Catherine has sold over 3 million bestselling novels worldwide and is translated into eighteen languages.

The first of these novels Catherine started under the desk when she worked as an advertising copywriter. She was duly fired. With time on her hands, she persevered with the novels, which happily flourished.

In the early days she produced a baby with each book - but after three - stuck to the writing as it was less painful.

She writes with her favorite pen in note books, either in the garden or on a sofa.

Home is a rural spot on the Hertfordshire border, which she shares with her family and a menagerie of horses, cows, chickens, and dogs, which at the last count totaled eighty-seven beating hearts, including her husband. Some of her household have walk-on parts in her novels, but only the chickens would probably recognize themselves.

All her novels are published by Penguin Random House internationally, and by No Shooz Publishing in America and will be available in the US in the Fall of 2017.

Having not read anything by Catherine Alliott before but heard she writes engaging emotional women’s fiction, I was over the moon to be invited on the book tour for her latest novel “Behind Closed Doors”.
“From the outside, anyone would think that Lucy Palmer has it all, loving children, a dashing husband and a gorgeous home. But when her marriage to Michael comes to an abrupt and unexpected end, her life is turned upside down in a flash. As the truth of her marriage threatens to surface, Lucy seizes the opportunity to swap her house in London - and the stories it hides - for a rural escape to her parents' farmhouse in the Chilterns. With her parents growing older disgracefully, she can hardly keep up with their social life - especially when it throws her into the path of an old flame. Coming face-to-face with her mistakes, Lucy is forced to confront the secrets she's been keeping from herself and those she loves.”
Although Lucy and her parents are not your average family next door, being more upper class in their activities, I was still able to relate to a lot of the story involving her parents, Henry and Cecily. Having elderly parents myself of the same age, I recognised the out of date fridge and cupboard contents, their reluctance to have help, the ignoring of small health issues and the denial of their fast approaching old age. It gave me a huge amount of encouragement knowing other daughters/sons have similar issues and I found myself agreeing and nodding my head at a lot of went on between them.
When Lucy’s marriage came to an end, I could sense her immediate feelings on not knowing how to react. What she did (or didn’t do) is a thought provoking and much debatable subject and I have to admit I was totally on her side.
The story was narrated in the first person by Lucy. She also reveals events in her marriage and earlier life which blended in seamlessly with the story, allowing you to build a full picture of why she is the woman she is now. I particularly liked how after twenty eight years of married life and two successful grown up children she managed to return to the person she was before and I was with her every emotional step as she shed her skin from the last few years.
“Behind Closed Doors” is a heartwarming and engaging story focusing on domestic abuse, aging parents, starting over and dealing with emotions that can make or break your world. Funny at times but still handling the delicate subject matters with empathy and warmth and I’d be happy to read the previous books this author has written.

Catherine Alliott has sold over two million bestselling novels worldwide and has been translated into eighteen languages. “Behind Closed Doors” is her 17th novel and is a perfect Mother’s Day read. You can read more about this author and book here - https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/312/3...

Thank you to Sriya Varadharajan for inviting me on the #booktour and for my copy of the book in return for an honest review.

This was unexpectedly a slow poignant read with the protagonist, Lucy, at the helm slowly revealing different facets of her married life and afterward.

Lucy supposedly had it all, career and family. But Behind Closed Doors, there was stress and abuse. Her husband was a bully. After his death, she decided to put the house for rent and move back home where her elderly parents needed support. Soon she knew she had to reveal all those secrets she wanted to bury.

My first introduction to author Catherine Alliott’s life, I caught the subtle nuances hidden in the prose in the way she etched her characters. Secrets were cleverly camouflaged. Moral dilemmas were easy to deal with as the author knew how to make me love her characters. There were many who supported and loved Lucy.

The basic core of the book was marital abuse which was sensitively dealt with. Some things horrified my senses, and a part of me wondered how Lucy managed to remain sane after going through so much.

A cleverly written story which at prima face didn’t appear to be deeply emotional but slowly proved me wrong as I got to know Lucy. Quite an explosive end.

This was a difficult book to read. It dealt with mental cruelty and a death of a loved one together with caring for aged parents. This wasn’t what I hoped. Catherine’s last two books haven’t wowed me as she seems to have changed her way of writing into some quite dark and depressive subjects. It’s a shame as I used to love her earlier books. That is why I’m only giving this book 3 stars.

3.5 stars rounded up.

