3.5/5 the half star is for the sex scene.
two of the major Manga I've read so far had sex scenes in them.
They were better drawn by leaps and bounds but Kengo feels like he is holding himself back not showing too much skin but i have to give it to him he is the better writer when it comes to writing a sex scene.
This issue was a break really nothing much happened , this is usually the case now when the story goes back to Hideo and Hiromi , But there is only 4 volumes left now things really need to speed up and start unraveling i don't want a stupid rushed ending like the one we had at Gantz

We finally came back to the shady adventures of our schizophrenic protagonist and the zombie high schooler. They are entering Tokyo through a deserted highway. Because the protagonist can’t drive a car (a fact that the high schooler resents because it lowers his quality as a man), and because she’s has plenty more endurance due to owning zambo superpowers, she’s in charge of pedalling and steering their way through. They witness the zombified tenants of a building block falling from their stories to their general harm in pursuit of some unseen survivors.

Our trashy protagonists stop to inspect an abandoned car that might have contained some hidden zambol, and when they see a trail of blood and clothes leading from the car to the sea, they are glad that the zambol achieved some degree of subconscious freedom. The high schooler recalls their dead nurse pal, noting that in contrast she’s crushed and packed next to garbage. That makes the protagonist suffer a pang of grief, and he shares a realization he had about his previous girlfriend from before the apocalypse. Back in volume two she had gotten infected and attempted to turn him as well, and after the struggle he had ended up beheading her. However, in a later volume, as the protagonist and the nurse were looking for any medical facility in which to pry a bolt from the zambo high schooler’s head (now that I think about it, she lacks any scar. They must have regenerative abilities, or the author is really lazy), he had found a detached zambo head inside a dog cage. The head, however, was as alive as a zombus can be, which implies that the protagonist’s pre-apocalypse girlfriend must remain alive of sorts in the apartment he left her at, suffering through an impotent zambo hell of her own. But he says that in a world as screwed up as the present one, he’ll just care about the living, including the lucid infected, and that the best way he’s found to carry on is to care about someone. He tells the zambo girl that she’s the person he cares about the most and wants to protect, and that if she allows him, he will accompany her to the end.

As they take a break from all that pedalling in the deserted highway, she says that she missed them just hanging out alone and being able to speak without interruptions; a window into why she might have been ready to kill the nurse when the moment came. She asks him how come he didn’t abandon her when she turned into a zombus; at that point he had no reason to believe she would retain her humanity. He initially felt he had to argue it from a moral standpoint, but it’s the apocalypse and they are well beyond caring about what is socially acceptable, so he nonchalantly says that he stayed with her infected ass because she is a cute high school girl. I don’t know how a real seventeen year old would feel, but she gets as red as a very red thing, tells him that despite appreciating that he saved her he is still an idiot, and attempts to tsundere off in embarrassment through a vast, deserted highway.

After hours of pedalling, the high schooler suggests to the protagonist sitting behind her that he should refrain from getting so close, because she’s sweating bad. The protagonist, attached to enough fetishes to fill a closet, leans closer, takes a good sniff and says that he’s fine with it. The high schooler complains out of general embarrassment. As they approach some highway exits, he asks this seventeen year old if she’s up for some drinking. She’s underage but not an idiot, so she realizes that he wants to get intimate. However, it’s the apocalypse and she doesn’t want for this guy she enjoys being with to leave her alone, and in addition she might have weird tastes, so she suggests they find a nearby supermarket. Shortly after they come across one that before the apocalypse had been closed for maintenance. Somehow nobody had broken into it afterwards. They navigate the empty aisles, with the protagonist pushing a cart while the high schooler happily rides it like a child (as if to emphasize the nature of this relationship). As the girl browses through the alcoholic beverages, the protagonist checks the local supply of condoms while he mumbles to himself about whether or not that fabled moment is going to happen. The high schooler interrupts him to admonish him to stop talking to himself, and that they might as well grab as many condoms as they can. She adds that she’s a virgin, so he should take good care of her. The protagonist runs off to get the cart.

