Assassinate is a short story written by priest, part of Machine Fantasy – A Dream of Steampunk (机械幻想 – 蒸汽朋克之梦), a steampunk anthology published in 2015.

Set in a fictional London, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, Edward Lander’s name was both renowned and hated by the empire, which needed his groundbreaking intelligence, and by the anti-science organizations who detested such unnatural progress. While the empire expended its effort in protecting him and the anti-science organizations set assassins after him, Edward Lander only wished for his unspeakable feelings to reach the object of his affection.

this review will be for both Assassinate[刺杀] and Dog [狗] by priest since the latter isnt on goodreads but i want to have my rating noted somewhere. the two arent related whatsoever i just happened to read them one after the other

Assassinate[刺杀]: 3.5 stars

it wasn’t bad and i would say it is worth reading considering how short it is but at the same time the main reason for the low rating is the fact that is short, i think it would benefit greatly from being at least a little bit longer. overall i enjoyed it i think there is a lot being said in the short span of it, but then again i would’ve liked more

Dog [狗]: 3 stars

now in this case i think this was the appropriate length. the story follows an eccentric professor and a police officer as they investigate the disappearance of a young boy. the story was really short but satisfying with a interesting conclusion, still there is something about it that doesn’t let me give it a higher rating. maybe i’ll return to it someday and edit it but for now ill leave it like that

I kinda hate short stories, they frustrate me with the lack of development of various story elements due to the short page count. I always struggle with the Short Stories square on r/Fantasy bingo and this was no exception. Short steampunk alternate history story about a mute evil scientist in London and the childhood friend he pines over.

I just feel like the story had a lot of unrealized potential and would have benefitted from fully exploring the MC’s misanthropy, how violent industrialization and technology is valued at the expense of the poor and less educated, and the impact of widespread anti-science beliefs. The ending was also too abstract to really know what happened. I did feel like I got a glimpse of what Priest is capable of and I look forward to reading her full-length novels

I have so many feelings after reading this story. I think I need days to digest it.

There is so much being said in this story about the real world, and so much that we learn about the main characters, even though we only have 7 chapters to learn it all in. As expected when it comes to Priest, it's done beautifully. The world building is immense, and the feelings of longing sink into your soul. The ending is happy but a bit ambiguous which is why my unsettled feelings need time to come back down from the roller coaster they were just put on.

As always, I have a favorite line: "Where lies the pride of the animal walking upright?" My goodness what an insult!

My first priest novel! I find her worlds really interesting, I just wish the chapters were longer to flesh out the plot and characters more.

It was but a sketch of a plot and yet Priest manages to throw in thought provoking questions about the nature and value of a human's existence as well as about the technology-vs-humanity discourse.

4 estrellas

A mini novella that questions what price must society pay for technology/intelligence especially if it brings destruction to many. Edward and Arno are on complete opposite sides of the advancement of intelligence since Edward is the mad scientist behind the tech...in a way, I liked that this is so short because it condenses all the sentiments felt between the characters and what is more largely going on in their world...
