This book was pretty interesting. I rarely read non-fiction but I picked this one up and read it over time. It was nice because it breaks it up into bite sized portions of information that you can absorb at your own pace. It deals with all sorts of subjects you will encounter in life such as love, family, money, health, parenting, green living etc.

I will say that it does get repetitive at some parts but I also learned some new things that I didn’t know and it was cool because all the facts had the information to back them up. I feel like this would be a good book to have on your coffee table that you could pick up from time to time and read a little bit more.

After reading this, I consciously think more about how I react to certain situations and how I go about my day to day life and what I can do to improve it after learning some new things!

When it comes to our relationships, work, health, or well-being as a whole, we often look for ideas and advice to improve our lives. And we like advice that cuts to the chase and is brief, but helpful.

So that’s why I was interested in reading Ayesha Ratnayake’s book Cheat Sheets for Life: Over 750 Hacks for Health, Happiness, and Success.

Ratnayake has been an avid reader since she was a child. And she credits her father for encouraging her to read non-fiction. This led her to be curious on various topics, including how to make our lives more manageable.

Cheat Sheets for Life is divided into 18 chapters on topics like everyday happiness, parenting, work, leadership, and green living. Under each topic are sub-topics with hacks you can implement on any issue that perplexes you and you may need some helpful guidance.

Cheat Sheets for Life is a book that can be read from beginning to end or read by subject. Having issues with insomnia, I was definitely interested in the hacks on getting a good night’s sleep. I’m also proud to say there are some hacks I already use like meditation.

Cheat Sheets for Life is written in a down-to-earth and audience-friendly style. Ratnayake is personable and empathetic. And Ratnayake didn’t just come up with these hacks. She put a lot of effort on researching these hacks. She even provides resources at the end of the book.

I found Cheat Sheets for Life to be a very informative and beneficial book. I’m sure my readers will, too.

There’s something for everyone in Cheat Sheets for Life, which I’d describe as a capsule-sized collection of useful, actionable information on personal development and overall wellness.

I found the chapters on Sleep, Emotional Resilience, Health, Learning, and Productivity to be most useful because I could apply the learnings to my life.

The author presents information in short, easily readable paragraphs and bullet points using simple language. She has curated hundreds of research papers, books, and articles to offer the reader the most important takeaways. However, too many sentences begin with “Research shows that…” so it can be tedious to read.

[Edit: I've been informed that the excessive references to "research shows that..." have been removed. Hence, I'm bumping up my rating by one star.]

All her sources are presented chapter-wise at the end, hyperlinked for easy reference. I find this style of referencing good because it doesn’t interfere with one’s reading of the material. The reader can just flip to the back if he/she wants further information.

I didn’t agree to some of the advice, especially the section that discourages co-sleeping. There are cultural differences that the book does not take into consideration. It’s a short book, meant for light reading, so I didn’t expect to see any topic dealt with in detail. But some of the advice is too simplistic–anybody with common sense would know it.

What I liked most about the book were the thought-provoking quotes selected for each chapter.

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

— Alvin Toffler

A handy book that you can keep on your desk to be read and re-read for inspiration.

I can always use a boost in my life, be it my happiness, relationships, health, financial security, work, etc.. Ms. Ratnayake's concise handbook gives me that and much more. Though some advice is old school, and other advice is fresh, it's all empowering and motivating to give it a try again and build your life portfolio.

Out of the 750 great tips and advice listed in the book, I narrowed down the five most interesting to me:

* Strike a powerful pose (think Wonder Woman or Superman) when you need a boost of confidence before a big task.
* Golfers tend to have a 40% lower death rate than others of the same age, sex, and socioeconomic status.
* A study found that frequent dancing reduced the risk of developing dementia by a staggering 76%, more so than any other physical or cognitive activity. Hip hop dancers see the biggest happiness boost compared with other exercisers.
* Using your middle initial creates a positive impression of your intellect and abilities. Be sure to include it on your CV and work reports.
* When you are feeling blue, writing your negative traits with your non-dominant hand and positive traits with your dominant hand boosts confidence.

