Different Hearts #5

Teaching Foster's Cowboy

Rate this book
One drink. Three times a week. For thirty minutes and no more.

Foster knows he should stay away from him. As the owner of the largest BDSM club in the state, he accepts the big, sweet bartender next door isn’t for him. It doesn’t matter if Elias’s blushes set his body on fire. It doesn’t matter if he sees the same burning need he feels reflected in Elias’s gaze because Elias isn’t submissive and dominance runs through the very core of Foster’s being.

Those are the rules.

Submissive and inexperienced, Elias is fascinated by the worldly, sophisticated man who comes into his bar. He’s everything Elias has ever wanted in a man: a compact body, an intense stare, and dominance that clings to his skin. It’s a shame he never makes a move.

But rules are meant to be broken.

And then something unexpected happens. When a coworker comes in and drags his stranger out of the bar, Elias can’t help but follow. As Elias lets his curiosity overtake him, he finds himself Foster’s partner, and suddenly, the man who never makes a move is making them all.

WARNING: This book is intended for Adult (18+) readers. I try to write all books so that they can be read and understood as stand-alone stories. However, reading them all together will create a more complete and rich experience as past characters can and will make surprise appearances.

I've had my sights in this series for a while but I don't really like littles so I haven't gone for it, this one was a dominant/submissive relationship so I picked it up. 🙆🏻‍♀️❤

For some reason I couldn't quite concentrate while reading it, the beginning WAS promising but then it just went vanilla I guess? I mean, Foster was described as a sadist so hard-core that some submissives didn't like to choose him as a Dom and then he starts playing with Elias and it was normal, I don't know if it was because those scenes were poorly described or because... Hell I dunno! What I do know is that it was plain like it didn't had depth or flavor or something interesting or different.

Dunno, expected more. The good thing is that is short and I liked the characters when they started, I just didn't like how they ended. 🤷🏻‍♀️❤

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

“Did you know dopamine is also connected to the reward centers of the brain? It’s why praise is such a big turn on for submissives, but I’m sure you’re well aware of that. Tell me, Elias, do you like it when I call you my good boy?”

I really adore this author’s books. I only wish they were all longer. These books are filled with kinks but not that high heat. There’s a lot of intimacy and relationship development, where the kink and sex complement it, where it adds to their story and makes sense for the dynamic. I always appreciate a good story that isn’t ‘sex first, everything else later’. I’ve been wanting to read this specific book in the series for a long time, but Sadism/masochism made me a little nervous for a while, just because I hadn’t really read it before. Turns out I enjoy reading it, especially if Izaia writes it.

“Hmmm?” I mumbled against his shoulder as I pulled him into my arms to cuddle. He might be my Dom, but I claimed the right to be the big spoon.

The dynamic in this book is so good. The Dom of all Doms, owner of his own BDSM club, 37 years old, looks younger, body of a twink, pining so hard for the 30 year old beefy farmboy bartender next door who thinks he might be submissive, but is completely new to kink. Has been pining for the pretty, dominant twink coming in for drinks. Their chemistry was so good and I was sad their book wasn’t much longer.

There were lots of great discussions about kink in general in this, and Izaia is so talented when it comes to writing about different kinks you might never consider being into, something you might not understand at all, and make it so human, so easy to understand.

I’d recommend this entire series to almost anyone.

“But I will grant you this, while I may hurt you, I’ll never harm you.”

“For those of you who might not know my name, I’m Foster Hayes. I am one of The Church's owners, whip master extraordinaire, extremely humble, and I will be your teacher for today. Those of you who do know my name, please don’t believe anything you’ve heard about me. It’s all lies.”

“I watch over the submissives at the club because there are always people out there who want to take advantage of them. We take care of our own because no one else is going to take care of us. I watch out for the Doms, too, because no one ever thinks they need it, but they do. They can be hurt just like anyone else.”

There was that word again: mine. I wanted to shout it from the rooftop, buy billboards around town. Let everyone know. Instead, I placed a kiss on the delicate skin below Elias’s ear and whispered it to the one person who mattered, “Mine.”

This was my second book by this author. I was disappointed with the first book because I was looking for something different from service submission. However, I really enjoyed this book. Foster is an incredible Dom and a great example that your sub can be bigger physically and still beautifully submit.

