than that, this was a remarkable insight into Egan's past and that of his father as well. A cute book that explains little nuances mentioned in the main books of the series. Very happy to have read this.