I was also intrigued by the number of different apps one can choose to make your life better. Some are listed below:

* Mental health apps like Uplift for depression or MindEase for anxiety.
* Reading apps for optimizing your learning
* Apps that play nature sounds for meditation and decompressing.
* Apps like Lazyjar that make you pay out a sum of money if you don't practice your health habits.

Ms. Ratnayake is a life-long learner who pulled these tips from a large number of notable resources which she lists in the back of the book.  I have to admit that I am also a frequent reader of self-help books and am familiar with a number of suggestions in this book, but it doesn't hurt to revisit them and apply them to my life today. After all, they are conveniently combined in one handbook instead of in multiple volumes taking up space on my bookcase. The author conveniently breaks down the chapters into 18 dimensions of life which are broken down even more by sub-categories and then by numbered tips which makes it easier to quickly look through the content to find what you need.

I recommend this book for those people who may need a refresher course on anything from health to money to parenting without sifting through many self-help books on their shelves.

Thank you to Ms. Ratnayake for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

*Note: The author kindly sent me a digital version of her book in exchange for my honest review. A huge thank you to the author for letting me be a part of it.*

Book in One Sentence
The book provides bite-sized information and tips about living a better and more optimised life in the long run.

My thoughts
Ayesha Ratnayake, the author, contacted me to review her book, Cheat Sheets for Life: Over 750 hacks for health, happiness and success. As the title suggests, the crux of the book deals with the various ways to optimise your life and be successful, both mentally and physically.

The book is set to be released on February 1, 2021. If you are into self-development and mental clarity, then this book is a must for you! The author is also giving away some free resources – which you can access here - http://cheatsheets.life/#resources.

After reading the book, I decided to note down four pointers that made the book useful for me. So, without further ado, let’s get to it:

The organisational format
I loved the organised structure of the book. The author divided the topics into 18 separate categories – each of which has about 3 to 6 sub-sections within them. This provided a very neat layout and is definitely helpful while looking for a topic for everyone. It also helps us to tackle one issue at a time, which is an effective way to deal with problems. The structure also helps the readers to determine the categories that would apply to them the most and work on it for the better.

Credibility
Right at the beginning, the author states that all her information is backed by science. This is a very soothing thought for me as I prefer scientifically proven arguments more than others. Knowing that everything written in the book has been scientifically researched crystallises the statements more than the usual. It is to-the-point, with clear, concise and practical solutions. Self-help books are basically about giving advice for improving your life. Therefore, the best pieces of advice are always pragmatic, scientifically viable and address the issue/s directly. The author does a very good job in enacting that. Furthermore, if the reader is interested to go more in-depth with the ideas, they can always do so by researching the points in their own time.

A little bit for everyone
As mentioned earlier, the book is neatly divided into 18 categories. The readers might not associate themselves with some of them but there are others that would be relatable to them. For instance, I am pretty passionate about productivity and points regarding the two-minute rule, creating to-do lists and checklists actually interested me a lot. Despite being so involved with the topic prior to reading the book, I also managed to learn new things. Therefore, I believe there is a portion for every single person out there.

What resonated with me?
I am a massive believer in taking action. If there is an issue, the best thing is to identify the problem, come up with solutions and take action. Cheat Sheets for Life provides the reader with direct, to-the-point, and crisp solutions. There are several bits of advice that you can take note of and enact them in your life. As a firm believer of logic and reason, I believe that this book would be helpful for everyone out there.

Final Take
All in all, I loved Ayesha Ratnayake’s Cheat Sheets for Life. I believe that everyone should have a copy of this book in their houses. There is a topic for everyone in the book and therefore, it is beneficial for the entire family. If you like clear and logical advice to improve and optimise your life for the better, then Ayesha Ratnayake’s Cheat Sheets for Life is the right book for you!

