The Ragrim Conflict #1

Within Alien Arms

Rate this book
The war bride program is the only thing keeping Earth safe from the ravages of other aliens, right?

Every year thousands of human women ship off as brides to the planet Lukrim in exchange for Earth’s protection from Ralothian raiders. It’s a fair trade; Lukrim needs women and Earth needs guardians. It’s all volunteer, of course, except when a Lukrimian or two choose you as a wife and make you go.

My family’s farm is the only thing I have left and I’m determined to keep it, which means staying away from the attention of Earth’s alien overlords. When the four-armed Tremallin scout Dagnar crash lands on the distant edge of my property, I need to stay under the radar and not attract attention. The sooner he gets off of Earth, the safer I’ll be.

A strong 3+ stars for an interesting take on the Mars-needs-women trope. The extra dollop of interstellar intrigue drives the story. A strong woman finds an alien in her backyard and discovers that everything she knew about the universe was wrong - everyone on Earth had been lied to. These two fall for each other quickly, but naturally. There were several good action scenes, and the sexual tension was strong. Everything came together at the end a bit too easily, and there could have been some more depth added to their relationship, and one or two more smexy scenes.

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos that I found and well constructed sentences. The world building was vibrant, with the Lukrimian diabolical political machinations coming to life for this reader. The characterization of the hero and heroine were great, with them being sympathetic individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship was sweet and organic, with the heat level rating at three chili peppers. The plot and pacing were excellent, quick and exciting. There was low angst and high stakes throughout, which tends to be one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. This novel used the Crash Landed Alien trope. The world building, plot, and pacing were all four stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were also four stars. I therefore gave this novel a combined rating of four stars. This novel had a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger ending, so that was a big plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy sci-fi romances with action elements and political undercurrents. I look forward to reading the next book in this series when it releases. I am not going to buy myself a keeper copy of this book right now, but if the series continues with the high quality storytelling, I may end up buying the whole series.

The MMC is an independent observer sent by the interplanetary senate to report on the war between two alien species who are fighting over earth, which they’re both claiming is a “garden world” with no sentient species. In fact, both species are fighting over their right to take female mates from earth, one only a little bit more consent-oriented than the other. He starts to get suspicious and tries to call for backup, but instead is shot down and makes an emergency landing on earth to make repairs, hide and get the message out.

There, he meets the FMC, who lives alone on the farm she grew up on, the rest of her family already gone. She finds out that the twenty-year mail order bride program that one of the alien species has implemented on their planet is not kosher, and he finds out that those same aliens have been claiming that the space senate is aware of their existence and is refusing to help earth.

She helps him jury-rig his ship back into service, teaches him how to make applesauce, and there’s lots of simple, cute details about her self-sufficient way of life. Cozy. They fall in love, get the word out, fly off to space together, HEA.

Premise and setting? Excellent. Unique aliens? Somewhat excellent. Lucinda has her family's farm and she's not letting it go. Nor is she joining the Alien Bride experience to be shipped off to another planet where she'd be the wife to TWO alien husbands. Instead, she works hard, works the land, and provides for herself. Oh, her ex is a total jerk and it's rather obvious right away that he will be the cause for conflict. As for Dagnar, he's an interesting sort. I appreciate that he's not exactly a warring alien that has crash landed on Lucinda's family's farm and instead a scout for the peaceful alien Senate. He uncovers a secret that the warring aliens have been keeping from the rest of alienkind. He's strong willed but also intrigued by life on Earth. And Lucinda in particular. Their slow and steady slide from cautious to infatuated is somewhat sweet. Domestic. A great read with a new (to me) concept for aliens.

This was a great story. First book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it. There was action, drama, fighting and steam. I love how Lucinda is keeping from drawing attention of the Earth's alien overlords since she doesn't want to be part of the Lukrim warriors and their bride program. The Lukrim bride program is sending human women as Tremallin brides as protection from the Ralothian raiders. She really has to stay out of the way when a Tremallin scout Dagnar crashes on the edge of her property. Does Dagnar find Lucinda? Does he take her as his bride? This was a sweet read with a good storyline. I received an ARC copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book was absolutely great. Just could not put it down! Full of action, drama, heartache and edge of your seat firefights...

That firefight that Dagnar was in was hair raising, felt like I was there. (well done Nessa Claugh) I wanted to smack Lucinda, who goes outside, knowing there is trouble, without protection? Which alien was shot down? Good guys or bad guys?
Read this great book and find out....

This is a story about two people finding what they need in each other. It has action and lots of learning about misjudging others. It is a story with lots of heat and different emotions. It is a stand alone HEA with no cheating and lots of sexy moments. They end up saving each other in the end. I am looking forward to searching for more books from this author.

This is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone
This is the first I have read by this author, but I will look out for more. This was a well written story with interesting characters and enough twists to keep you hooked

I am surprised at the low vol of reviews, the author should be more popular and is worth following to catch her next books

This is my first book from this author and it was pretty good. Lucinda is trying to live off the farm her parents left for her and also try to stay out of the alien overlords' sight but fate doesn't always play out the way you want. Life is okay for Lucinda until a Tremallin scout, Dagnar, shows and shakes up her life. This was an entertaining read with a sweet romance and a decent plot.

I liked that this was a different story of how humans came to find themselves in a breeding program. It fits our current society more so it has a real ness that isn’t always in science fiction. The main characters are great and the whiney Chaz is the perfect villain in the story

The characters and world building were very well done, with a fast paced plot. Altogether, it's an exciting read and I'm looking forward to more stories for this series.

Dagnar was doing his job as a scout and discovers and underhanded operation going on. He crashes and meets Lucinda who is struggling with being alone. This was a great book with some funny moments and lots of steamy ones. It’s about doing the right thing no matter the cost.

A great alien romance.

Always question what your leaders say. A wonderful book that depicts aliens finding earth and hiding it from others. I enjoyed Lucindas practical attitude and her ability to survive on her own.

Meh. Didn't really manage to capture my attention, but I guess that's mainly due to how painfully slow things moved.

Aliens fighting for human rights is a worthy premise and one that I enjoyed. I will admit to liking the slow burn between Dagnar and Lucinda along with the satisfaction after the burn. Gotta love an energizer bunny alien (joke…kinda).

Claugh gives us a slow-burn alien romance with some action, heat, and food. I did not mind returning to this series and can’t wait to read the next book.

Thank you to the Author for putting this book in #KindleUnlimited otherwise I could not have afford to read it. Thanks again!
