Crown and Crest #1

Knight from the Ashes

Rate this book
With single-minded determination, Henrik has worked toward gaining his knighthood so he may rise above the lowly station in which he was born. But just when the coveted position is within his grasp, he’s tasked with a mission that proves to be far more difficult than expected—secretly keeping a watchful eye on Lady Clover, a nobleman’s daughter with a sharp tongue and a knack for starting fights.

Clover, too, has one goal in life, and it has nothing to do with joining dull and dry Henrik on his supply run to the northern barracks. Why the blacksmith’s son is so determined to keep her close, she has no idea. They bicker and fight, and if Clover were to find a troll pit, she would certainly dump Henrik into it.

By the time they reach their destination, they are more than ready to be rid of each other. But something is amiss in the northern mountains. The usually quiet aynauths are on the move, with a bloodthirsty agenda of killing the peaceful Woodmoor elves.

Left with no choice but to team up, Henrik and Clover investigate the strange happenings and uncover a sinister plot against the crown. Together, they have a chance to save the kingdom—but only if they can keep from killing each other first…

Highly enjoyable and engaging storytelling. I loved the world Ms. Tapscott has created with a fun mix of characters and fantastical creatures. Clover and Henrick make the perfect leads, both are strong and caring and total opposites personality wise. A good "grumpy-sunshine" pairing. Enjoyed their banter and how their relationship grows. Its book one in a four-book series, so the romance side of things is slow-burn, but in a delicious sort of way. I enjoyed every moment of the story, a little miffed at the somewhat abrupt ending but happy that all four books are out and I can binge them right away.

Definitely recommend to fans of the genre or to those wanting to try out the high fantasy genre!

Shari is brilliant. And this series? Written by her and her husband, it’s so fun to get the povs of both the guy and the girl and know it’s how a guy and a girl would think! It’s amazing and I’m so excited to read book two!

It's a new start to a new series from one of my favorite authors! And guess what? She co-wrote this one with her husband. That a new dynamic.

So I have some conflicting emotions here after finishing this book and that's mostly due to the cliffhanger ending. I really don't love to be left hanging and I'm not a very patient person when it comes to waiting for books. I get frustrated when there is no closure and yet, I keep coming back to these books and these authors because the stories are so good. I just can't help it.

This book is all about the adventure. Henrik is collecting people as he goes, it seems, and unwillingly, I might add. But I really like this fun group of characters because they all have well defined personalities and are so endearing. I think they are all growing on Henrik as well. This book is really about the growing friendships between them and the growing plot. There is no real romance and no kissing although Clover and Henrik definitely have an attraction to each other. I call this the "laying the foundation" story and it's a good one. I'll be coming back for more because, well, cliffhanger. The next book cannot come out soon enough.

Content: mild violence, mild peril

I have so many conflicting emotions right now. This story has been one big adventure. Full of fantastical creatures and landscapes. It is truly a work of art, as many of Shari Tapscott’s fantasy novels are!
I have really enjoyed seeing the story from both Clover and Henrik’s perspectives. They are both such intriguing characters.
Clover, a lady in waiting for Princess Camilla. She is easily one of the kindest and good hearted people. But shes know how to fight and shoot a bow and arrow better than most soldiers. There is much more to her than the Lady seen at court, and it was so much fun seeing those traits come to the surface.
Henrik, a commander in the Kings army is determined to get his seal to become a Knight. He is one of the most honourable men there are, yet one of few words and reveals even less in his expressions. He’s difficult to get to know unless he lets you in.
And then as events unfold he finds himself picking up strays on his newest assignment. First is the kings nephew, a talkative young man eager to learn. Then there is Lady Clover, who’s reasons for joining their little adventure are a bit more complicated and you can find that out for yourself ;). And an Elf, who loves all living things and values his peoples traditions.
They are such an odd mix to go on an ‘adventure’ with but it made for such an entertaining read.
And then that ending! Ahhh! I’m dying to know what’s happening. It was over all too soon for me.