Later on they find a beach and they decide to drink there, next to some fisherman’s shack. She downs drink after drink to an extent that surprises the protagonist. When he asks how come she’s a virgin being so cute, she says that whenever males approached her throughout her life, she stiffened up, and she believes that her mother’s boyfriend might have done something to her when she was a child. He’s disturbed, but then asks her if she’s uncomfortable with him. She realizes that she’s not nor ever been. He wonders whether that means that she doesn’t see him as a proper man. She laughs, but doesn’t deny it.

At one point, tremendously drunk, she gets as serious as she can get and asks him if he really wants her that much. He assures her he does. She wants to know if he’s prepared for what having an intimate relationship with her implies. As they speak we see that one of those monstrous, several stories tall alien/zombol hives has been alerted to the intruders on the beach, and is approaching surprisingly silently. In any case, the protagonist, quite inebriated as well, misunderstands the question. He goes on about how he wants to protect her from any harm, although in this world he might not be able to assure her that they’ll be fine, but she can certainly be sure that he’ll do his best, etc. She says that she didn’t catch like half of that, and keeps downing drinks. Finally the protagonist asks her how come she’s drinking that much. She answers that she’s attempting to disinfect herself. If he kisses her, if anyone kisses her, that person will likely get infected, and that’s what she asked if he was prepared for.

The protagonist realizes that this girl had been intoxicating herself to save him from a terrible fate, and, touched, he grabs a corkscrew and pricks his gums, making them bleed and pretty much guaranteeing that if he could get infected, he would. He says something to the effect that if he’s to be infected he’ll take it, and that if he can’t resist that mental intrusion, she ought to blast his head away with this here shotgun. The high schooler is touched by this thirty five year old man’s eagerness to catch from her the worst venereal disease in the history of mankind, a recklessness that would make San Franciscans proud. As I mentioned before, this protagonist finds his worth in providing and sacrificing for a female, and given that this high schooler seems to be the female that he’s gotten the biggest love-boner for, this man is ready to throw away his whole fucking career. The girl embraces him and asks him to please not be so rash: she needs/wants him alive, with her. She tells him to please never leave her alone. She pecks him on the cheek, but he asks for more, and in the end he throws away all his very recent promises to keep himself uninfected and just shoves his damn tongue into this compliant, heavily drunk seventeen year old. He attempts to caress her naked back under the clothes, but can’t find the way, so she tells him to maneuver under her skirt. For a moment she stops and asks him whether it is really fine to engage with each other when his most recent romantic interest, the wild nurse, was rotting in garbage. But the protagonist yells that it’s fine because he’s garbage as well, and the high schooler adds that she should also be rightfully classified like that, thus finding communion in being unredeemable waste.

She complains that her knees hurt, as they are kneeling on a table, so he proposes they enter the shack to have some sweet, illicit, fish-smelling sex. Inside, when the protagonist turns back he sees that the girl has disrobed to her underwear, but stands there awkwardly as if waiting for something, or regretting it. She asks if this means that they’ll go out. The protagonist, who probably had believed that he had lost the last opportunity in his life to make sweet love to some seventeen year old, is quick to assure her that he’ll date her to the ends of the Earth. She demands a proper confession, though. He, as serious as can be, tells her that he loves her, and to please go out with him. She, in typical Japanese fashion, accepts this sweaty thirty five year old’s life-long commitment with the fabled phrase “please take care of me”.

