Stewardship isn't just managing resources―it's soul care.
Stewardship of time, talents, and treasure isn't just about sustaining the material of the church. It's about guiding those resources in service of the church's primary proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. Stewarding the lambs of Christ that make up your congregation encompasses all aspects of their lives―material and spiritual.
Nathan Meador and Heath R. Curtis present a practical theology of stewardship focused on ministry in service of the gospel. Guiding pastors away from the pitfalls of idolatry around money, they instead call stewards to embrace their identity in Christ and encourage their congregations to do the same. This fresh approach to stewardship reorients both individuals and congregations toward their true purpose as stewards who have been baptized into Christ.
Stewardship will help pastors to teach and preach stewardship as a call to repentance and new life.
EDIT: Now that I'm at my computer, I'll add some more. I really appreciated the Theology baseline here, but also the authors not being ashamed of their faith tradition.
Especially Curtis outlines the importance of rooting all of one's life in one's God - given identity as Steward. First this was given to Adam and then to all mankind.
However, we failed at this task, so it was handed off to Jesus Christ, the Second Adam who lived a perfect life as steward of all creation. By faith in Him, He shares His perfect stewardship with all Christians.
Curtis and Meador, through stories and outright advice, encourage pastors and church leaders to ground their people in the baseline identity of Steward of creation and God's gifts, beginning with the individual pastor and extending to the core leaders.
Through their effective example of stewardship, the hope is that the culture of the congregation is focused and shifted away from the "organic culture" that happened without planning, leading to mediocrity.
Overall, I hope and pray that as I implement this leadership philosophy into my own ministry, that the Holy Spirit will bring about changed lives and gratitude toward God for all that I have.
