Crybaby

Rate this book
Jason knows that sleeping with your best friend isn’t a good idea. Especially if said best friend has never slept with another guy before...and you kind of, maybe, get turned on when people cry.

Not that he’s going to make tall, beefy, Russian Sasha cry. Not that Sasha is going to want Jason to make him cry. Jason is just going to push all his lovey-dovey feelings and dark desires down and forget about them.

Repression works, right? No way this is going to end in disaster.…

dacryphilia - sexual arousal by your partner's tears.

i enjoyed this.

judge all you want.

this academic year has been getting more and more hectic that sometimes i can't bring myself to read a book that's more than 100 pages long, so these short, 70-page, weird kink books come through here and there. and honestly, they do a better job of keeping me entertained more than any 200+ page novella. and also, let's take a moment to realize a very interesting and cool fact that this is all...fiction. ah yes, my favorite word.

and besides, dacryphilia is a real thing. there have even been psychological studies on it. so in reality, shoutout to fiction for teaching us something new everyday.

Sasha opened his eyes slightly, shiny with tears, and heat flared through Jason at having Sasha like this, broken apart and begging, trusting Jason to put him back together again when all was said and done.

crybaby, as the definition implies, is about jason, who realizes he gets turned on and aroused by the sight of tears, also known as dacryphilia. the tears aren't necessarily of pain, but of feeling overwhelmed. he doesn't think too much about it when he first realizes it, until sasha. sasha has just left russia to due the discrimination he faces as a gay man, but he's not as open about it as he wants to be. when he asks jason for help, jason and him enter a sort of friends with benefit situation, but jason's feelings won't stop growing, and before he knows it, he's afraid sasha is only using him to figure himself out until he finds the one.

it's a best friends to lovers story, and yeah, it features a kink that is...strange...but there's more to that.

And when he started crying out of frustration? Eyes glaring and bright, desperate…it was the most beautiful thing Jason had ever seen. He’d never wanted anybody more. He couldn’t imagine feeling like this for anybody else.

marina vivancos won me with the banter over everything else. the friendship between jason and sasha felt entirely real. despite the book being barely over 70 pages, jason and sasha form a friendship that expands through 3 years, and it shows. while we don't see every interaction, every dialogue we see between them is full of laughter. i found myself smiling, grinning, and laughing at their dialogue more than i do at longer romcoms. you can also tell how comfortable they are around each other. friends to lovers, especially best friends to lovers, is my favorite this to that trope, and being told about jason and sasha's friendship felt like enough. they actually know so much about each other and are so comfortable around the other. maybe the romantic feelings between the two could have developed more, but other than that, their friends to lovers appeal felt real.

“He like a hundred years old. He worry.”
“He went to the hospital, Sasha. He didn’t even have symptoms.”
“So? Mind your own business.”
“Um, excuse me, it very much was my business because all his drama always happens in the middle of a big project.”
Sasha ignored him.
Jason shook his head sadly. “I can’t believe you’re on his side.”
“There is no side. You make side. Shut up and help me choose.”
“Maybe we should get him a lead-detection kit.”
“I said shut up.”
“You said to help!”
“Yes. You not helping, you shut up.”
“This is harassment.”
“You are harassment.”

i think vivancos did a really good job at also portraying both characters really realistically. besides their interactions feeling like actual human communication (you know, like when people stutter, or start talking and then don't know what to say, or get stuck in one sentence and just end it), both characters had their vulnerabilities, especially sasha. after leaving his home in russia, he becomes a little isolated and is scared of showing himself fully, but jason helps him get out of his shell a little by showing him how much easier it can be. he's also strongly connected to his culture, but he's still afraid of showing himself the way he wants to be seen to his family and loved ones back home. i think one of the sweetest moments was when jason made him russian food for new year’s eve. he called his sister, who translated to his mother, for instructions on how to make things and it was just...wholesome.

