The Burger Flip Kid

Rate this book
Skipper Matthews has an obsession—burgers.

It’s all he ever eats. And not just any burgers, Burger Flip burgers—the most famous burger franchise in the world.

For the last 11 years, Skip has only eaten at Burger Flip. He even has a life-sized figure of Harry B, the Burger Flip mascot in his living room, not to mention walls of memorabilia and vintage Funny Meal toys.

On the heels of his girlfriend Sophia leaving him over his passion and his mom threatening to send him to a shrink, he finally has a choice to make: give up his burgers for the people he loves or fall deeper into the clutches of his growing obsession.

Will Skip give up the Flip? Find out in this short read by Duke Tate.

This is a very short story (20 pages), and I read the whole book in less then 20 minutes. I found the start good, and it pulled me into it. There was no really middle. I found the ending weird and not really an ending. I am sitting here trying to figure out the point because I did not see a reason or feel this book had a real ending. I am lucky to won a kindle edition of this book from Goodreads, but this review is 100% my own opinion about the book.

I am blaming my brother for me reading this “book”. It’s only 20 pages & 99 cents, so at least I didn’t waste much on it, but both were poorly spent. It started out ok and perhaps showed some promise, but always felt a little superficial and at times almost sloppy. I thought it was beginning to show promise as Skip confronted his obsession but it quickly devolved into an even more farcical situation (the story had already strained the bounds of reality). Burger Flip is a weak stand in for McDonald’s and the author makes minimal effort to be creative as he converts McDonald’s references to “safe” fictional versions (Hamcrook is kind of pathetic creatively and an obvious reference to the more creatively named Hamburgler). I have spent almost as much time writing this review as reading the “book” and I can only hope that by reading this, I can save you from wasting your time & money.

Short, sweet and topped off with a slice of the bizarre. Sometimes that's just how I like my stories seasoned.

Note: This short story is kid friendly even though it reads as an adult book.

I paid 99 cents for this on the Kindle store. I like stories about interesting people who live different lives and this fit the bill. It was a quick and fun read. It's only like 20 pages.

I've never read anything by Duke Tate, but I enjoyed the style of his prose as it was engaging. The story itself had an interesting premise that had me wondering where it was going to go. I did not expect the ending or where it went. I think I liked how it ended, but I'm not sure. It was so out there, which is fine, but I think a lot of people would be mystified.

i finished thinking, "What did I just read?" It was almost like a short story written for a high school Creative Fairy Tales class - it would have been better with some editing. Not simple enough for a kid's story, but not good enough for an adult story. I did not like the writing, and I'm only glad I spent less than 20 minutes on it.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. A light hearted short story about a young man whom is addicted to burgers but not just any burger, a fast food hamburger from ‘Burger Flip’. It wasn’t un common for Skipper Matthews to eat 3 Burger flip a day. Sometimes even more, often freezing them for the next days lunch. He never bought groceries. His diet consists of Burger Flips. Skip is a 21 year old surfer. He also had an obsession with all things blue and Gold which were ‘Burger Flips’ brand colors. As a child his mother would take him to Burger Flip after school for a funny meal and eventually he lost all taste for all other food. Find out what happens when his girlfriend Sophie gives him an ultimatum telling him it’s either her or the Burgers. Can Skip get over his addiction? Will he make the change in order to keep his girlfriend Sophie? This is a fun light short read and I found it quite humorous.

Quirky

Hmm. This is definitely an interesting and quirky little book. What would you do if you were obsessed with a fast food joint and that is the only food that you ate, I mean ONLY ? You eat it breakfast, lunch, and dinner, buy in bulk and freeze it so you don't run out. Meeting friends out for dinner? No worries, just pack a few burgers from your fave burger joint. Well, Skipper does just that, and at 21 years old he is letting it take over his life. He has lost his girlfriend, his parents are worried, and he can't hold down a job.

Great and well written story, quite interesting and unique. But the ending... this ending just makes you shake your head, walk away, and say...O...K...

You are what you eat

Skipper is a man obsessed. Obsessed with double stacked cheeseburgers. Not just any double stacked cheeseburgers they have to be Burger Flip double stacked cheeseburgers. The obsession started at 12 when his father left and his mother took him for burgers after school. But he can't overcome his obsession as a man. It costs him everything, his girlfriend, his job and now his parents. But then one morning he wakes up to the most shocking cost of all.

Thanks Goodreads - I got this short story/novella in a giveaway.

The buildup to this metamorphosis retelling seems great - and then the end comes rather hurriedly. Still the Burger Flip mystique is so well-done it got 4 stars.
