Spy X #4

Tunnel Vision

Rate this book
An exciting new spy series for kids ages 8-12 from master storyteller Peter Lerangis. Twins Andrew and Evie must decode clues that lead to their missing mother, a spy on the run from a gov't agency.

Andrew and Evie have found Mom at last. But she had to come out of hiding to get to the twins, and now the Company is on to her aliases. There's only one Mom has to go underground again, and this time, she's bringing Andrew and Evie with her.

The twins are used to moving to new places, so at first taking on new identities doesn't seem like that big a deal. It's kind of fun, actually. But soon Andrew and Evie realize they're not just leaving behind another town -- they're leaving behind themselves, their personalities. And there's one more thing, too... Pop.

I have always loved spy stuff and codes and things like that. So I picked up this book, started to read, and fell in love with it. After I finished it, I went looking hungrily for the rest of the series. I got a hold of the first book. And realized that Tunnel Vision was book number 4! No wonder the first book barely made sense to the other book! I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

In this book Evie and Andrew find a secret HQ for their mom's comany. they meet new characters and end up having to change their names. Evie's is Jen, and Andrews is Obi. But the end is a total cliff hanger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the first book as a child and always wondered what happened next. As an adult, I tracked the series down and finally got to the end.

As I’m reading and getting closer and closer to the last page, I’m more and more confused as to how this is going to resolve in so few pages. Spoiler alert: it strangely doesn’t. The series is left on a cliff hanger, suggesting there could be more books. But after looking into it, it appears those four were it.

I am wildly disappointed. Even as an adult I enjoyed reading these and I was so looking forward to continue the story and see what happens. It was a great series and I would have loved to read them all as a child. So while it’s great, I’m knocking off a star because I am disappointed in how it just seems to stop in the middle of an unfinished plot.

I picked this up from my kid's discards and started to read it, then realized that it's book # 4 in the series. Truth is, I wanted to love this: I'm a big fan of Spy Kids and other kids' books about spies. But I found all the codes ... boring. The kids would be right in the middle of the action and suddenly be given a code to decipher if they wanted to get to the next step, and they drop everything to do some serious thinking (sometimes for a few hours) to try to figure it out. So it was a start-and-stop mystery, over and over, and it killed the pacing of the novel. I would not read more.

I did enjoy this one. My suspicions were correct. I can't remember if there is another book after or not... If there isn't there should be and if there is, I will find it.

My real rating: 4.5.

How I feel after finishing this book:

Yes, the ending was okay, I guess. But it left it open for another book at least! And there is no sign of a follow-up book or series. At least the twins stayed with Mom and didn't go with Pop. When Evie first separated herself from Andrew, leaving Andrew with Mom, I was like, "Evie, what are you doing?!" But now I realize that if she hadn't gone with Pop, then she wouldn't have discovered the final piece of Mad Mike's code so the rest of his message could be deciphered. She also wouldn't have met Yohanna Austin.

For some reason, the two characters I felt connected to in this book were: Evie (of course, since we share a mutual name, even though my nickname is spelled "Evy" and not "Evie", and her full name is spelled "Evelyn", not "Evelynn") and - surprisingly - Mad Mike. Mad Mike's character was a bit shady and mysterious at first, when Andrew first spotted him in The Pit. But as time went on (like, a chapter later), when Mad Mike went back to the Wall's house to retrieve the evidence left behind by Andrew and Evie, I felt strangely drawn to his character. He was quick, witty, ingenius, and mysterious. I was sad when there wasn't a whole lot of him in the book. Man, if I could think of codes like Peter Lerangis has, I would totally write a fanfiction about Mad Mike. But I could barely follow Evie and Andrew's logic in solving the codes, much less actually think them up. And it is said of Mad Mike in the book that he "lives and breathes codes." So I couldn't very well write a fanfiction about him without having intricate codes. Ugh. Oh well.

Anyway, this series was amazing. I gave this last book a higher rating for not having the disobedience that was present in the first three books because, this time, they were trying to survive, not just follow the clues to find their mom. But it still lacked a half star because of the ending that wasn't finished.

Oh, the last thing I wanted to say: When it was stated that Evie had a "birthmark" behind her right knee, I wanted to squeal. I have a birthmark on my right knee! It was just so surprisingly similar !

Note to the author: Please, please, please, please, PLEASE write another book in this series, or start a new series to continue this series!

This is the fourth book in a great series. Andrew and Evie find their mom after almost a year away from them. They find her in a mysterious maze of tunnels. Then the find out that their dad [as in the previous book:] continues to chase them in the tunnels. It was also revealed that the mother and father of Andrew and Evie are working against each other. It's a very good book.

Finally, Andrew and Evie have found their mom. They now must foil the plot of The Company, an evil organization that's trying to take over the world. Peter Lerangis finishes up the Spy X series with a bang!

Lerangis was a natural to be part of the 39 Clues series. I loved these stories of a pair of children trying to solve codes and clues to get reunited with their mother.

Evie and Andrew have finally found their mother. But now they must choose between the Resistance and the Company, and their choice isn't as black and white as it seems.... I enjoyed reading this book but was disappointed that the series didn't continue with more books.