It almost felt like the gay teenagedom that they both never had—that so many queer people never have. The insatiable nature of their desire, the playfulness of it quickly dipping into intensity.

the romance between the two is actually pretty fucking romantic and cute. jason is much more dominating, and it shows in every action he takes, especially when sasha knows about his kink and like for his tears, but he's also caring, gentle, and sweet. he has more experience than sasha and knows it, but he also doesn't use it against sasha. while we're not told, we can tell jason would let sasha be the top if he wanted to. however, sasha becomes pretty hypnotized by jason, and it's seen in how quickly he obeys him, how he follows his orders. jason becomes possessive too, but it's not something he acts on. his feelings for sasha grows, but he doesn't show them or talk about them until the end. i think the relationship could have used a little more development, as it's not exactly stated when jason came to "fall in love" with sasha, but other than that, i enjoyed this.

“You wanna come?” he crooned.
Sasha nodded wordlessly.
“Okay, baby. You’ve been so good. Look at you, God. Fucking perfect. Crying just for me.”

in the end, this was another weird and enjoyable addition to moments where i'm searching for something to literally help me escape reality and ignore the entire world.

OMG! OMG! OMGGGGGGGGG!! DID YOU SAY A NOVELLA THAT DOESN'T ACTUALLY SUCK!?

When someone sees someone crying:

When Jason sees someone crying:

👏This is how you write a novella.👏
👏This is how you establish 2 characters, with distinct personalities in less than 3 chapters.👏
👏This is how you choose a simple concept, and FUCKING NAIL IT IN LIKE 100 PAGES.👏

I didn't think I would ever be like..
ME 🤝 CRYING KINK/CRYING DURING SEX...

Although simple concept/story:
-The story has a point.
-The mc's have jobs that they actually attend sometimes making them feel realistic.
-There is enough back story, that your brain won't need to ask questions.
-The friendship is completely believable before they make it sexual.
-The MC's kink is explained and later developed.
-THE BANTER THESE TWO HAVE IS SO VERY CLOSE TO WHAT HUMANS MAY ACTUALLY SAY IN REAL LIFE. And it was cuuuuuuuute as fuck.
-The banter and the russian accent reeeeeeeeeeeeally hit me in my heart boner.

Thank god for MUG💖 recommending this to me!!! bless you girl! and the back up rec by MEGAN💖. Thank you queens showing me the light, just as I had just convinced myself that ALL NOVELLA'S SUCK.
But I was wrong 🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻

SO CUTE!! for a novella, i never expected this book to make me... cry? or even make me feel all kinds of emotions yet, despite the lack of proper development bc of its short length, this somehow made it work for me. i loved the banters between the mcs, Jason and Sasha, and how the friends to lovers aspect was handled between them. <3

"Hello doctor, fancy to see you again... I just read a book about dacryphilia and I got *coughs* fire in my panties *coughs* by it, is that a kink of mine or just the book? Do I need some Freud shit or whut?!!" 🙃🙃🙃

Yep, this book was hot as hell, I never knew I would like this but the moment it was explained, I knew that I had to get ready because I was gonna get all the feels. And I did, now me confused. But the story? Fire, the kink? Fire, the love? Fire. They were so sweet and so naughty.

I'm in love. 💜💙💛🧡❤

Who knew crying could be this hot?

God did I enjoy this. This book was so sweet and so hot, kind of angsty but not really. It was the perfect mix for me. I really loved most things about this.

Brief summary: Jason and Sasha have been best friends for years. Jason is trying to come to terms with the fact that his kink is seeing people cry during sex. Sasha is russian and has never been with a man before, but he wants to be with Jason. And then they fall in love and they have lot of sex involving Sasha crying.

“I’m in love with you. You are best friend, good friend, always think of me, treat me best. And sex best, too. What are you talking about, finding love of life? You are love of life! I’m in love with stupidest man on planet.”

First, I loved Sasha so much. He was so damn sweet and so precious. I loved everything about him. I loved how he didn’t seem to overthink things and went with what he wanted. I loved how eager he was for everything. And I loved how he kept reassuring Jason that liking what he likes is fine (Jason had a lot of self doubts), it was so sweet how he was so into it and kept wanting more. I really would have loved to get his point of view, that would have been lovely to see.

Second, I really loved how nice Jason was to Sasha. I loved how he always went with what Sasha wanted and waited on Sasha before he did something. He was a very good partner and I really liked that about him.

Third, holy shit the sex. It was so so good. I loved the first time they got together, that was so damn hot. Also that first scene where they incorporated the kink to their sex? That was so fucking hot. I adored it. All the sex in this was so good and really hot, I loved it very much.

