A very timely book - At once edifying and entertaining!
Author Bill O’Neill has authored many books on Trivia and stands as somewhat of an expert in this field! His topics include movies, football, baseball, wars, rock music, simply random trivia facts and US States. Leaning more toward informing his readers about significant historical facts, Bill has added books on Crazy Dictators, Badass Women, Interesting and Crazy Stories from history, and American Heroes. Now with a nod to providing interesting reading material while passing the time at home, Bill offers a cascade of stories that provide not only a celebration of Black Heroes, but also a sense of proportion to our life as materialized by these significant people. This is a timely publication as the world focuses on BLM, and a very worthy homage to the inspiring Black personas that have made such significant contributions!
Providing an overview of the topics of interest in this book, Bill outlines his content in the Introduction – ‘You probably already know a little about some important African-American personalities, but this book covers some of who are considered the greatest Black heroes not just from the United States, but also Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa….And this book is not just confined to current or modern leaders. The history of Black heroes stretches back to ancient times. Taharqa was an ancient Nubian king who ruled over a vast empire in 7th century BCE and was even mentioned in the Bible! …If you’re wondering about Black heroines, don’t worry- this book has plenty. We’ll explore the lives of some pretty phenomenal Black women who left as big an impact as their male counterparts in politics and entertainment, proving that women are just as capable as men.’
Bill O’Neill outdoes himself in his reportage of the concept of heroism and the people who represent that ideal. Some of the Black heroes and heroines he covers include Haile Selassie, Pelé, Josephine Baker, Booker T. Washington, Bob Marley, Martin Luther King, Jr, Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandela, Ben Carson, Barack Obama, George Washington Carver, B.B. King, Jomo Kenyatta, Lena Horne, Redd Foxx, Frederick Douglas, Langston Hughes, Jackie Robinson, Shaka and more. Each individual is honored for the public reason for which they are designated as heroes, but Bill adds significant insights into each person’s special traits with his ‘Did You Know’ sections. As Bill states, ‘Heroes can be politicians, activists, philosophers, warriors, artists, or musicians, but most of all they are inspiring!’
Not only is the book entertaining – it is also very instructive. For those familiar with Bill O’Neill’s talent for tickling the brain, this book is a must read – one of his best. For those who are simply looking for solid entertaining reading to while away the hours, welcome to the field expert! Highly recommended – especially during these times…
Another great book!! Most interesting to me is whose works will be with us forever. My pick is Ela Fitzgerald and her music, avaiable anytime, anywhere!!! And the book will need a,second edition after Todays Superbowl Sunday. More and more of our black heros are emerging from the Sports world which is becoming the best entertainment available on TV and in newspapers.