I loved this book as well. Foster is for sure one of my favorite characters and I really liked Elias a lot too.
Their relationship was great, so full of trust and love.
I also loved that Elias was open to everything Foster wanted to try out, since Elias was totally new to the BDSM scene. Regarding that I also LOVED the talk about limits and how important they are.
Very very much loved it and recommend if you are interested in books including BDSM.

I loved this book! It hooked me so hard I couldn’t put it down until the very last page.

4.5 rounded down because of the missing, long-awaited intensity.

The author’s writing just pulled me in — the flow, the humor, the vibe, all of it. The side characters were a delight, the banter made me grin, and yes… I giggled and ran off to squeeze my cat more times than I can count.

That was the overall vibe — loved it. The characters, the development, the conversations; all of it was perfect. BUT if I have to nitpick, it’s the scenes. Foster was hyped up across the whole series as the scariest sadist to ever walk this earth, so I was waiting for his scenes to really hit. Instead, they felt rushed — the last one didn’t even last a page! Kinda regretful, because with all that build-up, I wanted more detail more intensity.

Something very strange happened to me with this book. I loved the couple, and the smut scenes are some of the best in the series, but it is the story that I liked the least. I felt like a lot of loose ends were left unresolved. For example, the conversations about their feelings and their future did not appear in the book and were kind of over implied.

Too cute

I'm going to keep this short because I have fangirled over Izaia Winter enough. If you are looking for a solid, heartfelt, smutty as all heck, kinky book that depicts a healthy relationship between a sadist and a newbie masochist, this is it.

The characters are great, the relationships (both romantic and platonic) are strong, and these books are just great. 5 stars because I can't think of a single thing to complain about.

I knew when I started this book that I would probably like it, but wouldn’t love it. And I was right.

This is mostly because I’m not a fan of BDSM these days. And of course Foster was all about the BDSM, and I knew that.

I still liked the sweetness of this. I’ve become quite the fan of Izaia Winter’s writing.

And I did like Foster and Elias, I just skipped all the BDSM scenes.

This one is probably my favorite of the series. Maybe because it's just a regular dom/sub relationship without all the added kinks. I'm not sure. I don't mind age play, but every book in the series is a bit much. It needs to have a little variety maybe.

I actually thought this was going to be a bit rougher. Based on how Foster views his preferences, I expected things to be a bit different. Honestly, other than him giving a spanking with a whip or flogger or whatever it was, it was actually pretty vanilla considering.

Elias and Foster make a good couple, so that helped.

This was a focus on more hardcore BDSM than I'm usually partial too. But basically Elias is a student/bartender who has been crushing on Foster who comes into his bar several times a week for a year but they barely speak. One night he follows Foster when he's called back to work and discovered what kind of club he works at.

He takes a chance and decides to go for an exhibit and surprise, Foster is the teacher (and owner). He's shocked to see Elias because he's been avoiding the guy for a year figuring he's sweet and vanilla and Foster is hardcore sadist, master of the whip. He gets Elias to volunteer for the demo (which is pretty minor) but they finally decide to give it a go. Foster has a rep as a love/beat 'em and leave 'em kind of guy but he's hooked on Elias.

Elias goes from not being sure what he's into to a paddling and caning his first kink session and sounding and estim his second. Wow, 0 to 60.

Elias lives with his younger sister (he's a vet tech student but older) and they are "best friends" but I get really tired of the feisty lesbian who has to confront the potential boyfriend about his intentions. It really shows that they think the man is a weakling who can't figure out a good relationship. If he had a reputation of being in abusive relationships but he didn't. Just because he's not outgoing and in-your-face doesn't mean he needs some spunky chick to look out for him and squeal when he mentions he talked to a guy he liked. Jesus, he's not 12 and waiting for a note from his crush in math class.

Maybe it's my repressed family or growing up an only but ... no. Let him figure out his own life and stop being all up in his business. So the BDSM scenes were very explanation heavy because Elias is a newbie and as I said, whips are not my thing and it freaks me out, but it was fine.

It was interesting that when I read book 1 in this series in March 2020 I was "Littles aren't my thing", now I love me a little book. LOL Amazing how your tastes evolve over time.