I do have some small niggles. First, this is probably because French is my first language and I met English speakers who weren’t willing to listen to my music in French or watch my movies in French way too often. But it really annoyed me how Jason kept complaining about Sasha picking a movie in Russian, he’s your best friend and all, just watch the damm movie to make him happy, it’s not that hard. Second, Jason had a lot of issues and self doubts but we never got told where they came from so I never really understood why he kept doubting himself so much. Sasha is russian so his internalized homophobia made sense, but I didn’t understand why Jason was so ashamed, it would have helped to get some back story there. Third, I wish they talked a bit more but it didn’t really bother me and I really enjoyed how the lack of talking was resolved, it was a nice moment.

This was really sweet and really hot and I adored the author’s writting style. I will for sure check out Marina Vivancos other books now.

Oh wow, this was absolutely delightful.
This cracked me up more than just a few times; it was genuinely hilarious.

This novella is about Jason and Sacha who have been best friends for a few years now. They hang out all the time and have lot of banter going on between them.
However, as time goes on, Jason starts to notice that he has fallen in love with Sacha, but he doesn't think Sacha will ever feel the same way.
Then, Sacha suddenly asks Jason if he is willing to be the first guy he ever has sex with, and Jason simply does not have the strength to say no to something like that. Nor does he want to.

Obviously this all seems like the most simple premise imaginable. Best friends to lovers? Been there, done that. And trust me, this is not a new spin to the trope, nor does it have a super interesting plotline. No, that's not it.
Instead, what makes this novella stand out from the rest of these type of stories is the genuine friendship portrayed here. The friendship feels so authentic, and has a lot of bickering and banter. Their dynamic was absolutely hilarious and oh so real.
Every time they communicated with each other it sounded like an actual conversation real-life human beings could have. With this I mean that I could imagine actual people speaking to each other like this: it was so genuine and organic. For some reason this type of good writing for dialogue is quite hard to find in books, but Marina Vivancos absolutely nailed it.

Sacha was honestly also one of the best characters ever. He is a big Russian guy who is not afraid to show emotion or affection, but is also super direct and straight-to-the-point. Neither is he afraid to give as good as he gets when it comes to his very sarcastic and unsociable best friend, Jason.
Sacha honestly had me laughing so many times with his broken English and no-bullshit attitude. I literally couldn't help but love the guy. Seriously, I love this dude so much.

Jason was also a very likable character and he has this interesting sexual kink called ‘dacryphilia’. This basically means that he gets turned on by people crying.
And before you immediately click away from this review in disgust: no it is not as weird as it sounds, and the way the story and characters incorporated this kink was really great.
It’s not a vicious or sadistic kink either; Jason doesn’t want to hurt people, he just likes to see people vulnerable and open, and how much more vulnerable can you get than by crying?

Now, to give a good idea of what this novella is like, I figured I would simply put a random scene out of the book down here. It's not the funniest or best scene (that wouldn't be representative), but it does give a really good impression of what this novella is like and how the friendship between these two is, so if you think this looks fun, I'm sure you'll enjoy the entire thing. Anyway, here we go:

By the time he was crawling over Sacha, the man was flushed from laughing, and Jason couldn't help but kiss him again, tasting the smile he's loved for years.
"I knew this was good idea," Sacha said against his lips. "I am genius."
"For once, I couldn't agree with you more. Maybe you're a sexual savant."
"Savant?"
"It's like someone that is very gifted at something."
"Yes, that me."
"I guess I'm a great teacher."
"No, savant is natural gift, not learn."
"You literally didn't know what savant meant a second ago."
"I just know."
"Okay, well, Mr. I-Just-Know, can I eat you out or nah?"
Sacha stared at him for a moment. "Like... ass?"
Jason pressed his lips together to avoid laughing. "Yea. No pressure, I know we've never done that before."
"I shower before I come here."
"Yeah, I know, dude, your hair's still wet."
Sacha touched his hair. "Is not wet, is a little bit damp!"
"Jeez, I didn't know the level of moisture in your hair was such a personal and touchy subject. My deep and sincere apology."
Sacha shoved at his face which, of course, necessitated retaliation. What ensued was surprisingly non-sexy naked wrestling that didn't end up with crushed balls by holy and divine miracle alone.
"Okay, fuck, stop," Jason panted, flopping over Sacha's belly like a tired cat. "We've deviated significantly from the mission."
"Not my fault."
"It absolutely was your... you know what? I can let this go."
"Wow. Did not know that was even possible."
"Finding my Zen place. It's fine."
"He has Zen place. It was built yesterday, very new, never seen before."
"Practicing mindfulness in times of stress."
"He has mind. It was built yesterday, very new, never—"
Another few minutes of naked wrestling ensued.
They collapsed next to each other, already sweaty and flushed. Jason threw an arm over his eyes. "Okay, I think we're done for today."
"With fighting or orgasm?"
"With fighting, obviously. So, I can eat you out?"