Key Takeaway
Happiness does not always come to us naturally. Most of the times, it is derived from within. It is something we can control. In order to live a happier life, we need to work for it.

I received this ebook from the author in exchange for a review. All opinions shared are 100% my own.

Okay… if you love lists and love learning new things, you will LOVE this book. It’s like an entire book of those super clickable Pinterest pins with 10 Ways to Be Better at this or 32 Ways to Be Better at that. It’s like the author has read and indexed ALL of those into bite-size lists of awesome. And the best part? She links to all the articles she got her information from in the back of the book. So, you can read a list of things to help you improve an area of your life and stop there. Or, if something really interests you, can you dive into the article behind the bullet point and learn more. One minor frustration is that the resource pages aren’t linked to the individual lists in the Kindle book. It would have been really helpful to use the Kindle feature of hyperlinking locations within a book to make popping back and forth from the list in the main text to the resource pages in the appendix.

The book is available as a paperback, which would be easier to read if you were just interested in flipping to a particular section and reading and referencing there. If you want to be able to easily access the bibliography for deep diving, the Kindle version read in your Cloud Reader is really nice since you can easily open the links. Why not buy both? Both are good.

Its not a book to read cover to cover, but it is full of a wealth of information all at your fingertips or mouse click. I personally love lists and a good X Tips Pinterest pin so I enjoyed this book and appreciated the effort the author has put in to create it.

This is the ultimate self-help book, covering all the topics anyone would ever want. Of course, at under 200 pages (plus 50 pages of references!). It doesn’t cover anything too deeply, but it’s all there: wealth, happiness, love, parenting, work, leadership, you name it. There’s even a “Green Living” section
.
The book consists of snippets of advice — generally good advice — like we often see quoted in social media: clearly stated, well laid out, neat and accessible.

I found myself reading more deeply and enjoying more in the areas I felt most connected with, like parenting, learning, and leadership. I don’t always agree, but that’s not the point. The book gave me ideas to consider. Because of the layout, it was easy to skim the parts that didn’t grab me without thinking I missed anything.

As far as how to use the book, I can’t do better than quote the author:

“Read mindfully – Pause and reflect on how you can apply useful points, look up anything unfamiliar, act on anything immediately actionable, make and revisit notes, remember the key jargon, discuss the material with a friend, and consider reading the source material.”

This is fun stuff to read and dream about following the advice. I’m not sure that any of it will change my life, but it was great to think about.

The most important elements of the book lead us to meta-thinking – considering how we think. And if we don’t actually follow the advice, this book motivates us to take a good look at how we think and where we get the information we use to make decisions.

One thing this author doesn’t do that I think would make the book better is to have a few overarching ideas to refer back to, like a theme in a novel. We are left to infer our own basic ideas, which is fine, but it doesn’t give us a framework upon which to hang our arguments.

A great reference book for life. Buy a paperback copy and keep it in the bathroom or on the bedside table.

I recently got contacted by Ayesha Ratnayake who kindly sent me her latest book in exchange for an honest review. The book will get published in the very beginning of February, so if you are into self-development and very practical books, get ready!

A very practical book

You know my problem with super theoretical self-help books: when I read that type of book, it is to feel like I can improve almost “instantly” and to know how, not to simply learn a bunch of theory. I really loved that book as even though it is scientifically accurate, it is also very digest, easy to read and practical. However, if you prefer literary books that really dive deep into emotions and use long paragraphs to convey ideas, this book is definitely not for you. The paragraphs are extra short and really straight to the point, which makes the book quick to read but not “literary-pleasing” in the sense that it does not try to look like fiction at all.

Scientifically proven ideas

Another thing I love in self-help books is whe there is actually scientific evidence between the principles discussed. I would say that about a half of the book is a list of links to articles discussing the points tackled by the author. That means two great things:

The points she discussed are actually reliable.
The reader has an opportunity to go further in the research if he wants to.