Why this was a 4-star read instead of a 5-star read... Yes, I saw the errors and they were a bit of a bother, but NO that wasn't why. It actually came down to my preferences. I am a huge fan of the "little" guys and since this story was not about that, it may well be the only thing that didn't work for me. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciated the chance to learn more about Foster and to see him get his HEA! I enjoyed watching Foster and Elias dance around each other. Both thought the other couldn't possibly be what they needed... but the attraction was strong. Both of them had some self-reflecting to work through to get where they needed to be. I think the thing I found fascinating was the fact that Foster was of a smaller stature than Elias, but he still was the dominant partner.

I may be wrong (as I am not in the lifestyle), but I have come to realize that being dominant or submissive is a mind thing and not what others perceive what we should be. Honestly, I have never given a flying flip what others thought of me, so long as my partner and I are on the same page it is all good! And let me just say that having been together for almost 45 years makes me think that we might be doing something right! *grin*

Now, I am going to jump right into Playing With Spencer... back to the "littles" we go!

Sweet

Another sweet low angst story. I really liked these characters. Although I really wasn't a fan of Foster introducing a newbie to kink by not telling him anything he is going to do. There were enough misspelled or incorrect words to bother me but not necessarily ruin the book. It just really needed a final proofread. After the family story about Elias dropping the pliers in the water and then the bracelet needing pliers to remove, I was sure it was leading to a scene with Elias dropping the pliers into water as a way of saying he would never need out of the bracelet. Despite those things bothering me, I still really enjoyed the story

Never a bad book

I love all of the Different Hearts books. Foster and Carson have always held a special place in my heart. I was so happy to see that we were finally getting his HEA. Elias was every thing I wanted for him.

These two were falling for one another long before they ever knew it. Watching the evolution of them was wonderful. Seeing Foster finally let someone in gave me all the feels. This books was sexy and sweet. Gentle and rough. I cannot wait for the next book.

I’d also love to see Turner get a story. Though I will always have a special place in my heart for Mr. Chamberlain and Q.

So I was super excited to read this story since I really like Flower boy doms. The gap between both of their appearances and personalities was so cute.☺️

Foster as the flower boy Dom and Elias as the built hunky sub. It was soooooo moooeeee!!!

And omg, they were both such sweethearts. From my introduction to Foster in the first book, I knew he had a dangerous air to him but it was so interesting to see inside his head. He had a reputation for only playing which he developed because he feared letting anyone in. His fears as a youth and his very misinformed therapists convinced him that no one could ever love him.

I loved that he could admit that the men he dated/ played with before had all been wonderful men. That the issue of why he couldn’t find anyone had been because he pushed everyone away. And now he was paying the price since he couldn’t build a serious relationship with any sub in the club.

His attraction to Elias started because he wasn’t part of the club and slowly developed as he observed how sweet he was. I mean, of course he would because Elias is a baby beaw, so precious.

Elias is truly beautiful, inside and out. He apologizes for his mistakes (when he was mean to Miller because he was jealous) and is kind to everyone. He isn’t a doormat but just a person who doesn’t wish to harm anyone. His sister Billie was also pretty cool, loved how supportive and protective she was.

As Elias’ mama said, he has a tender heart. And so does Foster, two tender hearts with kinky tendencies makes for a sexy and cute story.

My only complaint would be that they had sex unprotected without discussing their STD history. Maybe I missed that convo somehow 🤷‍♀️... I doubt it though. But the book did have moments were they spoke off stage about something important that was sort of quickly brought up so maybe it was then 🧐

DNF. The search for a good BDSM book without Daddy Doms and "good boys" (woof, woof) continues. I usually avoid this author as I abhor the DD/lb kink, but decided to give this a try and I'm disappointed. Foster was supposed to be some hard-core experienced sadist and ... well, he's just the generic "do what I say" Dom, at least at the beginning. It's S/M 101 all over again, formulaic and unsexy. Didn't feel it, to say the least. Ughh, it's me.

Good

I really love this author. Very excited to see a new book in the series out. While I enjoyed this book it left me wanting. I got my fill in all the other books but this one I wanted more. More Dom, more submissive, more scenes. It just didn't feel believable to me, that connection I usually feel to the characters just wasn't there. Looking forward to the next book though.