But, of course it's not only fun and games between these two, and they definitely do care about each other a whole lot. Even if Sacha finally tells Jason he loves him in the most 'them' way possible:

"Don't act like this was more than sex from your end. From the start, you’ve made it clear this was casual for you."
"You crazy! How? How—what did I do to say, oh, this casual?"
"You.... I mean, you, at the start, you said this was only because you wanted to, you know. Have sex with someone you trusted before going out and finding the love of your life or whatever."
"I never say this."
"Yes, you did."
"No."
"Well, you implied it."
Sacha threw his hands in the air, looking up as if pleading with God. "You are stupidest man. How you function, unbelievable." He looked at Jason. "I'm in love with you. You are best friend, good friend, always think of me, treat me best. And sex best, too. What are you talking about, finding love of life? You are love of life! I'm in love with stupidest man on planet."

All in all, this whole novella was just immensely enjoyable. The humour, the friendship, the writing-style, the chemistry, the characters, the feels, the banter: it was all absolutely amazing!

Oftentimes novellas can feel a little lacking to me. I am so pleased to say that was not the case here! This was short and oh so sweet. I fell head over heels instantly for the love interest of the main character - Sasha. What can I say? I just really love gentle giants. Extra points if said gentle giant is hairy… This was a friends to lovers tale that never felt rushed to me, which is something I often find myself grumbling about when it comes to novellas. Sasha and the MC - Jason have been besties for three years. I could feel the easy comfort and camaraderie that they had with each other. A lot of the time I find myself thinking whilst reading romance books okay so yeah you’re attracted to each other, but beyond that - what else is there? What connects you guys beyond the attraction? That’s what will make the relationship last / that’s what makes it seem believable (to me) - a solid connection. Jason and Sasha have that in spades. I loved the teasing between them too. None of that oh damn this is being labeled as ‘teasing / joking’ but it’s just plain nastiness either. It was, and I am going to use this word for the billionth time, - gentle teasing. The kind that feels like a light breeze, not a storm that leaves you drenched. I love that shit. Since I am talking about the elements a hell of a lot, I shall now state that the sex was fire! This was the first book I read regarding this particular kink - getting off on people crying, and I thought it was dealt with very well. I mean it wasn’t a big part of the book, like say the book is the bread - the crying kink was the butter on said bread. It made the bread more delicious but it didn’t overpower it. It wasn’t like the bread was soaked in butter either - I could even say that I wish there was more butter but I digress. Soooo now I’m hungry.

Such a lovely novella!
Full of awesome dialogues, funny banter, and heart. So much heart.
I was a bit apprehensive yet intrigued by the book's blurb. I should not have doubtet Marina Vivancos' skills, though.

I enjoyed every minute of this wonderful, sweet story.
Watching Jason and Sasha fall in love was beautiful.
There were so many paragraphes I wanted to highlight, Sasha and Jason were simply awesome together. Their silly banter, their conversations, it all felt so genuine and natural. And the sex scenes were perfect, too. It's Marina Vivancos after all.

I'm going to reread this gem over and over again, every time I'm in need of hug in book-form (I even went back to reread a few scenes after having finished the book because I didn't want to part with Jason and Sasha).

Ps the attracted-by-crying part wasn't the main focus of the story, and was explained in a believable and satisfying way (as Jason's attraction wasn't tied to his partner's tears triggered by pain but by them being overwhelmed).