All the sources aren’t technically “scientific” but, at least, they do exist, which is not the case in all the self-help books out there.

At least a section to please you

The book is divided into several sections and if you tell me that none of them sparks interest in you, I won’t believe you. There is at least one section among – for instance – food, leadership, green lifestyle, persuasion and so much more that you want to learn about. I really found some elements to be extremely interesting and I must say that I learnt quite a lot reading this book. I can’t say that it is “rare” but I sometimes feel like when you know how to wake up early and why the Pomodoro technique can be effective, there is not much self-help books can bring you. This book proved me wrong as I learnt quite a lot of things. I mean, do you all know what a Napuccino is? I did not either!

You guessed it, I really loved that book. The only negative point I would give it is its lack of literary substance. However, it is a self-help book and even a scientific book in some of its aspects so I feel like it would be unjust to blame if for it. If it is the type of book you like, go for it as it is full of very useful tips and pieces of information to research about!

"Cheat Sheets For life" as the name suggests gives us bite-sized, actionable tips and ideas that can be applied to any or every tricky situation of our lives. This book has been divided into 18 sections of one topic each like everyday happiness, health, food, motivation, relationships, parenting etc.

These ideas or tips are not provided just like that, rather the author has done extensive research and provided scientifically proven tips and tricks and also has given references to these. There is something or the other for each person in this book.

This book feels like more than a dozen self-help books curated into one book and if we implement these tips into our lives we can get the most out of these ideas and change our lives for the better. And the way the author has presented these ideas in bullet points highlighting even the simple tricks is impressive.

I liked how the author has started each chapter with quotes and I found the chapters on health, food, sleep, productivity, parenting very useful. This is not something you have not read or known earlier but it gives you a ready-made solution to the problems that we face every day. I liked the idea of the book and it will be helpful for everyone.

Ratnayake's book is divided into 18 chapters on topics and under each topic are sub-topics with scientifically proven hacks that offer helpful guidance.

Are you looking to live your best life?

This book offers something for everyone.

If you are wishing to curate positive social experiences - you might begin by thinking about what it is that you wish to accomplish every day.

Needing to increase your parenting skills? Did you know there are games you can play with your child to modify behavior and simulate good behavior?

Sleep eludes many of us. If you know you are not getting the sleep you need you may wish to read the section that speaks to how to obtain healthy sleep practices.

Or, if you're wanting to make a change, you might try replacing negative rewards with positive, satisfying ones, such as reading a good book.

I received a copy of this book through the generosity of the author

I'm sure there's a lot of good info here for anybody who's never thought about how to improve their life. There's a ton of repetition and small bit sized snippets of advice that range from obvious to questionable.

I couldn't get even a quarter of the way through without feeling like I was wasting my time skimming over the same stats over and over.

I think there is some good food for thought. Some of the hacks miss the message from my perspective only because they are written from what works for her. If you look beyond the words and what she is trying to accomplish, you can take those categories and apply to your situation.

I don't think its a book you need to read cover to cover, in order, front to back etc. I jumped from section to section and I think I covered everything. Super simple read with a handful of ideas that I can implement.

A TLDR for all self-help books

I didn’t find her reasoning for writing the book very compelling. I wished she had shared more about how she took these learnings and applied them to her own life. Overall, lots of repeats from atomic habits & subtle art so I didn’t find it very novel. Felt like a quick refresher of ways to live life. Appreciated it only because I like self help books.

More reminders than hacks

Quite honestly, telling me how to be a better leader or to donate to charity or be more green isn't a "Life Hack." There's nothing wrong with most of the advice in the book, but I definitely didn't see many things that were true "hacks".

Very good tips!

I enjoyed this book very much. It is very easy to read. Only reason I did not award it 5 stars is because it is a very general book. Seen a lot of these hacks before, but I have to admit this book presents them in a very comprehensive and easy to read manner.
