Fated Elves #1

The Elven King's Captive

Rate this book
An omega elven king is shocked to discover his alpha... is a human construction worker?

When Dustin stumbles into Casersis and touches his magic amulet, Dustin’s hint of elven blood starts a magical chain reaction that puts him in mortal danger. The amulet’s power begins to rewrite his DNA from human to elf, and if humanity finds out, he’ll become a science experiment at best. But when Casersis senses the change, his first instinct is to hold Dustin captive.

Casersis wants his young alpha to be safe and loved while he undergoes his magical change. Exiled from his home and throne by his son, and now a billionaire corporation owner, when Casersis issues commands, his people fall in line. But Dustin is so independent that Casersis doesn’t know how to hold onto him without suffocating his new lover.

Can Casersis keep Dustin safe by holding him against his will? Or will the threat of captivity erase the bond of trust they had just begun to form?

This 73,000-word non-shifter omegaverse novel is set in a world where mpreg (male pregnancy) is a fact of life. However, this series does not end with a baby or pregnancy.

This is my new favorite book of 2021!

This book put me through the emotional wringer in the very best way! The author has crafted a work that feels so very real that I feel like I just lived every page! What an astounding journey reading this has been!

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

First book I've read by this author and there was a lot I liked:

- Omega-verse: I'm a sucker for an omega verse universe, and being Elves is cherry on top.
- Self lubricating omegas.... HELL YES! I love that.
- The Elf king, who is older than time, is an omega, and the human with the elf blood is the Alpha. Loved the role reversal.
- I appreciated the fact that there wasn't talk of love and mates and these kinds of feeling in the beginning... not even in the end. this is an ongoing series, so the author took time to establish feelings.
- The Steam was hot!
- I loved the world building and am intrigued with how everything will play out.

What I didn't like...
- There was some inconsistency with feelings and reactions. things that were left unsolved.

Dustin is a twenty years old construction worker, his life changes instantly when he collides with Casersis.
Casersis is an elven king, banned to the earth realm, he’s a powerful, beautiful man with long black hair.
Colliding with him has consequences, Dustin blacked out. .

“I will earn the right to shower you with whatever I like if you will but let me.” .

Even though Casersis is wealthier and more powerful, Dustin is the one who comforts the omega, just like a good Alpha should.
But Casersis has a secret to reveal and he’s so afraid his alpha will leave him.
Dustin is shocked to know he’s changing, shocked Casersis wants to keep him indoors, shocked about their feelings.

Dustin is independent since he was sixteen, he can’t be kept by Casersis.
Casersis is afraid Dustin will get hurt when humans understand their secret.
Slowly turning into an elf is frightening but has advantages, Dustin experience more, he has a deeper connection to nature and he even can see the passage between Earth and Adradis, Casersis’ homeworld.

Casersis has an enemy, Erastus, who envies him on every level. He wants what Casersis has.
Dustin is getting crazy locked up in Casersis’ house, he has to get out, and so he does.

This was an entertainingly written story with a good concept and attractive scenery, all nicely developed. I loved both mc’s and their dynamic, I really love the elven world. .
At first, I didn’t know what to expect, is it a dark story, serious business or is it funny.
I got the picture after some pages. The further in the story the more I loved it.
There is still so much to discover, I hope to visit the Elven Realm, maybe meet Casersis’ family.
I’m curious to know Dustin’s power and how their love will go.
Looking forward to the next installment.

The premise was intriguing - a three million year old(!) elf king, and a 20 year old construction worker are alpha and omega? The construction worker gets turned into an elf and it’s partially a captor/captive romance? Sounds cool.

No such luck.

When I hear three million year old immortal, I expect someone bored, world weary, cultured. What I got was an immature character, whose only apparent trait of being so old was to talk in a stilted, awkward manner and call the other MC “beauty” constantly. It’s the Fever school of ancient fae speak (which I also hated).

The priorities of the elf guy were so whack. Surely, as an ancient bored immortal, when you have a human get burned by your amulet and then pass out on you, you’d be curious, right? Unique circumstances? Wouldn’t you focus on that situation because it’s so interesting, rather than babbling about playing dress up and going to dinner? Apparently not.