When he places his sweaty man-palms on her naked shoulders, she remembers that she didn’t shave her armpits. She would rather die than show them, but he assures her that he’ll more than enjoy them. After she lifts her arm, he shoves his nose into those thick armpit hairs, licks their stale musk and then, as an afterthought, slides down to lick her breasts. She’s like enjoying it and stuff. Once she lies down, he opens her legs and probably daubs her clit thoroughly, given such a blessed opportunity, but the author cut to the moment when he had already torn up the condom’s wrapper and is ready to enter her. She’s worried, as is a virgin’s duty, and when this Houellebecqian cockmongrel’s little snake slithers into her cavity, she complains about the pain, which surprises him because as he readily admits he’s “pretty small”. However, once he has destroyed her membranous firewall and rests with his small peepee inside her, she hugs him tightly and celebrates tenderly that now they are finally connected. The protagonist undergoes a hallucinatory sequence not unlike the one he endured when that weird beluga-like mutant Deus ex machinaed him from his rightful ravishment. In this case he not only hallucinates moments from his past, but also from hers, even from before they met each other. When he comes out of it, she realizes that they both experienced the same thing. Around this time she says that she wouldn’t have given her maidenhood to just about anyone; arguable given the circumstances. She believes that she ought to be with a single man for her entire life and just love him forever and ever. I mean, this protagonist has hit the fucking jackpot!

Tired from the sex, the inebriation and the shame, they fall asleep. The alien/zambo hive was close enough, but it had the decency to respect the needed post-coital rest. The protagonist wakes up and realizes that his dear bride is not cuddling him. He finds her outside: a nice shot of her bare high schooler ass against the waves, and her upper body covered in a hoodie. He approaches her cautiously in case she regrets all of it I guess, but she’s generally embarrassed about the intimate acts they performed. She hides her face with the hoodie’s hood. They are interrupted by a bright light coming from the ocean. The protagonist uses a flashlight to send a SOS in morse code, or what he pretends is morse code. In any case, the light blinks in return. The high schooler asks what it means, but the protagonist admits that he has no clue. I thought that they might had encountered an UFO, due to the alien invasion element of the conceptual problem, but it seems to be some motherfucker(s) on a boat.

The several stories tall, vaguely spider-like alien/hive decided it was its moment to enter the scene, by planting one of its enormous legs into the sand. On its lumpy torso grow distorted human faces that stare at the protagonists, who are above questioning anything at that point. The protagonist tells his beloved to slowly approach their bike. Thankfully he had had the forethought to grab his weapons and huge backpack. As they mount the bike, with him pedalling this time, the hive gets mad and crushes the fisherman’s shack. He ends up pedalling like crazy towards where they anticipate the moving light in the ocean is heading. The hive has attracted, or directed, a zombie horde that also pursues the protagonists. The high schooler proclaims that although she used not to care about her life ending, now that she has felt a thirty five year old’s small dick inside her, there’s no way she’ll allow something as lowly as a bunch of zambols to cut that experience short. As he pedals madly she yells that she loves him, to encourage him. What a sweetly improbable girl. They reach a pier of sorts, close enough to the boat to realize that it’s turning away; after all, they risk a horde jumping on, not to mention the gigantic mutant hive. The high schooler grabs the shotgun and blasts away at the faces bulging from the surface of the monster, which makes it fall to the ground for now. Whoever guides the boat acknowledges the effort and turns back, close enough for both to abandon their bike and jump on, landing safely.

Regarding a long-standing dramatic question: this second hallucinatory sequence smells to me like a mounting setup towards eventually revealing that the protagonist had been infected for a long time, like some zambo version of Brace Wollas from “The Sixth Sense”. And unless the author pulls off a better alternate payoff, there’s no way that the protagonist didn’t get infected when various parts of his were inside different viscous cavities of this lovely young lady.

This is actually the first volume of "I am a Hero" which has no dying/death scene at all. Somehow, I feel a little bit glad because the whole volume is dedicated to show how Hideo and Hiromi mutual feelings develop. Nice change.

So back to Hideo and Hiromi, and well they end up having sex on a beach cabin while a big zombie monster is just there behind (someho htye never see it)

Then they see the light of a boat. Survivors.

A nice chase-scape sequence, and they jump to the boat.

Nice cliffhanger there, are the boat survivors nice people??