My first Alliott read - definitely female reader focussed.

Protagonist, Lucy, seems to have it all! But 'Behind Closed Doors', there is stress and abuse from her bully of a husband. Following his death, she rents her home and moves back to the country to support her rather drunken, very social, elderly parents.

Some enjoyable character nuances and cleverly camouflaged secrets. There were the requisite moral dilemmas and some stereotypical responses, not all of which would have been mine.

An easy read.

This is an interesing story which turned out to be a little darker than I had expected. Lucy Palmer’s life is one that many would be jealous of, but her marriage to her husband isn’t as wonderful as it seems and when something unexpected happens, she takes the opportunity to get away from her old life and start anew, back in the home where she grew up. But life with her ageing parents isn’t as easy as she had hoped, and she soon starts to struggle with leaving her past behind her.

When I first began reading this book I thought it would be a relatively light-hearted contemporary story with a bit of romance thrown in, indeed the beginning introduces us to Lucy’s parents who are bikering and end up being quite funny throughout the story, but this book turned out to be much darker than first impressions with Lucy’s life being not as rosy as we first think. The story of her husband Michael, who turns out to be quite an abusive and manipulative man made this story feel quite an interesting, darker and a more compelling read. There is a lot that happens and I don’t want to go into the details as it will spoil it but I felt that the way this abusive relationship was shown, was done well and made the the story and Lucy’s character feel more relatable in a way as her life was so flawed in a way that I couldn’t have imagined.

As we see her life progress, we are introduced to lots of different characters. I actually enjoyed getting to know Lucy’s parents, their way of growing old disgracefully, always drinking, partying, and the funny things that happened with them, even silly things like the surpise in the ice cream tub, made me laugh out loud on more than one occassion. There were many light-hearted moments like these and although there was the potential love interest that I had expected when I read the blurb, I was surprised by how unpredictable the overall story was, I never knew what was going to happen and I love how this story kept me glued to the pages, wanting to keep reading to find out what would happen to Lucy and everyone else.

Throughout the story, Lucy’s past both distant and recent affect what she does and I like what happened overall with this story. The dark things that we learn about her life, through memories and conversations, affect her but at the same time she’s determined not to let them hold her back and I just loved how this story resolved itself in the end with everything going the way I had hoped it would, with all the characters including the surpirse towards the end of a neighbour.

The story is told in the first person perspective, with Lucy narrating, but I did enjoy how this book felt different to many others I’ve read, where Lucy felt as if she was speaking to us as if talking to a friend. The book does contain some dark decriptions including a death that is not gory but the way it occured might be difficult for some to read, as well as some relationship abuse and swearing including some very strong language, although this wasn’t very frequent.

Overall I really enjoyed the way this book went and the ending was one that was satisfying. In fact what happens at the end is exactly what I had been hoping for which made it all the more satisfying for me to read! Even though this book has some darker material than what I had expected when looking at the cover and description, it is an enjoyable read, and what happens is tackled well with a positive overall story and message which I loved. And although there were a few times where I did find the book a little slow, it was overall a good pace and one I did enjoy reading. My only real disappointment was the fact that the black cat on the front cover doesn’t really make much of an appearance in the book, but that’s just a minor niggle, lol. 😉

Lucy Palmer has it all: loving children, a dashing husband and a beautiful home. What goes on behind closed doors, however, is different matter. When something unthinkable happen, Lucy is forced to come to face-to-face with her mistakes and confront the secrets she's been keeping from herself and those she loves the most.

behind-closed-doors

Started okay but then it jumped to Lucy's backstory; flow was lost, it no longer gripped me as much as I thought it would. I should have felt sorry for Lucy but somehow I didn't feel her ordeal. Perhaps because of the way she was written and her story was told. I don't want to be told but I want to see myself and make my own conclusions. I didn't understand
I didn't much care for any of the characters and the writing was average. I guess some of the situations were meant to be funny but I did not find it so. Its nice to be reminded about the damage of domestic abuse and bullying but its been done so many times before.

If you want a story about mature heroine, read about 80+ people and their health issues, about a wife who's been bullied by her husband for years, then give it a try.

Lucy returns to her family home to help look after her ageing parents. There is a lot of humour in the book, trying to keep track of her parents hectic social life and their equally eccentric friends and the escapades they all get up to. She has to try and rein in their excesses and make them admit some of their difficulties, without surrendering their independence.
There are touching moments where she shows how much she cares for them and also the exasperation shared with other grown children, switching reponsibilities.
It was such a heartwarming read.