I think this was a fated mates type scenario, but it wasn’t very clear in text. Usually these are nice and blatant, the characters wondering “why do I trust this person so much” plus excess feelings etc. This just felt like Dustin was a complete moron. He was pretty short on personality anyway, as well as self-interest. He gets dropped (for all intents and purposes) in a random fairytale meadow and he just sort of…chills. He doesn’t seem motivated to even walk around or anything. And of course, after he apparently passes out on a stranger, has his mind go wandering, gets woken up via blowjob (seriously?), he’s just like “okey dokey lets go shopping! wheeee” Dude.

Overall, between the characters without personality, the terribly awkward speech attempts, and the nonsensical priorities of the characters…no thanks.

(I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.)

2.5 stars, rounded up.

I want to preface all of this by saying that this book was chalked full of potential. I loved the premise of the futuristic world and the fantasy elements tied into it. I loved the idea of an ancient, ousted king desperate for love and acceptance. I loved this different and interesting take on the a/b/o thing, including the transformation between species.

However, I also feel like this book fell extremely short of my expectations. For one, it dragged. A lot. Nothing happened, except the same, repeating conversations, for most of the book. Dustin and Cass would fight, then make up, kiss a little, then have the exact same fight again, almost verbatim. I understand the whole premise was that Dustin was a captive, but there was absolutely no development in his relationship with Cass. One minute he was free, the next he was captive and automatically in love with his captor. It felt as though there wasn't even time for Stockholm Syndrome to develop.

I wish there was more development, more depth of character, to this wholly fascinating world and concept the author presented. It's entertaining enough to keep you reading and what not, but by the end, I was just left wanting it to have been more.

I tried a spoonful of that soup and I did not enjoy a single bit of whatever was floating in it.

The set up:
Dustin is a construction worker in a very segregated city of Shadetree (I think the name is). We find him in a very upscale business part of the city on his way back from work. His clothes are cheap and dirty and torn. He himself is looking pretty rough, according to the author. How does this segregated society allow the likes of Dustin to walk the posh streets of Shadetree? *clutches the pearls*

Next thing we know, Dustin - the poorest, dirtiest person on the street - gets mugged! 😆🤣😆🤣

Phew... once I got over the shock, I found Dustin being pushed right into the arms of an Elvin King. What a delightful progression of the events! I really really like myself a good Cinderfella story, and was looking forward to dive right into whirlpool of all that it entails.

But wait! Dustin suddenly discovers himself in another world. One minute he is walking down the street, next - he is sitting in the middle of a beautiful meadow with a castle visible in the distance. Wow! I waited for him to go and investigate. But he doesn't bother, he just sits there, chilling in the grass, no desire to find the way back. Ugh.... ok.

How does he get back to reality? Well, there is this magical, all-healing power of oral sex and an insane amount of time Dustin spending in Cas's lap, also for healing or some such weird reason. Of course.

So far the characters are dull and the conversation revolves (after Dustin is back) - mostly - around clothing and how gorgeous and precious Dustin is. There is some mystery regarding what/who-the-hell-knows going on that the King keeps hinting at, but at this point I don't really care in the slightest.

Not sure how did the King finds out that Dustin is a skilled conversationalist, but apparently between freaking out, having sex and empty banter, Dustin manages to impress the three millennia-old Cas: "(Dustin), you are a treasure to talk to —interesting, funny, and so very concerned for others over yourself..." WAIT! Did I miss a whole previous installment or something? 😣

Another thing that rubbed me the wrong way - why can't a drop dead gorgeous guy like Dustin work in construction? WTAF????

I am done with this book.

This is a new to me author and I can't wait to read more by her. I'm normally don't read books about elf's, but the blurb on this one kind of grabbed me. Dustin is human and poor and life is not easy. The way they are treated by the upper class is horrible. I want to "see" more of the elven world. On the way home from work, Dustin literally runs into Cass and he inadvertently touches Cass's necklace and something starts to happen. Cass decides that he is going to take over Dustin's life and starts by buying him new clothes. He also is keeping secrets from Dustin and basically locks him up in his home. I understand the reasoning why Cass does what he does as he is trying to keep Dustin safe, but he needed to sit down and explain everything, all at once. He even goes so far as to cancel his lease and this is all within hours of meeting. The book is a rather quick read and we learn some of Cass's background. OMG he is millions of years old, but looks like he is in his twenties and owns the entire city. Cass is an omega and Dustin is an Alpha. Cass also has a son and how Cass ended up on the human realm was saddening. He refused to accept his son's mate and got the boot for basically being closed minded. I hope we get to delve deeper into that who arena. The book ends on a HFN with the possibility of a HEA. I can't wait until the next book in the series.