Book 2 will be released in November, so just a few months and we get to read on and kick ourselves again for yet another nail biting cliffhanger. But we will keep on doing it because Shari Tapscott knows how to write a fantastic book and it’s totally worth it.

Did you know? This book is not only written by Shari but her husband, Jake, as well! They have been working on this story idea since 2018 and I must say, they work exceptionally well together. The different perspectives and voices really come through in the story and just brought that extra bit of life to the story.

Content: clean
Romance: it’s book 1- the romance isn’t so much romance and more that tension and almost kisses. It’s pretty squeaky clean in this one.
Language: none.
Violence: fighting monsters.

This was just fun! If you don't like cliff hangers wait till the series is all out. I am stuck after book 2 and pretty sad about it. I wished I had waited. Just fun story lines and fun characters! I just enjoy the ride these books take me on. I really full pulled away from the real world. This one is a slow build but not boring. I had no idea where this book would go and I just hung on for the ride. Lots of fun romantic tension in this one:}

Fan-freaking-tastic!

The fantasy world building was masterful, the characters entirely endearing, the chemistry off the charts, the plot engaging, the pacing perfect, the writing immersive.

Can I just say- this is by far my favorite heroine characterization!! She is the perfect balance! Refined while still having spunk, noble-born but also adventurous, enjoys comforts without coming off as pampered, sweet with a hint of stubbornness, feminine with some competitiveness, courageous but not impervious to fear, smart and also flirty, confident without being arrogant. LOVED HER. And the hero- he was five stars, too.

Love, love, loved it. Can’t wait to start #2. This ended on a mild cliffhanger that nicely straddled the line between stressful and satisfying.

Well done, Ms. Tapscott!

Content-
Language- no swearing
Sex- no sex scene or talk of sex. The sexual tension, however, was very high. This is a great example of a clean book that preserves the high chemistry.
Narrators- fabulous! The male narrator had a unique style that I’m surprised I loved so much. It totally worked! And his accent- chef’s kiss. The female narrator had a great accent too- just a hint of one that made the female MC seem refined but also relatable.
Cover- love it! Especially how handsome Henrik is. ;)

How I rated the series:

#1 Knight from the Ashes - 5 stars
#2 Forged in Cursed Flames - 5 stars
#3 Fall of the Ember Throne - 5 stars
#4 Rise of the Phoenix King - 5 stars

DNF the series. This is not a story for impressionable teen girls. The female lead is morally gray. She tries on many occasions to seduce the virtuous hero. In book 3 she finally succeeds in corrupting his morals.

I have been eagerly awaiting Knight From the ashes. I was super into the Riven Kingdoms Series and remembered just how good the beginning of that series was. So I was thinking, “Shari L. Tapscott can start a series real good. This is going to be fun.”

Well, not so much. I was surprised because it’s rated so high already. Higher than all the Riven Kingdoms books. Which I very much disagree with now after reading it.

First, what I liked. I enjoyed the world building. The different elves, the trolls, the history and how the land was divided after the last war. I found all of that interesting. The descriptions of the world were done well; I felt I could see it clearly.

What I wasn’t interested in were the main characters and the romance. The romance was difficult to enjoy. Clover, though seeming smart, competent and resourceful becomes cringeworthy forgetting dream from reality multiple times. That almost lost me while reading. It was terribly embarrassing and not the funny element I think they were going for. It cheapened Clover’s character. Made her seem ridiculous. I didn’t understand why or even how the romance was happening. It felt forced and strange.

The story in general was slow and lacking in action for being about a Knight. Any action that did happen was quick and no one ever really gets hurt too badly so it didn’t feel dangerous or exciting because it all was too safe. The writing was too safe.

I will not be reading the rest of this series. I recommend (re)reading The Riven Kingdoms Series instead.

This book wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. It was very mid. The world is interesting but I feel like it focused way too much on the romance I would have loved to learn more about the world and I feel like the plot relied too much on the romance as well. It ends inclined of a cliffhanger but I'm unsure as of yet if I'm going to keep reading the series. It's a good audiobook to have on in the background while cleaning or doing other chores.