Behind Closed Doors has a fabulous cast of characters and absorbing story telling.

Lucy narrating in the first person drew me in from the beginning. It was so easy to identify with her and when I had finished the story, I really did miss her! She is a strong, loving and funny woman. Someone you want to be good mates with. I loved that after spending so many years in silence, she loses the filter. Liberating to say what you’re thinking 🙂

When her marriage ends it gives her the opportunity to stop acting a part and be who she really is but there are consequences that overshadow her moving on. I hadn’t thought of those consequences as I was focused on celebrating her freedom and wondering what would happen when she moved to her parents. When I realised what those consequences could mean, I had so much hope that Catherine Alliott would craft an ending to do Luce’s strength justice.

Through reflection we experience her history with Michael and why she was attracted to him. We witness a scene that makes it clear what’s been happening and throughout the story snippets are shared. It’s not until near the end when Luce is talking to Ingrid do we find out the true extent. I was crying. Not only because of what was being shared but also the unexpected unity. It’s such a powerful scene.

Luce’s elderly parents, their friends and their families provide entertainment as well as a message about independence and pride. I wasn’t sure how Luce would fit in with this community and hoped she would see that opting for safe and routine really wouldn’t suit her. She would find it stultifying. She needed new experiences and the chance to find her own way…

Behind Closed Doors shows us what being a part of a family is really like. The sacrifices that others make that might not come to awareness, the sacrifices we make to keep others safe that we think go unnoticed and underlying it all, unconditional love. It’s a story of empowerment and joy.

To the outside world, Lucy had an enviable life. Her husband Michael, a part-time theatre critic, while Lucy is a relatively successful author of a long-running cosy mystery series. They have been married for 28 years and have two grown-up children.

Life is very different on the other side of the door, where Michael is controlling and manipulating. He knows how to mentally beat her up and crush her, while there are no scars for anyone to see. When a tragic event takes place, it gives Lucy a chance to take a new direction. But now she is hiding an even bigger secret.

This book was like Lucy, as it held so many secrets, stories and emotions that made me gasp. I raged and laughed at times as I touched base with parts of this story and nodded along with fully understanding. Some incredible characters hang on to memories of their pasts while making many more of them while they can. I envied Lucy for having parents while at the same time wanting to become like them in a few years.

The story dips back to her life and events that took place at home, which made me sit back and sort of shudder a little on both counts. I liked the subtle changes that were taking place in Lucy, as she is such a likeable character but at times out of her depth and in a tailspin where I felt she would mentally crash and burn.

I really can’t recommend this book enough, it feels like living in the fast lane with so much going off and made me realise that sometimes you need to slow it down and enjoy it. I Loved the ending. Superb!

I wish to thank Net Galley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

Lucy Palmer had it all. A successful career writing cosy mysteries, a theatre-critic husband, a large house in a desirable area of London and two well-adjusted children. But behind the facade lies something sinister, jealousy, controlling behaviour, multiple affairs, psychological abuse, threats and fear.

Lucy's 80+ parents are no longer coping alone, drinking too much and not looking after themselves properly, something needs to be done.

Then Lucy's husband Michael dies suddenly and everything changes.

I fear I have made this sound gloomy, and it really isn't. Sure, some glimpses into Lucy's life feel a little close to the bone, but despite everything Lucy has a loving sister, parents, children, and friends. Her husband and his snobby friends might have looked down on her novels but they paid the bills on the house Michael bought with an inheritance.

I really enjoyed this, I didn't realise I had read and enjoyed another of Catherine Alliott's books before, that book was very different, albeit those characters also seemed to live in lovely, lovely houses LOL.

Thoroughly enjoyable and I could have carried on reading for 100s of pages more.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Ive loved Catherine Alliotts' writing since her first book, but found recent books have appealed to me less, however this one finds her right back on form in my opinion.
Funny, emotional and deals with a difficult subject with humour and sensitivity, some great characters as always, I really enjoyed reading this, bit of an abrupt ending though!

Lucy is living a difficult life with her controlling husband Michael, but then their marriage ends in a sudden and unexpected way leaving her to move on. She takes on looking after her elderly parents and fending off her narcissistic and needy sister in law. This is sometimes traumatic, sometimes comical and ends with sweetness and happiness thankfully.