I’ve been looking forward to this book but sadly, it didn’t quite meet my expectations.

The story dragged a lot and there wasn’t much going on. Cass and Dustin kept having the same conversation over and over again and sadly, it became rather tedious. The characters and their bond wasn’t developed sufficiently. Dustin went from being wary and timid to becoming a dom in the bedroom which took me by surprise.

This book was hit and miss for me.

Attitude

I was loving this until about 70% in when Dustin and his attitude took the shine off it. He had to do the one thing everyone told him not to. Was being kept in the castle that bad?
I really liked Cass and felt sorry for him. He tried to make things nice and had been alone for so long. He couldn't seem to do right for doing wrong

This book intrigued me from the moment I read the blurb, so as I opened the first page and read to the very last I was enthralled, drawn into a totally new dynamic between humans and elves in a totally new universe. I really enjoyed this story about how working through all the difficulties that Devon and Casersis faced not only being from two different races, then adding different backgrounds and life styles to prove that love can win at least for now.

I have mixed feelings with this book. First when I saw it, I wanted to read it, but I had a feeling that it wouldn't be as good as I wanted it to be. So I put it aside. Then I saw this book recommended all the time and everyone said good things about it, so I thought, yeah, probably my mind was playing me and I should read it, so I picked it up and started to read.

The first half of the book was really good, and I really enjoyed the story and the characters too. But after a while it got boring and the characters weren't as exciting as I first thought. I struggled with the book, I wanted to DNF it, but I wanted to stay and read in a hope of a great ending.
Let me tell you, I should have DNF it and read something else.
It wasn't bad, but wasn't really good either.

Flat and boring characters, the plot is empty and not at all exciting. I wanted to love the Stockholm Syndrome at least, but that was a joke too. The romance was empty, the erotica unsatisfying for me.

I'm sorry, but this wasn't for my liking at all. I loved the first half, but after 50% the book just wasn't working.

Slow going, painstaking

The elements of a good book are here but the story is weighed down by constant misunderstanding, extremely weird clingy-ness, constant bickering and serious co-dependence.
I just got so frustrated with the two MC's.
There are so many other ways this story could have gone what with the hint at the elf world, the history, the enmity with Erastus but instead all they did was constantly piss each other off, then cling to each other for dear life!! In one scene Cass gets pushed away for his constant hovering, he goes into a complete tailspin over being shunned (his world is ending at this point, how he survives lord only knows!), this then leads to about 3 pages of him being mothered and "loved" and coddled causing the exact situation that caused the problem......rinse repeat.
Sorry I just CAN'T. Maybe I'm triggered! Oh dear. I loved the other series, with this....I just can't.
The blurb for the next book is even more depressing....I'm sorry it's a solid pass for me....

I was going to do a full review with quotes and stuff, but this book has already taken up more time than it should with me.

DNF at 69%

♦️ Cass didn't feel like a guy who's been around for millenia. Felt very immature.

♦️ The pacing is break neck fast (I think we got the first "I luv u" in chapter 4 or something). And I know this is omegaverse fated mates, but this felt like über fast insta-love even for that.
It slowed a little towards the middle, but not... well? Like the emotional speed is still way further than the story has really given in a right to be, and the B plot is dragging and feeling incredibly unimportant.

♦️ I did like the dynamic of older, richer, confident, inhuman Omega with "human", younger, poor Alpha. That was original and I liked the "role reversal" of it.

Final score: 1,5 stars

I'm having a hard time with my review for this book. I think if I had read this BEFORE I read the novella Soulbond: The Omega's Assassin which introduces us to this universe, I may have enjoyed it a bit more. I kept looking for the things from the previous book that I loved in this one, like the connection to a soul mount. The novella ended too quickly for me, I wanted so much more, where The Elven King's Captive dragged in the middle a bit. The same thing was discussed in different ways over and over again. Dustin feels like Cass is suffocating him by keeping him cooped up inside his house. Cass tells him he needs more time and continues to control Dustin's life like when he cancels his apartment lease without asking. It reminded me of my husband and I always having the same argument, just using different words.

There is SO much potential in this series. The worldbuilding is very creative and I want to know more about elves and where they come from. I also had no idea this was going to be a series which continued focusing on the same couple. Book 2 is also about Dustin and Cass, though this book leaves them at a pretty content place. I'm hoping Vesper explores more with Cass and his relationship with his son. I want Cass to be able to go to his home world which he desperately misses and be able to show Dustin where elves hail from. Like Dustin, I can sense how lonely Cass is and I want him to be happy again.