Hilarious, lighthearted, witty. I loved the characters (this has the most chaotic and charming traveling company I've ever seen) and this slow-burn romance. Can't wait to see where this story goes.

That…was SO GOOD!! Ahh I love all of Shari L Tapscott’s books and this was no exception!! Knight From the Ashes was a fun, exciting, wondrous adventure that I absolutely loved!! 😍😍😍 The world building, the main characters, the side characters (I mean who didn’t love Pranmore? 😂), the story/plot, all of it was amazing!! 😍

I absolutely adore enemies to lovers and Shari knows how to bring all the chemistry while keeping it clean, which I appreciate so much! Henrik and Clover fit so well together and I enjoyed their every interaction. 😍

I thought it was so cool how Shari and her husband wrote this series together, and am SO excited to see what happens next!! Like that ending’s got me dying for the next book. 😅😆

Intriguing

I love the world building. So many types of fae. I enjoyed the adventure, the humor, and the flirting.

The romance has me wanting to throw something. It’s worse than a love triangle. It’s a love square at least! Why is everyone going after the person who is wrong for them!

I'll talk about this series as a whole without spoilers.

If you want a good enemies-to-lovers story with actual bickering and behind the back commenting of one another (not in a bad but a funny way) then definitely read this book.

It was so funny how the guy couldn't let go of the one comment he heard the girl make and I'm pretty sure he will take it to he's grave XD.

I liked the personality of our main characters and we have a DUAL POV! There were many other characters (I recommend you write them down because even if we don't see some of them, some become important in the next books) that I LOVED so much and in the end it was actually very hard to let go of them. They all have their own personality and race and when they all form a friend group it just becomes a gaggle show. Seriously, you're gonna laugh your butt off.

The first two books were my favorite because in these ones we have the most bickering and disliking of one another (but most in the first one).

The last two books started to get more serious but they were still good. I just enjoyed the first two books more.

It was clean and the tension was off the charts! By the way, there is a love triangle but it really is funny and somehow makes it better.

If you want romance, humor, funny friendships but also a good plot and adventure, then this is a book series for you!

I love everything she writes, but this was different from what I expected

Don't get me wrong - this is a good story but I was expecting something more like the Indiana Jones-flavored adventures in "Moss Flower Orchid" or even "Obsidian Queen" (from her Shannon Lynn Cook pseudonym). This had a flavor & pacing more like her "Forest of Firelight" series - which is also a very well done series but different from the others in that it's a bit more sober & it also had a slower start).

This book IS an enjoyable story, & I'm definitely looking forward to the 2nd book, but its character & plot development felt more carefully... calculated or controlled. Henrik & Clover are sympathetic but took some time to fully warm up to.

I want to get lost in the story while I'm reading it, not be distanced from it by text-evoked images of constructing the outline & worldbuilding on a whiteboard. I missed that sense that the authors were letting loose, having fun with it & enjoying themselves. But maybe it's just me.

Hopefully things will smooth out & pick up in the 2nd book.

*Romance level: passionate kisses, heroine considers using the hero for a short term fling, but nothing graphic

