What They Don't Teach You In Art School is a guide to help you create new opportunities using your art skills to pay the bills, even if you have no prospects right now.
Will Terry has compiled a beautiful and concise book on how to turn one's passion for art into a lifelong self-sustaining career. The title resonates true for many, including myself. As so much emphasis in art school is placed on how to make art, not enough emphasis is placed on how to turn one's craft into collateral for income. This will continue to be a book I return to over and over for reminders and tips on how to grow my career as an artist.
This book is encouraging and hopeful for a generation or two beyond Terry's years as an illustrator in a diverse and challenging field. There are lots of strategies and practical advice for artists and illustrators hoping to make focused portfolios. I wish there were more places I could submit my work, rather than just sending to publishers, as this is time consuming and often has no result. But the advice on developing your own personal work, and portfolio is really helpful, and quite different from what I learned in art school as a painting major. I am working on building a portfolio that includes more of a variation in skill and idea.
The most practical and inspiring book I've ever read for artists. If you read the section on contracts and still want to be an illustrator then it is truly your calling. I seriously love this book and can't recommend it enough. Not only is the advice that magical combination of encouraging and practical but the art is truly inspiring as well. Throughout the book Mr. Terry never sways from his stance that the quality of your work should always be the focus of your efforts if you want to be a success.
This is a great introduction book for those interested in art as a career (primarily illustrator/animator). This book will definitely point you in the right direction, but PLEASE do lots of your own research as well. This book is not the end all be all, it is a very good jumpstart, but you need to be willing to do a lot of your own research now, and throughout your own career.
I read this with my two teenagers that want to be professional artists. It led to a lot of good discussions and helped them have a better understanding of what it takes to make a living as an artist.
I am so inspired! Thank you! I will be reading this again, practicing my art, finding my style, and hopefully applying the advice in this book toward my future art career goals.
This is a great book for anyone looking to make a career in illustration. It’s been 18 years since I graduated with a degree in illustration, luckily I learned a lot of this stuff when I was in school. It was a nice refresher though.
Great book. Would really have helped me in my twenties when I was doing loads of comic book art. Still valuable ideas I can apply to my second creative career as a writer.