This book left me with a huge smile on face, but it didn’t start that way as it’s quite dark and sad in places.
The story was told from Lucy’s point of view, as she comes to terms with life living with her elderly parents, following the sudden ending of her marriage. I loved Lucy, such a lovely warm person, who didn’t deserve what life had thrown at her. The plot took me through a myriad of emotions, learning about her life with her husband Michael and their two grown-up children Imo and Ned.
There were some very colourful characters in this book, particularly Lucy’s parents and their friends, aka drinking buddies. Her sister Helena and her twin girls, also made me laugh out loud on numerous occasions! 😀
I haven’t read a Catherine Alliot novel in years and this reminded me how much I enjoy her books and really must read more of her back catalogue.
I definitely recommend this if you enjoy family dramas that make you laugh, but also don’t shy away from the dark side of life.

3.5 really. It was a nice story, with some real strong issues, but the issues were almost in the background... faded out by what the story was really about. The protagonist. I think the author was trying to emphasise that women can be strong in everyday life whilst putting on a brave face... and to them, it's the norm. I get it and like the premise, it just made the issues much subtler and turned what could have been a thriller into chick lit.

I’d like to thank Sriya from Michael Joseph for contacting me to take part in this blog tour. I have never read anything by Catherine Alliot before so I was excited to discover a new author.

The story is told entirely from Lucy’s point of view as she comes to terms with the end of her marriage and deciding what she wants to do next. I hadn’t expected the story to start quite as dark as it did and I was shocked to of learnt that not only had Lucy endured so much mental abuse but she had put up with it for so long! Some would argue that she should of walked away years ago but as I learnt more about her marriage I could see why it wasn’t so easy for Lucy. Michael’s behaviour was disgusting and hard to read at times but it was his revenge that was the worst. He was manipulative and calculative in his actions and I can understand Lucy’s fear for what might happen if she tried to leave.

Lucy was a very warm and friendly main character. She clearly had a lot of love for her children and I loved the relationship she had with them. Imo and Ned were brilliant and had inherited their mothers compassion and kindness. They felt like a strong unit that had suffered for years but kept each other going, there was no resentment or hatred within their circle.

Whilst the start of the story dealt with some heavy topics, as the story progressed the clouds started to part and the sunshine shone through, in the form of Lucy’s parents! I found myself giggling at their funny ways, raucous parties and candid nature. Their neighbours were very funny and they just reminded me of a group of teenagers! I also appreciated the quieter moments where Lucy’s parents showed their appreciation for her help. It must of been hard for them to lose some of that independence and accept that whilst they were capable of looking after themselves they did need someone to give them a helping hand.

As the story progresses we see Lucy faced with further troubles from her past and this gave the story another layer that I hadn’t expected. I actually didn’t need the romance with Dan or Josh, it felt a little much for me. I was more interested in Lucy’s life as a free woman, away from the troubles of her marriage and finally enjoying her life.

This book explores that dark side of marriage and the ripple effect it has on the whole family. It shows how a poison can seep into the cracks without you realising but also how through solidarity and strength you can find a light at the end.

It's always a treat to discover a new author. Despite this being Catherine Alliott's 17th novel, it is the only one I've read - and I loved it!

When Lucy Palmer's marriage to Michael ends suddenly, it turns her world upside down. As secrets start to unravel, Lucy leaves London and goes home to live with her elderly parents in the Chilterns. It allows her to look after her parents and to get her head together.

Behind Closed Doors is a book about life. Lucy tells us about her past: her childhood, how she met Michael, their marriage, her children. The chatty, first-person narrative allows Lucy to entrust her innermost thoughts to us, so we feel close to her. I'll be honest; it wasn't what I expected from the blurb on the back. There's substance to this story that I wasn't expecting.

Behind Closed Doors is about the complexities of family life, caring for elderly parents and the role reversal that comes with it, old flames, and second chances. Catherine Alliott tackles some difficult themes in the book - there were some scenes where I needed to take a break after reading - but she does so with style and empathy.

There's a great cast of characters in Behind Closed Doors. Lucy's parents and their antics with their friends bring light relief to some of the more intense parts of the story.

For me, there is no doubt that Catherine Alliott is an accomplished and skilful writer. The cleverly constructed plot, well-drawn characters, relatable themes, and easy-to-read and intelligent prose make for an enjoyable and compelling read. I finished Behind Closed Doors with a happy heart.

My thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy of the book in return for this honest review.

