Two years after Sharr’s downfall, Ahna sets out on a quest to find the ghosts of her past. After decades believing in the magi’s death at the hands of her ruthless brother, she has found tangible evidence of their survival. But this realization strikes her like a knife to the heart. Not only may the magi be alive, but so may her husband, the man she was forced to mourn fifty years ago. Ahna rushes to a different world with Jules, the veteran spy of the Resistance, and Farooq, a young farmer, a mage who never expected to be one. Together, they will venture down an unexplored realm of danger and uncanny creatures, because what creeps in this faraway world is nothing like they have ever seen.
Tempest of Bravoure: Castaway is the second book of the Tempest of Bravoure series.
Valena D'Angelis was the pen name of author V. M. Couture when she self-published a debut series set in the world she'd kept in her head for years. Though she now writes under a different name, these stories remain as they were always meant to be: an echo of a time when she was learning everything about writing, about publishing, and about herself. Expect epic battles, classic fantasy magic, and characters who go through hell and come out changed. These books were written with passion, and left here with no regrets.
The mages were selfish cowards saving themselves and leaving the rest of the citizens, who were magicless and even some who were magical, behind to suffer at the hands of the enemy. Ahna had suffered at the hands of her brother, and to top it off, her husband was missing. A bittersweet tale filled with intrigue, hatred, and prejudice, a surprising package indeed. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The writing is really great. Enjoyed the storyline - a pageturner- not boring and kept me wanting to know what next. I learnt a lot about magic :) and found the characters relatable as they silently address important societal matters without being overly explicit. The ending was definitely unexpected and I'm looking forward to my next downtown so I can enjoy the last book in the series.
All in all, highly recommend reading this especially if you just want to relax and get lost in a world full of fantasy.
Valena D’Angelis lets us get lost in another world with the exciting follow up Tempest of Bravoure: Castaway! Ahna is back, this time searching for answers to the tangled questions of her past. With the help of a veteran spy (my favorite) and an amateur mage, she heads into a new world, one filled with new and creeping dangers. I loved getting to explore a lush fantasy world with Ahna in the past, so to get to dive into a new realm is a treat. There’s a great deal of mystery in this one, and the characters pack plenty of surprises, both series regulars and newcomers alike. If you love your fantasy packed with witty characters who also have depth, imaginative worlds, interesting creatures, and surprise twists, come search for the Magi in Castaway!
Thanks, NetGalley and Publisher for the opportunity to read and review! The trilogy is a real gem. I truly enjoyed reading! As to my pleasure, the main character is a female dark elf named Ahna and her journey - so very human. We follow her adventure as it starts on the edge of despair and sorrow in a world shattered by war and suffering caused by a member of her own race. Ahna's story includes little, but true friendship, epic battles, the awesome fantasy creatures that we all love in every shape possible as well as the inner struggle to find a reason to live a life that has taken everything from you and a path to walk in a world that hates you. Definitely recommend this series to every fantasy fan!
A bit different from the previous book, as there are no battlefields we end up on. But there is plenty of action to enjoy! The book starts off a bit after the revolution inside Bravoure, but soon brings you to the most unexpected places. The somewhat unusual party will face some amazing creatures in intense fights whilst trying to complete their quest.
Some characters are also facing their own personal battles, and their scars from the war haven’t exactly healed yet. To me this book has it all, and follows up really nicely on the building done in the first book! A must read!
Compelling Sequel to Kingdom Ascent that leaves you wanting more
Valena again shows us she is a great story teller, but this time she also demonstrates versatility by taking some of the threads from Kingdom Ascent to weave them into a quite different tale and create a new world, reminiscent in some ways to C S Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet. Whilst the story slows a little in the middle, the pace rapidly picks up for a thrilling finale; and then ends with a cliff hanger to set up City of the Dead.
Tempest of Bravoure: Castaway takes place a short time after the end of the first novel. I was excited to read the continuation of the heroine's story. Readers will be pleased to see other characters join her on her epic journey to find the lost mages. The story introduced new characters and twists and turns in the storyline. The author did a fantastic job in creating a new world full of excitement, emotion, and drama that will have readers eager for the next book in the series.