❝I watched him sleep and imagined rainy days in bed, mornings with both of us trying to rush out the door, and lazy afternoons on the couch. It was something I’d never done before—sharing the boring stuff—but I wanted it fiercely. I wanted it with Elias.❞

please, i was obsessed with foster since the first book. i just checked my review from when i read caring for little ollie in 2021, and i was intrigued by his one second appearance. i used to be super nitpicky in reading a series in order, but now i don't give a shit anymore, so i finally decided to read his book. and it was so good.

i absolutely loved foster so much. he was one of the owners of the church (which we learned from the first book) and was described as having the "sleek body of a twink, but a personality of someone three times his size." like hello? that caught my attention immediately. i also liked the author's decision to go with a bigger submissive for him, because anyone else wouldn't have worked for me; foster and elias were perfect together.

along the same vein as other izaia winter books, this one was really sweet. i kind of wanted more hardcore bdsm because of foster's character being known as this intense dom/sadist, but sadly it was pretty softcore. oh well, i still enjoyed this story a lot.

Foster and his cowboy were just perfect together.

I love Izaia Winter’s books. This one was no exception. I have been (not so) patiently waiting for Foster’s book since we first met him and this did not disappoint. I love that he was still that cocky, self-assured, wicked, slightly wild, loveable and cuddly guy we first met whilst being able to show Elias his willingness to be open and vulnerable. I loved that Elias was so open to new things and so willing to trust in Foster and himself. Foster deserved someone who was willing to accept both himself and Foster simply as they were. What was best (and one of my favourite things about Winter’s books) was that we got a beautiful story with plenty of progression without needing to torture the characters. No big misunderstanding, no manufactured argument, no endless and tortured discussion of whether they might love each other. Just a sweet story about two people finding their way to each other and learning how to be happy with each and themselves.

I can’t wait for Spencer!

Foster is part owner of a BDSM club but can't stay away from the bartender next door, so he limits himself to one drink, three times a week for just 30 minutes. He just loves watching Elias blushing and the same need for Foster reflected in his gaze. Elias is an inexperienced submissive and is fascinated by the man who comes into his bar. Then a coworker comes into the bar and drags Foster away and Elias decides to follow. As Elias lets his curiosity overtake him, he finds himself Foster’s partner, and suddenly, the man who never makes a move is making them all.

I enjoyed this story although I did find the description of Foster as a sadist to be a bit false as he was certainly dominant but not sadistic. Elias was a little masochistic but not very so it was all a bit tame. I did like the concept of the barman finding out about the club next door and the introduction to everything. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content and is a BDSM-like D/s story with praise kink, bondage, E-Stim, sounding, and exhibitionism.

- all of the scenes they do are so HOT and fun to read i love it
- hehehe Elias getting jelly of Miller was so funny
- dunno if i’m a fan of the sister you know
- again all of the scenes are so good!!
- love that we had a ‘yellow’ safe word scene! it’s so important to show the communication in these types of relationships
- Foster being scared he’s going to screw it up was weirdly wholesome?? he was always so confident being the dom it was good to see!
- amazing love confessions!! especially with the collar scene
- and great epilogue!!
- ahhhh loved this one so much!! they were so much fun together

The Sadist and the Cowboy

I think what I love best about these books is that the author manages to weave a wonderful story while educating the reader on different aspects of BDSM. The characters are relatable - real - and human. They have flaws and vulnerabilities that aren't overshadowed by the kink. I really loved reading about our resident sadist, Foster. For all his sadistic desires and casual approach to play partners, he actually has a streak of vulnerability, a wish to be accepted for who he is. Elias sees Foster - really sees him - and it doesn't scare him. While he may be a newbie to the BDSM scene, Elias knows intuitively that he's a submissive. Trusting in Foster to show him the way, it's really sweet too see their relationship bloom. I'm a huge fan of this series and hope that the author continues to show us more of the kink world through The Church - where we pray to the demons to sate our need!

Foster and Elias have been crushing on each other from a distance, only exchanging few words when Foster visits the bar Elias works. But when Elias follows Foster out one night and sees him going to the club next door - The Church - his curiosity gets the better of him and he heads to find out it is a BD SM club.

When Foster sees him there, all the holding back he has been doing flys out the window. He discovers Elias’ submissive and maso side and begins to teach him all the things Elias had barely been able to dream of.

Super cute book, quick and easy read, fun spice a k|nks, a bit of instalove and it all made for a good time! Possibly a little light on the maso side of things given how hardcore Foster is described, but I still enjoyed it!