This was so cute!! I’ve seen this on my goodreads feed forever but there was something off putting about not only the title but the “making my friend cry” blurb so I’ve always just overlooked it. Well, I needed something different after my last shitty read and I’m so glad I gave this a shot because it was adorable!! I loved Sasha and Jason so so much. Sasha was right though that Jason was the biggest idiot in the world for not seeing what was right in front of his face 😂😂😂

I highly recommend this novella but I wish there was more of them as a couple. I can’t wait to read more by this author 💗

Cute, funny and kinky.
It took a while because Jason didn't convince me at first. But he grew on me, and once I got into his emotional world, it was a wonderful story.
It's not my cup of tea in terms of kink. Lesson learned. I tried to ignore the tears and focus on the rest.
The relationship that develops is very sweet, even if they are “just” friends with benefits. I would have liked a little less sex. But it's okay, since they both have less experience and have to try everything out somehow.
I liked the friendship part best, and the banter was very amusing.

Denial and repression. Keystones of any stable mind. Jason was wise beyond his years, he really was. 🖤

“You wanna do something?” Jason asked quietly.
“Yes. Want to cry. Make me cry.”
Heat hit him like a punch to the chest. “Fuck. You really are going to kill me.”
“Good death.”
😳

“I shower before I come here.”
“Yeah, I know, dude, your hair’s still wet.”
Sasha touched his hair. “Is not wet, is a little bit damp!”
“Jeez, I didn’t know the level of moisture in your hair was such a personal and touchy subject. My deep and sincere apology.”

Sweet friends to lovers diversion.

It kind of reminded me of the good ole Steter fanfics I used to read when all those authors were on the let's make Stiles cry because he's so overwhelmed by Peter. I still don't really get that kink but far be from me to kink shame.

You can expect little angst, things to move swiftly from friends to lovers to forever which was helped along by a big Russian who seemed to be a little bit telepathic? Sasha was really, unbelievably intuitive and surprisingly candid with Jason which was on the one hand refreshing not to be weighed down by a bunch of prolonged second-guessing yet on the other, stretched my belief range.

The overwhelming parts were pretty stellar which also helped to wipe the slate clean of all that suspension of disbelief jibber-jabber too.

If you're in the mood for a quick, kinda kinky and sweet read give Crybaby a spin.

Reading the blurb I thought, you can only make someone cry by hurting them, by breaking their heart, how can you make…. Ahhhhhhhhhhh yeah got it and loved it 🥵🥵🥵🥵

But now….

I…. DEMAND MORE! It’s not fair to give us Sasha & Jason and take it away after so few pages 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I…. NEED MORE! It’s sorcery or excruciating talent to pull this level of emotions, tots adorbes and hotness overload.
I…. CRY FOR MORE!

“Sasha turned at once to face Jason, squeezing him tightly, making small, animal noises against his neck.
Jason stroked Sasha’s hair, the other arm holding him just as tightly.
“You did so good, baby. So good.”
Jason closed his eyes and, for once, just let his love for Sasha fill him to the brim.”

I know I had some complaints, but honestly I forgot what it was 🥹

Ps: Sasha is one of my favorite names ever 🖤

Short, entertaining and sizzling hot 🔥

I’ve been seeing this all over my goodreads feed, and now that I’ve read it, I know why: it might be short (88 pages), but the two main characters (Jason and Sasha, his Russian friend) are well developed and very likable. We might only get Jason’s (3rd person) pov, but seeing Sasha through his eyes makes us get to know him, too.

And while I’ve never heard of dacryphilia, before (getting turned on by someone crying or sobbing), it’s unexpectedly… hot, at least the way it’s described.

Despite the shortness of the book, and several sex scenes, it’s romantic. In fact, Sasha’s declaration of love actually left me starry eyed 🤩

“You are stupidest man. How you function, unbelievable.”
He looked at Jason.
“I’m in love with you. You are best friend, good friend, always think of me, treat me best. And sex best, too. What are you talking about, finding love of life? You are love of life! I’m in love with stupidest man on planet.”

A friends-to-lovers story refreshingly devoid of drama, it packed a lot of feelings and still managed to feel like a light read. The humor certainly helped, but I think the characters and their dynamic made all the difference.

5 stars. 5 huge shiny stars.