I haven’t read a lot of Ms. Tapscott’s fairytale series, but I was very excited to read this one! She co-wrote it with her husband, and it is full of elves, knights, and magic. There were so many complex characters, and I’m excited to see them grow. I had some trouble understanding them, but hopefully, the rest of the series will clear things up. The story was really interesting, and I’m sensing some set up for the rest of the series.
All Henrik wants to do is gain his seal and become a knight. It’s the only way to finally be a part of the nobility. But when he’s forced to look out for the exasperating lady in waiting, Clover, he begins to wonder if it’s actually worth it. Clover drives him insane both with her tendency to pick fights and the fact that she’s stunningly beautiful. All Clover wants to do is be out of Princess Camellia’s thumb. She has no time for dull and dry Henrik, and she has no idea why he’s keeping her so close. But when strange and dark things start to happen during their supply run, they will have to work together to save their kingdom. If they can keep from killing each other first.
Henrik was a very complex character. He was a blacksmith’s son, and he wanted to rise above that. He was very noble, but he could be uncaring at times. I loved his relationship with his squire. He was incredibly kind to him even though he was frustrated with him most of the time too. I didn’t really like how he treated the princess though. He didn’t seem to understand how it was wrong to marry her if he didn’t love her. But it was a different time, and love had never been a part of his life. That’s why it was so hard for him when he started to have feelings for Clover. I loved how Clover pulled the fun side out of him, and it was cute how they joked around a little with each other. It always felt believable though for his more reserved personality.
I had a harder time understanding Clover’s character because she seemed quite selfish at times. She and Camellia did not get along, so she was understandably upset with her. But she didn’t seem to care about anything other than gaining control over Camellia. I think her character will develop as time goes on though because this is only the first book. Her spunk was a lot of fun, and she definitely had a lot of courage in her. I’m intrigued and interested to see how the authors will grow her.
The storyline was fascinating in this, and I loved how you could see the history of the land. I’m really excited to see more of these different races. The authors have done a fantastic job of creating a gorgeous fantasy world that also felt real. All the characters were believable, and some of the side characters were so fun! I’m interested to see how the different politics will play out, and I hope we will get to see more than the human’s perspective. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic fantasy, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series holds!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Shari Tapscot’s world of little boulder-like gnomes, tall, willowy elves and quarrelsome humans is easy to imagine. I enjoyed her central character, Clover, who wished to be an adventuresome woman but could not overcome her love of upper-class comforts and safety. She was refreshing after all the fantasy heroines today who are stronger, faster, and more competent than any man or monster they meet. I could not decide, though, if she enjoyed being a sexy flirt, or if she was really a naïve girl. The text is full of snarky comebacks between characters, some quite funny, which added to their personalities. Most were developed as predictable, almost flat characters.

There were aspects of the plot that developed awkwardly. More than that, the “slow burn” romance was really the focus of the story, which I found annoying. I was hoping for a richer tale.

A reader who loves stories of men and women who stare at each other’s lips chapter after chapter, wondering if they dare kiss, well, you’ll like this one! Just not my cup of fantasy.

Y'all. I have been waiting MONTHS to read this. I kept having other things to read--things with deadlines or responsibility attached. But I persevered, longingly looking to the day I would FINALLY finish all of those and be able to start this.

It didn't disappoint. It was, in fact, amazing and LOVELY and hilarious. I love Henrik and Clover and Pranmore and Bartholomew and literally every other character(except Camellia. Hate that chick.). I laughed out loud multiple times, and the swoon was through the roof. Can I just say that Shari comes up with the most interesting ways to interrupt kisses? It's a talent. A cruel, cruel talent.
But I digress.
Henrik is tasked with keeping a sneaky eye on Clover as they journey north together to unravel a mystery, but OF COURSE he is drawn in and starts (somewhat unwillingly) keeping heart eyes on her instead, because that boy is SMITTEN.
The mystery was great too. And the pace was neck-breaking. I inhaled the book. Seriously, I have no complaints. I'm already halfway through the next book. If you love warm swoony moments that never cross into spice, and hilarious stories with the same sort of humor as KM Shea's, you should definitely read this.

I’m already hooked!

I always know I’m going to get a fantastic story by Shari L Tapscott, but I couldn’t have prepared myself for the combination of her and author Jake Andrews. This epic fantasy adventure started off immediately with action and adventure, and I’ve had such a hard time putting it down. I love the alternating perspectives between the protagonists Henrik and Clover, and oh how their romantic moments made my toes curl!! The supporting characters and overall fantasy world the authors have created have drawn me in and already I’m dying to get to the next book in the series!

I bought the audiobook because I have read 5 or 6 of Tapscott's books and I became a big fan of the female voice actor on this one, Shakira. The male voiceover actor is so terrible only just 15 minutes in that I hope I can get a refund. He performs like I'm sure people think Selena Gomez in Emilia Pérez did, in that you're saying the words with an emotion and your voice isn't bad but there is a disconnect like maybe you don't get what the words mean. His intensity was constant and made zero sense. Yeeeikes.