While Cass was an overbearing omega at times, Dustin was a whiny alpha. Cass did everything he could think of to make Dustin comfortable. There was a real reason why Dustin couldn't just gallivant out and about besides Cass wanting him all to himself. You would think Dustin would be more grateful that Cass worked so hard to make him happy, instead of just locking him in a room to protect them both. The one time Dustin finally ventured off without Cass' help, he ended up almost getting killed. Yet he still complained to Cass immediately after the danger had passed that he wanted to go out more. I was like what!?

It took almost until the end of the book for Dustin to actually admit to Cass that he didn't trust him, but that he decided he finally was going to. I admit, Cass was almost too kind that I was worried he was all of a sudden going to flip a switch and turn out to be this evil elf hellbent on well...evil things I guess. I'm happy my worries were unfounded and though I had some niggles I still enjoyed the premise of the story and look forward to more books in this world.

Casersis is an elf. Forced out of his home, living with humans for time untold, accepting his fate. Dustin is human, until he’s not. Being changed into an elf against his will by Casersis’ magic. It’s not how he saw his life playing out but he is powerless against the fate that brought them together. As they bond he’s more confused than ever.

Alpha and omega happening here. Dustin is the alpha which put an interesting twist into the story. Some angst but just mostly confusion between what Dustin wants and what Casersis needs.

World building isn’t exactly lacking but could of used a little more. I have questions about Dustins acceptance of poverty that weren’t answered. Casersis’ age was also kind of unfathomable to me.

Good strong main characters and Casersis’ staff/family were a huge part of the story, rounding it out nicely. Ended a a good note. Not sure when the next book releases, but I’ll be there waiting.

1,5 stars rounded up, to be fair, the biggest plus for this omegaverse futuristic fantasy/sci-fi story is the fact that the alpha is the younger, 20yo hero, and the older hero who is several millenia old, is the omega in the relationship. Honestly, the premise was there, but the execution fell short in my eyes. Insta-something between the heroes, random timejumps - e.g. the first HALF of the story is about the first 24 hours (even less than that) and then we have a couple of randome week-or two weeks time jumps. More consistent time jumps would've helped a great deal.

Also, the writing could use an editor... or even a beta who would be a bit... stricter, perhaps? about the pacing and wording in the story.

Will not continue with the story. Apparently the story for this couple continues in THREE more books.

The Elven King’s Captive sounded quite intriguing from the blurb. It’s set in a futuristic world, something rare for an omegaverse story. It is also a features elven heroes, again, something rare for omegaverse. I was also intrigued by Cass, who is insanely wealthy, powerful, and older than time itself, being the omega, while the 20-year-old Dustin who is new to this world is the alpha. So there were so many interesting elements built into the set up here, but unfortunately, the story never really developed for me beyond that.

I really enjoy Vesper’s writing and find myself intrigued by the worlds she creates. While I really did enjoy this new world and the characters, it just didn’t quite grab me the way I’m used to with Vesper’s works. I think it spent too much time on the will they/won’t they and rebasing of the same arguments, and the world building fell to the wayside. I’ll definitely continue the series because the potential is there and I know Vesper will ultimately make me fall in love.

Awe sweet 20 year old human Dustin has his life altered when he literally glass into Casersis. Casersis is the Elvin king that has been banished to exile.

Secrets are kept from Dustin while he is basically kept captive and his life is no longer what he thought. Cass is taking charge of Dustin life and feels like he’s caged in.

This was a good read. I look forward to jumping into book 2 to see how their story continues.

I wanted to like this recommended urban fantasy story, but the wishy-washy-ness of the characters just got to me by about 70% or so in. I did finish the story, but there just wasn't quite enough for me to continue the series.

OMG!!! I’m totally in love with Casersis, and I kinda like Dustin. Actually I’d like to throttle Dustin sometimes, but I do understand his dilemma.
Excellent world building and Mpreg is possible according to the blurb we won’t be seeing it in this series which for me is a bit of a bummer, but it’s not my book...
I will still recommend this book for those who enjoy fantasy. Happy reading

Elven Captive.