I put off reading this for ages. Somehow the idea of a crying kink, or whatever I thought that was, disinterested me. Funny how whatever vague impression you have of something can stop you from enjoying something great.

Good thing I learned how to get out of my own way, because this novella was so, so good.

The back and forth between these guys, man, Vivancos writes quippy dialogue well. Friends to best friends with benefits to pretending it doesn't mean what it really means. Adorable.

And yes, there's some tears, but it's not a humiliation kink (nothing wrong with that), it's a I can't take it anymore, please let me come, I'm so frustrated, crying. Who doesn't love that?! No one, that's who.

Some of my favorites:

Sometimes the image of teary eyes and wet cheeks and gasping breaths infiltrated his head when he was jerking off, but that didn’t mean anything. Everybody knew jerking off was like going to Vegas— you didn’t talk about it, and it didn’t count.

“Oh, should, should. You love should,” Sasha scoffed. “So what? Sex weird. You love making big deal out of little deal. This is little deal. Sex is good when is a lot, and when is a lot, people cry, not bad. I like cry.”

“You are stupidest man. How you function, unbelievable.” He looked at Jason. “I’m in love with you. You are best friend, good friend, always think of me, treat me best. And sex best, too. What are you talking about, finding love of life? You are love of life! I’m in love with stupidest man on planet.”

Sasha smiled triumphantly. “I best boyfriend. Cry for you every night. You will be very happy.”

Well that was hot.

- Best friends to lovers
- Friends with benefits
- Russian MC who's in the closet
- Virgin MC... that same russian
- Experimenting
- Steamy AF

The crying aspect is really a small part of the book and not all intrusive or OTT. I liked that part alot... Sasha being desperate during sex that he shed a few tears. It's hot!

Friends-to-lovers served up with some humor and a blessed absence of angst. The formula is familiar, as is the POV-MC's inability to recognize that his feelings are reciprocated. It could have been tedious, but the characterization was strong enough to keep me entertained. The sex scenes were pretty good too. My first time reading this author, but it won't be my last.

This book was ridiculously good, I honestly can’t believe how wholesome it was.

I’ll admit I was very hesitant about reading it because the title is super random and when I read the blurb I was confused like how is crying also arousing? So every time it came up on my feed I was like thank you, next.

And yet! My absolute bestie read it and convinced me to give it a go and I’m very happy I did so. Sometimes with novellas, it’s hard to get a good understanding of the chemistry between the MCs and their backstory, but in this case, I felt immersed from the beginning, their banter and their conversations were so fun and the way we could see their friendship and Jason’s consequent pining as very believable.

I would absolutely read a whole book about these two idiots in love.

It definitely was as good as everyone said because enjoyed it so much🤭💓

I actually picked it up for the kink (you’ll know it when you see it), the short length, and because the cover is genuinely stunning! But plot twist: it was the soft, tender little love story that fully got me!!
Their friendship felt so natural without needing endless flashbacks, and the banter was cute without being cringe. It just worked!!

The sex scenes were so good, spicy and emotional, which is my weakness. There’s praise, there’s crying (in the best way) and it somehow balances filthy with wholesome.

Short, sweet, horny, and surprisingly full of heart. Would absolutely read again just for the vibes!!

Lovely little ‘intermission’ novella. This was perfect to read amongst an angsty series as it’s sweet and steamy but also has a genuine feel to it. Surprisingly satisfying in the relationship development this has good pacing and felt complete at the end, even for the short page count. The kink was far less cringey than I was expecting.

Yup, everyone was right. This was SO GOOD!! The perfect mix between laugh out loud funny and genuine, big, swoony, pining feelings. And not to mention a hell of a lot of kinky steam 🥵
I’ve never encountered a crying kink in a book before (or in general tbh) and I didn’t think it would work for me. BUT IT DID, it totally did?!
These two were perfect 🥹

PS: What is it about a Russian accent in a book that get’s me all hot and bothered? Is it because of my undying love for my baby Ilya from Heated Rivalry? Someone please explain.

Jason + Sasha (Alex)
Friends to lovers | Pining | Crying kink

Cute friend to lovers. They were really sweet with each other. I loved that they could be wrestling and roasting each other one minute then be all sweet and cute the next.

Somewhat slow start
Written in third person 👎👎