Fun! Really liked the characters. Despite what the synopsis says, this is NOT enemies to lovers style romance—they are not enemies. They don't even try to kill each other, so at best, it's distrust slash dislike to lovers at best.

False advertising aside, I genuinely enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest. Tapscott is quickly becoming an author I look forward to reading more of! The romances are cute, the characters fun, and the books have a good dose of action.

Firstly, I just have to get this out of the way: I hate this cover. Not only does it have a slightly cartoonish look, but poor Clover looks likes she’s in desperate need of a good bra, or corset or something! Her girls are headed in two different directions, and in serious need of some support. There’s no way she’s traipsing about the woods like that.

That aside, this was a good first installment of what feels like a promising new series. I’m pretty sure I’ve read every fantasy book by this author, and there are some definite similarities between this, and her other works. Some of it—even the phrasing—is a bit predictable now. I think her co-author has helped to add something new to the writing that helped to freshen things up a bit. There’s been a lot of effort made in the world building, including the free world guide. There are a lot of book-specific terms, but it doesn’t feel inaccessible to the reader. Tapscott has always had a natural way of introducing things without tedious info dumps.

I like Clover quite a bit. She feels a little like myself: sometimes fierce, but sometimes just wanting someone to take care of you. Tough, but also wanting creature comforts. She’s overall a pretty cheerful person, but has plenty of sass. I also like Henrik. I admire his in-born nobility, and honor. While I can’t really understand either of their motivations to marry people they don’t love, I’m sure that’s part of the plot; getting over that. I do kinda hate the being constantly interrupted right when you’re about to kiss/confess/clear up a major misunderstanding trope though. It happens like three times here. Bartholomew is adorable and naive, and that’s written well, as are Pranmore’s quirks. They all really do come together in the end, and it’s fun to watch.

A lot of the tense scenes weren’t terribly tense, especially the battle at the end. I would’ve liked to see a bit more action, especially because SO much of the book was traveling, and camping, and then more traveling and camping. It would’ve been nice if that had been a bit more broken up. Overall though, I’m intrigued with how it ended, and looking forward to the next book. I’m hoping to see more Ayan, and maybe Maisel. The dark magic plot line holds promise, so I’ll definitely being reading #2.

This series is amazing! There is plenty of adventure and romance!

The characters are wonderful but as I kept reading the series I didn't understand why everyone is in love with Clover or "Calendula" (You won't know that reference unless you've read the 2nd book in the series). It was seriously annoying.

The chemistry between her and Henrik is swoon worthy but I do love the balance between not making it strictly a romance nor an adventure novel. Shari did a phenomenal job blending the two into this series.

This was a fun start to the series and I look forward to continuing on with the rest of the books. Shari L. Tapscott and Jake Andrews did some great, detailed world building that any fantasy lover is sure to love and there was also a good dose of romantic tension between Henrik and Clover that kept me turning the pages. The book has a nice set-up for promises to be an action packed continuation. As always, Tapscott nicely combines tension and humor, giving a story with enough action to keep things moving forward and some laugh out loud moments. I look forward to reading more!

Close but no cigar

This story might be more interesting to middle schoolers. Some parts of the book made me happy, like instead of playing stupid when Clover found the note, she admitted it straight away and didn't try to make Henrik feel guilty about it. It was really mature and a breathe of fresh air in the romance world. However, there was a lot of tedious repetition on how the duo can never be and woe is me. I liked Clover and Henrik, but their story was more on the cliche side. If you are looking for an easy breezy romance, this one may be for you.

Oh, wow. I knew this book was going to be good, but it blew me away! You know a book will be good when the book opens with the main guy locked in battle with a jackalope (no, really, it is more of a battle than it sounds).

The authors have created a fun world with several races of elves, including a deer-like race with utterly adorable members. Gnomes and fantasy creatures abound. Not to mention political intrigue and a devious princess.

The audiobook is amazing with dual narrators! And this book is clean and fun!