I just finished this book and it is good. I am giving it 4/5. Casersis is the Elven king in exile. He has spent thousands of years years wanting a mate but he has yet to find him until Dustin falls literally into him. Dustin is a hard working construction worker is is used to not having a lot and working hard for anything. Hey his life changes when he falls onto Casersis and touches his necklace. That touch sparks his change into an elf. Casersis sense what is happening and virtually imprisons Dustin for his own protection. Casersis does not want that knowledge to fall into the wrong hands like the government. But of course Dustin rebels and fully does not realize the danger that he is in. Casersis is in love with Dustin but Dustin is still adjusting to his new life as an elf. There will be a lot of conversations these two men need to have before they can move forward in a relationship. I want to read the next book.

An accidental start

This is definitely an interesting series. Mixing together a slightly futuristic world, omega/alpha dynamics, and hidden elves sounds a bit odd but it does work well! There is a decent amount of groundwork that has to be laid for it but that is done without being boring to read in this book and promises to allow for more story in the future books.

Dustin and Casersis meet by literally colliding into one another, but it binds them together in an unexpected way. With Dustin being someone that Casersis has long been looking for and changes already happening, Casersis quickly whisks Dustin away, whether that is what he wants or not. It puts a major strain on the relationship and sets up the difficult power dynamic of this book. Casersis is ancient and has lots of money and power, so he is used to making unilateral decisions, not to mention he needs to protect Dustin with the things going on. Dustin has been going it alone for a while, is young without much money or power, but prefers to make his own way. They really clash over things when this all comes up, especially because behind it all is the alpha/omega power balance, where Dustin is alpha and Casersis is omega, turning all of it on its head. It is truly complicated and something that comes up more than once.

That this book chose to being up the issues with the omega/alpha relationship was really interesting as well. As an alpha Dustin feels a need to provide and protect Casersis, while Casersis seeks comfort and acceptance from Dustin. The need can become almost too much, with Casersis not even being able to leave Dustin for work. While it can be true that a person can change priorities in a relationship and want to do less work, Casersis finds he can't even focus on any work away from Dustin, which isn't healthy. Meanwhile Dustin had been independent and suddenly has someone who wants to be around all the time. Again, a possible change in a relationship, but Casersis wants almost unhealthy levels of togetherness. Dustin finds himself needing space and time, even just time where he can do things without it being a rejection of Caseris, which is really difficult and goes against this nature. It puts a strain on things that are trying to develop. It was quite fascinating as usually this type of relationship is shown as no problem, but this story instead really gets into how this is a huge shift and how the codependent need to never be apart can be unhealthy and make lofe difficult to figure out. It is sure to be an ongoing issues in the books moving forward and it will be interesting to see how it gets resolved.

A well formed start to a series with some intriguing circumstances, this promises to be a good series!

4.5 stars rounded up

This is a book that has a little bit of several genres, and it works out pretty well! First, you've got Elves, so Fantasy; add a futuristic touch here and there for some Sci-fi; and, last, but certainly not least, it's Omegaverse, AO in this book, where mpreg is possible, but not portrayed here. Vesper creates vivid imagery for this atypical example of AO dynamics.

Casersis, the Evin king, is an ageless omega far from home. His character is well developed, and we learn much about his back story throughout the book. He is accustomed to making decisions, and with the chance of gaining a new companion, he makes snap decisions that really weren't his to make.

Dustin lost his family at a young age and has worked hard to get where he is; which isn't exactly a good place to be. He's a construction worker and enjoys his job, but walking home and trying to avoid accusations from the higher classes is dangerous. When Dustin falls forward, the last thing he expected was to touch an amulet and land in the arms of a beautiful man.

Cass knows what it means when Dustin's hand scars from the charm, but he keeps his cards close to the vest in order for all his machinations to have time to come to fruition. He dresses Dustin up and tries to wine and dine him, but although the instincts are there, Cass knows the results of his actions are most likely not going to be well received.

In actuality, this is not a typical "captive" situation, either. Although Dustin is extremely unhappy and argumentative, there are no bars or locks keeping him locked up. It's for his own safety, which he learns eventually, but he is enjoying the hot sexy times, and something inside does not like Cass to be hurt or unhappy. Whether by force or not, Dustin must remain at Cass's castle.

With a cast of secondary characters fleshing out the story, quite comically at times, this story is a very interesting start to a unique and intriguing series. I think that HFN is the best way to leave things, and though not a cliffhanger, I'm definitely ready for the next installment.

Happy reading!
