Real Mountains tells the story of the weeklong search for Greg Seftick and Walker Kuhl, two friends missing in Grand Teton National Park, and the love for mountains and medicine that brought Greg west. Author Dan Seftick shares his struggle to deal with the reality of his son's death and the range of emotions he experienced during and after the search. What's left are the memories of a short but inspired thirty-one year life, the relentless grief that fills the hearts of all who knew Greg, and the desire to preserve and build a son's legacy.
Such a special book. Reading through a father’s grief of losing his son too early. Greg lives on in the pages of this book and through his family and friends. Even though I never met him, after reading this book I feel like I knew him and that we could have been friends. We had a lot in common, both in the medical field, both have younger brothers, both love the outdoors. I started reading this book after my own trip to Grand Teton National Park, and I agree with Greg: God did some of his finest work with those mountains. Life is too short to not be doing what you love!
Thanks to his dad's excellent book, "Real Mountains", I feel that I now know Dr. Greg Seftick better than any other person I've never met (excluding deities, of course). A truly remarkable story of one fine human being, taken way too early. Dan Seftick captures the spirit and determination of his son in a wonderfully woven biography.
Take it from an ex-librarian, this book is well worth the time to read. I recommend to parents struggling with children having difficulty in school and people simply wanting comfort from the loss of a loved one.
This a bittersweet memoir of the author’s son, who died during an avalanche. He was loved by his family and friends. The book is an answer to the question WHY these things must happen to people. It is a heartbreaking look at grief and how can we survive this thing. It helped me a bit and I hope it helps you too.