On the surface Lucy Palmer seems to have it all – two lovely grown-up children, a career as a crime novelist, marriage to a well-known theatre critic and a beautiful house in the city. However, appearances can be deceptive as not all abuse is visible on the outside. For years she suffered her husband Michael’s controlling behaviour – he made it impossible for her to just walk away – but now, due to unforeseen circumstances, she can take charge of her own life.
Meanwhile, her ageing parents, Cecily and Henry, are finding it hard to cope on their own, but are reluctant to admit it. She rents out her house and goes back to live with them, which gives her some breathing space to consider her future.
If you are familiar with Catherine Alliott’s novels, you will recognise this world. Her characters are wonderfully drawn and completely believable – I especially liked Lucy’s parents and their circle of eccentric friends, and her twin nieces, Tess and Maudie. On the other hand Michael’s sister, Amanda is truly horrible; despite this, somehow, I still had some sympathy for her. Their troubled childhood had obviously warped them both.
There is not as much focus on romance in Behind Closed Doors as there usually is in novels by this writer, but that’s fine as this is such and interesting and absorbing story. Told entirely from Lucy’s point of view, with enough humour to lighten the dark subject matter, we are with her all the way as she contemplates how (and with whom) she wants to live the rest of her life.
I have read and loved all Catherine Alliott’s books, and this is one of her best. The title is very apt, referring as it does to both Lucy’s life and that of her parents. The serious subjects dealt with in Behind Closed Doors are handled with sensitivity and empathy, and are a reminder that not all suffering can be seen with the naked eye.

Behind Closed Doors is the first book I've read by Catherine Alliott and I'm so glad I did. An engaging Women's fiction novel I really enjoyed the character driven plot and found it very compelling.
From the outside looking in Lucy has it all, a beautiful house and garden, a loving husband and two healthy grown up children that appear to be flourishing in their lives, but when there's a break in at Lucy's House and Michael, Her husband is caught in the cross fire and their marriage is about to come to an unexpected end.
As the truth of their marriage begins to unravel, Lucy leaves their house to go and care for her parents in the countryside, giving her time to reflect on her life and the decisions she's made.
Cecily and Henry are both in their mid eighties but their age certainly isn't slowing them down. Lucy can barely keep up with their party lifestyle but it keeps her busy and she has reconnected with someone she knew when she was younger so she may have another reason to stick around.
I loved that Behind Closed doors really is thought provoking, it made me as a reader think of what I would do in Lucy's position, and I completely changed my opinion of her as a character the more I read her story.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this, there's great character formation and even though its very character driven I never once lost interest.
I'm quite surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did and definitely recommend it!

Behind Closed Doors is an engaging and emotional family drama which is narrated by the central character, Lucy, with flashbacks to past events. Lucy’s somewhat toxic marriage comes to an abrupt end following the unexpected death of her husband. A husband who, it is revealed, was both controlling and manipulative and we discover there was more going on in the marriage than meets the eye. The title ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is a very appropriate one, as no-one knows what goes on behind the scenes.

Lucy decides to make a fresh start, she rents out her house and moves to live with her ageing parents who are struggling to cope on their own. The interactions between Lucy and her parents are so heartwarming and endearing and quite comical at times. Lucy is a fabulous character and the author really captured her emotions and the turmoil she was going through after her husband’s death and the fact that the events surrounding his death persistently pricked at her conscience. The storyline is complex and captivating and there are some wonderful twists and I became completely absorbed in the highs and lows of Lucy’s life from beginning to end.

This is an emotional and touching novel with great characters and humour. It’s quite deep at times, but the author has sensitively addressed some of more heavier topics and it is well balanced with some some lovely heartwarming and funny moments. It is well written and takes the reader through a range of different emotions. Initially, I wasn’t quite sure what genre this book sits in and anticipated a thriller, a romance or a combination of the two, but what we have is a lovely work of Women’s Fiction following Lucy on her emotional journey and the impact this also had on her family. Catherine Alliott is a new to me author and I enjoyed her writing style, I will definitely be reaching for more of her work.

I'm not really sure how to describe this book as, dependant on the chapter you are reading, it could be a thriller, a family tale, a romance, etc. It was like Lucy had different personalities, also dependent on where we were in the story. However, it came together nicely and I really enjoyed it. Once the thriller part of the book got going it was gripping, then there was a chapter about Lucy's parents and it was like the other side of what was going on never happened, but it was always in the back of my mind.
I do recommend this book as it is a lovely story about a complicated woman. The only reason I dropped a star was that halfway through I got confused with the swapping and changing of the genre, although it all became apparent in the end.

This book actually did have very dark themes that I wasn't expecting. Iv always kept up with Catherine Alliot and will always read her books, might she be stearing in another direction!? 🤔 if so... that's all good with me. I love her flawless writing style and her sharp tongue! Funny when it probably shouldn't be, but I liked this about it.

An author that I will always praise, I began my adult reading journey with this Author and will forever push others to read her work 🥰🥰.

As usual, her main character is lovable, contemporary and someone I can relate to (appart from the rich alcoholic parents and arsehole husband that is)

That's me all caught up with all her booksies. On the look out for the next one 😘

Did Lucy really have the perfect marriage and the perfect family? Behind closed doors lurks the perfect lie. Her manipulative husband, Michael, uses coercive control to make Lucy’s life a living hell. But when he dies suddenly Lucy’s life is turned on its head - but what lies is Lucy now covering up. When she takes on the role of caring for her aged parents she also has to face the concerns of dementia and ageing.

This is an excellent read dealing with difficult issues but it is certainly not a gloomy book. Indeed there are many light-hearted moments that will have the reader smiling. High recommended.

'Perfect marriage, Perfect family, Perfect lie'
Lucy's perfect marriage ends with the death of her husband and she decides to leave the city and go and take care of her elderly parents which she finds a challenge. They enjoy life with a capital E and she learns a lot from them and realises how controlling her husband had been.
The story evolves in an interesting way with touches of humour. With the help of friends and her children she makes some big decisions about the dark secrets she keeps.

A read with good story to it. Lucy was a good character who had a very tough time with an abusive husband , that was very emotional subject handled sensitively but was still heartbreaking to read.

Behind Closed Doors by Catherine Alliott a five-star read that will open many doors. This was deeper and more emotional than I was expecting, I was thinking it would be a light and fluffy romance, and it was in some ways, but when you come to Lucy and her relationship with her husband Michael and all I can say is thank goodness for that being over. But it was dealt with very well and showed us how not only Lucy was affected, and that felt real and made this a deeper and overall a better story. This was a great story about struggle and no matter what you face you can do anything. This is so much more than I expected when I picked it up.

Thanks to Michael Joseph for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:

From the outside, anyone would think that Lucy Palmer has it all: loving children, a dashing husband and a gorgeous home.

But Lucy gets more than she bargained for when she moves back to her childhood home, especially when it throws her into the path of an old flame.

Coming face-to-face with her mistakes, Lucy is forced to confront the secrets she's been keeping from herself and those she loves.

Thoughts: I loved this. It wasn’t what I expected at all. It had me turning the pages like a thriller! I was dying to know what was going to happen. Lucy was such a likeable character, you couldn’t help but like her and her mischievous parents! It was the truth of her marriage that had me turning the pages. Especially the one huge secret Lucy is keeping! Highly recommend

Behind Closed Doors is the latest book by Catherine Alliott and for me, a change to her usual style of book. It was a lot darker than usual and I enjoyed immensely.

Lucy Palmer lives in a lovely house in London with her husband Michael and appears on the outside to live a charmed life. She is a cosy mystery writer of moderate success with two adult children who have since flown the nest. Looks can be deceiving though…

On the inside, her husband is a controlling bully who manipulates and belittles Lucy and her career whilst flaunting his many affairs in front of her with little respect for everyone concerned. Lucy has been made to feel worthless and almost as though she deserves the way her husband treats her. When her marriage ends suddenly, she has the chance to start afresh and find the Lucy that has been buried for too long along with some much needed happiness and joy.

She rents out the house in London and moves back to her parents house with the intention of keeping an eye on them. Despite their advancing years, they show no sign of slowing down and seem to think that ignorance is bless where their health and drinking parties are concerned!

I really enjoyed how the author lets you dip into Lucy’s life in London with Michael before bringing you back to the present day. You learn a lot from these chapters about how she lived with the constant cloud of Michael looming over her and follow her as her confidence and happiness ebbs away. She is a character that you grow to become fond of along with her parents who despite their almost happy go lucky life, come to realise that they can all help each other.

I think I went into this book almost expecting to know how things would end so I was pleasantly surprised that I was actually wrong with a lot of my assumptions!

A really enjoyable story from Catherine Alliott with some added surprises that really kept me turning the pages.
